Took my dog in to have estimate for removing some growths on her neck and back. She also had some gum disease and needed some teeth removed. Estimate came to $2658.61! I was shocked and decided to find another vet with great reviews and get a second estimate. Second vet estimate came to $641.23, wow what a difference. Second vet performed procedure and my dog is doing great. Old Shell Animal Hospital was trying to price gouge by over $2,000.00 because of how important my pet was to me. How shameful. **Update: This is not a fake review. I am a level 3 local guide on Google, just look at my profile Doc. Look through my other reviews and you will see the vet that did the procedure at $2000 cheaper price tag. We absolutely love Dr Cross and all of her staff! They take wonderful care of our pups and show their kindness, caring and compassion during each visit. Very very nice people! We were passing through Mobile on our way to Florida. Our dog needed to be looked at by a vet because of bleeding. They took us right away with no hesitations. This is an email I sent them after an appointment last week. Obviously I was concerned about the way my dog was treated but they didn't have the courtesy to respond. Take it for what it's worth:Good EveningI know Cooper is a big dog and when he gets nervous he can seem pretty aggressive. I do apologize for that and I'm sure he's a lot to handle for a 5 o'clock appointment. However, the truth of it is he's a pretty big big scaredy cat and I think the techs could've done more to calm him down and develop a rapport with him. I do appreciate the techs willingness to give him a bath on such short notice but Cooper was already a little uneasy when the first tech rounded the corner to come get him and very quickly reached for him. From this point on we were in trouble. He wouldn't cooperate with her so I walked him down the hallway when the second vet came to take him. She made almost no effort to calm him down before shortening his leash by wrapping it around her hand and then literally tugging him down the hall while he had all four legs spread to stop himself. To make matters worse he was wearing a pinch collar and I'm sure he was in a certain amount of pain getting yanked around like that. At this point they assured me that they could take it from here so I went back to the lobby. It sounds like they tried for a couple of minutes to get him in the bath but when he was still uncooperative they gave up and decided they'd just weigh him, give him the shot and be done with it. However, by this point he was so freaked out he wouldn't even get on the scale so they had to come get me so I could get him on the scale for long enough to weigh him. He had a muzzle on at this point and it's true that I didn't have much success in calming him down either. We did get him on the scale long enough to weigh him but I stuck around to try and help with the rest of the process. One of the techs tried to give him the shot with me holding him and when that didn't work she asked me to leave and when she did that I noticed her hand was shaking. I'm sure all your staff knows that animals are very good at detecting this sort of nervous energy and oftentimes it makes them uneasy too. I walked up front I guess imagining this situation was sort of normal, waited for them to bring Cooper back to the lobby, removed his muzzle, politely paid, and left. It wasn't until I got home and took him for a walk around the block that I realized other visits to the vet and/or groomer in the past haven't been nearly as traumatic for anyone involved as this trip had been. I decided then that it would probably be best for everyone, especially Cooper if we tried somewhere else next time. I can't imagine he'll ever feel at ease walking through those doors again. I suppose I did learn from this experience that I should probably explain that he can be a little skittish and to approach him calmly in the future when introducing him to people that are going to poke and prod him. And I'll certainly never have him wearing a pinch collar to the vet again either.I thought I'd reach out and explain what happened because I know as business owners you always want to know how you can do better and so you wouldn't have to wonder when I request his transcripts sent over to the Loop. I have nothing but excellent remarks about Dr. Grier and Old Shell Road Animal Hospital. CASHEW has been with them since he was six weeks old and they have given my sweet baby much love, affection and attention as possible. She takes her time to speak with you to explain in detail anout her concerns of what is going on with Cashew. My husband and I love, love Dr. Cross and her staff. We had been taking our boys to another veterinary in the area and we never felt like they listened to us especially in regards to our oldest cat, Oreo. Any time we mentioned to them that Oreo seemed to be coughing while elongating his neck we were told it was just a hairball. We even showed them a video of his supposed "hairball" and told them it looked a lot like an asthma attack but $100 dollars later it was just a "hairball". Well, we had enough and after some research we found Old Shell Small Animal Hospital. On our first visit Dr. Cross listened to what we had to say, watched the same video we had shown the other veterinary clinic, and immediately agreed it was a respiratory issue. Long story short after some trial and error with our baby not being cooperative on the sedation, which they kept us very informed on, he was finally diagnosed with asthma on the first visit. Dr. Cross has since become Oreo and his brother, Chance, regular vet. With every visit they treat our fur babies with care and compassion; even going so far as to do Oreo's exam away from other animals to prevent undue stress on him which could trigger an asthma attack. Dr. Cross and her staff is very knowledgeable, prices are reasonable, they keep you informed of what they are doing or will need to do to treat your pet and will discuss prices/treatment options that fit your budget while helping your pet. My husband called last Thursday regarding spaying a stray that stays around our house so that there were no more strays created. We were quote $138 to spay and give shots. When he picked her up today, he was charged $245, which included fluids and pain medication. Super upset this wasn't addressed initially! Will never recommend a vet that hides cost! Read Less

She explains what to expect and creates a solid, cautious health care plan with you for the immediate and the long term health of your pet. She takes the time to consider all possibilities of your pet's symptoms and has caught problems that were missed elsewhere. Don't let the modest digs fool you. Dr. Cross did me a huge solid by 'not' doing any unnecessary tests or blood work when she could have easily gotten away with it.
