Let me start by saying most of the staff at this vet was amazing, informative, and understanding. However, Dr. Willis provided us with some of the most uncaring treatment we have ever received from a vet. We took our pit bull up for a full initial exam so that we could continue coming back as regular customers and we also wanted to have an abscess on her foot looked at. The doctor looked at her abscess (from a distance) and gave us a prescription for the infection and had the nurse write out a quote for possible surgery and then walked out. We had to remind them that our appointment was also for an initial exam (may I point out that they did not appear to be very busy at all). All he did for this "exam" was make my boyfriend turn my dog so that her head was away from the doctor and he listened to her lungs after telling my boyfriend, and I quote "sir, my life is in your hands!" Because she looked backwards to see who was touching her. Now, maybe it's just me, but I feel as though we were treated unfairly. We were not pleased with the extent of the exam and when we called with the hopes that they would make it right, we talked with Julie and she said, and I quote, "what can we do to make this right?" We gave her the following suggestions: we could either be refunded the money we paid for an exam that we did not receive, OR we could bring our pit bull in and get our exam at no charge. She refused both with the explanation of, "if we gave you a refund or waived the $30 fee for a "recheck exam", then that would be saying that we did something wrong - and we did nothing wrong." They felt that was more important to them than customer service. She told us we could bring our dog back in for a recheck exam (and still be charged $30) and they would do the exam then IF POSSIBLE. OKAY. SO HERE IS MY PROBLEM. She told us on the phone that on the day of our original appointment, a full exam was not possible due to fear of being bitten by our dog from either fear or aggression........ AGAIN. HERE IS MY PROBLEM. Our dog is SO gentle. She does so well with strangers, babies, young children, and adults. EVERYBODY. She is the sweetest thing and we have never seen her show anybody anything but LOVE. So, I just want to know what exactly my dog DID to make it so that her exam was impossible, besides being a pit bull? They claim that they see pit bulls all the time and that they love them - which may be true. But she did NOTHING to show ANY signs of possibly biting anyone. We feel as though Dr. Willis lacked any bedside manner with our dog. He didn't come in and introduce himself to our dog and try to make her feel comfortable and safe with him before he started his "exam". So weird!TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE SERVICE!!!!! Read Less

Wow, this vet clinic has a lot of complaints and issues with the dr. Here.  My issue is not with the service provided but for he fact they apparently billed me for services I never received.My I used this clinic years ago but since my dog died years ago my wife and I have never been back.  Well, apparently they seen or serviced someone's dog and charged it to my account. Which I didn't even realize I had an account as I paid every visit because they expected payment every visit!   Some how they say they mailed me an invoice for some service, yet I never received an invoice yet they had my phone number and never tried to reach out to me regarding some outstanding payment for who knows what.  So it wasn't until I reviewed my credit report to find out they turned my over to an collection agency.  So when I tried to reach out to the staff to find out why the hell they're  charging me for they couldn't help me nor fax me a copy of the invoice.   So I called the collection agency, they can't fax me a copy because their fax is down, it's been 2 weeks and they said they mailed it to me but I have yet to receive it. I called agin today and "Art" says he put in. Request to fax it to me so I can verify what it's for, and he tells me I should receive the fax in 72 hours, by Friday for sure! So if they can't get their billing straightened out right, it only goes to figure what kind of service they're doing for your pets!  I guess like everyone here who has issues with these people can't all be wrong!!  And to top it off, "Art" tells me the invoice he's faxing me is not signed?  WTF? I recommend Dr. Willis and SJVH highly! I have been a long time client here and have had many pets treated here, as well as worked here. The tech staff and groomers are great and truly make this place a great clinic to take your pets. Especially being able to treat small and large animals is unique in this community and I'm thankful for the experience I've gained here. From a client prospective: they are incredibly accommodating and accept walk-ins (when majority of Vets do not) and make simple routine appointments easy to schedule. From previous employer prospective: I learned so much with working with very experienced technicians and a great surgeon such as Dr. Willis. Plus their community out reach is incredible. I never wanted to leave this review...but after seeing another review that is exactly the same...I need to share. Early last year, we took our healthy, vibrant, incredible dog to get neutered. He was barely 6 years old and full of life. They stated that the surgery went well, and he was bleeding a little more than usual so recommended he stay there. I also woke up to the worst call of my life stating he died some time in the night and they believed his stomach flipped. They offered to cremate him which was kind, and sent flowers...however, I started receiving calls soon after hounding me for payment. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? After calling and crying on the phone-only then-did they remove the balance. Not having an overnight staff and demanding the dog's stay after surgery is NOT OKAY. I do not recommend this Hospital to anyone after experiencing the explosive temper of owner, Dr. Willis. However, my experience with the other vets in his office was always positive. I say this after using this office for almost 12 years. Recently, however, a friend new to the area needed help adopting/ buying a small dog. I referred her to my vet office. The dog was rescued and we wanted to make sure he was not microchipped and had a basic clean bill of health as he appeared to be.  The dog was friendly and calm when I met him, walked him, and transported him in my car. However, after arriving at my long time vet office the dog was extremely scared to be picked up and removed from the back of my SUV. I asked the front desk for some assistance. The assistants were all helpful, but the dog was very frightened of them. I know enough about dogs to know you don't reach at a acted dog or talk in a high voice to calm them down. I asked the office assistants if they'd be quiet while they'd remove him. They were able to pull him out with his leash and he jumped out of car. They wanded him and found no microchip. I was able to walk him to the scale and he easily jumped on- but I could tell this little guy was still scared and didn't want to be touched.  We went to an exam room and waited for Dr. Willis. The dog sat on floor by my friend's chair and wall.  Dr Willis entered - said hello- as we did and I explained that he wasn't my dog but the "rescuer" had given us permission to get him checked out before my friend purchased him - and I recommended we come to SJAH.  I also informed him that he was very calm until we got here. He was scared -  we were trying to get a ballpark idea on his age and overall health. Is there a way we could check him out? The dr asked me to put him up on the exam  table  . I told him we weren't comfortable doing that right now (figuring my vet had more experience and technique in handling scared dogs). I asked him perhaps if he had a soft muzzle we could put on him for the purpose of the exam?  Dr Willis paused - turned red and faced me and YELLED "Get OUT!and take your dog with you - Get OUT!" I was stunned.  I said to him I/our dogs have been patients of his for 12 years of his, and I referred this friend to his office - and so won't be spoke to that way." My friend was scared and took the dog and left the exam room. Dr Willis the said Get out - I will not put myself or my staff at risk !". I did not know how I was going to pick the little dog up and put him in my SUV with him scared (without a muzzle) and I was so shaken up- I called my husband on my cell in his exam room in tears asking for him to come down and help me.  I explained what had just happened. He was shocked. Then Dr Willis barged back Into the exam - red in the face and yelled "if you don't get out now I am calling the POLICE!".  I ran out of exam room and waited for my husband to arrive. Both of us (my friend and I )were shaken up.  It was bizarre - uncalled for and totally unprofessional. The next day my husband picked up all our dogs' records /files and told them we would never be back. There was no apology given - no "so sorry for the misunderstanding "  I would NEVER trust this Doctor with my sick scared or beloved animal again.  His behavior was ridiculous . I took my pup in for an issue with her tail. they gave her a shot and some meds and said it was an allergic reaction or something. Today while brushing her that it has gotten worse and not better. I called almost 12;30 so i can go in and have her looked at (im freaking out bc it looks like she chewed half her tail off) and the person who answered the phone clicked. So i called back thinking it was me and it just kept ringing. I went online and saw they are opened til 1;30 and in my anger I am writing this review. i literally wrapped a towel around her tail so she doesnt make things worse. I'll start out by saying the staff is amazing, On another note, Dr. Willis is a rude, non sympathetic, money hungry person who talks so disrespectful and doesn't know how to be professional at all! We spent $2000 in tests and all we got was that my dogs white blood cell count is high. He kept wanting to run tests after tests and then come back with no answers. When I asked him a question, he got so defensive and told me and I quote, "I am tired of the