More than what you'd expect from a veterinary clinic, this place can handle exotics like reptiles, plus standard services; surgery, teeth cleaning, vaccinations and medications, health consultations, etc. The staff is pleasant and professional. I have had all of my dogs treated here, along with two euthanasia, unfortunately. These were handled with care and respect. To say they have earned my loyalty would be an understatement. The only service I have seen that they do not provide is a 24 hour emergency facility. Read Less

Took my dog there and all was fine. A week later everything was good with him but one thing remained which the doctor overlooked. Only to tell me over the phone that the other medication for something else was supposed to take care of it. Which is contradicting because in the visit she clearly said they were 2 different conditions (needing 2 different medications). I mention this point over the phone only to be replied with "well without running tests we cant be certain of anything". See the inconsistency there? On top of it all, the true reason for 1 star, Dr. Gordon sensed a slight bit of annoyance on my part over the phone yet I remained polite and respectful, and instead of address it like any professional would, she decided to hang up on me. I'm sure most people have great experiences there. Unfortunately I did not. I wasnt even given a simple apology. Just excuses. (Worth mentioning: during the call the dr was excessively talking and explaining herself, I had to cut her off just to speak. Does someone who isn't in the wrong really need to explain themselves THAT much?) Read Less

There's not a whole lot of depth I can really go into here, but if you live in Marana/Oro Valley and own a bird, Orange Grove is going to be the closest avian vet you can find.  They are a tiny bit pricier than the other avian vet a bit further out of the way, but not so much that it makes the extra drive worth it.  All the staff are friendly.  Dr. Merker was kind and thorough in examining our new addition, a young green cheek conure.  He got his wings, nails, and beak trimmed up and gave me some recommendations on diet and future care. They were very up front on pricing so you know what to expect, and gave me a high-low estimate for possible future DNA sexing so we are aware of any future issues that should arise if it turns out that our "he" bird is actually a "she" bird.  That's about all I can say, we were in and out.  They do offer boarding for birds as well, pricing seems reasonable as long as you bring your own cage and food.  May cost extra if you don't. I have nothing but good things to say about Orange Grove Animal Hospital, and in particular, Dr. Merker. He has treated all my pets with kindness and concern. He's never failed to treat my pets successfully, and with the utmost professionalism. I've lived in Tucson for many years, and have seen other animal hospitals, none can compare with Orange Grove. Their facility is clean, their staff is caring and professional, and I would never take any animal of mine to anyone else because our pets are a part of our family, and deserve the very best in veterinary care. When we had to put our beloved, seventeen year old dalmatian down, Dr. Merker came to our home and couldn't have been more sympathetic and kind, making sure our "Augie" was as comfortable as possible. It was very evident that he cared. Dr. Merker is a wonderful doctor, and our pets and our family love him for the care he gives to them. "Thank you", Orange Grove Animal Hospital, Staff, Office Manager, Dennis, and in particular, our Dr. Merker. Our pets are in excellent hands with you, and we appreciate all that you do to treat, comfort, and make a difference in keeping our little furry family members in the very best of health. The only reason why they don't get a 1-star rating is because they did well with our pets for years. But recently they royally screwed up. We brought in our cat three times in the course of a year to get checked out for weight loss and poor digestion. The vet started her on special food, ran some blood tests, and that was it. Finally as the cat's condition got to be critical we tried another vet. Turns out the condition our cat has is treatable. Took the new vet 90 seconds to make a diagnosis. 90 seconds! Thing is, it might be too late. Our cat lost half her body weight and is so frail she can't walk straight. If the treatment began back when we first noticed the problem, she'd probably be ok now. If the diagnosis was really complicated we'd understand how the vet at Orange Grove missed it. No one is perfect. But this condition is not uncommon, especially in older cats like ours. We gave him three tries and he struck out. Thing is, it's the cat that pays for it. UPDATE - The cat passed away. The diagnosis from the new vet came too late to reverse the damage already done. Now Orange Grove is sending us "happy birthday" emails for the cat, like rubbing salt in the wound. We told them the cat passed away. This is just so unprofessional and careless, I can't even put into words how angry and disappointed we are. Read Less

