Southern Arizona Veterinary Specialty And Emergency Center

Tucson, Arizona
General Info
When Tucson pet owners notice subtle shifts in their pets' energy levels, appetites, or postures they seek help from Southern Arizona Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center which delivers customized care routines trusted across Arizona. During initial consultations the clinic team examines essential behavioral patterns including rest time, food drive, toy interest, social responsiveness and body language. The examination process involves the team assessing joint mobility alongside coat condition while checking ear sensitivity and muscle tension as well as hydration levels with gum health and eye clarity. A holistic perspective transforms initial indicators like avoidance of physical contact and stair climbing reluctance into actionable insights for long-term planning. The Southern Arizona Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center provides options for wellness scheduling alongside preventive screenings and bloodwork while also delivering dental reviews and orthopedic care combined with behavior-informed treatment paths. The system modifies recommendations according to lifestyle contexts such as living in an apartment versus a house. yard space, solo pets vs. households with multiple pets or busy travel itineraries. The team modifies care rhythm based on the pet’s temperament, attention span, and home pacing instead of implementing a rigid plan. Throughout extended periods the clinic develops detailed profiles for each pet's behavior and baseline health while refining recommendations based on family priorities. The observation of fluctuating energy levels along with sound reactivity and appetite shifts enables caregivers to deliver support that maintains both effectiveness and emotional sensitivity. Southern Arizona Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center assists Tucson families and nearby Arizona communities in creating veterinary routines that respect both lifestyle and pet psychology which makes every visit more useful calm and grounded.

I had to take my Golden Retriever in the middle of the night because I thought he had been bitten by a rattler while camping. (He was bitten by something, and was having reactions, but we didn't know what it was.) They were professional and thorough, and explained what to expect along with prices as we went along with diagnosis and treatment. It turns out my dog is okay, thank goodness. I felt comfortable in their hands in the middle of this emergency. Read Less

I live out of town about 1.5 hours, I called to get advice as to how to care for my dogs hind paw which was bleeding, not sure if due to a broken nail or if the nail itself is falling off. As I was explaining to the male who answered why I was calling, he very rudely cut me off and said "okay so what is the issue?". If he hadn't cut me off then he would know!! He proceeded to cut me off again and then said "just wait I'm going to tet you to the tech.." I explained the issue and reason for my call to her and she wasn't as rude but not much better, "you can wrap the paw if you want and if it helps then it helps, if it doesn't then it doesn't..." Wow. If they had heard me out the first time and let me finish what I had to say they would've known I only needed over the phone advice. Improving customer service skills is highly needed at this facility. Period. Read Less

Southern Arizona Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center is amazing. We came in at 1am with a dog that had severe oleander poisoning. They immediately got to work on him and working with ASPCA Poison Control to stabilize him. The emergency doctors, nurses, and staff were amazing in helping our dog and us through this awful situation. We received updates on our dog's status regularly from each doctor for each new shift. We were able to visit our dog as often as we wanted and for as long as our dog was able to take our petting and cuddles. Thanks to this amazing place, our dog made it through the most severe oleander poisoning they have ever seen. We are eternally grateful for everything they did. Read Less

BE VERY CAREFUL We brought our 14-year-old kitty in around midnight recently. She was struggling to breath. She of course became very anxious with the vet which made it worse. They tried to remove fluid from her lungs/abdomen. She fought them, and it seemed they gave up on her. The doctor said she was in distress and suffering, and suggested we put her to sleep. She wasn't sure but thought heart disease might have caused fluids. No blood work completed; no antibiotics; no diuretics...and made sure we paid the $800 up front to revive her. We were so distraught; worried she was suffering and not thinking well, we agreed to put her to sleep. I look back now, and I am just angry as we trusted them, and they really did not do everything in their power to save her/heal her. Read Less

