Today my Mother decided to take her dog into this facility and what transpired while she was there was absolutely heart breaking.. As she was in the waiting room she had over heard a hysterical phone conversation with the receptionist and a woman that was coming to this facility as an emergency for her animal. Once the woman arrived she parked at the front crying for someone to come and assist her with her dog that was lying lifeless in her back seat. None of the women at the front tried to assist her by going outside. The woman then comes running inside hysterical, crying, for someone to help her and yet again, no one helped her. My mother then proceeded to go outside and help this stranger who was clearly in a panic and in need of assistance because her pet was in desperate need of medical attention. My mother and the woman proceeded to carry a full size (75/80lbs at least) Doberman into the office. Still, no one assisted them and they had to lay the dog down infront of the front desk. When my mom asked if they were going to help her, their response was “no one is trained up front” and “they are required to get a gurney”. This is beyond being “trained”, this is a matter of being a decent human being and helping someone when they are in dire need. After this, my mother was no longer comfortable with them treating her dog due to their lack of care and empathy for the woman who was in despite need of their help. She had asked them to return her dog 10 times and instead they had two people attempt to “explain” to her what had happened. There was no need for that because it was clear that this office does not care for their animal patients that come into their office. Before she was returned her dog, she was required to pay for the “office exam” that was $110.00 but that was never performed. Our family dog was never seen or assessed by a Vet in the office. We do not recommend this facility to anyone and if the women in the front are not “trained” to assist in emergencies, this should be something they should highly consider. As well as hiring people that have some type of care for their career and the people and animals that come into their office daily; emergency and non emergency alike. Read Less

We recently had to put our little Man down. As everyone knows, it's extremely difficult. Upon arrival, we were escorted quickly to a beautiful private room, every staff member were so compassionate, kind and considerate of our sorrow. As difficult as this was, 1st Pet made it the most bearable as possible. Shortly after, we received a beautiful card that we will keep forever. Staff didn't just sign names, they really expressed their feelings. Thank you so much for that. I have been to this clinic before with my other pups, service is always top notch. I would recommend this clinic to anyone. Read Less

If you can wait for scheduled appointment I would recommend going someplace else. This clinic is meant for those with very deep pockets and the need for a vet with a large ego and won't include you in decisions for your pet. I recently paid $97.00 to get health certificate to ship my dog back to the Midwest. Having shipped dogs many times I knew the price was very high however needed the health certificate and because of the short time I was in Arizona had not established a working relationship with another veterinarian. The vet refused to sign a acclimation waiver so so my dog could fly into Chicago with temperatures to a low of 20 degrees. The vet refused to accept anything I had to offer about my dog or my many years of experience with the breed. I had to go to another vet who only charged me $47.00 and made her decision to allow the dog to fly into temperatures to a low of 20 degrees. In her written justification for her decision she even noted it was based in part "in consultation with the owner." 1st Pet Veterinary Centers appear to be very much about the money and at least one vet with big ego. The facility is beautiful but the service is second rate at best. The only time you get top care is when you pay top dollar and even then it really just depends on if your pet is top on their priority list. My most recent experience with this place left a nasty taste in my mouth. I came in because my dog had been attacked by another dog and while the initial review of her was quick the promised "doctor care and consult" took more than 3 hours before someone came in the door. To add insult to injury it actually took me going out to pester the receptionist to find out what was going on. It didn't help, or make me particularly happy to see them checking on another person/patient while I was doing so. When I was subsequently informed of status of my visit I was told that I was already getting "invoiced" for the potential care of my dog without even talking to the vet which I was promised. The aftercare was worse. I, and my partner, had questions and I was met with uninformed staff and scare tactics instead of information. Information I got from another vet because I was worried that my dog was not being cared for properly and I was being intentionally misinformed for more money. It didn't particularly help that my dog was constantly called a "he" because of her name instead of the staff actually looking at her information. It felt like a doctor's office calling a kid named 'Kelly' a girl because it's primarily a female's name even though its a male name, male child and it has male roots. I was terrified for my dog and I felt like they were preying on that fear for money, not only money that I didn't necessarily have but money that they wanted to extract from me that was unnecessary because they were taking me, a scared dog parent, at only the basic uninformed information I provided them over the phone. I know tech support people that ask more questions for simpler things. Their answer to everything is "take them in, pay 110 dollars and we'll check on them!" If you go here it's because it's the only place open after hours. Other than that be expected to be disrespected if you are on a budget. Expect that they will look down on you if you don't magically have $1-2K to take care of something for your pet because you're not a good pet parent if you have a billion other responsibilities and no savings to take care of something like this. Expect that they will call your pet by whatever gender they feel is relevant to them because they don't have the sense or empathy to care about you or your pet. Read Less

