Berkeley Dog and Cat/Special Veterinary Services offers general wellness care for your animal companions as well as Special Veterinary services from Board Certified Veterinarians and 24 hour emergency care.
As a full-service, small animal veterinary hospital, Berkeley Dog & Cat Hospital provides a broad spectrum of diagnostic procedures. We strive to offer scientifically advanced veterinary care as well as compassionate advice, allowing you and your family to enjoy your pet companion for a many years.
Our job is to treat your pets when they aren't feeling well and help you learn how to keep them happy and healthy every day. We are proud of what we’re doing today and of our rich history of helping the animals of Berkeley for more than a century.

Hospital Overview
Berkeley Dog & Cat Hospital has been a leader in veterinary medicine, treating the Bay Area’s pets for over 100 years.
As an accredited member of the American Animal Hospital Association, Berkeley Dog & Cat Hospital is dedicated to providing excellence in veterinary care. Our hospital is evaluated regularly by AAHA to ensure that we meet or exceed the association’s strict standards of excellence. AAHA standards are recognized around the world as the benchmark for quality care in veterinary medicine.
Hospital History
People have been caring for animals on our hospital site since the early days of California history. Records show that a livery stable initially occupied this site in 1879. The property extended over what is now two entire blocks and harbored a blacksmith who cared for the horses of the Berkeley and Oakland police and fire departments. There were numerous paddocks and holding pens for the animals, mulberry trees in the pasture, and equipment for treating the animals when ill.
A New Focus on Pets. In 1907, Dr. McNair officially named the facility Berkeley Dog & Cat Hospital and began specializing in pet animals rather than farm animals—a rather novel concept at the time. Reportedly, injuries from a horse kick forced him to stop treating large animals and concentrate on his dog and cat practice. Since that initial construction, there have been at least six facility remodels. Portions of the old building that survived the 1906 earthquake still form the framework in one part of the hospital.
By the 1960s, under the tutelage of Drs. Cucuel and Frye, the hospital continued to treat Berkeley’s growing pet population and earned itself a reputation for high-quality medicine and progressive practices. The practice became known for our special expertise in reptile and amphibian medicine. We soon became the source of numerous scientific articles on the care of these more unusual pets and Dr. Frye published the first textbook on reptile medicine.
Special Veterinary Services. In 1976, Drs. Benjamin and Shriro took over the practice and quickly realized that the rapid advancement of technology occurring in the medical fields was beyond the financial reach of local veterinarians. Two years later, they opened the Berkeley Center for Special Veterinary Services within our facility to identify the then-novel concept of a group of specialists all sharing a single facility and a single set of advanced instrumentation.
With board certified specialists available, local practitioners could now send their patients to us instead of the University of Davis. We were the first private veterinary hospital in the world to install a CAT scan machine. Along with special radiology and surgery instruments, this allowed us to provide advanced diagnostics and therapeutics to the Bay Area’s pets.
With a further expansion completed a few years ago, we are now one of the largest and most sophisticated veterinary facilities in California.

Bringing our beloved 3yo dachshund to Berkeley Dog & Cat after he was sideswiped by a car is the biggest regret of our lives. He had no external signs of injury and was initially stable but was denied the chance of life due to the inadequate care he received. He had significant internal bleeding that was evident from his blood tests but the “full-service” hospital could not perform a CT scan as we were told they had no one to operate it, they had no surgical capability (not even for a simple chest tube), and were staffed primarily by relief vets with no continuity of care. They do not keep blood yet did not recommend transferring him to a facility that did and instead he was left to bleed out until he eventually had a cardiac arrest. Despite the merely palliative care he was given, we were charged $13,214 over two days and my wife (in floods of tears at 1am) was asked to pay additional charges just minutes after holding his dead body and later that morning when she picked him up to take him for an autopsy. There were no signs of any medical leadership and the medical director they had listed on their website was taken off after we filed a complaint. We later learned that this once storied practice was quietly sold to private equity (PetVet Care Centers, who are owned by KKR) in 2017 and if you read the reviews on Indeed/Glassdoor/Reddit you will see how employees feel about the management and workplace environment they foster both at this location and nationally. We don't see how emergency care can be safe under these circumstances. Despite bringing up our concerns we have been completely stonewalled. Please do the research we wish we had done and know your other options locally, especially for emergencies. Read Less

