Animal Emergency And Urgent Care

I called about a fox tail for my dog's paw and asked for a ball park estimate. The receptionist refused to give me a ball park estimate. I even provided a ball park estimate of what I was given from another vet. I realize my dog hasn't been seen and will need a check up to determine best practice for taking care of a fox tail so the price can vary by a lot. But, I believe in their many visits and experiences with fox tails that they should be able to give a ball park estimate for a fox tail in the paw. If the receptionist refuses to tell me, I would even accept that but there was attitude that I truly don't appreciate. I'm worried about my dog and worried about how much I have to pay upfront, I don't also want to deal with attitude. $97 to determine a fox tail that doesn't include treatment is already high so I would just like an idea of what I'm going to have to pay. I called them at 9:30 p.m. on Sunday of Memorial Day weekend and they answered the phone. This is after calling five other 24 hour hour emergency pet hospitals with no response. So I went yesterday and took my dog and was told that it was 97 to check and tell me what was wrong with her, after that they would give me an estimate of what treatment she needed. So we got inside the vet didn’t know what was wrong with her since she didn’t want to eat and her stomach was like shaking she said she didn’t know and wanted to get a blood test which was $350 just the test it didn’t include treatments or medicine nothing. We didn’t have that kind of money so we decided to leave take her to her regular vet the next day . We basically payed 100 to not know nothing at all. Which is stupid because we pay to know what’s wrong and after that they tell us what she needs and gives us an estimate . And another thing the lady vet was rude to our dog she couldn’t put the thing in her mouth so she wouldn’t bite because our dog was scared moving and after 2 tries she said I can’t deal with this and threw it on the table so we had to do it . My dog is having health issues, and I was referred here. I really appreciate the: doctors, staff and valet. They made me feel like I made the right decision by traveling 3 1/2 hours to treat him. Though, they are 'pricey' they are professional and have a full service facility that reassures a person of their services. Read Less

I have taken two of my dogs here in the last three weeks. During the first visit I was reading previous reviews that had been posted with great trepidation. As I reflect back on my own experience I can honestly say I would bring my beloved pets back here if the circumstances dictated it. As for the negative experiences that people have had here, I have come to the conclusion that as pet owners we are all highly emotional and vulnerable when reach the facility and it affects our judgement and perception to one degree or another. We were treated with kindness, respect and compassion. It can be expensive, but I would expect emergency medical care to not be the same price as a wellness check at my regular vet. As I have set in the waiting room I have witnessed some of the most heartbreaking scenes. I witnessed two different families deal with the loss of a beloved family pet. One family was driving a BMW and the other had to push start their very old truck. Both of the families were treated in an identical manner, with much compassion. The less affluent family continually thanked the staff for their generosity and support. I would gladly recommend them to anyone, they have my full support and gratitude forever. Read Less

My dog became sick and regular vet was closed, I called ahead I was told exam was $97.00 from there I could decide, I was approached with an estimate of $ 800. - $1300. Just for test No treatment at all this Doctor is out of his mind, no treatment and let her suffer. I don't t think so. This place tries to take advantage of people when their hearts are breaking by watching your family member suffer, hoping that you will just say yes. Came in here on a Sunday when my cat started sneezing blood. My regular vet said to bring her to the urgent care and we did. Staff was friendly enough, but when we were put in the triage room we could hear staff talking shit about us. Before we got in there we were ask where we normally took the cat and we said "The Animal Hospital" in Portervillle. That's the actual name, but they thought we were dumb and asked for the specific name to which we replied that was the legal business name. When we were in triage they were making fun of us for our answer and the name of the vet. Seriously?!? We could hear everything they said, so much so that the vet apologized when she came in. They were very helpful and tried to do everything they could even though they couldnt do much for my dog and we did lose her they tried and they were very kind and made sure we were ok after the fact. while i was there it sounded like several people used them for their day to day vet needs as well as more extreme cases.the lady working day shift seemed more thorough i believe her name was hannah. both receptionist were very kind and did great triage. Animal emergency & urgent care is the best in Bakersfield. Not only did they save my dogs life they were kind and friendly and even took the time more than once to call and check up on my dog days after her visit with them. Their facility is clean and the staff are very attentive to the animals. I would recommend them to anyone who needs their services!!! Read Less

Excellent vets at unheard of hours. My dog had a limp and was howling in pain when I decided to take her to the vet at 11:00 PM on a Sunday.  A SUNDAY.  That is such a late hour on a day of rest.  There was nowhere else to go but to an urgent care.  I have been to this Care on an few different occasions and I have always been treated with great respect.  They took my dog and treated her very well as well.  They checked her vitals and made sure she was not having any allergic reactions.  They removed the bee sting that was causing her the great pain, and gave her a shot to prevent an allergic reaction.  My dog left the Care in far better shape, almost immediately. I was very relieved.  Recommended for all dogs.  Dog approved!PS.  They even offered my sister and I coffee at that late hour.  Such a great touch. Read Less