We brought our beloved Rudy to 1st Pet last year. He was suffering from cancer in his leg. Dr. Waldo spoke with us and examined our Rudy. He was so kind and answered all of our questions. Two months later, we had to bring Rudy back to let him cross the rainbow bridge. The staff was amazing. They took my husband and me, along with our children to a large room so we could say goodbye. They allowed us all the time we needed to say goodbye. They did not rush us at all. A week later we picked up Rudys remains in a beautiful wooden box. The staff all signed a condolence card and mailed it to us along with his paw prints. Since then, we have taken our other 2 pups into the 1st Pet. They love Dr. Waldo and the rest of the staff! We brought our dog in after hours - after he had a seizure (has them on a regular basis) and was very anxious, pacing all over the place. When I called the office I was told we could get medication to calm him down but we needed to bring him in for an exam ($110). I went in, did the exam (a heart exam and temperature check)...they asked me a bunch of questions and then the doctor came and told me that there was no medication we could give our dog to relieve the anxiety. The only thing we could do is try to "limit " the seizures. I wish I was told there was no medication to give my dog when I called originally. The doctor seemed to know this right away - yet no one else there did. Seems like a scam...nice quick way to make $110 (do an "exam" and get paid). I am not so much upset that there is no medication for the anxiety, more at the idea that I spent and hour and a half of my time (plus $110) for nothing. I will not be referring this place to anyone unless they want to throw away $110.00. Read Less

Amazing pet hospital in an emergency. I had to rush my 3 year old Westhighland terrier to the pet hospital on 7/11/2017 in the evening after a rattlesnake bit hm on my back porch. We live next to the Superstition Mountains in Apache Junction.  It was so scary to go through a rattlesnake bite with my dog. IMy dod received top notch care from Dr Gassman at 1st Pet emergency pet hospital in Mesa Arizona.  Fred was admitted into triage and given pain medication immediately. He was kept comfortable while they tested his blood to look at blood clotting times and red blood cell counts. He was given pain medication, IV fluids, and antivenin to save his life. He was monitored and kept comfortable over night. Dr Gassman and her colleagues saved my sweet Fred from death.  I'm so thankful for them.  He is at home healing and making a full recovery thanks to their quality care.  The price for care was 1300.00 and is a reasonable price to pay for hospitalization and antivenin care.  I would take any of my pets to them again in an emergency.  Thanks Dr Gassman for saving my sweet Fred. I do not recommend this pet ER for the following reasons: 1) 5 hours waiting for my dog to be seen during the day is unreasonable. When staff brings an overflowing "human" snacks basket to your room I recommend asking why. 2) The front desk staff needs to be more informative when queried about the excessive wait time & need to inform about it when called before arriving. 3) I'm assuming the person that finally came into to treat my dog was the veterinarian but she didn't identify herself as such. 4) I was very uncomfortable about my dog being removed from the room and examined & treated out of my sight. 5) His paw bled throughout the wait and he is experiencing pain the next day yet he wasn't provided with anything for his injury. 6) I was told to take my dog to our regular vet for any follow-up, thus incurring another bill if needed. I was nervous about an emergency facility being hectic and making him more worried, but their no-fear policy made all the difference in the world. Dr. Butler was *incredible*. She was compassionate, kind, and took the time to let him get comfortable around her before getting in his business. She really knows how to make dogs comfortable! She made certain that I understood everything, gave me options, and I felt 100% confident in her assessment. Not to mention, the facility was *very* clean, didn't have that "vet smell", and the calm music was just what this worried mama needed. Prices were completely reasonable, no unexpected charges either. I sort of wish I could come back here for all of his care, just because this place was so nice! Thanks for everything!! Read Less

