Over 20 years I have used various vets and have to say Great Western Exotics provide the most amazing 24/7 service for Exotics. Particularly for Rabbits. Even through this Pandemic Tom and the staff have continued to provide their expert services, most expert skills. It is quite amazing what is available in terms of care, knowledge and surgery capabilities with CT scanners, blood tests, specialist surgeons 24 hours a day etc. No level of care of this quality at a Veterinary Hospital will be cheap - so animal insurance is a must for any exotics owner who values their animal's welfare and health for the more complex cases. Keep up the good work. Highly recommend you and I know people travel across the South West of England to you. Read Less

Excellent. Simply the best avian vets in the UK. Neil Forbes, the previous owner, is one of the most highly qualified and experienced avian vets in the world and has now handed over the baton to Tom Dutton who is professional, extremely knowledgeable, kind and caring and leads a wonderful team of avian specialists (Fiona, Tariq and Dan are all excellent). You will not get better treatment for your bird: all species are given the same high standard of care. We happily make a 5-hour round trip to see this team. Very few vets in the UK can match the specialist knowledge, experience and qualifications on offer here. The service really is different and can make a real difference to the outcome. I have taken a number of birds here that I am sure would have died or suffered poor outcomes had I gone elsewhere. I can't thank them enough. Read Less

This is a very difficult review for me to write. Our day on a personal level was horrible, as our APH had to be PTS. However the staff as a whole were excellent with us, kind and compassionate in trying to help us deal with what was happening. Knowledgeable about our pet and very articulate in explaining what was happening and reassuring us about what was happening. I cannot express enough how good they are as vets and as people. They treated Penny with a great deal of dignity and respect from the moment we arrived to the moment she left us and we took her home. Read Less

My rabbit was seen very soon after having been referred and GWE has a CT scanner. Mr Forbes seemed like a nice guy and a very knowledgeable, highly competent, driven and efficient vet. I was kept well informed and e-mails were responded to promptly. However, when I collected my rabbit, whilst I was informed that she could not close her eyelids fully, I was not told that her bilateral facial paralysis would prevent her from eating her caecotrophs and that she would have to learn to eat without using her lips, hence the 3 star review. The vet who discharged her informed me, after I had asked, that my local vet would be able to provide the required post operative care. That was poor judgement on his behalf; my local vet had just graduated from the RVC and had neither the interest nor the competency to provide the rabbit's post op. checks. In Mr Forbes' absence, the vets were unwilling to deal with me, but only with the referring vet, who was not interested: my rabbit continued to lose weight and even when her temperature was 37.4 and GWE staff had warned the referring vet about the possibility of GI Stasis, she did nothing. My rabbit ended up spending days in hospital with GI Stasis, thought to have resulted from the rabbit having been struggling to eat an adequate amount due to having to learn how to eat without the use of her lips. When I asked GWE staff why I was not informed of this when she was discharged, I was not provided with an answer. To be fair, GWE staff are not responsible for the incompetent and careless referring vet and when he found out about what had happened, Mr Forbes e-mailed the more local specialist who had taken over the rabbit's care. Vets Now admin staff were very inefficient; I was informed that my insurance company had not paid and that I owed the full amount, but it turned out that the problem was not with the insurance company, but that they had not received the claim form from Vets Now. Trust your instincts and make sure that you have a sufficiently competent vet who is willing to contact GWE vets if necessary, to provide aftercare, before you arrange for GWE to treat your pet.
