I selected Chester Valley to treat my cats itchy ears due due to the proximity to my home, choosing to give the benefit of the doubt when it came to the other negative reviews. This is something I consider to have been a mistake, and I feel it is very important to provide awareness to other potential visitors/patients on the level of care that they might receive. During the clinic visit, the vet was very verbally pushy in regards to scoping my cats ears that day, despite concerns about the invasiveness, cost, necessity, or planning of this procedure. This was not reflected on the paper records that were provided to me, but I assure you, the verbal conversation was quite different. In addition, this same vet also insisted verbatim that cats cannot sneeze. Yes, you've read that correctly. She did not say this as a joke. That is the wording she used verbatim... "cats can't sneeze". In follow-up communication, the clinic blatantly refuses to acknowledge that this was said, and instead refers to the paper records which do not reflect the verbal conversation that took place. She prescribed medication, which I used according to her directions. However, we did not return for the "recommended" follow up care as I did not trust the clinic based on their insistence that cats are incapable of sneezing. I put "recommended" in quotes to further highlight how pushy/aggressive she was to have a scoping of the ears done right then and there. For me, these two things alone call into question the level of care and professional knowledge of the vet and associated clinic. In addition, this clinic's communication in the face of a negative review has been quite poor. Instead of actually addressing the issue at hand, they have repeatedly had my reviews removed on a technicality and went out of their way to send a personal stating that we are not welcome back at their clinic. I'm sure it goes without saying, we had absolutely zero intention of seeking treatment here again. Read Less

The handling of the clinic visit on top of their management of social media/handling negative reviews doesn't bode well for me in regards to their professionalism or reliability. Read Less

The staff members have taken care of my (parent's) geriatric pets with true compassion. We took them to a "big" hospital only to be told to do the same tests over and over and not listening to the real problem. No improvement and paying hundreds of dollars for nothing. Dr. Kesting took the time to really pay attention to the concerns of my dogs and goes over the plan with care. When one of my pugs passed away, we notified them of her passing, and out of no where we get a card of condolences. The staff members felt our pain and were compassionate about the whole situation. We still continue to see them for other dogs and they continue to take care of us each time. I love that they are a local business and also do volunteer work for the community. I've also seen staff members off of work and they were just as kind. Thank you Chester Valley! They also have a good deal for a bath, anal gland expression and nail trim, but I'm pretty sure not in that order (lol). My pug and Chihuahua go there about almost monthly for that! Aw man some of these reviews are horrible sounding but I thought we had a great experience here! We moved to the Anchorage area last summer and after making the long drive from Georgia to Alaska, we had to bring our 1 year old French Bulldog to a vet immediately when we arrived. I loved our vet in GA and was so worried about finding a new one here. I called around to see who could get us in and they told me to come on in whenever. They were very accommodating and also worked very hard to make sure she was taken care of even though we did have a budget that day. The most assuring thing was when the vet mentioned before I could, her being a brachycephalic breed and making sure to follow the correct protocol should there be any need to sedate. Phew!! Sigh of relief that I didn't have to worry about her breathing issues and I immediately felt comfortable. All in all, great experience and we will be back in a few months for annual check ups! Chester Valley was our family's vet when we first arrived in Alaska, however, we bought a house and moved to the Valley. Yes, we had a vet out here but Chester Valley knew our girls and had a solid connection. About a year ago our mama lab (Daisy) got sick we brought her back, unfortunately we had to put her down due to age related issues. A few weeks ago we had to bring the daughter (Lilybug) in and put her down as well, both were seniors gals and we lovingly called them our 'Golden girls'! As a military family our girls had been on so many adventures with us and loved beyond words! Through both of these heartbreaking situations Chester Valley has been kind, compassionate, empathetic, and loved us/our girls through it. This is for you to decide. On August 19 our male dog had knee surgery performed at Chester Valley by a traveling surgeon. Our $3500 payment was made to Chester Valley, don't know how much went to the surgeon. About 10 days ago we had a follow up with Chester Valley to see how he was doing. There was an incident with some stairs so I elected to have X-rays done to make sure everything was OK. They were fine with examining him and looking at X-rays and charging me for all of it. Then on Saturday September 10 we were taking a trip with our dog and he fell while in our SUV. He started howling in pain and when I stopped his back legs were trembling very much. Plus he could not get up. We immediately called Chester Valley and were told that they take walk - ins until noon but "given the circumstances" they would see us if we came right in. This occurred at around 11:40 and we told them it would take 15 - 20 minutes to get their from where we were. We were told to just get there ASAP. We arrived at the clinic and my wife went in to talk to the staff and inform them we were there while I got the ramp off the top of the SUV. My mother in-law was here visiting from the lower 48 and was taking pictures. She happened to catch the large clock outside the clinic which recorded the time as 12:03. When I went in we were told we were too late and they would not see our dog. He was lying in the back of the SUV, trembling and would not stand up. I was then informed that since it was a specialized surgery the Doctor there didn't feel comfortable examining him and he was "technically" the surgeon's patient and not Chester Valley's. They didn't mind examining him and taking X-rays a week earlier. Nor did they object to taking my money. So they refused to look at him. They are probably going to answer this with things about staff burnout, setting boundaries, etc. but I do not think that after utilizing Chester Valley for a year or so with 3 of our dogs and thousands of dollars that we should have been treated like this over 3 minutes. Do you?Read Less