Brought our dog in with a high concern of her health, was super wobbly , couldn’t keep her self up and just super dazed and weak. wasn’t impressed at all with staff. The only reason why we went here was because it was the closest emergency clinic to us. The staff was rude and non caring. They told us the wait was going to be an hour and half before we could be seen by a doctor and the tech told us “ you have to understand that we are an emergency and that there are more serious cases and other animals that are needing more treatment at the time “. We felt like our dogs health wasn’t as important to them. And then told us to hang on to our dog because “ she needs to write” when our dog was wobbling and fell forward. Not coming here again, very disappointed. Read Less

If you are like me, your pet is not only your family but your child.  I see some of the less than stellar reviews and am quite surprised but then not given how emotional I am about my own fur baby.  The experience had here, at this location was positive.  My regular vet had referred me to Dr. Klien, during a series of two different types of tumor issues with my 9.5 year old pup.  She implored me to make an appointment, given Dr. Klien is very difficult to get in to see -- as the wait can be 4-6 weeks.  I took her advice and made the appointment, even though we were not quite sure what was going on at the time.Fast forward past an ultrasound, 2 separate surgeries -- one incredibly invasive -- and lots of unknown.  I am so glad that I made this appointment.  I found the offices to be clean, the staff incredibly kind and caring.  To me, it was obvious they love animals here.  In my particular case, my goal of seeing Dr. Klien was to give me a rundown in expert layman's terms everything that had been going on with my dog -- mostly the pathology interpretations of her cancer and what that meant to my dog and her future.  The news I received was terminal, and not what I had hoped for BUT what I appreciated most was Dr. Klien's genuine focus on the quality of life for the animal.  She gave me all the options possible with my case, with all the details of pros/cons and ultimately shared what I knew in my heart which was to just enjoy the time we have left.  I appreciated her candor and her sensitivity in delivering these types of messages.  I felt the price I paid for the visit was fair, to get this type of expert information and insight.  She did let me know that once you are established and have that initial appointment that the re-check appointments are far more easy and quick to get into.  I am guessing she has a lot of furry loved ones that she treats in Tucson. If you are needing an animal oncologist -- they hype is real, Dr. Klien is the real deal and there is a reason she is well respected by her peers and recommended. The one-star rating is not for the facility, but rather for the Veterinarian, Dr. Bondy.  Unfortunately, it is very hard to find information on specific doctors, especially for gastrointestinal problems. Thus I am making sure I review Dr. Bondy.   I picked Dr. Bondy because in his bio it was written that he had a special interest in GI issues.  When my regular vet suggested he do an endoscopy on my dog (at up to $2900) I thought it might be best to have a specialist do this procedure.  After all, I'd go to a specialist for something like this.  My expectation of this consultation ($98) was that I would get a second opinion on doing the procedure, as well as an idea of possible outcomes and treatments.  I succeeded in the former, but not in the latter.  Dr. Bondy manner was hyperactive, rapidly asking a few questions without hardly waiting for the answer.  He did not seem to connect to anything I would say.  He recommended doing a blood test first to rule out Addison's disease.  When I said I had some questions, he was abrupt, looked at his watch and said he had 5 minutes.  Not what I'd expect from someone wanting you to spend almost $4000 for both an endoscopy and colonoscopy for your dog.  Due to the complexities of GI diseases, I understand the need for tests. I would think and expect that a doctor could/would be willing to provide more information about the possible outcomes and what is involved in the "management" of the disease.  How can one make an informed decision?  Without this,  a pet owner can't feel confident in going forward.  