Pet Emergency Treatment Inc

Anchorage, Alaska
General Info
Pet Emergency Treatment is open 24 hours to provide emergency and critical care. We work closely with your pet’s regular veterinarian and send our findings to them for follow up care. It is our intention to specialize predominantly in the emergency treatment of sick and injured animals. For this reason, we don’t perform spays/neuters or dental work.
Pet Emergency Treatment service was established in 1978 by local veterinarians who saw the need to come together and share the workload in order to support an after-hours location so that in case of emergencies there would always be a doctor available. Pet Emergency Treatment is still supported by the veterinarians in Anchorage and the surrounding areas (e.g., Eagle River, Seward, Kenai). Pet Emergency Treatment is designed and dedicated to providing the best possible emergency medical and surgical services for your pet when your regular veterinarian is not available. We moved to a state of the art facility in 2006 to facilitate this goal. And, as of 2011, we have upgraded to a digital x-ray unit on site that allows us to burn to CD. With experienced veterinarians to interpret the x-rays, we can save precious moments and make the difference between life and death in an emergency.
- What is an emergency? Any unforeseen medical or surgical problem your pet may have which you determine requires professional attention. A few examples include fight wounds, porcupine encounters, severe coughing, vomiting and or diarrhea, bleeding, any accident, poisoning, or other severe or acute disorders.
Pet Emergency Treatment also has a migratory bird permit which allows us to temporarily treat migratory birds.
In 2007, and every year afterward, the staff at Pet Emergency Treatment Inc. has successfully completed a rigorous, voluntary accreditation process through the American Animal Hospital Association. This process requires that the hospital meet specific, nationally recognized standards in various aspects of veterinary medicine. These included surgery, emergency medicine, client service, medical records, pain management, patient care, diagnostic imaging, and continuing education. This accreditation is only shared with about 13% of veterinary hospitals across the country and we are proud to be one of them.

Horrible bedside manner. We took our dog in with difficulty breathing, I thought she was choking on something, they whisked her to the back. The receptionist told us it would be $700 up front for the vet to even examine her. $960 later we found out our family pet had heart failure and cancer. Then they started pushing their elite euthanasia package on us for only $440 with a complimentary paw print. Read Less

I had an 11yr old Shih-Tzu since 8 was old he passed away . I was very distraught hurt crying and asking my self why. Receive call to pick up my baby boys cremation and did so. 4 hrs later received another call from pet er stating they gave me the wrong cremation. I was very shocked why did they do this. When you give cremations to an owner, before you submit to the owner the pet er providing the service is to double check double check before cremations are released when I initially went to pick up my boys ashes I could barely speak as so much tears were rolling down me face. And the fact that I had to go back and get my boys ashes and return whomever ashes they gave me was so uncompassionate non caring. I asked how could this have happen they did not respond this is one of many reasons I would never recommend anyone to take their pet to pet er in anchorage Read Less

I took my 12 week old puppy here a couple weeks ago. I drove up from Seward at 8pm and was there for 5hrs and drove back home at 3am. It was a long night of mostly waiting, which is fine, I understand how a triage system works...However I originally took Mak up to the emergency clinic because her belly was extremely swollen, she was vomiting, lethargic, wasn't eating. My girlfriend and I were worried it could be an emergency (stomach bloat or something worse). The staff was all nice enough. Finally at 230am the doctor came to look at Mak. She didn't give me any specific diagnosis. She said it could be a plethora of "could be's" and said she wasn't worried about the health of my pup. Great, I think...That's great news so I drive home and arrive at 5am, long night but worth it. A few days later Mak hasn't improved, her belly is even bigger. I make the drive back to Anchorage again and take her to a different vet where I got some answers. We had an Xray performed, multiple blood work tests, and an ultrasound. Mak has a liver shunt and if untreated she would have died. Her belly was completely filled with fluid. Ammonia was building up in her bloodstream and seeping into her brain causing a lot of weird symptoms. So...maybe this review isn't geared towards PET as an establishment...but more towards the doctor that sent us home. I can understand missing something during an examination, but to not even order an Xray or any sort of test beyond a physical examination is ignorant. In my opinion it was a complete waste of time and I could have started treatment for Mak sooner if we had gone to the other 24hr clinic. Dakota Read Less