Not sure when the ownership changed on this place, but it did. The staff here does not care about the animals, it is all about the money to them. The Vet does not do a complete job or exam of your animal, just what she was asked to do, nothing above and beyond. My dog just had surgery, not even a week ago and this is the worst job of stitches I have ever seen. They did a hatchet job on my Blue Nose. Whatever lab she uses can't tell by the samples she takes if it is cancerous or not. So either she doesn't take a sufficient sample or the labs just are horrible. So I had to pay for a second lab. They are over priced and not willing to work with you...I had 1,000 for the surgery, but was not flying back into town until the next day and was possibly going to be 147.00 short, the office manager said they would "withhold" doing something that would cost that amount until I could pay for it, oh by the way....this was the second lab fee the office manager was not willing to wait for. The surgery ended up only about $860.00. They do not follow very good instructions and do what they want anyway, regardless that you as an owner might know your dog a little better. I would not recommend even a stray animal to go to this clinic, they'd turn it away because it couldn't pay!! I am just sick over this clinic and what a horrible job they did on my dog, both the Staff and the Vet. My vet of 30 years just retired and I was trying to find a new vet that was as good and loving with animals.....this is not the place for me and I am sorry I ever tried it. I've been (and my Mom) taking our dogs to Chester Valley since I was a kid.  We had to put my beloved Husky to sleep at the age of 15 back in 1999... We cried and the staff cried with us. They later sent a card with a clipping of his tail ... That meant to much to us.  I still have it! The previous owner/Vet, during a checkup, told me my Pomeranian puppy had a bad knee and needed knee surgery... Around $3000. I was floored and guilt stricken as I couldn't afford that as a poor college kid. Long story short, maybe we were lucky, but he has never had knee problems.  Fast forward to 2013 and my now 9 year old Pomeranian decided to show off his beautiful stride and ran out in front of a SUV and was hit.  We scooped him up and drove to Chester Valley. They saw us right away, explained they thought he might have a shattered pelvis and had to wait as he was in shock ... Everyone there really seemed to care and were very sympathetic and kind. The new Vet/owner (forgive me I can't recall her name) was upfront and explained everything in terms big dummies like me could understand :). After the x-rays were taken I asked about his knees - they were perfect! He made a quick recovery and one of the Vet Techs stayed with him the whole time - Oh, and no shattered pelvis but his right hip was dislocated. Pom 1 - Two ton SUV 0 !!Last winter I surprised my husband with a Siberian and Chester Valley is his place, of course. I was so happy to see that they were opening a pet boarding area! (How great is it to see a locally owned small business expand?!) We had a trip planned so I arranged his stay. I brought him down with our toddler (those two are BFFs) and when they took him back to the kennels my little toddler FREAKED OUT screaming for her puppy .. I was so embarrassed and felt like the worst Mom in the world!! LOL. A couple workers came out (you couldn't NOT hear her wailing) and told her they'd take good care of her puppy. So sweet! I don't know how the prices compare to other places but the kind things they do mean a lot to our family and they will have our business for life! Read Less

