My dog Mauser is a Shar Pei and Dr. Utt was referred to me back in 2005 when I was living in NE Bakersfield. We were always accommodated by the great staff regarding dropping him off before I went to work for routine visits and then picking him up once I got off work. The staff know him by name and just love him, even though he has a bit of a drool problem, but that's what a towel is for! I moved to Seattle in June 2011 and unfortunately, could not take Mauser at the time and am waiting for my parents to move up and bring him. It's just taking longer than expected! I visit as often as I can. So, they have had him and now they are all BFFs, haha, but I still pay for all of his needs. So, now to come to the big reason I'm writing this review today. My Mom called me frantic on Saturday night 5/11 saying that Mauser was extremely lethargic, had a fever, and was not eating or drinking for the whole day, so they had taken him to the after hours vet. The staff there didn't know what was wrong, but wanted to keep him there, start IVs and do labs, quoting her over $1300. I said I didn't have that kind of money and neither did she, unfortunately. They ended up signing her up for Care Credit to pay for a bag of fluids and some amoxicillin to start him on, for about $150. Monday came and he still was not eating or drinking and not being himself at all. Monday was also his birthday and he just had turned 10, so I was so worried. The first diagnosis was an upper respiratory infection, his labs and X-rays were clear, but they wanted to keep him overnight for observation. Tuesday came and Dr. Utt personally called me to say he's still not eating/drinking and she wants to do an endoscopy to see what's going on. She called me later that day and said she had discovered a mass under his tongue, which was why he had no intake, and he also had a mild case of laryngeal paralysis which can affect large older dogs, that had lead to the chest infection. She said she wanted to get the ok from me now to perform a laser surgery on him ASAP while he was still sedated and remove the mass and get it biopsied, which would take 2-3 days for results. An asst called me afterward and said his surgery was a success, he was put on IV fluids to get something in his body and he was now resting. They kept him one more night and on Wednesday, I was told by the vet he was finally eating and drinking, a lot and able to go home later! I was so relieved and I cried. He was picked up by my Mom and he was so happy to go home. Dr. Utt has done so much for my family and Mauser...he's been with us for so long, we'd be devastated to lose him now suddenly. I'm hoping the biopsy reveals nothing dire and that he can be with us for awhile longer just being goofy and happy. Thank you, Dr. Utt & the Auburn Animal Hospital staff, you guys have no idea what you've done for us!Update: so unfortunately, my Mauser had to be put to sleep on 6/10/13 due to the melanoma spreading too fast. Dr. Utt and the girls were so awesome during my family's extremely difficult time and the process was fast and my baby drifted away peacefully. We decided to have him cremated privately and we picked a beautiful wooden box with his name engraved for him to go into. Thank you, Auburn, for taking such care of my Mauser and us. We are grateful.