The care at this clinic surpasses any I have experienced anywhere except a vet at I had 50 years ago who would have loved to have had the technology that this clinic has available. I have had many animals of all kinds from farm animals of all varieties , thoroughbred horses, birds , dogs, cats, rodents , and reptiles and I really wish that they could have received the care that my four dogs are now privileged to receive from this group. I don’t think you could find anything better without going to UC Davis. The staff is informative, caring, friendly and efficient at all levels as well. That makes it an especially reassuring place to receive treatment for your pets. Read Less

I brought my dog here this past weekend because he had an ear infection and one of his talents is telling me he has a health problem right before or five seconds after our regular vet's office closes. I gave Berkeley Dog & Cat Hospital a call and decided to stop by because their exam fee is super reasonable before 11pm. I got there around 6:30pm on a Sunday, fully expecting it to be super busy but, to my surprise, it was very quiet and not busy at all. I was checked in and brought to a room promptly. When the doctor came in to tell me his suggested course of treatment, I really appreciated that he listened to my concerns about putting my dog under anesthesia and trusted me when I told him that I knew my dog and that he would behave for the ear exam. With the help of some treats, my dog was a slobbery gentleman and let everyone look into and clean his ear. Another rad thing I found out during the check out part was that they would submit a Trupanion claim for me which was super awesome and helpful. And, now that I know they see exotic pets, I may have to think about bringing the rest of my furry friends to this office for regular vet care! Read Less

Everyone was really nice and I was seen quickly, but the doctor was inexplicably unable to figure out that my dog has a broken tail and NOT abdominal pain. When he sent me home with probiotics, I was perplexed and pretty sure he was misdiagnosing her distress. After feeling around on her body when we got her home, I realized quickly that the pain was coming from a tail injury. She winced and yelped when I pushed a spot on her tail up toward her rear. Did the doctor not even check this? I checked the internet for symptoms of a broken tail and the symptoms matched EXACTLY. Why did I pay a doctor $400 to misdiagnose the problem? We may go back for emergencies, but I'll try somewhere else for my regular vet. Disappointing. One more thing-I paid $77 for the probiotics that we didn't even need. Read Less

I took my 3-toed box tortoise here last week & was very pleased with the experience. I've had my tortoise for 21yrs, & have never taken her to a vet. I could never find one that I trusted enough who had a Dr. who was specifically trained & who primarily dealt with reptiles. Also, thankfully, there was never any problem with her that I would need to take her. I just wanted to do an overall checkup. I moved to the Bay Area a couple years ago, & thought it might be time. I decided to bring her in because I noticed her shell was flaking a little on the bottom & I was concerned with the overall condition of her shell (though the Internet is wonderful, it can be the devil at times! I was terrified she had shell rot. She does not. Whew!). Also I knew her nails & beak were way over grown & needed to be trimmed.Dr. Harkewicz & his understudy (I can't remember her name, but she was really nice) were both great. I was nervous bringing my lil tortoise in, but they both made me feel at ease. He checked her bowels & insides, her eyes, her lungs, etc. He informed me that my tortoise needs more vits & minerals, but overall, was very healthy. I was super happy to hear that. He gave me advise on where to go for supplies, & what to get for her, along with advise on feeding her earthworms, as opposed to mealworms, since she would get more nourishment from them. (I fed her a chopped up earthworm today, & my god was she excited to have it!)I left her at the vet for a few hrs so they could trim her beak & nails, as well as give her a vitamin injection. When I picked her up, so looked like a different tortoise! Still SO CUTE, but she looks so much better & healthier. Read Less