I tried to explain that I couldn't just automatically go forward and I had to consider not treating my pet.  I had to weigh the costs and benefits.  He didn't seem to look at it from my point of view.   I decided to leave my dog for the Addison's test.  When I returned I asked to speak to the office manager.  I told her that I felt I was not given time for questions which makes it hard to make a decision.  She seemed to understand, but said I would probably have to pay for another consultation!  Sorry, this just doesn't seem ethical to me. I wouldn't be going in for a different issue. When I returned he came out to talk to me and gushed about what a wonderful Basset Frankie is, alluding to hoping I would opt to spend the money.  He was fidgeting and making weird gestures.  I'm sure he is knowledgeable, but his odd and arrogant manner does not inspire confidence.  If do end up spending a lot of money, this is the last person I'd give my hard earned money to.  Refusing to give people enough information to make a good decision and being arrogant to think that is acceptable should not be rewarded with my business.  I do understand that there are many possible outcomes, but I will not accept that I cannot be given a rough idea of what a pet owner of a dog with these issues will face-- what are the types of treatments? How expensive are they? Give me some scenarios, please.  Otherwise, you end up feeling you are being led down a garden path, racking up thousands of dollars in debt.  Is this what owning a pet has come to?  I know when someone is not being up front with me.  When you have to pay more money just to get enough information to make a wise decision, then you know something is wrong.  I would never work for a practice like this and I feel sorry for the people who do. I'm traveling and needed a vet for my 4.8 pound chihuahua Lola who has not pooped in days. She also seemed to be dehydrated.   I went in at about 11 last night and thank goodness I was the only one there so the wait wasn't too long. The vet tech who met me at the door asked all the right questions. She knew her stuff. Then we had a visit with the doc.  Plan of action was to give her fluids and see if that helps. Plus no more people food!!!!   Got it!! Not sure Lola does however.  The place was clean and the cost to come in was $88.  Now my 24 hour vet in Denver costs $118 to walk in so I thought it wasn't bad. I read the reviews before I went. Most of the lower reviews had to do with cost and visitors not able or willing to pay for treatment. That isn't the fault of the vets office. That's the animals parents problem.   If you can't take care of an animal you shouldn't have one.  In my mind they are our children who depend on us for everything, including healthcare.  Enough said. I had a great experience taking my dog to the Ft. Lowell location of the Southern Arizona Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center. My dog had eaten an oatmeal raisin cookie the pervious night and after exhibiting some symptoms the next day, the Animal Poison Control Center recommended I take him to an emergency vet immediately. My primary vet recommended Southern Arizona Veterinary. Upon arrival, the receptionist was very friendly and after filling out some paperwork, I was seen immediately by a vet technician. I had a few minute wait to see the vet while she reviewed my case with the Animal Poison Control Center. While raisins can cause kidney failure in dogs, the vet was very calm as she explained the situation, helping me to keep calm. The vet recommended blood work to catch possible kidney failure. They have a lab on sight, so they completed the blood work and had the results in 15 minutes. I told the vet that my dog has anxiety when kept in a crate and will lick his paws (which can cause infection), so he should only be kept in a crate with a cone. Turns out, while waiting for the lab results they never put him in a crate - they just kept him on a leash with them! They thoroughly went over the results and discharge care, and answered all my questions. Everything looked normal! However, they said if he exhibits any more symptoms within the next 24hrs, I can bring him back and it will be covered under the initial examination fee.The receptionist, technician, and vet were all very kind and worked well with my dog, who is not crazy about vets. If you have a pet emergency, I would highly recommend this vet. Read Less