As you all know , if you are at pet emergency ,it is high anxiety. Had to take my cat in because he was having trouble peeing and seemed to be extremely uncomfortable, (would cry anytime you’d look at him or try to pet him). The ladies at the desk are extremely nice and funny and made me feel much more relaxed and were able to get Pickles right in. Pickles had a bladder blockage and had to stay overnight so they could monitor him. They gave me a quote and my bill ended up being LESS expensive than quoted. When we picked him up the explained ...how to administer his medicine and suggested a diet change. I’ve taken my pets for emergencies to Dimond Animal Hospital, but due to recent ill stories about them and h personal experiences I decided to try Pet ER. I’m very glad I did and will be continuing to go to Pet ER for all my emergencies in the future. Thank you so much for taking care of my Pickles so well! See More Read Less

I brought my dog in who was visiously throwing up and didn't seem right. The minute I got there the night staff were extremely judgemental, as if I was over exaggerating. They said he had a stomach ulcer but they wanted to do some blood work. A full CBC and check up was $280 not including medications. When I got home not only two hours later my dog was barely breathing and his tongue was off to the side what seemed like minutes from death. I brought him back in and said "there's no way this is a stomach ulcer" please help him he's dying. They looked directly at me and said "there's some criticals in the back you'll have to wait" when they realized my dog was barely conscious they brought him back pumped him with fluids and attached him to oxygen. Once he was more stable they wanted to do X-rays and quoted me at $600 not including treatment. My dog was suffering from aspiration pneumonia that needed 24 hour care. I was there every two hours which is what annoyed them most. They let him sit in his pee and not get him up or let him walk. They told me my dog was dying and that he wasn't going to beat this fight. After 36 hours and $3000 dollars later; without a payment plan or a discount for me having to bring him back in, I took him home. I was up for 72 hours doing more for him than they did in 20 minutes. He is now making a full recovery and I will NEVER go there again🖕🏼 Read Less

Avoid this facility if it’s an emergency. We waited for nearly 3 hours before anyone took vitals of our dog. Then it was another 30 minutes before the vet came in to do an examination. After recommending x-rays and sedation and long term treatment, we opted for a 48 hour treatment so we can follow up with our normal vet. There seemed to be a bit of judgement at our decision. Before any sort of treatment, we had to wait for a bill and pay so our dog could be treated which meant more waiting. While our dog was diagnosed and treated, there was a lot of frustration for all of us. Communication between staff is lacking and adds to the overall frustration. If you have other options, I’d recommend using them instead. Read Less

These guys definitely saved my Flat Coat Retriever, I was very hesitant to use anyone but my vet at Highland (off old Seward/Klatt). But when my canine severed an artery 2 hours from anchorage, I had to bring him somewhere immediately. By the time I arrived to the Clinic, my dog was in a pool of blood and critical shape. They immediately stabilized him and began preparing for surgery. They discovered he also severed 5 of 5 tendons in one paw. They fixed his artery and reconnected the tendons best as possible. They are the only choice for serious pet traumas in my opinion and very fairly priced for what you get. Read Less

I had a very tough time swollowing the number that gave me for the estimates of what had to be paid but the staff was absolutely AMAZING and very patient. They were sympathetic and had no problems answering all of my questions. They truly cared and honestly had the upmost respect for me and my family as we struggled to figured out what to do financially an...d how to do it. The techs were more than amazing also! Whoever the nice lady is that was working with Jeremy was very nice and professional and I want them to know how much they made my experience there so great! My dog is happy, healthy and staying another 12 hours to be safe and make sure he’s healed enough to go home. Huge shout out to this place and their process! I can only imagine the amount of people that go through this place who are hurting and take out their frustrations on the staff. I really do hope that all the staff who worked with me and my dog Boost get to see this post and get some recognition for their professionalism and empathy towards their clients. (2/9/18-2/11/18) They work hard and i’m sure they don’t get paid enough for putting up with the things they do, i’m sure they do it because they get to work with amazing animals all day! 💜 See More Read Less

I’ve never dealt with Pet Emergency, until the day after Christmas. My beloved Bailey had been diagnosed with cancer right after Thanksgiving. The day after Christmas she took a turn for the worse and we ended up at Pet Emergency, where I had to make the decision to have her euthanized. The entire staff was compassionate, kind and treated Bailey and my family as though we were part of their family. A week later, I received a condolence card, with each member of the clinic writing a personal note. It was a class act, and I am so thankful that we were allowed to be with Bailey and that she was taken care of by people who genuinely cared. Read Less

