This is the best get I've been to. They care about the animals genuinely, and they also care about your wallet. Services here are very reasonably priced and they won't surprise you with a bill... except when it's lower than originally estimated. The doctors and staff are all great. I found a cat hurt on the side of the road and I needed a vet quick! They were the closest but also the best! They knew who I was as I walked in the door and they immediately took the cat. First off, understand that my two cats and two dogs are not pets, they are my kids and very important members of my family. I don't trust many people with my babies. That being said, Dr Granzow and Dr Harris not only take excellent care of Piper, Lima, Mario, and Pisco, they truly care about them. I've taken my fur babies for happy well-visit checkups, sad sick visits, dental cleanings, and yes, even the one we all dread- where we have to say goodbye to our loved one (RIP Cusco). In all of these scenarios, everyone at Alameda Pet Hospital provided me with kindness, compassion, and excellent customer service. In addition to being a neurotic cat and dog mom, I'm also a Registered Nurse and therefore have a fair amount of medical knowledge. Best Vet Hospital I've ever been to. They came highly recommend by my mother. The first time I took my dog Sadie there the vet came in and got on the ground to meet her. She was so gentle and sweet. Sadie needed her teeth cleans and it appeared she was going to need a lot of teeth pulled. My estimate came out to $900-1200 (which is what I paid last time her teeth were cleaned by another hospital) depending on the amount of teeth that had to be pulled. The vet called me after the procedure and said that she was able to clean many of the teeth she thought needed to be pulled and only had to pull a few, she gave me the option to wait on one questionable tooth that would require stitches and said it wasnt worth putting Sadie through it just yet. My bill ended up being under $500 total!!! I have never been so impressed with the care and ethical treatment my dog received and I will never take her anywhere else. Based on the reviews, I concur that this hospital needs to be streamlined on a operation standpoint. I am so I impressed with the fabulous vets here at the clinic. All of the vets here are super intelligent women and very caring towards every animal I've ever brought in here. In a male dominated field, an all female led vet clinic ain't somethin' to sneeze at. No pun intended. Tonight I brought my newly adopted brother kitties Zorro and Zebra in for "shelter exams" and the boys were quickly welcomed to the APH family. They showed me how to clip their claws and set us up with the insider "scoop" on the best pet insurance. In the past few years I was fortunate to work with Dr. Karen Buchinger, Dr. Kristen Harris and Dr. Elinor Granzow with my dearly departed cats, Carlos and KitKat. They provided compassionate and wise care and they also sent condolences from the entire staff upon each of their passing. I will never forget that extra special sentiment, ever. They truly care about my fur babies and me! I can make later evening (post work) check-up appointments until 8pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I've had cats for the past 25 years and I've had vets in three other states. Alameda Pet Hospital is hands down the best veterinary clinic I've ever had the pleasure of patronizing. Read Less

I've been taking my little Rory here since she was a puppy-- Dr. Harris and Dr. Wagner are amazing doctors who clearly have a love for animals. They are honest with treatment plans, make mindful recommendations for people who may or may not be on a budget, and outline all our options to us clearly every time we're there.The staff here are friendly and always greet us with warm welcomes as they always seem to remember us. Whenever Rory has any problems I feel comfortable calling them for advice and they are quick to communicate information to the doctors and calling back immediately. I agreed with the other reviews. Dr. Buchinger has lost her love for animals. She suggested unnecessary dental cleaning and "minor" surgery on my elder cat with early kidney disease and killed my active healthy cat 2 weeks after the suggested surgeries. The minor surgery put a 4" cut on my cat, drugged him badly and eventually cause kidney failure in just 2 weeks time. I put my trust on her and now I lost my beloved cat who could have live many more years. I also seen Dr Elinor. She is totally incompetent. A tech or any cat lovers have better knowledge and recommendation than her. Avoid this place if you love your pet. This place has become yet another vet to purely make money on poor animals. We had an appointment scheduled and when we arrived, they tried to tell us that it had been rescheduled even though we never consented to rescheduling (they left a voicemail the night before). Then we waited over 30 minutes in the room to see a vet, even though we arrived at our original appointment time. We ended up going to Park Center Animal hospital instead, and it was a WAY better experience all around. Read Less