April 8, 2017 my daughters dog was involved in a brutal dog fight, major life threatening injuries. She took bleeding dog to 1st Pet, Southern, Mesa. I met her there to help calm her as she was covered in blood and dog was on table bleeding out. When I entered the exam room, my daughter was crying hysterically. I heard the Vet Tech state "well, I can ask the doctor to come and talk with you - but if "she" [Doctor] comes into the room, you may be charged an exam fee! She then said that she would be willing to talk to the doctor about the fee if she was only going to talk with us and not do an exam. I asked for privacy so we could make decision about our pets condition. The doctor NEVER came in to meet with us to discuss condition of dog. We ultimately decided to put the dog down. Once we made the decision, within MINUTES a clerk was in our face with a clip board explaining how much we would owe them to euthanize our pet. The only time we saw the doctor is when she came in to administer the LETHAL INJECTION. Staff was ALL ABOUT THE MONEY and displayed NO concern for our situation. I called to discuss my concerns only to get the same Vet Tech on the phone going point counter point with me. I was told the owner was not available as "he doesn't like to practice anymore" and promised the Manager, Dr. Nelson would call me, that never happened either. Absolutely terrible experience, no act of kindness, concern or compassion. To top it off, I pad $600.00 to put dog down and the doctor never met with us or even looked at our poor dying dog. My dog has been having seizure like episodes about every 6 months. I was very concerned and like a responsible pet owner I took my dog to 1st Pet and had her checked out. They first did an entire panel of labs. Then they told me her liver enzymes were elevated and it could be a sign of Hepatitis!! So I immediately freaked out and started Googling what that meant for my little girl. I was told I needed to come back for two more liver enzyme tests, which I did. Both tests came back with elevated liver enzymes so my dog was put on a large amount of antibiotics. I was so upset because the vet kept telling me it's a sign of an infection. My dog was then sent to a specialist at another one of their clinics and thousands of dollars later I figure out that all her elevated liver enzyme tests were because I was NEVER told my dog needed to be fasting before her bloodwork!!!!!I was then made to feel like it was MY fault!! I was then scolded like I was a child and told how lucky I was that they weren't charging me for ONE of the FIVE blood works I had done without fasting!! Let's not even talk about the ultrasound, antibiotics and allergy tests she's had....for NO REASON. This place may seem great at first but it does not care about your dog. They care about bleeding you dry and giving you ZERO answers along the way. If you ask intelligent questions they get nasty with you. Dr. Babyak in Chandler really left a bad taste in my mouth today with the attitude that it was my fault I didn't know enough to fast my dog. I'm sorry but this is my FIRST dog and I'm not a vet, YOU are!!! To have had ALL those blood works and for my 76 yr old father to be the one to have to figure out why they were coming back elevated is pretty bad. The vet this trip said I was lucky she figured it out!! She totally ignored the fact that my father is the one that said "hey does she need to be fasting" and NOT her. The vet is full of herself and not worth the SIX-SEVEN hours I have wasted sitting in that office (oh yes, be prepared to spend three hours in the Chandler office). After so much wasted time, money and stress I'm so done with this facility. They are okay if you have a crisis or a emergency but forget about this place for anything else unless you want to be put through the system.I'd give them zero stars if I could.I also heard them talking about this situation behind my back which left me feeling not so great. Also, any place that comments negatively or condescending after a customers unhappy review is a place that you should be wary of and by the looks of these reviews it seems as if 1st Pet has a habit of doing that so be forewarned. I've worked in the management business for a while now and this place is only nice to happy customers which begs the question, why have management at all? Read Less

