TOP NOTCH! warming, welcoming and very professional. I brought my ill dog to this facility without notice; my dog was being treated (IV's etc) at a nearby vet for serious stomach issue. That vet requested my dog stay overnight. However, after this vet closed at 8:00 pm - no one would be in the building to check on my dog (and others) until they opened the next morning. I picked up my dog from the vet at closing and brought her here to be observed overnight. They treated her with love, played with her through out the night, took her outside several times. They even washed, dried and folded her favorite blanket that she urinated on during the night. I could have not been more pleased with the "family" type care she received during the night. Thank you THANK YOU for being so great! Read Less

I will try and make this brief. A couple months ago,on a Sunday morning,I was unpacking camping gear. Because I live in a rural area,I let my Chihuahua out in the yard with me. I heard her "cry out" and noticed what could possibly be a snake bite on her side. She also began vomitting. I knew my vet wasn't opened on Sunday,so I immediately took her in to this emergency vet off Morgan Rd. The dr. didn't think it was a snake bite and said her vitals were fine. He sent her home with an antibiotic. The diagnosis was a "possible scratch from a fence/cat..." I still wasn't sure what had happened to my fur baby. However, being her "mom," I knew something was still wrong! She was still very larthargic the rest of the evening and was still vomitting. Monday morning I took her to my regular vet, Galleria Animal Hospital Off Hwy 150 (they are great!!!). The immediately did more extensive test and determined that Izzi had been shot by a pellet gun. This had pierced her pancreas and had made her extremely ill. I ended up losing her within two days. We lost a good 24 hours of care bc of the "care" at this ER vet! I even went back after her death to see if I could simply get a refund on the UNOPENED box of meds (not the visit). They wouldn't refund. I not only lost my baby, I gave them about $300 for nothing. Please be aware of this place!!! They were NOT precise at all! Read Less

If there are regular vets open please go to them instead of this place. Pet emergencys are never a good thing, neither is charging someone 50 dollars for a physical exam on their pet. I'm very thankful that this place had an oxygen tank and at the time its what saved my dogs life. The veterinarian on call did an x ray and my dog only had about the size of 2 quarters of breathing room in his lungs. First off, he had no empathy what so ever and was possibly the most cold talking person I have ever come in contact with. He told us our dog had something eating up his lungs, and that if he did survive, he was going to need oxygen therapy for weeks and told us we should send my dog to an internal medicene school and that we might not get him back (because they would do experiments on my dog) and he said the cost was close to 3 grand and if we couldn't pay it we should put our dog down. He came in with an estimate of 880 dollars for random stuff that didn't even make sense and when we told the vet we were going to pay for the x ray, bloodwork, oxygen for the night, and the proper medicene for our pet at the time, he got a nasty attitude and said that he "didn't recommend we do that because he needs more care" which was the vet trying to make some money for himself which is awful. Not only that, we asked him if he had the liquid version of the meds because it would be easier for our pet to take, he said no that they did not carry it. Well, the next morning when we thankfully picked our pet up and we carried him to another vet (mcadory veterinary associates) we later found out that he had pneumonia & a small heart murmur and 90% of the problem was fluid on his lungs. Also the vet at A.V.S. didn't even do the bloodwork we payed for, a long with that on the form he wrote that we declined liquid meds for our dog which was a lie. I think the vets name is dr.mckinnon (not sure if thats how you spell it) I say stay away from that vet because he not only lied about what we wanted him to do. He didn't do what he was supposed to do and long story short this guy has something serious wrong with him and he has freakish ways and I'm thankful he didn't try to hurt my dog. The way he talked and how he lied about the liquid meds its like he wanted to shove pills down my dogs throat and try to kill him (my dog had a hard time breathing). He was cold hearted and if this vet is the one on call please take your dog to another emergency vet if regular vets are not open. Also there is a director/vet i do not know his name but he also has no clue what he is doing. We called bc our dog was breathing weird but not heavy and our vet was closed. He told us it didn't matter what the color or his gums or tounge was (the color tells if the oxygen flow is good or not good and thankfully his was,but we were trying to figure out what was going on exactly and we knew another vet would be on call and not the same one) he said our dogs lungs were filling up with fluid and that he needed to see him but if we didn't have the money don't bother (also had a very nasty attitude). One of the nurses (i believe her name is katty) she told us that they didn't even charge us for medicine (our bill was 308 lol) and i asked about the bloodwork and she changed the subject and kept saying they didnt charge us for meds when we have the recipt that shows they clearly did (she also had a very sketchy attitude also). To sum it all up i would never bring my pet here again, to everyone else reading this i would avoid this place. As the vets are clearly uneducated, untrustworthy, overcharging people for services, and they lack empathy. I would not want to see this happen to someone else or worse so personally i would say carry your pet somewhere else. Read Less