This review has nothing to do with the doctors at this practice. I consider them all to be fine folks that I'd love to continue to use. But, this was too much.I have no idea who Rebekah is, why she was hired to deal with the public or where she got her phone etiquette but I will certainly be asking Dr. Buchinger about it. I have been a CUSTOMER with several dogs seeing 3 different doctors at this practice over 10 years, Rebekah. I consider myself to be on very friendly terms with this practice and well into the $10K Club, Rebekah. I highly suggest that you knock off the BS phone attitude that, for some reason, runs in the front desk help at a lot of vet offices. I have never had ANY attitude via the phone from Christine or Jennifer. Rebekah, you are teetering on this CUSTOMER leaving over how I was treated by you on the phone. I was very emotional and she was sensitive with me, and made my dog's last few moments as enjoyable for her as they could be. She brought in a little bowl of wet food, peanut butter crackers, and cheese for my dog to enjoy, and explained to me what to expect during the euthanizing process. The office followed up the procedure with a very personalized condolences card in the mail two days later. I was incredibly impressed with Alameda Pet Hospital and would highly recommend them. I took my dog for pregnancy check up and the vet doc told me that she was not pregnant. It turned out that my dog was pregnant already 1 or 2 weeks, and end up having two puppies in February 16th. I am upset that they still charge me for the visit. Read Less

I have relied on APH to care for my my 11 year old cats for about 1.5 years.  I started going to them after I got a bad feeling from another vet here on the island; seemed as if they where more into dogs and where trying to get me to do procedures that didn't make sense and where expensive.   In any case I am thrilled with APH.  Dr. Harris has been giving my my little buddies the best care every.  Everything we have done for them has resulted in our cat being more energized and peppy almost like kittens.  Which leads me back to the other vets, this stuff should have been recommend by the Dr. there.  It baffles me because when I went to Dr. Harris I told her the exact same thing as I told the other Dr.  Doctor Harris was able to figure out what was wrong with our cat with an examination and few simple test that did cost me a whole pay check.  After this she began treating both our cat, recommended ways to improve their over all health with a change in diet to reverse diabetes, teeth cleaning and other issues the older cats develop.  Now we have very happy kitties.I high recommend APH for all your pet's medical needs.Best to you and your pets Read Less

Our cats always get great attention here. When my mom's kitty Savannah passed away, they sent a condolence card that everyone had signed. My mom cherished that! My darling Sweet Boy has been coming in twice weekly for fluids for the past several weeks. His weight has been dropping steadily, and is now down to 6 lbs. Poor guy... used to weigh 17 lbs in his prime. Cara, the wonderful tech who gave him his fluids today, just handed me some samples of Hill's Prescription Diet K/D renal forumla chicken & vegetable stew. Can't believe my eyes... We've moved out of Alameda County, but we'll drive the extra miles to go to the Alameda Pet Hospital. Tiger, who passed away a year ago at age 17, had been to a couple of other vet offices before we started going to APH when he was about five years old. He always expressed anxiety at these other vets (Broadway Pet Hospital, Bay Area Pet Hospital), but once we switched to APH, he was always excited to arrive at the vet's office. And it seemed mutual -- the staff always greeted him so warmly, from the receptionist to the vet techs to the doctors. The fact that Tiger actually liked coming to a place where he was poked and prodded speaks volumes to me. I also noticed a huge difference between APH and the vet we saw at the hospital on San Pablo Dam Road, where we rushed Tiger when he was attacked by another dog in Wildcat Canyon Regional Park. Tiger had been shaken by his neck by a dog that nearly killed him. The vet on SPD Road seemed unconcerned about pain once he cleaned up the bite marks and we had to ask for pain meds for Tiger. He gave Tiger a shot but prescribed nothing further. We brought Tiger in for follow-up to APH when they opened on Monday, and the vet validated our concern about pain, prescribed some torb syrup, and found another bite puncture that the SPD Road vet missed. Tiger lived a good long doggy life, and though it was hard for me when his arthritis started getting bad at the end (to go with deafness and loss of vision), I knew that at APH I received the best possible counsel on meds that lessened his suffering. So Rocky, who turned six months old yesterday, will only ever go to APH if we can help it (a weekend emergency would require we go to the emergency vet here in Marin). Rocky already loves the staff at APH, too (though at this point in his life he seems to love everybody). Read Less