An excellent emergency vet. Although I did have a 4 hour wait, my new foster cats situation wasn't dire. Right off the bat we knew what to expect. The front desk girls let me know when I walked in that we were expecting a 4 hour wait. Fine with me on a Sunday when everyone's closed! They promptly got my foster cat and I a room to stay in until we could be seen. Tech came in and did vitals right off the bat and explained the wait and that there are two critical patients ahead of me which was why the wait was so long. A front desk girl came in with waters and offered me juices or snacks! Vet promptly took care of my baby Frank as soon as she could, quick diagnoses and readily going into surgery. For the 2 hours for surgery they let me leave. They took the rescue owners CC over the phone too! Awesome service, prompt diagnoses, prices for an emergency vet aren't bad either. Very happy. Do not recommend! I took my 4 year old dog in last night for a severe ear infection. Prior to coming in, i called and made an appointment and spoke with Clare regarding pricing. She reassured me that a well exam was not needed, just a cytology that would be about $65 plus whatever medication he would need. I agreed to that. As we were being seen by the nurse tech, she started doing a regular exam, I told her we weren't needing that and she proceeded to tell me that it's against the law for them not to do it so it's mandatory. She then said that they can have the doctor just look at his ear and ASSUME what is wrong and give some type of medication but not positive it would help. WHATT???? okay fast forward to $160 later and the following day, I call and speak with a manager and she tells me, "oh Clare is new so she was just unsure of what she was talking about" ... So that's your excuse for misleading information and being ripped off? And regarding the nurse tech telling me that they could just assume what's wrong, the manager said she didn't believe that she could ever say that. Never did I get any sympathy for how we were treated except for, "you should go read all our reviews and see how happy our customers are" .HORRIBLE!!!! I will never take my dogs there again!! My husband and I took our cat (Batman) to 1st Pet on Christmas Day because he was lethargic and disoriented.  The place was very nice and clean.  Everyone was so nice especially the vet tech who saw Batman, Joey.  He was so kind, knowledgeable and patient with my tiny bundle of terror who was trying to kick and bite him (after he slowly went back to his normal self).  You can just tell that he loved his job.  He gave us so many useful information and told us our options without trying to sell us anything that our cat won't need which we really appreciated.  We were expecting to pay a lot but ended up not costing us anything since Batman was back to normal (probably from the adrenaline from crying the whole car ride) and didn't need to see the vet.  We were so grateful and relieved. Thanks again Joey and 1st Pet staff.  We'll be back again for future pet check ups and visits. I brought my little boy in on a Saturday morning at 5am with breathing problems. He had a heart murmur that was being managed with pills. They gave me a reasonable quote to put him through 24 hours of oxygen therapy but explained that it would only be buying time and that his heart was failing. I opted to put him down peacefully and they were very understanding of the incredibly hard situation I was in. They allowed me to hold him as they put him to sleep. He went out with his dad holding him, avoiding a heart failure when I wasn't home and he'd be all alone. It was an awful experience for me as a pet owner, but I feel like this was the best possible experience for such a tragic moment. A couple days later I received a card with some hand written condolences from the staff. I'll miss him forever, but I am thankful for the staff's professionalism and empathy.Read Less

After experiencing horrible service and being ripped off at Emergency Animal Clinic off of Juniper Rd in Gilbert I swore never to ever go there again. When one of my dogs became ill with the same symptoms as his brother a few years back, I knew I couldn't go there and was thankful I had a Magnet Advertising a 24 hr 1st Pet Veterinary Centers in Mesa. I was expecting the same type of treatment and was pleasantly surprised on the great service and care we received. The front personnel took our dog immediately into the back room after taking short information from us to input in the computer. The place was clean, each room I saw had a pony wall with a half wall aquarium, and very comfortable seating. It had an entire welcoming atmosphere. They immediately accessed my dog to make sure not a life & death emergency while waiting for the vet who was taking care of a dog who was hit by a car. When it was our turn and we explained what was going on and our financial status . . . still paying off a $13,000 medical bill three years back on our other dog, asked if they would try to keep cost down for us to only necessity. (The office visit, one x-ray, urine analysis our bill was $256.00). Since now our dog could drip urine, we felt he was now able to empty part of his bladder and not rupture it, we opt to not have a catheter to empty his bladder or surgery until we could see our vet in the morning. They checked to make sure how much he dribbled and made sure we knew if we had any problems, to feel free to bring him back. They also let us know that if he stopped dribbling to no urine at all, it was an emergency and to get care immediately. The whole time we were there, they would come in and make sure he including ourselves were doing fine and even brought us a basket full of snacks and beverages for our wait. In the morning I took my dog to my vet and brought the paper work with me. To my surprise, they had already faxed the information and it was there waiting for us before 7:30 a.m. Their diagnoses was the same as my vet's second opinion. Before emergency surgery at the other ER in Gilbert, we had spent over $1,000 for diagnoses for our other dog with the same symptoms (bladder stone blocking urine flow). In our case, 1st Pet Veterinary Center was a total better experience and we were never pressured for any tests or procedures. I felt they cared for our dog and us. They also presented estimates before performing any procedure and took time with us to explain what they were for, cost, and outcome. The only negative and it could be because they were being accommodating to only taking one and perhaps my dog moved, my vet's x-ray was sharper quality. The other charges we opt not to have: To empty the bladder would have been $110 for a small dog. The night we were there, they did not have an ultrasound tech and if we needed it for further evaluation for the prostate, they had one at their Chandler office. That cost would have been $125 for the tech and the abdominal ultra sound $339.00. Oh, they are open 24 hours 7 days a week for not only emergencies but for regular pet care service too. Overall I am very satisfied with the care we received and will gladly use them again should we be faced with an after hour emergency again. Read Less