attitude. I have to say.. I am VERY particular when it comes to 1) customer service and 2) my fur babies. The wait was a tad bit long but only because they had so many emergencies come through. Which I also loved about them. I didn't mind waiting for that. If I ever have an emergency with my babies I know for a fact this is where I will take them. The front staff was so sweet and efficient. They loved all the babies so much. Dr. Willis was very personable (I've worked with doctors for 5 years) and really took his time with my baby. Even though I knew he was swamped with emergencies, he still took his time. His assistant Sam was such a sweetheart and very informative. Brenda at the front desk was absolutely wonderful. She held my pup several times giving him love. She was busy but still took the time to make my visit very personable. I will never go to another vets office again! Been here a few times for vaccinations with my Yorkie so I have never seen the Doctor, only office staff who are normally very friendly. Today I went in to have my 9 yr old yorkie checked for what I'm thinking is a UTI (won't have the results until tomorrow morning). I was talked to by the Doctor (which I was told was the owner) like I was ignorant and he would only look at my husband when he was talking, not myself, who was standing right in front of him. So after a urinalysis, cystocentesis, an xray, antibiotics along with a pretty price tag I still don't know what is wrong with my dog and I'm angry for being talked to the way he did...I hope we never have to see that doctor again and will only go to this vet office for my yorkies vaccinations only because it's convenient for us and I can deal with the office staff. 2 stars for the office staff and no stars for the doctor! I have a beautiful  chocolate lab, Ryder. We have taken him there since he was born. He is three now, and every visit has been amazing! From shots to x-rays to sick visits, they have always been able to get him in pretty quick. The vets have a great mannerism with him and the staff is always friendly and talk me through everything. The cost is reasonable and sometimes even lower than the average vet. They also have grooming services and boarding.  I highly recommend SJVH! Read Less

Took my baby French bulldog over to San Joaquin right after I got him. They were quick to get me in to see the vet. The girls there were so amazing and sweet! They were able to answer all my questions and give my puppy the care and attention he deserves. I would recommend this vet hospital to anyone in need of veterinary services. Had my dog's dental work done here. (Obviously I'm a huge dog person to have her teeth cleaned)The staff is always friendly and it was much better price compared to other vet hospitals. My dog's teeth ended up whiter than most peoples. I have used San Joaquin Vet for at least 14 years and must say Dr. Willis is a very caring and kind doctor, however, the other doctors that work there I can't say the same about. My dog (10 months old) was having a severe allergic reaction,coughing and choking and gasping for air  and I called to let them know we were rushing her in and I was told by Kelley (I believe) "we have patients with appointments so we will "try" to work you in." I again told her my dog was having trouble breathing, she then informed me that I did not have an appointment and they would "try" to get her seen. We arrived there quickly and they took our dog back with out us to see the vet on duty, not Dr. Willis, and came back and said, " she is stable, you will have to wait." I took in my chihauhau mix today to have a dental cleaning was a little nervous when I dropped him off but I knew he would be fine. I dropped him off at 9am and they said to call around 2 for an update and he would be able to come home between 3-5 but i called around 1:30 he was up and awake and they everything went great and he was ready to come home I was glad. We took several kittens here to be checked out. One had a respiratory infection (we had caught them wild and found homes for them; we also were going to spay and neuter,etc.). The vet said the one kitten would have to be isolated for several days from the others. Of course that made sense. When the vet was asked what the charge would be to administer antibiotics twice a day and board the little one, she said $18/day. But when the front desk person was advised at payment, she, in turn, asked my wife to wait while she "asked the manager." She returned and quoted the outrageous price of $98 a day!! We could've gotten a hotel room for the cat at that price!!! We'll never return to this place. Too bad doc, we have other animals and we've done this several times with stray cats and dogs. My dog is very anxious. She's a rescue and came from a very bad place. Even though I've had her for a few years now, she still gets very nervous around new people. She was at ease at SJVH. They've always been incredibly sweet to her. When she had a cyst burst (I didn't know what it was) they got her in thirty minutes after I called. They cleaned her up, didn't charge me an arm and a leg, and my sweet Eleanor was never a wreck over the nice ladies who helped us. The doctor was so, so wonderful. All of the techs were awesome as well. I'm writing this now because I just discovered blood in my dog's urine and the first number I called was SJVH. I'll edit this review with the follow up. I can't remember the doctors name, but he was a class act.  