My dog's teeth cleaning was done at Red Mountain Animal Hospital. As I went to pick him up, the 1st thing that surprised me was that he wasn't shown to me right away when I asked to see him. He had been there from 7am. (It was 3pm when I picked him up).
When the assistant finally brought in my dog (after going over his treatment), she handed him to me-heavy and cold, as if he was dead.
I asked why he was so heavily sedated (I expected him to be fully awake, as his procedure should have ended awhile ago, and wasn't complicated). She responded that he just needed to sleep it off, and that he was fine.
My dog didn't look fine to me at all (it wasn't his 1st time getting his teeth cleaned), he had trouble breathing, was very cold, and totally loopy, almost unresponsive. He wasn't able to sit or stand up. When I looked at the list of the opioid medications he was given, I was shocked. He was given the strongest meds, such as hydromorphone, ketamine and other drugs- 4 different opioid drugs, to a small 28 pound dog!
As I got home, I was worried about my puppy and called their clinic/doctor, explained what was going on, to which the doctor suggested to bring him in.
As he was examining him, he said that my dog's temperature was 96 degrees-he was hypothermic, and I wondered- how come you let my dog go home in this condition???
He gave my dog a shot of Narcan (a drug that reverses the effect of opioids), and as soon as I left the hospital, my dog felt much better!
I will never go back there! My dog had had his teeth cleaned before, yet I have never seen him in such a bad condition, and I have never seen a small dog get that many drugs.Read Less