This clinic is out to price gouge you with fees! We used them for a health certificate for our dog to travel to Mexico. They first tried to get us to use a 7001 form (the most expensive) but then I called the USDA vet who needs to sign that form and she said there was an easier cheaper one that is just a letterhead. So she sent the forms to the clinic and they used that. After they then charged us $250.00. I called around to 2 other offices which would have charged $90 and $120. I called to ask them if we were mischarged and they said it was a fair price. They stated that it was because their staff needs to do research and fill out the forms (which we were the ones who told them about the new form). The total visit time was 30min and they claim the 4 page document deserves 250!!! We also had our dog neutered there and they "sold" us on doing bloodwork at the same time while he was out. My dog had cancer that was supposedly not removable (told to me by my previous vet), but Dr. Kesting was able to remove the cancer completely. The after care instructions were difficult and long but the end result was perfect. My only concern is that their parking lot is a little too small. On busy days, it can be difficult to find a space. She was obviously very knowledgeable, and fortunately for me very patient as I am one of those people that requires a lot of information. She took the time to explain everything in a way that I could comprehend as a lay person in a heightened state of anxiety. But every bit as important as that is the fact that she was (and always is) exceedingly kind, empathetic and warm. I was thrilled when she opened her own practice regardless of it being across town from me, and over the years I have entrusted all of my pets into her care. When my Great Pyrenees, Ally was nearing the end, seemingly overnight she could not bear to be moved. It broke my heart to think that I would have to put her through so much pain and fear to get her to Chester Valley just to say goodbye. I called Dr. Kesting and par for the course she came through for me. That evening she showed up at my house and allowed Ally’s last moments to be surrounded by her loved ones in the comfort and familiarity of her home. Shannon was there with hugs and understanding in our time of sorrow. Most recently our newest addition, a very active puppy, ran under our deck and came out with a badly bleeding foot. My daughter called me at work after she realized the bleeding was not going to stop. I rushed her to Chester valley, while phoning to say I was on the way. Even though it was evening and they were closing up shop they assured me they would stay. The minute I entered everyone sprang into action and started to take care of my frantic situation. Apparently she had stepped on a small nail that had punctured an artery. Dr. Kesting calmly took control, immediately got her into surgery and saved her little life. Now she is as good as new and terrorizing us in puppy fashion. I could go on about my eldest daughters bulldog with the skin condition or the fact that Dr. Kesting saved a one eyed kitten that was found in a dumpster by taking her in to her own home or the other animals that have been given food, shelter and love to reside at the clinic rather than meet an untimely end due to her kindness. I consider myself very lucky to know her and find comfort in the fact that she will be there when I inevitably need her again. Read Less

Comfortable and homey. The staff appears to really care. The vets are very knowledgeable and seem to be very up to date with the latest medical advances. I have been told that they have hired a new vet and will be expanding appointment hours to alleviate some of the very heavy traffic volume at certain hours. I would recommend them to anyone. Dr. Kesting has been a great vet for my cats. She is smart, caring, and dedicated to her work, which is a great combination. When I found that one of my cats had an eye infection just as the clinic was closing for the night, she put off personal plans to deal with it. The infection was gone in a couple of days. I would recommend the clinic to anyone. Read Less

As a life long Alaskan and a pet owner for over 45 years, I can not say enough good things about the amazing Dr. Kesting and her staff. Dr. K saved our sweet cats life when all other vets said that we should put her to sleep. We were blessed with 3 more years with our happy and healthy cat. Dr. Kestings kindness and willingness to go the extra mile for our cat truly sets her apart from all other vets in Anchorage. Dr. K and her team followed up with us on a regular basis to make sure that we understood what needed to be done after the life saving surgery as well as continued to follow up when our cat was well. We now have a new addition to our family in a 10 month old cat ~ Chester Valley is our vet of choice and I would never consider taking our family anywhere else. Read Less

I cannot recommend Dr. Kesting and her staff more highly. I have a 15-year-old dog who has moved all over the country with me, so we’ve seen a lot of vets. Dr. Kesting is, hands down, the best. What distinguishes her is her combination of medical competence, people skills, and animal love. She’s great with my dog, and she’s also great with me. She’s very good about keeping me appraised of the situation and explaining things in as much detail as I want. She is also affordable and sensitive to the kinds of cost-benefit decisions that pet owners have to make. Muldoon is a bit of a haul for me from west Anchorage, but it’s totally worth it. I recommend Chester Valley to everyone who asks! Read Less

I never post reviews online however when I read an earlier, defamatory review of Dr. Shannon Kesting I felt I needed to step up to defend her. My experience with Dr. Kesting began years ago when I brought my aging German Sheppard in to be seen at PetER. Read Less