Yessica the medical assistant was very patient with me and my mom and super friendly!!! She made this place a world class experience for me and my family and I know my dog Maggie is in good hands. They called in an anesthesiologist who was willing to do the surgery tonight!!! Amazing staff and glad they take their time with us and my family furbaby. Being in the medical field this means a lot to me. They are doing labs and making sure all is okay with her Cushings. Feeding her after checking with the anesthesiologist to make sure okay. And giving us plenty of contact numbers and information should we have any questions. Also. They may have to suture her eye while she heals. So they wanted to let us know we can bring her in after if this eye needs to be cleaned. Amazing staff!!! They care about your pets!!!!!!Update: Maggie did great with her surgery and medications were given to me as well as her ability to see Dr. Bailey (internist) during her emergency room visit stay and they even felt bad for the prices on this and adjusted her costs to benefit me! Thank you so much! Dr. Bailey called in a prescription for compounding and they will ship to me in 5 days so I don't run out!!! amazing service. I encourage every pet owner to take their pet here!!!! Yet another "veterinarian" who is only here to take your money.  My cat has a large tumor that was detected by his regular vet.  I called the Southern Arizona Veterinary Center because my vet referred me to Dr. Klein.  I called and found out that Dr. Klein is not available for a month, but the receptionist would be happy to make an appointment for me to bring my cat in for surgery.  Who makes an appointment for surgery without the surgeon even looking at the cat or having any information about the cat's problem?  She tells me Dr. Klein is the only doctor in Tucson who will treat cancer, but she won't do surgery.  Dr. Klein will not look at the cat's x-rays or test results to even do an initial assessment as to whether or not she can help my cat.  I am told that my vet can call Dr. Klein for more information.  My vet calls Dr. Klein, and Dr. Klein says that if I want my cat to be seen sooner at Southern Arizona Veterinary Specialty Center, then I should make an appointment with one of their regular veterinarians.  He has been seeing a regular veterinarian for months!  I am calling this "specialist" now because the regular vet can't handle this.  These folks are obviously just trying to extract money from people. This is one of those places that you hope you don't have to use (talking about emergencies, not the specialists), but glad to have them when you need them.  And up front, they are not cheap.  No one is, especially in the middle of the night.  But, I have never found them to be anything less than upfront for their services, accurate price estimates, professional, and willing to listen to my preferences for my animals.Once again, I found myself needing them this week.  This was not like previous times where it was an emergency or a situation that couldn't wait until my vet opened.  One of my young, healthy dogs died suddenly in the middle of the night.  I needed to to her to where I knew I could count on a thorough necropsy, and to have ashes returned to me.  Aside from the person answering the phone having the empathy of a potato (and yes, I was crying so I'm sure it was hard to understand me - but a simple "this must be really difficult for you" type comment could have worked wonders).  The techs were, as in my previous experiences, phenomenal.  I didn't speak directly with the vet this go around, but they have always been great in the past, and they did send feedback via the techs very quickly on a question I presented to them that evening.  I've also visited their specialists in the past for health testing for the dogs, and I've been impressed with them as well. I have used this hospital for 2 of my dogs. Once, about 10 years ago, my lab that ingested a LOT of raw cookie dough. The second was our Dachshund, she was attacked in our fenced in back yard. Both times the staff were courteous and very caring, taking their time to evaluate both dogs and making sure to cover all the options. In the case of our Dachshund, we were concerned it could have been a snake bite so we called the hospital on Ft. Lowell and they called the Broadway hospital to let them know we were bringing our dog in. When we arrived the vet tech met us and immediately took our dog back to the vet for an evaluation  Fortunately, it was not a snake bite and an hour later we were on our way home with antibiotics with plans to follow up with our primary vet the next day. Our 6 week old puppy needed surgery for an inguinal hernia. So we took her here after the first place we went said they could do it but truned out they didn't know how to. The nurse Heather and the vet dr singer worked as hard as they could to help us with keeping the cost low. I took her in at 9am on the 3rd and they had her ready to go home by 3pm. They are very caring and explain everything in detail. Would definitely bring my dog's back here. Read Less

