We have been going to East Maryland for more than 8 years. The first dog we took there had lots of complex medical issues and Dr. Wendy Schroeder helped us navigate through them, referring us to specialty vets when needed. We are now seeing Dr. Schroeder with a 4-year-old dog who is far healthier but the level of commitment and quality of care remains at the same high level. One of the best recommendations, though, comes from both past and present dogs, who walk into East Maryland with tails wagging and are happy to see Dr. Schroeder. Read Less

They are caring and devoted to all the pets and their families. Haley our practice manager works hard to keep us on tract paying the bills and all that unfortunate money stuff while still having a kind soft spot for all the fuurry kids. My techs are top notch. They work extremely hard for 3 demanding doctors. Somehow they artfully balance between caring for the pets, the pet parents, the time demands, and their own sanity. Our puppy was having a bit of pain after stumbling up a step and we wanted to make sure it wasn't serious. Our vet, Dr. Clemmons, recommended unnecessary testing for a fungal infection that our puppy *didn't even have any symptoms of.* She also convinced us to get an x-ray and radiology report thinking that the pain from the area she hurt was actually back pain, shared the results of said report by adding a very extreme interpretation that *wasn't in the report,* and told us that our 1-year-old puppy would need permanent pain management, daily doses of NSAIDs, and annual blood tests, and to stop all activity such as running, jumping, and playing (basically anything other than walking) for a condition that ended up *resolving on its own within 24 hours* before the vet even had the chance to write a prescription for Metacam. Talk about overreacting.
I wrote this review on other sites and EMAH responded by inaccurately stating that the vet simply "added the radiologist's recommendations into her treatment plan." This is just not the case. They also attributed my puppy's improvement to NSAIDs--even though she improved *before taking it* while we were waiting for the prescription.
At least they are consistent--they hear what they want to hear and say what they want to say, regardless of facts. It's sad because the first vet we saw at EMAH seemed good.
If you MUST go to EMAH, please cross-reference any recommendations or diagnoses (aka scare tactics) against industry best practices. Remember that animals, like humans, are strong and robust and their bodies are inherently adaptable before making drastic changes in response to extreme interpretations of tests. Getting a second opinion from another veterinarian if something seems off is always a good idea and ESPECIALLY so with EMAH. It's always a good idea to advocate for your own pet--the veterinarian we saw at EMAH certainly didn't. Read Less

Aside from being overpriced, and recommending unnecessary and overpriced tests (even when the animal doesn't show *any* symptoms) to "rule things out", these vets also interpret radiology reports *very* differently than how the radiologist did (yes, I asked for a copy). They are really quick to recommend really unnecessary measures (such as *daily* pain medication and annual blood tests for a puppy...for something that ended up resolving itself within two days). They also are very inconsistent--one vet told us our dog had to lose 4 to 5 pounds (after giving her three or four treats, without even asking if she could), and then after she lost 1 lb., the same vet said her weight was perfect (just moments after the vet tech said she had to lose 2 more lbs.) They just really don't know what they're doing. I'd really recommend finding a better vet, because if East Maryland Animal Hospital is your go-to, you're better off not going in at all.Read Less

I am a long time friend of E Maryland Hospital... On my third dog life with them... I find the vets knowledgeable and compassionate. ...available for emergencies and wellness visits alike. Never adverse to recommending a specialist if needed The staff is so caring and concerned for their animal patients, as well as the mommies and daddies of each. My little Cavalier is treated like a King. Believe me, he deserves it too. The staff of the waiting room are all animal lovers and kind individuals, always greeting me with a smile and personal recognition. The boarding is beyond the norm. Special patience and love is given to each dog, cat, bird etc. Especially if your little guy is a finicky eater. I highly recommend East Maryland Animal Hospital.Read Less

I absolutely LOVE all the staff and E. Maryland Animal Hospital! From the time The Bear & I walk in we are both greeted by name. I know all the front staff & they are so caring, friendly and personable. They treat each pet as if they were there own. When my little baby, Bow Tie had to be put to sleep, Dr. Schroeder showed so much compassion & empathy. In addition, the sympathy card that was sent after Bow was to Crazy Kitty Heaven made my day. All my pets, at one time or another, have seen every Veterinarian at E. Maryland. Currently, Dr. Ann is our Vet. & she is truly fantastic. I would never consider taking my big guy, The Bear any were else. Truly, K. LindemoenRead Less

Dr. Martens is excellent. She reviewed Bailey's cardiology report before she came in the room and immediately commented that he is doing well. She was attentive to both Abby and Bailey as well as me. She answered my questions and addressed my concerns even though she said "Abby's Fat" :) The next time Fat Abby is in, she will be Svelte Abby!
