Dentistry For Animals

Aptos, California
General Info
About Dr. Judy Force
Dr. Force, DVM graduated from UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine in 1986. She worked in a mixed practice in Invercargill, New Zealand for her very first job out of vet school. That was a challenge!; cats & dogs, horses & cattle and the occasional sheep or deer farm. Back in the states she worked in a small animal practice in South Lake Tahoe, California and then Fort Bragg, California before settling down in Watsonville (Santa Cruz county) about 10 years ago.
In the 1980's there was no dentistry department at UC Davis. The second year out of school, though, Dr. Force took the AAHA weekend courses in dentistry and was hooked. It wasn't until she was working at Santa Cruz Veterinary Hospital, though, that she found they had lots of wonderful dental equipment that was hardly being used that she was able to devote herself to learning as much dentistry as possible.
Her first mentor, Dr. Barry Staley, was a retired human periodontist and came to oversee dental cases that Dr. Force was doing at SCVH. Dr. Michael Floyd was a great mentor until he retired a few years ago and now Dr. Brook Niemiec (in San Diego) is her main mentor. During the last 2 years she has traveled to several veterinary dental practices around the country to work with board certified veterinary dentists and advance her knowledge and skills.
Last fall Dr. Force was honored to have been awarded a Don Low Fellowship in anesthesia. She spent 20 days at UC Davis in the veterinary teaching hospital working in the anesthesia department with Faculty, residents and students and improving her understanding of anesthesia in critical as well as geriatric and special needs patients.
In her free time, Dr. Force enjoys training and competing with her Dalmatians in agility, obedience and an occasional Dalmatian road trial. She enjoys riding her horses on the trail and in dressage competitions. She also likes to play banjo and guitar and spend time with family and friends.

If you want the best dental work for your animals see Dr. Force. Dr. Force is board certified in dentistry. I am very impressed with her and the staff. They are always kind, knowledgeable and professional.  People.....you get what you pay for. You are seeing a specialist. Aptos Creekside charged me more last year for a dental cleaning than Dentistry for Animals. Dr. Force does full mouth x-rays on each animal. Aptos Creekside doesn't do that. It's insane to think I paid the same price for less work from people who are not certified in dentistry. Dentistry for Animals is very knowledgeable and careful about anesthesia. So don't be scared to put your animal under. Dr. Force has worked on all my animals and I'm extremely pleased. Read Less

THE WORST experience I've ever had in healthcare. Went in for a consultation because our puppy's tooth was growing in wrong. We were seen by "Dr. Force" who didn't seem interested in us or our puppy. We were charged $125 for the office visit/consultation, for 10 minutes of her time. She opened his mouth, took a quick look, and then said we needed "crown extensions".. doggy braces. She quoted $600-1800. Just out of college, I don't have that much money. Luckily I had signed up for dog insurance. We told Dr. Force this and she refused to take payment from our insurance company, making us come up with all the money upfront. I should've stopped there and found a different Dr., but she's the only specialist one in the area. The surgery went fine and what was discussed was done. $1,100 later. And that's where it all went downhill. FAST. The doggy braces broke off within 24 hours. I go over to the office immediately the next morning. I waited 2 HRS outside their office after their posted open hours, and still no one had shown up. Meanwhile, I call the next closest dental vet to ask what to do, since only a specialist would know anything about this procedure. A day later, I get a call back from Dr. Force's vet tech who says Dr. Force is on "vacation" for an entire week, and she won't be able to fix anything until a week later. What!? You just did surgery on my puppy and now you've vanished, without even leaving me an emergency contact if something went wrong? We met with another vet to see what she could do. She explained that we actually had other options to fix the tooth (something Dr. Force did not disclose). We left informed, happy, and with NO BILL. The second vet spent an entire hour and a half with us (between phone calls and office visits) for NO CHARGE. Meanwhile, we had paid $1225 to Dr. Force for a total lack of care. Re-check day rolls around, where Dr. Force is supposed to check the crown extensions to see if our puppy's teeth have moved. Again, Dr. Force came in and showed little enthusiasm for our puppy. She looked at our puppy's teeth and proceeded to tell us our dog was "rough" on his crown extensions. Excuse me? Maybe there should have been a thorough evaluation of his very active lifestyle before we put something on him that was so fragile! (We weren't even told how fragile they were, how were we supposed to know?) She then says that the crown extensions "probably did at least something to fix his tooth." Yeah, I really don't want to hear "probably did something" when I'm paying $1200. She then asked if we had any questions, and I said I wish we would have been informed of the treatment options and also given an emergency contact so if something went wrong we weren't left hanging. She gave a short excuse and then said "we'll see you back in two weeks." That's where I'd had enough. I told her, extremely politely, that based on the way we were treated we were uncomfortable continuing treatment with her and we would be finding another veterinarian. This is where it went from BAD to TERRIBLE. She then abruptly stood up, said "okay" and just walked out of the room. No I'm sorry to hear that, no what can I do to make this better. Just basically a screw you then, bye. I then asked Cindy at the front desk (who was very nice the whole time) if I could kindly have the credit on my account ($9) refunded. She gladly said she would, went to get it from Dr. Force, and instead Dr. Force came storming up to the front desk and said, quote, "Let's just give her her money, she OBVIOUSLY wants to leave." So not only did we have the world's worst service when it came to communication about our options or what they were doing to our pup, but the worst was when our puppy had an emergency, no one was there to help us. And then, I felt like she was telling me to get the hell out of her office!!! Dr. Force may be good at the actual dental work, but the way we were treated was as if we were shit, rather than thousand dollar paying customers.Read Less