We have taken our dog and cat here and have excellent service each time.  The doctor is very sympathetic and was excellent with our animals.He gave us all the options of each diagnosis and didn't try to push us in the most expensive direction, like we usually experience around town.  Also didn't try to push shots/vaccines on us.  Was just a down to earth animal lover.He called and checked up on our animal days after the visit to make sure the cat was doing okay.  Guy is a class act.  When I find out his name I'll update the review. I dropped her off in the morning as instructed. She was as lively and happy as ever. I called later that afternoon after her surgery to check on her and they told me over the phone that she was doing fine and they fed her a little bit and they walked her around a little bit. I went to bed early, eager to go pick her up in the morning. Instead I woke up tot he worst phone call of my life so far. An employee telling me they found her dead. I immediately went down to go see her for myself and say goodbye. The doctor had nothing to offer but apologies and and guesses. Guesses because they weren't there. She probably could have been saved if someone was there to help her. I've never gone back there and never will. If your dog ever requires surgery, don't take it there or your dog might die of neglect too. The people there were friendly, but friendly does not excuse such extreme incompetence. I love them! they explain everything and give you options on your pets care. they always give me an estimate and have no pressure to do anything i don't want to do. the nurses are awesome! super friendly and answer all my questions! i went to another vet once and will never go to another one again! they cost less as well!Read Less

I took my puppy here to get neutered, the staff was great! From the first time I called to get information the staff was very patient with me and answered all questions I had. Also the price I was quoted is exactly what I paid ( I expected I would be charged for unexpected charges that occurred during the procedure) once I picked up my little Harley the staff went thoroughly over what to expect next, and how to care for him.   They even called a few days after his procedure to check on how Harley is doing. One week later Harley is healing great and back to normal. I had a great experience and will make this my new vet!!!! Read Less

First I need to say there was a VISITING vet on our visit.  I was told the owner/regular was out of town for 3 weeks.  We arrived on a Friday afternoon close to 5pm with a dog that turned out to have pancreatitus.  The vet, I felt, was rude and I overheard him getting onto one of the staff for allowing someone to come in after 5pm, he was complaining about how he had to stay late on a Friday night, blah, blah, blah.  In the end we were charged over $400 for some blood work, 2 x-rays and some shots.  The next day we took her to another Vet in town that did more blood work and did an IV for $118.  She ended up being hospitalized at a wonderful Vet in Atascadero overnight and their TOTAL bill was under $500.  So it wasn't just the rudeness of the visiting Vet but I believe I was overcharged.  Next time I'll go to the one we found on Hageman. They are scared of dogs. When we picked up our dogs from boarding, they both had kennel cough!!!When I called for help because my loving dog seemed to be suffocating, they REFUSED to see him even tho they had seen him for over 7yrs!!!! Read Less

I do not advise anyone who loves their animals to take them to this vet.Their boarding enviroment is cramped and the dogs are let out only 2 times a day. They are left in their cages for 12 to 13 hours at a time. When I picked up my dog from boarding he smelled of urine and he had dried fecal matter on his feet as if he was left to sit in his own mess. When we went for care I felt that they were more interested in making me think my dog was sicker than he really was so my vet bill would go up. I got a second opion and my suspisions were confermed. I am trying to find a new vet. Please dont subject your pets to this harmful inviroment. Read Less

Our family has 2 cats and now 3 dogs who are all patients.The doctors and tech's are animal lovers for sure.We recently almost lost or 10 week old puppy due to a an abscess that was the worst they had ever seen .they went above and beyond their duty .and now our puppy is on her way to a full recovery .I can not thank them enough for all that they did. My dog loves San Joaquin Vet! She gets excited when we turn onto Allen Rd because she knows that she gets to see her friends. This is extremely comforting to know that she must receive excellent care when I am not in the back area with her, since she is so excited to see them.
