There aren’t enough words I can use to express how thankful we are for Dr. John and the rest of the staff at Hillside. It was Dr. John’s expertise that was able to save our bunny’s life when she went into cardiac arrest before her surgery. He turned what could’ve been an extremely heartbreaking day for our family into a day of hope and happiness. The staff kept us informed throughout the entire process and even called us a couple times throughout the week just to check on our Lola. The entire staff is so friendly and you can tell they genuinely care about our fur babies. We travel all the way from Eagle River just to make sure our bunnies are receiving the best care possible. On 13 September 2017 I brought in my 5 year old bearded dragon Rose for a check up since she was going into burmation and this was her first time doing so. I had the misfortune of having Dr. John Mastrobuono checking her out. After checking her out and telling me she could have had a number of different sickness and that she could have spread it to my other two dragons. He advised me to have her vaccinated and then to re-hydrate her intravenously. Through out the next few ...hours of very nerve racking waiting in the exam room we were given the bill of close to $800. When driving back home she started to make noise and then went through a series of strong seizures and then died in my arms. We immediately called and returned to the clinic and was seen by Dr. Mastrobuono who checked her out and then confirmed she had passed. His attitude was horrible and I had to have my friend deal with telling that we wanted to have a refund. The clinic did refund all but the doctors fee since the manager felt that the doctor should still be paid for his time. Rose had kept me calm through my PTSD and depression since retiring from the Army. The reason I am writing this now instead of right after she passed is I wanted to make sure it was as balanced as possible. I feel that Dr. Mastrobuono was too inexperienced and trying to up sell services she did not need and Rose died because of it. A part of me died when she died and that the staff or anyone even bothered to call a day or so to at least do the check the block call to say anything. I have a 4lb yorkie that ate a 120lb black labs pain medication when it fell to the ground. I called Hillside veterans and they calmed me down and walked me through what I needed to do. I was very surprised to see my highly anxious dog being playful and curious instead of pacing around the exam room and making obnoxious noises as she normal does at the Vet. It didn't take too long for Dr. John to calm my dog down and relax her. He was very professional, patient, and genuinely cared about my dog. Really fantastic. We went out of town for a month and left our pet rabbit with family (and while they took great care of him for the most part, they fed him a few too many veggies so he refused his hay and got GI stasis). They made room for us to come in that day. The vet took great care of our bunny and gave us the meds we needed and plenty of helpful information. They kept him comfortable and remained patient with him (he can be quite stubborn). In addition, he needed his nails clipped and they did that for free while we were there. Really wonderful service. I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Gump and I was so excited to say that this was one of the best routine exam visits I've ever had. They get you into a room as soon as possible, so your pet doesn't get upset by others in the lobby. Then, the technicians are incredibly friendly and accommodating. The amount of time I got to spend with the vet was foreign to me. I had run out of questions about my pet and the other one that I had left at home! He was great at listening and allowed me to explore options for dental care for my pup, which ultimately resulted in a recommendation to not go forth with a dental procedure! I at first only went to Hillside pet clinic because of Dr. Jackie. Who in my opinion is the best Avian vet in Alaska. I took my little yorkie poo to have her spade The front desk went way above and beyond the call of duty. They called me when she went in to surgery, then call and suggested I not wait on another procedure, then they called when she was waking up. I just can't say enough about the people at this clinic right now. My husband and I had to make the extremely difficult decision to have our beloved dog of over 13 years put to sleep a few days ago. The staff at Hillside made a really tough time a little easier. Everyone there was so sympathetic to us as they prepared our little girl for her final sleep. Some even shed tears for us...the vet (Dr. Kristen Holmes) was wonderful. She made sure things went at our pace and never made us feel rushed. When it was time for the final moments, she actually came in and sat with us for a while and just wanted to hear about our dog and her life and stories. It made my husband and I feel so much calmer. After it was over and we had said our last goodbyes, the vet herself came back in as we were leaving, to sit with our dog's body until the cremation people came to pick her up so she wouldn't be alone. Wow. So touching. Then to top it all off, we got a very personalized sympathy card from the staff in the mail before the bill even came. What business even does that anymore? 4/4/2016I ended up paying $713.79 for my 1 year old cat to be spayed! After the first visit my bill was $457.75. They put a soft cone on her and sent her home. I had her home for 20 minutes and noticed her stomach was open. I brought her back and was charged an additional $256.04. They said she was able to chew her sutures out even though the cone was on. 4/5/2016The manager called me the next day. He said they make a mistake by charging me extra to re-stitch. I originally gave this clinic a 1 star rating due to an issue listed below however I have since changed my rating because upon hearing of my discontent I received a call from the clinic manager who was apologetic and said the re-stitch charge was billed in error. She has since reversed the charge and as a customer few things are more important then knowing that a business will not only take ownership of their mistakes but diligently take it upon tbemselves to rectify then. Thank you Hillside Pet Clinic. We paid $700 for a cat spay. The spay itself was $450 but within 20 minutes of getting home the stitches came out (with a cone on) and immediately called and returned the charge for the re-stitch was an additional $250. Great service, girls are really friendly. My Quaker PARROT, seemed to know the doctor was helping her. Her beak was maldeformed. He cut it and dremeled it and she if fine niw. She even can eat pellets, as it was hard for her to do before. Avian Doctor!!! Read Less

One of our dogs has allergies and we have had to make same day appointments. They get us in within the hour that we call. They walk us through what is going on with our dog, give us many options as to how to move forward, and are upfront about costs before any decision is made.
