Veterinary Specialists of Alaska PC

Anchorage, Alaska
General Info
From humble beginnings as Alaska Veterinary Surgical Services (AVSS) in September of 1996, we have grown steadily into the multiple specialty, multiple doctor practice currently known as Veterinary Specialists of Alaska (VSOA).
Originally established by Dr. Mike Edwards, the practice has expanded from a surgery service to include physical rehabilitation and veterinary dermatology.
Although our name has changed to reflect the broadening scope of our practice and our family has grown, our goals have remained the same. As always, our number one goal is to provide you and your pet with the most advanced treatment options available.

Banjo was carried in with a ruptured disc on May 24 and walks out under his own power today July 18th. VSOA, you guys rock. I couldn’t have asked for a better group of people to care for my best friend. Dr. Valverde was instrumental in Banjo’s initial surgery, delicately removing the ruptured disc material without injuring the spinal cord. And Banjo just loved Kara, the physical therapist who worked with him for eight weeks on his road to recovery. The whole team including the front desk staff and all the techs were fantastic and Banjo wouldn’t be walking at all today without all their help. I would recommend VSOA to anyone needing specialized care.Read Less

We came here recently because my puppy, Finn, broke his leg and I have never been more impressed with a veterinary clinic in my life. Everyone here has been so caring, knowledgeable and loving with my pup. He had to have surgery and Dr. Edwards took the time to explain everything to us and made me feel very comfortable about the whole thing. I truly believe he was in the best hands possible. We have some follow up appointments and the front desk staff has also been so helpful in helping me schedule those around my work schedule. Everyone here has been so amazing and has given Finn the very best care! I couldn’t thank them enough! Read Less

Dr. Preziosi and her assistant are so incredibly compassionate and loving and it shows in their interactions with your pet. Our boxer suffered from bad allergies so he had to come in often for tests, but he loved it! They would get on the floor with him and accept puppy kisses and always had his little butt wiggling and tail wagging. Now he's able to be a normal dog and enjoy life rather than itching constantly. The entire staff is very patient, kind and knowledgeable. If your pup won't stop itching, this is the place you want to go. Read Less

We just picked our dog up today after having her second TPLO knee surgery with Dr. Edwards at Veterinary Specialists of Alaska. Both surgeries have been absolutely perfect. All of the staff are very kind and thoughtful. Dr. Edwards is truly wonderful. He is a fantastic surgeon. We came both times from out of town so that our dog could have the exemplary care provided by Dr. Edwards, Dr. Chang, and all of the incredible staff members at VSOA. Thank you all so much for everything. You do such great work and it is worth so much more than words can describe. We are forever grateful. Read Less

I wish I could say me and my dog had a great experience here but we didn't. It started off okay, staff seemed nice and Dr. Preziosi seemed to care. We went in with my dog due to skin and coat issues. I asked about it being allergies and told no it's not it. She had already been tested for thyroid and it was negative. We went in several times for visits and had more expensive tests. all negative. We were given silly treatments like melatonin and told she didn't know what was wrong with her, she was a hard case. She told me to give melatonin and email pics of her fur occasionally so she could see any progress. Surprise, there was no progress. During her cushings test, we dropped our dog off early in the morning. It's a long process so she was to stay the day. I called at noon to check on my dog and was told that she was not doing the test that day because my dog needed to be on antibiotics for a week longer for her skin condition but she didn't have time to call and tell me. My dog had to sit in their kennel for over 5 hours for no reason because she didn't have 2 minutes to call me and tell me that. I got there to pick up my dog and told them I wasn't happy that my dog couldn't get 2 minutes of their time so she could go home and it made me worry that if they don't have time to do that, then they probably don't have time to care for her back there. The office lady told me she agreed and all Dr Preziosi had to do was tell someone up front and they could've called. I was still charged $160 for that day. After that, Dr Preziosi lost all interest in finding out what was wrong with my dog. I again asked about allergies. I got a short "could be" and that was it. So a friend referred me to cornerstone where her dog got great care for allergies because I just felt that's what it was. I took my dog there and he looked at my dog and immediately diagnosed allergies. She's on meds now and is finally getting better. Her skin has cleared up and her fur is growing back in. I feel that a dermatologist should be able to diagnose simple allergies, but that's not profitable. Telling you that your dog is a hard case and needs expensive testing and bringing you back in because her skin isn't getting better is.Read Less

I was just looking at my FaceBook newsfeed and saw that Veterinary Specialists of Alaska came up as a suggested business for me to review. So review I will! My husband and I were so fortunate to have been given 14 years with our sweet, crazy, free-spirited Lab/Husky mix Moby for 14 years. He was the love of our life and brought us joy every single day. We moved to Alaska in late July, 2014. Moby was 13+ years old and was living with nerve sheath cancer. Shortly after we moved here, Moby started losing mobility in his back left foot. We were referred to Veterinary Specialists of Alaska and he soon started going to physical therapy every week and was thriving. In June, 2015, Moby began to experience extreme pain. Our regular vet said they couldn't fit him in until the following day, but Dr. Chang at Veterinary Specialists of Alaska cleared her schedule to fit him in right away. Unfortunately, we lost Moby that day. I still miss him each and every day. He was so special. But I will never forget the kindness of everyone at Veterinary Specialists of Alaska. I can't say enough good things about Veterinary Specialists of Alaska. I actually wish they weren't only specialists and did general vet care because I would love to take my other 2 dogs there for regular care. They are that good.Read Less

My dog received knee surgery from this clinic and I had a mixed experience. My dog is healthy and healing fine, but they performed more work on his knee than they had initially informed me they would do. They told me sawing his leg completely through and turning his foot out was a normal part of the surgery but they don't see until they are in surgery. I think if it's a normal occurrence it should be explained in the consultation. Also, my dog was not as injured as they had originally thought when they checked his joint with cameras and they didn't inform me of this before continuing the surgery. I just felt they didn't communicate very well with me. Also there were scheduling errors with rehab where I was expected to change my schedule and jump through hoops when it was their receptionist who messed up our appointments. I was greatly inconvenienced and they offered nothing to make it up for me. Overall, the surgery was successful but the information and customer service are lacking. Read Less
