If I could leave minus stars then I would. I took my cat to Tynemouth Vets and was told she would have to be put to sleep - took over 15 minutes to put catheter in (I was not allowed to be present) when I went into the examination room she was on the table - lifting her head and trying to get off - I asked - why it had taken so long for the catheter to go and they said she had "old lady legs" She probably did as she was 20 My cat had not been sedated first and was so frightened - I could see the fear in her eyes - My partner had to hold her head - I held her shaking body and the nurse her leg - took the vet several attempts to put the needle in the catheter. I complained only to be told that my cat was not stressed when the catheter was inserted and the reason it had taken so long was because of her veins - I knew my cat and I no how she behaved around strangers and a different environment this would have caused her to panic and there had possibly been a blood clot when trying to insert the needle into the catheter No explanation has been given as to why it took 3 adults to restrain my cat from trying to get off the examination table - she did not deserve the end of her life the way she did and the way she looked at me with her big blue eyes saying why is this happening will remain with me forever. Before anything else people need to be aware that vet nurses are not allowed to diagnose in clinic never mind over the phone. I contacted this place with immediate concerns over one of my cat's. To be informed by the vet nurse it was probably an abscess. I was not offered an appointment for 5 days, no referral to a vet. After reminding this nurse that he goes and and could have been hit by a car. It was then announced that it was an abscess and abscesses are not an emergency. Only once I said I would take him to my other vet's, did she bother to look at any further afield surgeries for an appointment for him. I was already disgusted by her attitude that I should leave my pet in pain and distress for 5 day's and contacted my other vet's, who I had previously moved all my rabbits to after multiple incidents of poor veterinary practice regarding this species. Registered my cat listed the exact same symptoms and low and behold he needed to be seen the same day. It took them a period of time to find a surgery that could squeeze him in as they where also fully booked. But he was squished in that day at one of their further afield surgeries. Low and behold he didn't have an abscess. Now all my pets are with a reliable provider instead of a ball pool of luck if you actually get a fully qualified and experienced member of staff. If left to the joke of a practice my cat would of been left to suffer in pain and distress for 5 days. Lodged a formal complaint which was replied with by their typical let's brush it under the carpet response. Avoid at all costs, an emergency hospital that X rays rabbits without even checking their teeth orally, and STILL manage to miss the dental issues on an X ray. Just one of their other complete cock ups by their "qualified staff" Read Less

I have been a customer of Westway Vets (West Road) for 10+ years and until recently, would have highly recommended them. However, I have a rabbit with regular health issues who requires emergency care on a 6 weekly basis. My insurers refused to pay out for a claim, and following an ongoing dispute, I have chosen to pay in full for all subsequent treatments. I telephoned the emergency line to discuss my rabbit's deteriorating health and to ask advice, etc., and organise to bring her in as an urgent case the following morning, which has never been an issue in the past. I was transferred to a middle aged lady who, from the off, was aggressive and rude in her tone. She demanded to know about the ongoing dispute with Petplan and said she wouldn't make me an appointment until it was sorted. I explained that I was now paying for treatment and had paid in full for all previous treatments. She said she wasn't interested, and wasn't there to discuss insurance issues. I explained I wasn't asking her to, I only wanted to make an appointment I was paying for, when she cut me off with, "don't be so rude or I'll put the phone down". I was literally astounded - she was on loudspeaker in my car and my husband and I looked at each other incredulously. I protested that I wasn't being rude at all, I just wanted to organise urgent treatment for my pet, when she abruptly ended the call. I rang back and spoke to Charlotte Hawkesbury, who told me she was "too busy" to give me the name of the lady I had spoken to and then also ended the call. The staff I have previously dealt with in the West Road practice have been sympathetic, understanding, patient and polite. The emergency staff this evening were none of those things and their treatment of a loyal customer was nothing short of disgusting. I won't be returning to Westway's as I wouldn't want the displeasure of having to deal with such unpleasant, aggressive, and rude, emergency staff again. If I could rate my recent experience zero stars I would. Read Less

Cant fault my experience with Westway at the West Road. We were seen on Bank Holiday by lovely Philip (?) and he booked my cat in for an op the following day. Pre op. nurses and procedures were seamless, professional and were very sympathetic (me fretting mainly!) and constructive and assuring and Caroline the vet was amazing throughout the op ringing me 3 times to updates me on bloods/what they found and what they would like to do with my permission. She then rang when he came round and told me everything that had been done. All re-assuring thankfully. The surgery is spotless and they even have a separate cat area. State of the art equipment too. MY cat was amazingly good after the op..no wobbling and wanted to eat straight away. Cant thank you all enough and for putting up with my fussing all the time!! Well done! Highly recommended. Horrible. / I found an injured crow, so I called Westway Veterinary group yesterday. They said I and my friend should bring our injured bird to the hospital then decide. And so we did. When we came into the hospital, we explained we got an injured bird and had spoken with the RSPCA. They understood the situation, took the bird into the room and ONLY said they would let a nurse check it first. After a few seconds, the vet came out and said its legs were completely broken and nothing could be done. They have already made it sleep FOREVER. / No one told us if they thought its legs was not curable (its wings were healthy), they would judge by themselves. No explanation in advance and no one explained to us why they did so, just let us leave. I don't understand the rule of wildlife welfare said by a vet: As a bird, it cannot fly, so it should die. / You know, everyone who goes to the hospital is to seek for help, not a sudden shock. My dog needs medication for life. You have to go to the vets every 3 months for a medication check up £30 and if you get the medication from the vets it has a 300% mark up compared to on line pharmacies. They used to charge £14 for a prescription now it is £15 per item , I was told “we can’t compete with on line pharmacies “ so they are charging extra to make up their short fall so much for care and compassion, greedy people Read Less