Took our Chihuahua in, after our Vet recommended this place since she was not in. The front staff was friendly and helpful. The vet James Mawhinney did the exam, he was understanding and helpful. The dog needed to be sedated to remove something in her throat. About an hour later we, our dog was coming out of sedation, about another half hour we where on our way home. My wife and I where both very happy, Since we do live out of town, this will be my go to place for after hours and urgent care. Our Little Dear was back to her old self the next day, thanks again. dog was choking on a treat called asking for help on what to do after being placed in hold for 5 minutes they told me to force it down his throat or to come in which my only option was to force it down his throat since I live 40 minutes away from them. no help came from this "animal emergency and urgent care" that day just a loved one lost. Had a cat attacked by a dog. Showed up paid 97 dollars for a piece of paper that said they wanted 2 thousand dollars for x-rays an IV for basic testing. Went to Dr Cooke on Landco Dr. Much better examined the cat right in front of us was 49 dollars, all costs with free overnight stay was 310$ How in the hell are you going to charge people 2 grand for basic service. Go only to this place if its after hours or dire emergency. Read Less

We have had several experiences at this clinic. Each time we, and our critters, were treated with dignity and respect. When our Lab, Scott, collapsed and had to be let go, we were treated with kindness and compassion. Just last Saturday we went in with our very sick puppy, Kelcy, who as it turned out, has Parvo. We were scared we would lose her. Dr. Ratliff was matter of fact but gentle, kind and gave us good advice. Amanda, the vet tech, was supportive, gave us good home-care info and even made us laugh, which really helped. She called the next day to check up on us. Gabby in the front office was very kind and professional. We had a long wait as they were very busy but she kept us updated and informed. I had a horrific experience at this place! This place was all about the money and my animal came second! It was absolutly disgusting the way i and my cat was treated, for example , i noticed my cat was deathly ill so i immedatly raced her to this place, they took her in and then i was asked for my information, i told her i forgot my wallet, she said give me a sec, the next thing i know another brought my cat out and told me , you need ur wallet, and gave my cat back to me! It only gets worse ! Im telling you this place is disgusting when it comes to animals! There not animal people there money people!! Shame on that whole operation! Feel free to facebook me i will tell you the rest of my horrible visit! And yes my cat died in there hands ! They need to be shut down, and i am going to whatever it takes to make these people understand that you dont treat peoples animals the way they do!! Very expensive!! Noticed my puppy was sick and it was a weekend so his regular vet was closed so I had to take him here with no choice. Paid 1500 for my husky puppy who got sick from parvo to last 2 nights there and 1 day. Thought they were giving him a good treatment. To start off the doctor was super super rude & talking about how my puppy was a bad dog & he needed to be trained because he wasn't cute since he was growling a bit and snapping his mouth. He had just got a thermometer and the parvo test up his little bottom, what did she expect. The whole staff was great, only complaint was the doctor herself wasn't professional at all. I thought they were treating my little puppy better but unfortunately I got him back sad & depressed. & ONLY to take him to my regular vet & find out all they had done was put fluids on him for one day and check his blood cells once! And give him a few antibiotics. My regular doctor could've done that for a way lesser price. In fact, he said if I would've taken my dog to him if he was open, he would've gave me back my puppy happy & well. Not sad. & sure enough. On Monday for his check up, his white blood cells had dropped since they only checked his cells once here when he came in & hadn't done so again! Now when the doctor gave him back to me to take home he was super well within an hour. Wanting to eat and play & he hadn't ate since the first day I had taken him to this animal emergency place. He was jumpy and wanting to drink water and just really drastic change compared to this place. & way cheaper. He only charged me 180 for his fluids, exam, and blood work. & another 42 for fluids whenever I feel he isn't being himself. Another check up Monday & looking forwards to hearing how my puppy is doing compared to how well he's been acting since he got care with my regular doctor. This place is worthless!  Took my Chihuahua in on Sat 04/08/16.  She was in labor; breach birth. One leg was sticking out.  Took her in and was told the visit was $97.  After the examination was told, she would need an ultrasound and X-rays total $311.  Informed them I didn't have a budget for that. Was told she was suffering and needed surgery to have her pups removed . Again I explained I didn't have the money for that, and asked  if she could be put down.  Dr VanValkenburg became upset and immediately responded. " then why did you breed her."  I told her we found her and was not aware she was pregnant until recently.   Dr said she would not euthanize her because she was a healthy dog, " I won't do it." she said.   I asked her again, if the dog was suffering, she said yes, and I asked her to please put her down.  Dr refused.  She said it was against her beliefs. What?!! I didn't understand. This little dog was suffering, and because of her beliefs she would not euthanize her.   I ended up bringing her back home, and now waiting on my vet to open on Monday and  have her euthanized.  I just wonder if Dr Ratliff was present she would allowed  this to happened.  Dr. VanValkenburg was was rude, opinionated, and judgmental.  She judged me the moment she walked in the room, before helping my dog!  She said, " if you can't afford to help your dog, you can't afford to put her down!"  I will never take my animal there again. This place was awful to me and my kids. They were so rude when I took my dying dog in there they act like it was my fault. The lady in the waiting room felt so bad for me and the way they were treating me that she paid for my bill which was so nice and I wish I could tell her how grateful I am. It was an awful day and this place made it much worse. This was three years ago. And recently I needed an emergency vet I was willing to drive all the way across town rather than go to this one that was right near my house. Read Less