This place prescribed the medication responsible for my dog's untimely death.Waffle was unusually healthy for an older puggle of 9.  One day she started having really bad diarrhea.  I tried the usual home remedies first for at least a week, but after her stool didn't seem to be improving, I brought her in.Dr. Jeffrey Freeman saw her and ordered a test to check for Giardia (a parasite), which came back negative.  He prescribed her metronidazole, which is commonly prescribed both for Giardia and as an empiric treatment for diarrhea. Not only was the staff extremely slow about checking me out in a timely fashion, but they then started asking me which medications I'd like to give her, as if I know the first thing about veterinary medicine.  I was there to seek their expertise because I didn't know how else to help her.  So that was pretty frustrating. Then I gave Waffle the first dose.  Then I took her hiking.  We came back home and I noticed she'd started limping.  I thought maybe it was related to the heat and continued the medication for about a week and brought her back in when her limping got really, really severe.  Dr. Freeman charged me $100 for the visit, diagnosed her with canine vestibular disease, and suggested she stop the metronidazole.  "Let me know if it doesn't clear up in a week or two.  You can contact me by email."  He never responded to my emails.A month and a half later, after about 8 vet appointments all over the Bay Area, I had to put Waffle down because she was severely paralyzed.Every vet I went to said it was likely a brain tumor that caused her death because of the progression of her neurologic symptoms.  No vet says it was the metronidazole and Dr. Freeman said it was highly unlikely for her dose for that to happen.  Yet the internet is littered with accounts of dogs dying from neurologic problems after taking this medication, and in many resources it is the only medication listed as a possible cause of vestibular disease.Vets get in their comfort zones and aren't familiar with the possible side effects of the medication they prescribe.  I followed the vet's advice blindly and learned a hard lesson.  Worrisome as Waffle's case of diarrhea was, I would never, never, never knowingly have given her a medication to treat it where one of the potential side effects was death.  Since it was just diarrhea, it never even entered my mind to check the side effects.RIP Waffle, she was a wonderful dog and dear friend. I am eternally indebted to Berkeley Dog & Cat Hospital because they took such good care of me and my dog.My dog got away from me and was hit by a car on Oxford and University in Berkeley. A bystander rushed us to the hospital, and the staff there immediately provided the best care for us. Although it was hard because my dog passed away, the staff really did their best to provide me my own private room, water and anything else I needed to grief. They walked me through the private cremation and paw print process.Later on, I took my other dog into Berkeley Dog & Cat Hospital for a shot and deworming. Again, they were kind and patient and, I believe, their price was fair. They are also very responsive on the phone and check their pharmacy line every hour. I have brought my three dogs to Berkeley Dog & Cat, so I have been a customer for about 25 years. The care has invariably been excellent and caring. In particular I would like to mention their emergency services. My puppy was hit by a car (a friend who didn't know we had a pup came over and left the front door open). We rushed her to BD&C, not knowing if she would survive. They stabilized her breathing and determined her pelvis was broken. Dr. McBride asked Sage, which specializes in surgery, come to evaluate her. After surgery and a few months of R&R, my beautiful dog is perfect. She is usually the fastest dog at the dog park and considers herself a professional ball player. It is a real pleasure to bring my dog to BD&C for her routine healthcare and express my deep gratitude for saving my best friend.Read Less

The vets, techs, and office staff have travelled the journey with us through the lives of our late dogs, our late cat, and our current animal family. This includes their having contributed to cutting edge research. My tiny puppy was close to death suffering from Parvo. I went in to the Berkeley Dog and Cat Hospital on Haste St without an appointment. They all were very sweet to us. The Doctor told me that unfortunately, my ""Penny"" wasn't going to survive. She could have misled me to make a few bucks, but she didn't. She handled ""Penny"" very gently, and she put her out of her misery. Then, she waived the visit fee, and the euthanasia fee. She only charged me $35 for the cremation. I was very distraught, so their generosity was much appreciated. A few days later, I received a sympathy card from the Hospital. The Doctor and 2 other staff members all hand wrote a few sentences to me inside the card. No one will ever know how much this meant to me! Dr. Harkewicz is the best reptile veterinarian I know in the bay area. I worked at a specialized reptile store for a few years and never met a doctor more knowledgeable and caring about his job and patients.I found out about him when I went to school in Berkeley, and even though I now live in Santa Clara, 60 miles away, I still take my reptiles only to him.I've owned quite a few reptiles and many of them were sick rescues I would take from work. To this date, he's helped me out with Tokay Gecko nutrition, sticky pad issues, infection and parasites. He's also helped with eye problems in one of my Brown Anoles. He treated shedding problems on my Niger Uromastyx. I've also had a rare tree frog, banded gecko, veiled chameleon and leopard gecko that he may have treated (but I'm not certain since this was quite a long time ago). Either way, if he didn't I wish that he did.Bottom line, I would recommend Dr. Harkewicz for all reptiles. He is incredibly knowledgeable about many different reptiles and illnesses which is very rare from my experience in the trade. Reptiles are still not very well understood compared to more common pets just because of the sheer number of species. While many hospitals have experts on dogs or cats, and can usually handle the more common reptiles such as leopard geckos and bearded dragons, very rarely do they have a true expert on a variety of reptiles and conditions. On top of this, he is both friendly and caring about the pets.Look no further than taking your reptile here, I cannot recommend him enough. Read Less