“Banadaged the wrong foot” How does this place still have four stars? I was in there today to get stitches out of my pups foot. They told me I came too early, even though my paperwork said come today. Then proceeded to tell me Infront of the lobby how I poorly re bandaged my pups foot, after theirs fell off. Gave me a lecture about keeping it clean. (Meanwhile a dog peed on the floor and had been 5 mins and continuing with no clean up). They tell me to keep this special... bootie on his foot to keep it from elements.... meanwhile my dog is licking his foot frantically(not the newly bandaged foot) I walk him outside to the truck only to find.... THEY BANDAGED THE WRONG FOOT!!!! So he was in their filthy public lobby walking around with exposed wounds, while his other foot was supposedly properly bandaged. Thanks for the lecture and “cleaning his wounds”. I rushed back in to inform them. They assure me how simple of a mistake it was, then started to wrap the right foot.... then cinched it down, on the stitches, and super loose on his paw! I couldn’t believe it.... what a joke and shame on you. This is my second bad experience with this clinic and I will strongly advise friends to avoid it. See More Read Less

We first brought our very sick dog here a year ago, after she was undiagnosed with a severe issue from another hospital. She was treated, referred, and also hospitalized. Since then, we have used Pet ER exclusively until we find another vet capable of taking care of her unique problems. It is expensive, but we have repeatedly gotten quality treatment and advice from them. The inexperience of the front desk staff shows at times, but we have been treated with care and respect. Dr. Walton (the internist who travels to AK) is one of the most knowledgeable animal physicians I have come across. He takes so much time to discuss issues, answer questions and give options. The Vets and techs on staff have a wonderful knowledge base, and are caring and compassionate. I would recommend this hospital for care for your pet. Read Less

Wow don't even think about coming here for specialty services if you're not in the Anchorage area; their communication is horrendous. We had a CT scan scheduled earlier this month for our male cat, one that had been booked out for weeks. We were going to drive down from Fairbanks on a Sunday, have him seen on the Monday and drive back either later that day or on Tuesday. They called and told my husband the internal medicine specialist they fly up from Seattle once a month ...had to cancel due to a family emergency; they said he was coming back for 1 Nov. We were flying back from Hawaii, due to get in that morning. Since we both were already off from work, we agreed and booked plane tickets to Anchorage. A turn and burn plane trip made more sense than getting in at 7 am and driving down 6-7 hours to Anchorage. And did I mention the roads up here are pretty bad right now? The Tuesday before we left Honolulu my husband calls the vet office to make sure we're still good; yup, still good for Thursday. We get in Wednesday morning, run home, shower, change, pack another bag, and get our cat ready to go. Our flight, which was originally supposed to leave at 3:25 pm, is delayed an hour. At exactly 4 pm on the dot the specialty services practice manager calls my husband to tell him the damn CT scanner went down on Tuesday; the doc prefers a CT but says they can get him in for an MRI on Friday afternoon. So we're supposed to reschedule all of this because you guys didn't alert everyone in a timely manner? I have work on Saturday, a Friday afternoon MRI (with an overnight for my boy's recovery) is not feasible. The practice manager seemed to not grasp the concept of us flying in, with the excuse of, "Oh, I'm from Seattle, I don't know where everything is in Alaska." If you guys are having outside vets referring patients in, and having people fly their pets in on their own to see your specialists, I suggest you get a rudimentary understanding of where stuff is here. I'm not from here either, but I at least generally know where the major cities are. Luckily our tickets are good for a year, and I could cancel the rental car and hotel with no penalty. But the lack of customer service is appalling. They may be fine if you're local, but we already told our local vet in Fairbanks not to refer people to them due to their poor communication. They're very lucky it was my husband they were dealing with and not me. See More Read Less

Don't go here. My parents took their elderly dog there tonight because he has been very ill and the last 2 weeks they had fed him anything he would eat from canned dog food to steak, he was not starved. They made the decision to put him down instead of spending $100s to $1,000s of dollars to try and save him. They called and spoke to the receptionist and told her he was thin and dying and she was very compassionate. When my father got there he was ostracized and belittled over the condition of the dog. They had the nerve to ask him if he was going to have anymore pets and if he planned to let them get this sick too? I'm truly surprised that this woman found a latter high enough for her to step down from her high horse to accept payment for the procedure. Like the experience of putting an animal down isn't hard enough???? I only wish I had been there so she could attempt to speak to me in that manner. He did say the vet was nice. Read Less