Before I start this review, I would like to say that I was in a very unfortunate situation when I came to A.V.S. No amount of money would be able to stop the inevitable. In this context, I was provided with the emergency care that my pet desperately needed which was ultimately putting her down. So why the low rating then? We arrived at the vet already knowing that she would probably need to be put down. Instead of promptly ending her suffering, she was allowed her to linger in pain as her legs slowly died. I asked several times why there wasn't anything more being done to alleviate the issue but the vet seemed busy with the other patient. Which I totally understand, but it took seconds for the shot to be given and for her to pass. Meanwhile, we had to wait and listen as she cried in pain and suffered with no comfort or care. To make it worse, the veterinarian took time to lecture us twice during the experience about her shots which, while en pointe, was certainly not an appropriate time to do so with us grieving and trying to say goodbye. The whole experience was very traumatic and infinitely more so because of how she was treated. A.V.S may be an amazing clinic and mine was just a rare lapse of service, but I would not personally recommend them or use their services again. They did send a sympathy card after the fact which was sweet but doesn't erase the burden that is left on our minds of her extended suffering.Read Less

Just wanted to say a BIG THANK YOU to the staff at Alabama Veterinary Specialists for taking care of my Lola. I was very scared when I first brought her in, she was bleeding from her rectum. They gave her immediate attention and treated her like she was one of their own. My husband and I don't have children, so the 2 dogs that we have are like our children. It was very comforting to know that we could leave her overnight in ICU and she would be taken care of. Dr. Buird and her team overnight were very caring and compassionate as were the daytime staff. The first 24 hours were very critical for Lola and they did everything they needed to do to save her life. I am eternally grateful for the entire staff and their knowledge.Read Less

After being referred here by my regular vet, the first time I brought one of my cats here, I'm not going to lie-I experienced a little bit of 'sticker shock' at the price of the office visit. Every visit thereafter, was a completely different story, however.  Consistent, though, was the friendliness/care/concern/empathy from all the staff that I interacted with. I had brought in one of my cats originally for (what was ultimately diagnosed as) secondary anterior uveitis.  His treatment did not cure him, but this is NOT something I blame on the AVS-let me be clear on this-my cat had other things going on; he was 15, and after ruling out infections etc. through bloodwork,  in all likelihood had some sort of cancer -the uveitis, as stated in the diagnosis, was secondary. The other things my cat had going on did not present themselves as obviously as the uveitis did.  Throughout all visits-Dr. Korsch was amazing during the whole process. She was very thorough, knowledgeable, compassionate, explained in detail what she determined to be going on, what each medication would help him with, the possible side-effects, everything.  Even when I had brought him in to check on the pressure of the affected eye (glaucoma is a very common side effect of the uveitis)-he had a seizure, and confirmed what I had already been thinking, which was it was time to let him go. She stated that typically, ophthalmologists don't usually take on the responsibility of putting an animal down-but under the circumstances (this was a Saturday, and my regular vet wouldn't be open until Monday), she felt it was in the best interest of my cat so that he didn't suffer any longer.  The office, and each examining room was always clean and sterile. The staff, friendly and compassionate. I can't speak about the other Dr.s, as I do not have any personal experience to go from, but Dr. Korsch was fantastic, and I know without doubt, that my cat got the best possible care for the last 6 weeks of his life.

It is never a good thing to have to take your little one to the emergency vet, I had to take my little one in and the staff was great. They took her right back to the vet while i filled out all the paperwork. Vet was very knowledgable and helpful. I arrived around 7PM, my little one was seen by 7:01, i was the only one in the building that time of night.I am fortunate to have such a good emergency vet right around the corner, i never with anyone to have to go here for obvious reason. But if your pet is ill, i would recommend these fine folks. Our pets are also our children too and deserve the best treatment they can get. Read Less

I got there too late last night for them to be able to save my cat. He passed away while I was rushing him to this facility. They were still so caring and professional, I will use them again.