In a previous review of Berkeley Dog & Cat Hospital, I extolled the virtues of their care, professionalism, courtesy, and overall swell-ness. This review is limited to the kind vet who made such a favorable impression: Dr. Kenneth Harkewicz, V.M.D. This man looks like the quintessential vet: he's big, bespectacled, and wears flannel. He takes his time, listens, and takes in all the information. In return, he gives a lot of sound advice, with follow-up instructions, his business card (with e-mail, should questions arise) and truly wants to know how your pet is doing after the treatment/appointment.He handles dogs, and cats, tho' his specialty is in that nebulous category, "exotics"...I noticed lots of magazines on reptiles, as well as several specimens of various tortoise shells in his inner sanctum. We inherited an Amazon parrot years ago (truly the bane of my existence!...but that's another story) and I hope against all hope Papageno will not be needing Dr. Harkewicz's care (ka-ching, ka-ching!! Parrot vet bills are not inexpensive), still, should something arise with the old feathered reptile, I would unquestioningly bring him/her/whatever here. This is a great place to bring your pets for wellness care as well as any problems they may have. I have 100% confidence in this doctor's service. Read Less

Read Less

Both cats that I've taken to this hospital have received excellent care at a good price. I found this hospital when my young cat Humphrey fell of the balcony and broke his leg on a Saturday evening. Humphrey received immediate care and I was kept informed of his condition and treatment options during the entire visit. He was treated and referred to a veterinary orthopedic surgeon at another facility. My other cat Maya has back problems and arthritis, and the staff who treated her were gentle and thorough.

I brought my two cats here for the first time for a regular check-up following adoption. Staff was competent and friendly-- front desk, vet tech, and the vet. The vet and vet tech were so sweet to Button and Pip and did a great job making them feel as comfortable as possible (and me!). The facility is clean, there's coffee and wifi while you wait, and a parking lot. I would definitely recommend!Read Less

Dr. Harkewicz is the best reptile specialist I have found, after doing hours of research and calling many veterinarians. He treated two of my African Dwarf Frogs when no one else was able to help with the rare situation, and he practically saved their lives. With Dr. Harkewicz, I am always confident that my frogs are in the hands of the most knowledgeable and kind doctor. Dr. Harkewicz is also very flexible and caring. He responds to all of my questions over email, and follows up several times (even asks for pictures of my frogs), to ensure that everything is going well. Very grateful to Dr. Harkewicz for his dedication and care. Read Less

Thank you to the staff - receptionist, assistant and vet - who were beyond compassionate and professional in supporting me to say goodbye to my beloved family cat. There was not one thing they could have done better. Far exceeded what i could have hoped for at such a difficult time. Ken is an amazing exotic animal vet. He was great helping one bird I owned when someone stepped on it accidentally. He was calm and gentle and helped us nurse the bird back to a recovery. He just recently spent a significant amount of time over the weekend consulting with me by email for a dehydration emergency with another bird. And he refused to take any payment for the help! This is a vet who truly cares about the animals under his care, and is in the business because he wants to be.I'd highly recommend him for bird care, and from reading other reviews, he is just as good with other exotics like lizards/snakes. Highly, highly recommended. Read Less

They took the time to think about my sorrow and to make me feel better. These people are the best!!! Read Less

Read Less

We have always had wonderful experiences with the staff during regular hours. Unfortunately, we and our pet were treated negligently in emergency care by Dr. Summer Godfry. She was very condescending, unprofessional, and insensitive to our pet's needs and gave us information another vet told us was incorrect. However, we have had good experiences after hours with Dr. Carlson. My recommendation: Berkeley D & C is wonderful if you avoid Dr. Godfry! Read Less
