Waited for an hour to see vet even though I had an appointment. Ran tests and X-rays that were not needed and still could not find out what was wrong with my cat after my suggestion that he had a urinary Tracy infection. My bill was over $400 and I had to come back twice to try and pick up my cat. Waited over an hour the first try but could not take a longer lunch. All this doctor cares about is taking advantage of pet owners and then forcing them into unneeded procedures. Please don’t ever bring your pet here. So pleased when I took my cat here, not only did they let me know how much it was going to cost before I agreed to anything,they are also nice,caring and friendly. While my cat was there with kidney failure,Dr.Z called me everyday to let me know how my cat was doing and when my cat passed away,the staff including Dr.Z gave me a hug and told me they were really sorry and I also got a card and it was signed by everyone that worked there. Dr. Z and staff are knowledgeable, courteous and professional. I am impressed with the diagnostic abilities they have in the clinic to include: ultrasound, digital radiography, hematology analyzer and a chemistry analyzer. There might be more but that is what my clan of Great Danes have utilized. We recently bred one of our female Great Danes, Dr. Z gave us her cell phone number in case of emergency during the whelping process. I highly recommend her services. I was very skeptical when taking my cat here for a check up. All I wanted was a rabies shot and a UTI check. They attempted to give my cat all sorts of other vaccines that were unnecessary. I assume to make more money. I will not be coming here again. I plan to try out North Shelby Animal Clinic. Read Less

Have gone to Shelby Animal Clinic since 2004 and have been very pleased. Dr Z is currently treating one of our dogs (12 years old) for bladder cancer, has done research on what is the best treatment for this type cancer, been very professional as well as has genuine care for how our dog is doing and how we as her family are doing. Feel very well informed on what to expect and what to look for symptom-wise that can show the progression of the tumor growth. Very grateful for the care she and her staff have shown us during this very difficult time, and grateful for how happy and healthy our dog remains during the process. Read Less

Doctor Z has been taking care of my dog for over a year now for various ailments and injuries, vaccines and boarding over various days while on vacation. A little pricey, but I have no other complaints. The front desk staff are inviting and friendly. I don't get the low star reviews here, I guess you just can't please everyone. Read Less

I am a long time client of Shelby Animal Clinic and Dr. Z. She has cared for 4 cats and 2 dogs of mine over the years. My animals have grown from kittens to cats and puppies to seniors while in her care. All through their lives, they have received loving care and treatment by Dr. Z and the staff in her office. Routine care, illness treatment, and emergency situations have all been handled professionally. Dr. Z's medical knowledge and her compassion have contributed to long, happy lives for my pets. As to the wait for such fine care, I wait much long for my own doctors. We have become a nation of ""drive thru service"" people who demand instant service on everything. Slow down and enjoy life! Shelby Animal Clinic under the ownership and direction of Dr. Marsha Zahumensky has been a life saver in my life. Dr. Z takes whatever time is required to explain what procedures are needed and answer whatever questions that I have. She has cared for all of my dogs for the past twenty (20) + years and I can not say enough good things about the services provided by her clinic. She is a caring individual and will be with you when the ""end"" has obviously come for a loved pet gently lending her shoulder for you to cry on. all i have to say is this is not a very nice or pleasant place for your dog or cats to get care from! Its nasty and not sanitary at all! The people that work there mostly high school kids no clue that they are doing in the back and give meds and are not trained to do so. She lashes out on her workers for no reason ..they little mistakes they make she beats them done to nothing but a big mistake they just get a little small talk! you would think it would be the other way around right? Shelby animal clinc is the best vet i have ever been to. Yes some times the wait was long because one of the staff memebers explained if you make an appiontment you will get to go first walk ins may have to wait a mintues but they do try to get to you as fast as the can remeber first come first serve. To all of those who are saying the the vet is horrible: I've worked there as receptionist AND vet tech. The reason you have to wait ""so long"" is because THERE ARE OTHER CLIENTS BEFORE YOU!! We take care of appointments FIRST...walk-ins come AFTER appointments and are first come first serve. People drive from DIFFERENT STATES to use Dr. Zahumensky!! If a client has a ""budget,"" we are MORE than happy to give estimates...this does NOT mean you have to accept everything on the estimate. You can pick and choose what you think is necessary. I have never witnessed the doctor ""pushing"" products on a client. She may OFFER a product, but that certainly does not mean you have to buy it. From what I have seen, especially with our most loyal clients, they love Dr. Z and have told me personally that there's no way they could ever think of using another vet. They are pleased with the service provided by the doctor and employees. As far as being employed by her, I can only speak for myself. She has helped me in so many ways....she's gone as far as buying math tutor books for me so I could study before I started school. She's always been there to listen to what was going on in my life and whatever problem I may have. Yes, there have been times where she's been angry with me and possibly said some things she really didn't mean, but hey, we are all human and make mistakes...that's how I see it. I do believe the stress level could come down a notch or two, but overall it's really not that bad at all. I have DEFINATELY grown A LOT since I first started working there. Dr. Z treats her employees like the poop she stepped in. Many times I came into work to find various employees crying because of the tongue lashings they received because of her personal insecurities regarding her marriage or herself. She is convinced her employees are having affairs with her partner. She talks down to her employees as if they are all retarded. She can't even keep other veterinarians in her practice with her. Our dog was ran over by a car. We took her to Shelby Animal Clinic, as they were the closest available clinic open at 5 p.m. My husband was chastised by Marsha Zahumensky, (vet),for not bringing our dog to her clinic for the past 4-5 years, even making the comment that it was ""obvious she's been somewhere, she has her rabies tag."" After 2 x-rays, it was determined that Stella's spinal cord was severed and she must be put down. BEFORE this; however, my husband had to endure yet more judgment/critisism from Marsha because he did not have $199.16 cash on him. It was wrong of this woman to judge my husband's character without knowing anything about us. My husband is an honest and decent man with a wonderful reputation and for her to accuse him of ""skipping out"" on the bill was just the last straw. Although my husband did not have cash with him, the bill was paid this morning and out in today's mail. Had it not been so late last evening, he would have driven the 27 miles to the clinic and given it to her then. Such a tragic and painful time for us was made even worse by the horrendous treament provided by this cold and uncaring individual. True enough, we did take Stella there approximately 4-5 years ago when we rescued her off the streets. We did not return to that clinic after the initial visit because we felt that Marsha, (specifically), had a cold and nonchalant demeanor, more concerned with selling products/dog food than the actual care of the animal. (I have seen this on other complaint sites as well about this clinic). The ONLY reason he took her there last night was becasue THEY WERE THE CLOSEST AVAILABLE VET OPEN AT THAT TIME and in a race to save Stella's life, we did what we thought was best for her. My husband left that clinic with our Stella, brought her home, and buried her by truck headlights on our property late in the evening. This is not the place you want to be when your pet is ill and/or dying. You will find no comfort there. Read Less

I was not very satisfied with either the service or pet care at this vet's office. I took two cats in with one needing shots and the other having an ailment that needed drastic care. I was told I could come by and pick them both up. The day I showed up I waited an hour and a half to find out that the sick one needed surgery. I then left her there for the rest of that week and went back to wait another hour and a half to get two minutues with the vet in which she tried to load me up with all the pet food and medicine she could sell me. This vet is all about prescribing anything she can (she even has a video constantly playing that shows what medications you can get for your pets). There is no ""quick pick up"" for a pet. Be ready to spend the good part of an afternoon here if you take your pet to this clinic. Read Less