We have been bringing our pets to Orange Grove Animal Hospital since 2007.  We now have had two dogs and one cat cared for through them.  Dogs - I highly recommend Dr. Jarchow and his vet tech.  They are highly competent, kind, listen well, and show genuine care toward my dogs.  Even my puppy Doberman, jumping all over the vet, just elicits laughs and more petting for her.  He has been very helpful in caring for my now-senior dog, suggesting vitamins and relieving my anxiety and her slowing-down self.Cats - Dr. Jarchow is still a winner with cats, in my book, but I also think Dr. Merker is great.  My senior cat has some food allergies, and they were able to run appropriate tests to figure it out.  Testing is expensive, but I suppose it's that way anywhere.Boarding - Here is where I'll draw the line.  For boarding my cat, I would recommend it.  While a small room for the cats, they have a sizable cage area to be in and get out every day while it is cleaned.  I would NOT recommend it for dogs.  Dog runs are all indoors, with no outdoor component.  Someone takes them out twice a day.  TWICE.  That's it.  The room is all cement/block wall/chain link fence, and it just multiplies anxiety tenfold because it all echoes and the dogs are on top of each other.  They once tried to put my 60-pound Shepherd mix in a CAT CAGE.  Seriously?  I don't think so.We still bring our pets here for their care, but we take them elsewhere for boarding.  This is why I rated it four stars instead of five.  The front office staff has gotten better over the years, so now I don't fear the scary lady that answers phones when I call! I have been going to Dr. Walter Merker for several months now for all serious health issues in my guinea pigs. He is an excellent exotics vet. He worked at a busy exotics practice prior to joining Orange Grove and that translates to experience seeing guinea pigs (something hard to find). The cases I have brought to him have all been fairly difficult and he has met them all with excellent critical thinking, diagnostic skills and good brain storming for solutions. He has done an outstanding job with my guinea pigs and I'm very happy we found him. The practice is a good distance from my home but its well worth the trip to see a vet who can act from knowledge and experience with guinea pigs. Dr. Merker is also highly professional and kind in his demeanor. Every experience with him (and we've had over a dozen now) has been very positive and I give my highest recommendation.Read Less

I called this animal hospital third, and was able to schedule an appointment immediately (even around Thanksgiving). This was the only place in town that had available spots. I was extremely impressed - everyone was very friendly and helpful. The avian vet was extremely knowledgeable and gave me helpful literature to take better care of my pet and talked me through dietary and behavioral habits. He also explained his findings related to my concerns and didn't run any unnecessary (and expensive) tests without explaining the pros and cons of doing so. I've had this problem in the past with other animal hospitals in town that run every test for no reason. I'm very happy with Orange grove animal hospital. My frilled dragon Bowser was seen by Dr. Jarchow when I first got him. He is in the pictures up on their page. He struggled with not being able to open his eyes and see. Bowser had been seen by 4 vets and all worked together to help him get his eyes back. I was last told by a eye care doctor that its going to be a long battle till his eyes clear up or even clear up at all. It's been well over a year ,I think closer to two and his eyes have made improvements. He can actually open his eyes now and see. There is still some room for them to improve but overall I'm pleased with this hospital. They have seen other reptiles of mine and every time they have helped tremendously. The staff is friendly and very smart. They are my go to clinic for my reptiles. I just had the absolute worst experience I've ever had in 10 years of owning pets with Dr. Lopez at this place!! I would give zero stars if I could. I've been bringing both of my pets here for their yearly exams for a couple of years now. The wait is always long, and they're overpriced compared to other places I've been, but its close to home and so convenience won out until now. Until today, I would have given them 3 stars (certainly not a 4 or 5 star place), but I'd also never seen this particular vet before.I had to bring my dog in today for some shots. He just had a full exam in November, and so from the beginning I mentioned to them that he didn't need a full exam today. He's a young, healthy dog. Heck, I don't even see the doctor that frequently! They weighed him and took his temperature anyway, and then left me in a waiting room for 25min (in addition to the 15 that I'd already waited in the lobby). Finally the vet came in and when she started to examine him, I said verbatim "We were hoping to just pay for the shots today. He had a full exam 6 months ago." She verified that on his chart and then stopped examining him, so I assumed that we'd reached an understanding. She gave him his shots and was in the room for a total of maybe 3min. Then I went out into the waiting room and approached the desk to pay, but they said they'd have to locate his chart with the charges. I had to ask again after 10min whether they'd found it - I was the only one in the waiting room, but I think they would have happily let me wait another 5min or more before bothering to call me up. When I heard the charge, it seemed high so I asked "just for the shots, right?"  Turns out they were charging me for a $45 office visit as well. I assumed this was a mistake, since I'd mentioned that we didn't need one to both the tech and the vet, so the receptionist went back to check. We went through several iterations of this going in and talking to someone then coming out and telling me no, and I became increasingly confounded. Neither the vet nor the tech ever came out to speak to me personally. Turns out that when I made that comment to the vet, she was being passive aggressive. Rather than responding to my request directly, she ignored it and left it for her receptionist to deal with. I don't have a problem with a vet refusing to see a pet without a full exam per se (although I've never been anywhere else with a policy like that). My problem is that she ignored my comment and then didn't do a full exam, knowing full well that she was going to charge me for it. Seriously infuriating and disrespectful. I should have insisted that we go back in and they do a real exam, but I was too angry.I asked them to copy the chart for both of my pets, paid the ridiculous fee, and left. We will never go back there. Terrible passive aggressive vet (Lopez), ridiculously long wait, mediocre care, and disrespectful to customers!! Read Less