I was searching google for a good local dog groomer for me sand my husband's newly adopted 2 year old Jack Russell! Reading the list of local business related to my search, I read down the list and stopped when I got to the listing for Pet Emergency Treatment here in Anchorage at the intersection in the corner of Dowling and Lake Otis. My heart sank as I read the many reviews of what I already know to be absolutely true from personal experience: Pet Emergency Treatment customer review after review here, written by pet owners screwed over by this pet emergency room, their reviews include statements about: the horrible service in its entirety given to pet patients and their owners at Pet Emergency Treatment the mindful neglect of this facility's staff. Mindfully neglecting pet patients and owners by purposely deciding to not communicate with or assist owners with a private consultation and a basic physical examination of their pet-in a timely manor appropriate for a thought emergency situation illconsistent with inital "triage" on arrival and the flow of pet patients waiting or called back. The pet owners who went to this pet ER that were just left to sit in the building's front reception desk and waiting area with their ill/injured pet for hours at time before any kind of assistance or consult with a basic exam was given. The money they screw out of Pet Owners without a single damn care for the vitality of your pet. Every pet owner that goes to Pet Emergency Treatment is told to pay an initial amount of money, amounts charged vary randomly from pet to pet, before any actual vet will talk to you and do a basic one minute type exam of your pet. Pet owners at Pet Emergency Treatment have to pay this initial charge to then proceed forward to then be given a printed invoice with treatments/tests the vet picks for your pet listed each as an individual item with its cost. Payment in full for items on this bill is due right then, immediately at that exact moment. No exceptions. Pet Emergency Treatment prices are grossly higher than the price of the same items at all other local veterinary clinics, some prices are triple or more at this pet ER than everywhere else. Why would Pet Emergency Treatment purposely and blatantly screw over pet owner's who are in distress about their sick pets without a care in the world? Because to the facility's staff why not? Pet Emergency Treatment staff members see your pet as a paycheck and nothing more. This facility's staff know that you as a pet owner are unaware of other options, you don't think you actually have any other options or choices, they know you are stressed as hell and scared for your pet when they hand you that bill...and all that makes for the perfect most prime opportunity to get as much of your money as they can! Pet Emergency Treatment is all about the money. They do not operate in the interest of loved animals. They operate in the interest of money. Do not think anything different of Pet Emergency Treatment. Pets have very often been given the incorrect or inappropriate medical treatments due to lack of through investigation and tests by vets that work there who have no care or concern for your pets vitality or wellness. Pets have lost their lives because of Pet Emergency Treatment's care. My own experiences with Pet Emergency Treatment solidify these reviews and facts to be true and accurate. My husband and I have given Pet Emergency Treatment literally thousands of dollars and referred multiple people there. Last year, our cat fell sick so called Pet Emergency Treatment said our cats a frequent patient , please look up our account and payment history, could we pay half of the bill now and half in two days, as we have a flawless payment history, we've given you guys thousands of dollars and have referred multiple pet owners that you have made lots of money from, would this be ok? They talked then. They said "no". I was in shock! I then said "What am I suppose to do let him just die cause I can't pay in full today?" They replied 'Yes" and hung up on me. Read Less

Had to wait about 6 hours for the surgeon to fix her up, (emergency rooms are always busy) but she now has a long line of purple stitches to show all her friends. The price was much higher than I would have paid at my own vet but glad they are open 24 hours for these kind of emergencies. Read Less

Worst experience ever. If you love your pet, take her/ him to another emergency clinic. My Babygirl was showing signs of extreme internal pain so we brought her in. Two visits and a hundreds of dollars later, they couldnt figure out what was wrong without an outside consultation for an additional fee on top of all the other fees, go figure. The vet promised to call that night if it was an emergency or first thing in the morning with an update. Late afternoon comes around and I still haven't heard from them so I call and was told the results aren't in. Called again around 7pm and was told the vet is busy. Finally an hour later the vet called and shares a ton of info with me that I was trying to process while on the line. After hanging up, I realized I still had more questions and wasn't sure what the issue was so I called back. Not only was the vet rude, but she sounded as if I had wasted her time for asking to speak with her. I had questions and I needed her to explain one more time so my fiancé could understands since he wasn't home at the time of the initial call. I have been waiting for the X-ray paperwork to be emailed to me for over 24 hours and every time I call, they say it's the system, wait another 24 hours. Today I called to refill her medications and was told we now have to wait for vet approval which could take another 24 hours even though the discharge paperwork states there is a note on file for us to refill the medication. I don't feel they care about my pet they way a pet clinic should. My dogs are my family, so I would appreciate it if the vet treating my pets - at any given time - treat them like family too.Read Less