Took a sick dog in. They had her for 20 hours and didn't do anything beyond what my own vet had done. We needed tests run to figure out why she was so sick. Their response, "We were busy." In 20 hours, they didn't have time to run tests and figure out what was causing her illness. . . . sounded like a scam to get more money because they would have to keep her another 24 hours to run the tests. I checked my dog out and drove to Phoenix to a true emergency clinic who took us seriously and diagnosed a very serious, life-threatening illness. While she was in Southern Arizona VSEC, I would call to check on her. They would tell me, "Oh, she got kisses from all the techs coming in." "She likes going for walks." They couldn't tell me what tests had been run, how she was doing, or any results. "Oh, we don't know that. We just work up front." Not what I expect from an emergency clinic that I'm trusting with my dog's life. Read Less

Great and efficient emergency care for a head wound on my greyhound.  The staff was very caring and understanding.  I walked into their clinic after I had spent over an hour sitting in another emergency exam room...the only patient there.  I left frustrated and panicked since my dog was in need of attention.  I walked into this clinic and my pup was seen within minutes.  The vet was very knowledgeable about the breed and their sensitivity to sedation.   I was immediately relieved knowing we were in great hands. Many thanks to the staff!! Thank you S. AZ Vet Specialty and Emergency for saving our dogs life. I understand that other reviewers are upset about the upfront cost of services, but the quality care our dog received was totally worth it. We went in not knowing what was wrong with our dog but she was diagnosed very quickly and underwent successful emergency surgery. If not for the talented surgeon and compassionate care from the vet techs, she'd likely be gone now. It is always sad when your pet doesn't make it but these guys are going to do their best. To us the slim chance of our dog making it through was worth the upfront cost.Read Less

I'm not even sure where to begin when it comes to reviewing the incredible staff and fantastic care that my animals have received here. It's never a good night when you and your beloved pet find yourselves on the way to the emergency vet, but SAVS has always been able to put my mind at ease, ensure that my pets are well taken care of, and in a way that is actually manageable for me. My first experience with them was about 8 or 9 months ago when my Mastiff Tawny developed a large abscess on her neck that caused her face and neck to swell up and she could not breath well. It was after midnight, so this place was our only option. I did have to pay a $75 emergency checkup fee up front. After the doctor looked her over, figured out what the problem was, we waited a few minutes for them to return with an estimate. They decided that a small surgery was necessary to drain the abscess and drains should be put in. We were expecting it to be a lot of money, because it is an emergency vet, and it was. We upfront told them that we can not afford it. They came back with a second estimate, doing their absolute best to cut the costs, and it was significantly better, but still outside of our budget. The doctor returned as they could see we were not ready to let go of our pet just because we couldn't afford her care, which would have been heartbreaking. The doctor offered, at no cost, to drain as much off of the abscess as she could with a needle and syringe and that should hold us over until the morning where we could see our normal vet for a (most likely) cheaper price. We were extremely appreciative of their help, and we did wind up getting it taken care of the following day for less.A few months later, our cat Tyrion came down with an abscess of his own between his shoulder blades, and it was again late at night. We turned again to SAVS to help us. Tyrion was in bad shape, he had not been eating, was limp and barely conscious, very much not himself. They saw this immediately, and rushed him to a back room. The doctor saw him immediately. We went through roughly the same process as before, but this time they were insistent that surgery had to happen tonight. He had to stay the night in recovery. First estimate was very high, second was significantly better, but still too high. Third was stripped down as much as they could, really the absolute bare minimum they could do and removing all fees and extras. It was doable. We signed off, and then the doc came back, and explained that she would feel more comfortable giving him better care than what we could afford, and that they would just take care of it. It was more important to them that the surgery be done right than to line their pockets and my wife and I could not have been more appreciative again. Everything went smoothly and we had our little boy back to normal within a week. One week ago, we were heartbroken to find that our mastiff had passed while I was at work. She was 12, a good bit beyond her life expectancy, and we had been having talks about what we would do when she was gone. We simply did not know. We had at one point looked into cremation, but very few places around town would accept a dog of her size, and those that would were exorbitantly priced. Several hundred dollars at minimum. Now the day was upon us and we had no idea how to handle it. On a chance, I called SAVS because I knew they would be open--maybe they had some advice? The lady on the phone, before I even stated my name, knew from the fact that I mentioned my mastiff who she was. She said, "Oh no! Is this Tawny?" "Yes," I said. "I'm so sorry, she was such a sweet girl."Yes, she was. That level of care and personal service is something that is not easy to find anymore. It was so touching to know that someone else there was sharing our loss with us. That our sweet dog had made an impact on someone else out there too. She informed us that they could have her cremated for us for $100 if we do not keep the ashes, and $165 if we did. We chose the latter. We wrapped her in a blanket and headed over. Upon arrival, the lady offered to have a paw print made in clay for free as part of the service. We thought that would be nice. After taking care of the paperwork, we went to their back door and they came out with a gurney, placed her gently on it, and then wheeled her off after we had a chance to say a final goodbye.I can not express how appreciative I am of this place and the people who work there. They have made so many tough times so much easier for us, and truly helped my pets as if they were their own. Thank you, SAVS, for everything you have done, are doing, and will do for the family members out there who are just a little more furry than the rest of us. Read Less