Do not go here. Useless and incompetent. Showed up with my pet with vomiting and wheezing/gurgling. First it took them 5 mins to unlock the door. The first thing they say is it will be 2 hours to see the vet because he is in a procedure. The place is empty, I was the only one there. So the guy says I can take her back to triage and then you can decide if you want to wait for the vet. He takes my cat then returns a couple mins later and says no fever, lungs are clear, she is fine you can go. Seriously?? So I look up the last vet ER I went to for directions, I couldn't quite remember how to get there. 4 other people there yet within 2 mins of getting there they have her in the back assessing her. I was in the room with a vet in less than 10 mins and she was making a plan of action. I told her I wanted a cxr even though she has no fever or wheezing just for my own piece of mind. She looked at me confused and said, she does have a fever and she is wheezing! So fortunately I listened to my instincts and sought further care instead of going home and her getting sicker. This place should not be open or allowed to treat people's animals. Either that or get staff that actually knows what they are doing. Also if you are going to have a large animal ER maybe you should staff accordingly so there is a vet available for people. What if someone brought their pet in and they were critical or hit by a car?? Tell them to drive to another location because the vet isn't available?? Idiots... Read Less

DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET HERE!!My wife and I came to this place with a sick dog who was bitten by a scorpion. Arrived at 2pm. 5pm rolled around yes 5pm and we had still not been seen. 3 hours of time if you are a math genius. Not one time did the staff ask if our pet was ok or needed ice or the amount of time left to be seen or any type of update. We left the establishment without being seen. Yes it was that long that we just gave up. What kind place treats your pet like this? 1st Pet in Mesa does!!! Thank you for wasting 3 hours of my weekend with my family and leaving my dog in pain. Way to go guys. The staff is eating snacks, drinking sodas, listening to music and playing solitare while nothing is going on in the front of the house. No supervision means the people will play! The one happy part of this is by the time 3 hours passed our dog was feeling better. We left without being seen or paying a dime. When I told them we were leaving they didn't even know my dogs name or our name. We were the only ones left in the waiting room. Good lord!!!All of our neighbors have the same number for this place and we will be asking our HOA community to remove their business contact immediately. It has already been removed from the other HOA contact list already this morning so I'm making progress! What cracks me up about the place is the next day they call and ask for contact info about our regular vet. I need to remind them we weren't seen in the first place and we were not seen. Stop making me laugh! If you want to spend half your day here and according to most other reviews an extravagant amount of test fees then this place is for you!The saddest part is people were bringing in their pets to be put asleep and the smiles on the staff's faces after the customers were out of site were painful to see. If you don't care that's fine but respect the family and not snicker behind their back. They are crying. Of course a person is going to cry when they lose a pet.Their website has seven clinicians listed but they must've been on the toilet when we were there. Obviously my review is from an angry perspective. You would be angry too if you saw or experienced this. Save yourself the pain and go to Gilbert Animal Hospital.I sincerely doubt anybody from this business or franchise owner will ever reach out or care about these comments. Just know you affected lives in a negative way and this shouldn't be the goal of your practice. Read Less

Read Less

Read Less

What would have been a 700+ vet bill turned into a less then 200$ vet bill thanks to 1st pet and there insurance. I got 4 medicationsl, exam , 3 vaccines and well as a nail trim and more! Brought my baby in around 12:30 am, staff was nothing short of seriously awesome to both me and my dog.

Staff should be ashamed of themselves! Read Less

When we arrived we were quickly moved to an exam room where technician Linda did an initial assessment and briefed the doctor. Our doctor was very friendly with me and my dog, did a thorough exam and ran necessary tests to diagnose our problem. We were presented with a treatment plan and offer of phone support where needed. Linda helped me to resolve some concerns.and.questions over the following 2 days. We are now successfully managing what may be a Neuro problem until we return home.

Read Less