We spent $890 and they mistreated and caused the death of my 4 year old cat. I took her here after she wouldn't eat and barely drank for three days. The tech did a physical exam and then the vet drew blood and did one X-ray. They had to keep her overnight to hydrate her via IV fluids. 2 hours later we got a call saying that they looked in her mouth and found thread wrapped around her tongue and going down her throat (something they should have caught in the physical exam). So we ended up paying $350 for unnecessary tests. Then they charged me for sedatives to open her mouth and cut the string. They told then that they would have to get her into exploratory surgery that would cost an additional $2500 that I no longer had after having paid for tests and overnight fluids in advance. I had to decline the surgery (the lady at the front desk later openly admitted that they charge 3 times what any vet clinic would). The next morning I picked my cat up and the tech who brought my cat to me couldn't answer any questions about her health or even if she had a bowel movement to pass the thread. When I got my cat there was urine all over her and in the bottom of the crate. When we declined the surgery they threw her in the corner in her crate and didn't care to keep an eye on her health. They spent most of what I had to spare for cash and did nothing but prolong her passing. They quoted me an insane amount for euthanasia so I couldn't even afford to put her out of her pain. She wouldn't have survived the surgery because her liver and kidneys were in bad shape but they wanted to anyway. If you don't want to risk your loved ones here, don't go. Read Less

Sunday night my boxer got very bloated and wouldn't eat and just wasn't acting like herself... I was worried she had bloat (twisted stomach). My husband and I called the front desk and asked their opinion and they suggested to bring her in. On the way there I was reading reviews and was worried about the cost or not being treated fairly...but worrying that I could lose my dog was worse. We brought her in and she was instantly taken to the back for xrays after they asked my permission. I filled out some paperwork and waited about 15 mins until a dr spoke with us in a room showing us the xray and thoroughly explained everything and gave her recommendation to keep my dog overnight for fluids and observation and repeat xrays. I called my sister, who is a veterinarian oncologist in Seattle, and she agreed. Before agreeing we were showed an itemized estimate with a lowest and highest price that we would pay and they explained what each thing was for. We did have to pay before treatment was initiated which is normal. I was called the next morning the same time they said they would call and picked her up that afternoon. The dr explained everything that happened throughout the night and showed the before and after xrays. We ended up overpaying by $30 and received the money back on our card when I picked her up. I had a very different HAPPY poochie now:) Overall my experience was WONDERFUL. Very nice, caring, engaged, and knowledgeable staff. I don't think the price was bad at all for the services we received (not that I put a price for my dogs medical treatment!) I definitely recommend for an emergency veterinarian :). Read Less

I felt like I was being scammed, they wanted me to sign a form that said I would pay $700.00 after they put him in the back before they even looked at him, I told them he had a cold two weeks earlier and that it was probably lung infection. I was in shock at having to pay that much in a deposit and I needed an estimate they gave me one with the high end at 640 approx. Wow I asked that I just might take him home and was told that I would have to sign a refusal of care, and the vet told me that they would probably call animal control who would call or show up to make sure i wasnt abusive, really now they really have me. Do not take your bird to this place. They are not experienced with avian care and, in my case, even allow your bird to die away from you and not tell you anything is wrong until after the fact. My bird went to this vet because it was late at night and my regular vet was closed. She had suddenly started coughing and losing her voice after I had given her medicine, but seemed to be recovering when I was on the way to the place. I sat in the car with her for a minute or two even wondering if she needed to go inside. She was breathing well again, only with a slight wheeze, but rapidly, so I decided that just to make sure I would take her inside. They took her away from me as soon as I got in to give her oxygen. Which is standard for bird's with respiratory issues. It was less than ten minutes later that a tech came out and said the doctor would be out with me shortly. She told me that they had just done a physical exam of my bird and that she would be out in a moment to speak with me. A few minutes later, the doctor comes into the room and just says straightly, "Your bird has passed away." I was in utter shock. I tried to ask what had happened, why they had not said anything, but the answers she gave were quick and vague. I asked to see my bird, and she agreed. It took them another five minutes to bring out her body. The doctor then just up and left, and I never saw her again. After all this I was charged 100 dollars. I'm afraid that the doctor mishandled my already stressed bird because the only thing I could get out of her was that after she had looked at my bird she put her back in her cage and she then started having breathing problems again and died within a few seconds. I'm really afraid they did not tell me the full story. I lost my best friend. I feel that in better care, she would still be with me. Please keep your avian friends away from this place. Read Less

Pet Emergency Treatment Inc

Anchorage, Alaska
(45)
2320 East Dowling Road
Anchorage Alaska 99507

From the time we walked in, we were welcomed. The receptionist was very nice. My Mia was very uncomfortable, restless, and panting when we brought her in. As her parents, we knew she was in pain, but we did not know she was pregnant. She needed a pretty urgent C-section due to baby's low heart rate. Dr. Valero and the Vet Tech took great care of my Mia. The puppy had a very low heart rate upon delivery. We did not expect a good outcome for him. The Vet Tech did an amazing job recovering him. I'm so glad mom and pup are okay and home. Mia is now also spayed. We also received very thorough post op instructions. Thank you so much for taking outstanding care of my fur babies. Read Less

Read Less

Read Less