They were "okay," but I don't plan on taking my dog(s) back here for treatment. We were referred here by my father-in-law who had a retired Air Guard friend who supposedly worked here as a vet. He must no longer work here because there was no one there by that name. However, our dog needed to be seen and so we took it anyways. We live over by Houghton & Bilby so this was quite a drive. They told us the dog is diabetic (after we suggested maybe she had that after extensive Googling on our end). Okay, so we were expecting an expense, but not as much as they wanted. I felt as if they saw dollar signs as soon as they saw us and we are NOT made of money. After reviewing the bill for treatment they suggested it came down to, can we pay this or make a car payment this month?Don't get me wrong, we love our pets, but we wanted to shop around for other treatment (we'd done this in a different state last year where we got the dog and found out it had a medical problem and it wasn't an issue). These people told us follow up appointments (which they suggested to come in the next day, in five days and then again a month later and again every 6 months or so) would be one price and then when we spoke to the people at the desk, it was double that. We cannot afford that for what we'd be going in for each time (a blood glucose test which we were told by another vet's office we can do ourselves and Googling yet again proved this 2nd office correct).I think it's because of the side of town we took the dog for treatment (Northwest), but we won't be back here. We have a 2nd opinion appointment scheduled at an office just down the road and hopefully it goes well. They've already told us the prices we were quoted at this Orange Grove office aren't necessary and aren't how this new office plans on doing things. These people are nice, but I didn't get the vibe I got at our dog's last vets (they both have had different vets over the years with all our military moving around). The doctor, while friendly, was kind of over the top and I got the impression he was trying to scare us. Just the impression we got. Also, they don't do a military discount, which for what we wound up paying would have helped us out considerably. Also, we both grew up on the NW side of Tucson and probably passed this place a thousand times, but we'd never have known it since their sign is very hard to read and we missed it on the way there and had to turn around. So, be on the look-out if you're on the way there so you don't miss it like we did. Read Less

I went here about 4 times to treat my small pets, guinea pigs. So this review is only about guinea pigs (and possibly other small animals). They were very caring here toward my little ones. They were kind, respectful, and sweet. The vets seemed to understand guinea pigs and how delicate they are and spooked, so that was appreciated. They looked all over my piggies when I brought them in, asked questions, explored, poked, listened etc. to try and diagnose. Guinea pigs are difficult to figure out so they do their best. They were able to help treat them and did good jobs finding medicine and showing me how to administer the meds. When one of my pigs died after treatment, they sent me a card. I think they do care here. Read Less

Merker.

I have never had to take my furry friends in because I work at another hospital that works only with cats and dogs on an emergency basis and when we get Orange grove clients in they always seem very pleased and I have reffered many clients to them for their outstanding service!!!

Read Less

I adopted my girl Faith from the pound last year. When they release you with your new family member, they give you a list of places they suggest taking your new pet to for a check up. This was one of the places. I took Miss Faith here a year ago for her new pooch check-up and I was impressed, but it was my first vet check so I didn't rate it. Now, after check two, as well as shots, AND...after falling madly in LOVE, I was more in tuned with how people treat my little girl. I was so impressed! This place is awesome! And even better...I can tell they LOVE my pooch as much as we do!! The care they took knowing she had previously been beaten and is extremely shy, was impressive. I was so grateful to know that the staff and Dr.'s here really seem to care for our animals as much as we do.As for the price, I have nothing to compare it to. Faith got 2 shots, Parvo, Distemper and Rabies, as well as a check-up and it cost me $85.

Read Less