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO USE THIS HOSPITAL! Overpriced and heartless rude employees and Doctors. I Should have been tipped off when the Doctor "complemented" my English Bulldogs looks, by comparing him to the "ugly beast in the waiting room" but it took the techs down right disrespectful and hate filled comments about money that sent me for the door.... I thankfully left this location last night and found the great service over at BVH on Harris (Highly Recommend for Emergency Care) These people do not care about you or your pet, only your credit card number. Look at their other reviews, I didn't, and it almost cost my dog his life. 2/10/17 UPDATE ON PREVIOUS REVIEW: After my review posted to Google, Animal Control was contacted by A.E.U.C. and a complaint of animal cruelty was field against me..... Animal Control came to my home, inspected my dogs living conditions, and reviewed the medical notes and history provided to me that night by B.V.H. He was quite pleased to see my dog was admitted to a different animal hospital in town that evening, received a 24 hour stay, multiple x-rays, a ultra sound, fluids and medication, he found it even more entertaining that my bill was nearly $1,100 LESS then the "Upfront Payment" Demanded by the hospital that filed the complaint....because it is public record I was able to review the complaint against me and the intake information on the complaint.... Four hours after my Google review! and stated that due to my appearance and behavior the Doctor was concerned I would not pay my bill and would not treat my animal without upfront payment and feared the animal went without care due to owners lack of interest to pay...HAHAHA!! This goes to prove how greedy and uncaring this hospital is!! My appearance, wet hair from putting my dog in the shower to rinse off my pet before transport, sloppy clothes that i could care less about if my dog covered me in blood riddled vomit, and my erratic behavior because my beloved English Bulldog is vomiting blood... This place absolutely disgust me, I have field a second complaint with the BBB and the California Veterinary Board also supplying those complaints with the quotes vs actual bills, along with the bogus Animal Cruelty Complaint.... I took my mixed shepherd into this facility on 1/21/17 because my dog was having issues with her digestive system. She was not wanting to eat and was starting to develop signs of diarrhea. I told the staff that my dog hadn't thrown up or had any other major issues. Dr. Mawhinney decided to give my dog a shot of Cerenia 10mg to help ease her stomach. I looked up the purpose of this injection and it showed me that it's for dogs who are vomiting or animals who get motion sickness. Neither issue at which my dog was having. The side effects show that this injection of Cerenia can cause diarrhea which now my dog has. Why this doctor decided to inject my dog with this medication when she wasn't having vomiting issues has me more pissed off than ever. I wouldn't ever bring my animal back to this place. Read Less

Recently took our 9 weeks GSH pup in  ....our  experience was very good ....the staff (shae) was very polite and informative and our assistant (alyssan) was very nice and professional ......and answered all our questions .... it's a uneasy time dealing with situations like this and we appreciate the professionalism ...!! Monday our puppy got into something she shouldn't have. We started out a local vet that was not able to help since they were closing. They sent us down the hill to this 24 hour vet. They were nice and very helpful. We had to leave our puppy overnight, they told us to call as many times as we would like to check on her progress. We called a couple times and were always treated compassionately.  We picked her up the next morning and was surprised when they credited us back the amount that they did not perform services for. Second amazing experience here. My husband found a kitten at his work site and we took it in for evaluation. We weren't able to save it but the staff was extremely helpful and kind. Absolutely the worst experience.  Our dog suffered a seizure late one night.  Full blown epileptic event that had never happened before (or since).  We of course rushed her to this clinic as it was the only one open at that time of night.  The vet on duty, a Dr. Maruna acted as if we had ruined his night just by showing up.  Very rude.  Basically told us nothing could be done unless more seizures occurred and that he would not prescribe any medication to even get the poor girl some stress relief.  When I tried to ask a question he interrupted me by saying "I'm not finished talking" and proceeded to continue his lecture.  Basically we just picked her up and tried to leave but we had to wait to pay for this useless service.  During our wait she had another seizure.  They took her back and gave her the medication we had asked them to give her in the first place.  They kept her overnight and thankfully when we went to pick her up another vet was on duty.  I hope you never need emergency care but if you do go anywhere but here. Horrible experience and that "doctor" shouldn't be in practice. Don't come here. And it turned out our dog was having an allergic reaction. Our dog was acting really weird, almost passing out and rubbing his head against everything, so we came here. The wait time was ridiculous. We waited around 3 hours before we were actually seen. When the doctor finally came in, dressed in shorts and an old tee, he grabbed our dog rough and squeezed him in a certain spot on his chest, and our dog snapped toward his hand. It may have been due to what was bothering him. The doctor freaked out and jumped back toward the door, and yelled for a nurse to bring in a muzzle, after a while he came back and said there was nothing they could see. We waited ANOTHER 30 minutes for paperwork and to be checked out. There was in total 3 patients in that office that entire time. Just to note, our dog is a mix and stands one and a half ft. tall. We go to the pet emergency room off of Harris west of Gosford if something comes up. Read Less