I came home one day from work and my dog was acting too strange to ignore. So, I brought him here. They seemed to take my worries and concerns very seriously and I was seen with in a half hour of arriving. To make a long story short, my dog Bernie,  somehow the his back out and needed to be put on medicine. We did an xray, pain management,  anti inflammatory pills, and a shot all for around $410. Bernie is doing better and I think the vet and the employees at this place. They took care of Bernie and handled him with care and compassion. On top of that, they are 24 hours, so I feel good that if Bernie ever needs them, I can get him help as soon as possible. The reason I have 4 stars: I called 24 hours later to get the xray results (they told me they'd have them within 4 hours). I was on hold for a total of an hour which was f**king ridiculous. The first time I called, I was hung up on and then the next 4 times I called I was put on hold for 15-20 minutes at a time. It was infuriating. I think they just need to work on their phone situation on the night shift. Read Less

I went in to have my dog looked at because his eye was swollen shut. He was treated for an abscess in his mouth; we were given medication to give him and told to contact them if there were any problems. I called the following afternoon to advise that my dogs condition was getting worse and that he was unable to take the medication. The emergency room technician began yelling over the phone stating that this is not her problem. I told them I would be happy to bring my dog back in in case something was wrong and again was yelled at for no reason. After spending $900 for an hours’ worth of treatment the least they could have done was be professional. Your animals will suffer from treatment at this facility and you will be treated just as poorly. AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS! Read Less

I rescue cats, hundreds of them over the years. Since we do our own vaccinations, our major needs are for spay and neuter and when something terrible happens - we need the best, and need it now! My neighbor's princess, love of his life, was mauled by a coyote. When he pounded on my door at 5 AM with a shocky, very hurt cat in arms, we wasted no time rushing to Southern AZ's emergency services. Their staff took one look and rushed her into their trauma center. Now had this been a person at a local emergency room at a hospital, they would have died before forms were filled out. These good vets, stabilized her and made sure she was in no pain before an hour later they came to tell me the options and costs. One of the problems was that the coyotes tooth had punctured an eye. I cannot tell you care and compassion that Dr. Meredith took with Sierra to bring her back to 100%. I also made a pain of myself visiting her every hour or so the first couple days. There trauma facility is spotless; their care is faultless; they will always be my one and only choice for emergency and specialty!

My poor older miniature dachshund cried when I picked her up Sunday night.  She was obviously hurting.  There was no obvious wound or injury.  I took her in and they examined her.  Of course she seemed mostly ok when the tech and doctor saw her.  She flinched a bit, but no crying out like at home.  Pets and kids, what are you going to do?We figured that she played too hard with my other mini dachshund, only a year old.  It sucks getting old.  They sent me home with some pain pills and had me keep them separated for several days.  It seems like it worked.  It sucks getting old, even if you are a dog I guess. The staff was very friendly to me and my little dog.  They made sure her regular vet knew about it because they called me the next day to see if she was ok.  It is nice to know that they cared enough to follow through and informed her regular vet. Read Less

Went to see Dr. Moellen from a recommendation of my current vet for my 12 year old Maltese who had some blood and ulcer around her eye. I called the other vet specialist in turn and not able to fit me in this week! So I called yesterday and spoke with Matthew who quickly returned my call and got me on today!!! I was expecting a much higher bill for all they did and was pleasantly surprised when it was much less than I expected.I fully trust the staff and believe they are the best in the area, I will recommend them to anyone needing emergency veterinary care. We just work up front." I'm not even sure where to begin when it comes to reviewing the incredible staff and fantastic care that my animals have received here. Read Less

I rescue cats, hundreds of them over the years. Since we do our own vaccinations, our major needs are for spay and neuter and when something terrible happens - we need the best, and need it now! Read Less