They have CARED for our dogs from puppyhood to the golden years, from routine care to mystery illness. My older dogs have lived longer, happier, and healthier than expected, and are always happy to walk in here. My puppies always get a great start in life. Dr. Buchinger has treated our family's pets before she ever came here, and the other vets have all been great when we see them. The staff is friendly and helpful--even more important, our shy dogs go to them happily! Read Less

I've only had contact with this vet clinic once, and over the phone, but my impression was great. My dog ate some ibuprofin, which is very bad, and I had no idea what to do. I called the office and the receptionist was really nice, spent about 10 minutes on the phone with me, and went back to ask the vet what I should do. They obviously really care about you and your pet, and they told me how to induce vomiting WITHOUT having to come into the office. Saved me money and time, and possibly my dog. My husband and I were using this Vet office for a few year for routine medical exams and vaccines for our 2 cats and 2 dogs. I have to say they are for the most part friendly doctors/ staff. Again for routine things. As we all know our loved animals do get sick from time to time. This is where this review gets really bad. I don't believe this office is equipped to deal with sick animals. My dog for example has allergies established for years now- a new vet in the office wants to start testing and changing my dogs diet/ life to re-discover what has already been established. This is frustrating to the owner cause its costs us lots of money and my dog to get more symptoms rather then just giving him the medicine he needs to live comfortable. In addition we brought out cat in for a frequent urinary tract infection- it took 3 weeks and a new vet for my cat to start to get treatment and medicine. This was the straw that broke the camels back for us. Some times re discovery isn't the best for on-going problems- holistic medicine and diet change are good but to let a cat suffer for 3 week pee-ing bl00d and very uncomfortable isn't right nor fair. I went to a new vet and have never looked back. FYI alameda doesn't do their own surgeries either they call in specialists. So keep these fun facts in mind when looking for a new vet. Also be prepared too once they have examined you pet if you have left him or her they do not talk to you in privet they tell you the results good or bad including treatment in the lobby in front of all other patients and they have no shame either. They hand off your animal and move on to the next dollar they can collect. Sometimes nice-ness doesn't account for good quality. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE ENCINA VETERINARY HOSPITAL! They are a full hospital and they are fully equipped and fully staffed every day of the week. Plus they are affordable and highly knowledgeable too. Make the switch do some research. Read Less

After reading all of the reviews about this vet hospital and heard good things about it, and I need a vet as soon as possible because my dog just got injured on his knee. Since I got my appointment on the same day I called them, I took my dog there. I didn't get a chance to meet the vet at all. Only the assistant was seeing my dog. All they did is examined my dog and told me that here is some printout of the problem and told me to rest my dog. I didn't get anymore information at all. And they OVERCHARGE me for whole exam. I didn't know the exam is not including with eye exam also. So they charged me for the eye stain problems. I will never go back again. I felt like rush and didn't really felt that they cared about my dog!! They just there to get your MONEY!!! Read Less

This is a great veterinary clinic. I brought in my dog that I had adopted from a shelter and they were nice enough to give me a free medical exam. The staff is super friendly and knowledgeable and the waiting room is clean. They are usually pretty busy so I suggest making appointments ahead of time. I moved from Alameda to Tracy,CA but I will continue to bring my dog here because I feel that the vets here are trustworthy and honest. Read Less