I had a very sad situation last night, but was amazed at all the wonderful people who made a terrible situation beautiful. A small dog was hit by a car in our neighborhood. About five neighbors came out to calm the dog and wrap it in towels. The injury was bad, so we took it to Animal Emergency & Urgent Care. The staff and Dr. Robert Maruna were wonderful. They were kind and kept me informed throughout the process while making the dog comfortable to ease the severe pain. The Doctor gave me all the options available to help make the best decision. This was an example of the best part of humanity and it shines bright at Animal Emergency & Urgent Care. Thank you Dr. Maruna from me and all my neighbors in Benton Park. Read Less

I usually take me animals to the vet in Wasco, but he was already closed... first they charge you $85 just to look at her. Then they told us what was wrong but gave us a estimated bill that was about $500.00. I love my animals, they are just like kids to me, but I am a single mom with 2 teenagers... that is a almost a weeks pay for me. When asked if they could just do the procedure and give a shot for pain that way we can take her to her regular doctor tomorrow , they said they could but we still had to pay for all 4 medication they sending home with her which still totaled almost $300. Thanks to the Dr and staff at AEUC for being open on Easter.  My 4lb chihuahua had an allergic reaction to a bee sting or insect bite.  She needed a steroid and antihistamine injection to stop the facial swelling. The fees were reasonable and presented to me in writing for my approval before the treatment was given.  So glad I didn't have to wait until the next business day to see my regular vet. Read Less

Very professional techs unfortunately i did not have a pleasent visit with the vet he sugested that I give my dog methadone and when i asked how many mmg it would be he then said "this is by no means to be used for you at home" after i sugested that methadone was used for heroine patients. I found it unprofessional and rude for him to sugest that i would use the drug myself. At that point i said okay i think im going to leave now and walked out after paying the 115 dollar visit. Wouldnt recommend this place l, he even sugested that i take my puppy to get neck and back surgery who is only 1 year old at the moment. By the way i went in here because my puppy was constipated. I took my dog there after she woke up with a large abscess over her eye. They basically told me there was nothing they could do because they had limited services there and sent us home with antibiotics. I got my dog into the vet today, they did emergency surgery and she ended up losing her eye. If the Dr at this place had a clue what he was doing my dog would still have both eyes. Took my pug in with a cut on her eye .  Front staff were great . Then came seeing the dr .we discussed ,due to severity of the injury to the eye it may have to come out and he would need to do a more extensive exam. Well after leaving her there all day tell midnight i was left with a 600 dollar bill and advise to follow up tomorrow with my regular vet and a pet eye specialist  in LA. They were happy to inform me the bill wasn't the 1300 to 1800 the quoted me  but was only 600 . How nice of them . So i pick um my pug and go to a new vet ive never been to and was told what i knew already from past experience with having pugs the eye will need to come out .  So basically this place is just a place to tide you over tell your vets office is open and they charge you double and triple for less then standard care .  Wont be back ever . Absolutely ridiculously overpriced. Our dog ripped 3 of her stitches and so we took her in to see if we could just get a quick stitch fix, first of all they charge you $85 just to be seen, we were then quoted $345! $345?! What are they going to suck her fat out too with those 3 STITCHES?! Her original surgery at her vet which included her antibiotics and her ointment was only $160, why would they charge $345 to fix 3 damn stitches! Needless to say I walked out paying $125 only to be told to take her to her vet in the morning to get her fixed. What was also weird is they don't let you go back with your pet for their look over. This place earns one solid star for being open on saturday.  It is very unfortunate that they are a vet sales and services place and by any means NOT A CARE PLACE as their name may have lead someone to believe. These people sold their hearts long time ago and they do not care about anything not represented in dollars.  Go elsewhere if you care about your pet , because these people don't.  And no payment wasn't a problem because they had my credit card in their possession.
