Established in 1971 by Doctors Jay and Ethel Rose, San Luis Rey Equine Hospital has earned a strong national and international reputation as a distinguished equine hospital. The facility has pioneered advances in equine abdominal surgery, radiographic technique, and nuclear scintigraphy. Many innovative surgical techniques and treatment regimes have been developed at San Luis Rey Equine Hospital.
A full-service facility, the hospital provides advanced diagnostics, lameness, medical and surgical care to horses from around the U.S. 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Our little colt had a heart murmur and was recommended by our vet to go to SLR Equine Hospital to have him gelded. We were super impressed with the care, cleanliness and professionalism. He had some infections that we had to work through and they were careful and consistent in their reporting to us and pro-active care. He is healthy and happy and we are grateful. Would recommend using SLR Hospital for any issue and enjoy the beautiful area while you are there!

Dr. Korin Potenza is an incredible diagnostic veterinarian. She is dedicated, methodical and passionate. She kept at it until she found the root cause issue with my horse and was very diligent in communicating along the way. She even rode my horse in order to determine and feel what was occurring. Even though she is an hour drive for me, I wouldn't trust my horses to anyone else. My horse received the best of care while he was there for several weeks.

For me there is nothing more painful than watching your beautiful horse get sicker and sicker without knowing what it is. At the recommendation of my local Equine Vet, I took my Mare up to San Luis Rey Equine Hospital and after running tests and scans we now knew what was going on with her. While keeping her there for a week, we put her on a heavy antibiotic - probiotic regimen for almost two months and just this past week she got an all clear. The difference in her is amazing and I am truly grateful for the very existence of this place. Thank you to ALL that were involved. If you ever find you don't have the resources with your local vet, I highly recommend you contacting this place. A special Thank you to Dr. Korin Potenza.

I can not thank SLREH enough for saving my boy...Scotch was there for over 2 weeks, and was in critical condition for a lot of the time. While Dr. Potenza was very realistic about possible outcomes, she always reassured me they would do everything they could for my horse, and not stop fighting to save him. She kept me updated constantly, and I never felt out of the loop. She's amazing! All the interns were awesome too, and always answered my (many) calls and questions to my entire satisfaction...big shout out to Stephanie especially, for always making me feel like she took care of my horse as if he was her own! Miracles do happen, and he got to come home yesterday! Thank you for giving me my baby back !!!!

There simply aren't words to express how grateful I am for Dr Huggons and absolutely everyone at San Luis Rey. I could write a book trying. Our beloved OTTB spent a total of two weeks in the care of SLREH after an extremely horrific accident, so we had more than our share of experience with everyone there under very trying circumstances. Dr Huggons is both professional and experienced yet compassionate and caring. Everyone gave generously of their time, their patience, communication and their love, every step of the way. We ultimately lost the battle, but it was one well worth fighting and we will never forget all that was done for our baby girl, and for us.

My Arab gelding Titanic was admitted 9/20/14 with severe colic symptoms. He was eventually diagnosed with ulcers and was hospitalized for a week. Dr Potenza called every morning to let me know how my gelding was doing and was always available when I had questions. After my gelding had been at SLREH a few days, I was confident he was being treated by top notch professionals. Titanic is now home and THRIVING! A big "thank you" to Dr Potenza and all of her staff for sending me home with a healthy horse!

Pretty much a disaster. My horse had one undescended testicle that required surgical removal. Surgery was performed and I was advised a small, undeveloped testicle was removed. To make a long, horrible story short, it was not removed. Other vets have told me they likely removed a lymph node or fat blob. The large, healthy testicle that was missed by San Luis Rey Equine Hospital was later removed by a different equine hospital. From my experience, I would not expect this facility to admit any error and you should be prepared to take the matter to court. Sadly, that option did not work for me as we had moved out of state, but at least my contacts in Southern California were warned.

I am so ridiculously happy with how the staff at SLREH handled my mare who is not so fond of the vet to say the least. My mare stepped on a screw almost a month ago and after her still being lame and only getting worse after trying different things, my primary decided it'd be best to take my mare, Sweets here. She stayed 3 nights and I was always updated with how she was doing. My mare came home yesterday and I couldn't be happier with how she is looking. 3 weeks expected recovery time and my baby will be back to normal :) thank you Dr. Huggons and all staff that had to deal with her hatred of being doctored!!

Who knew that SLREH could get better? We have been coming to SLREH for years. Our colt had spinal fusion surgery by Dr. Grant in 2003 and we've kept coming back every since even. though we lived in Long Beach at the time. We now live closer, so it's much easier. I was really hesitant when I found out the practice had been sold, but I'm here to tell you, it is better than ever!!! The veterinary team of Dr. Huggons and Dr. Potenza is second to none. I have never met such a group of dedicated professionals in the equine veterinary business. They not only give excellent care to you and your horse, they Care about you and your horse. 5 Stars is not enough!!!!!! Love Love Love SLREH

Jackson, my 12 year old Arabian gelding, a medical miracle from the day he was born, was here for two weeks and received the best of care and attention. Dr. Huggins and staff were exceptional. Dr. Huggins called me faithfully every morning with a status report and returned any calls I made. And when I was there every afternoon during visiting hours, they answered any questions and concerns that I had. Not only was the staff diligent in checking status and vitals but also providing mental and physical needs of my Jackson, taking him for multiple walks, talking to him (CJ , the receptionist wearing many hats, said he would be missed as he was a character and talked to everyone, etc. - she also said he would miss the attention he received there). The facility, the staff and the care are exceptional. Dr. Huggins regularly communicated with Jackson's vet at East County Large Animal Practice, who referred us to the facility and saved Jackson's life by doing that, I am sure.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about the staff at this equine hospital. When my gelding came in late Sunday evening, he had three vets and a tech swarming him. He has the best care and they even took care of me in my emotional state. Quickly he was taken to surgery and I received a prompt call when he was stable. The staff call me for updates on his status. I strongly recommend this facility!

Recently my horse had an episode of colic in the middle of the night. My horse was down in the trailer when we arrived. The veterinarians and staff had my horse in surgery in what seemed like a few minutes after we arrived. My horse made it through surgery and was in a stall and letting everyone in the barn know that he was feeling better within 2 hours. Through his entire stay the staff provided excellent care to both my horse and myself. I was kept informed each day of his progress and they even sent me pictures so I could see him each day. My horse recovered without any problem and is doing great! San Luis Rey Equine Hospital is the only facility I will use for my horses care

I will never forget the kindness and compassion that I was shown by San Luis Rey Equine Hospital?s doctors and staff when I brought my mare in for fluid therapy during a colic episode. The attentive and alert support staff cheerfully greeted me upon arrival while Dr. Valdez and other interning doctors quickly and calmly tended to my mare. Within moments of our arrival, my mare was placed in stall and on fluids. I was very impressed by the professional courtesy of the entire staff, and the excellent quality of care both I and my mare received throughout her stay. I felt completely at ease leaving my mare in the care of the San Luis Rey Equine Hospital?s veterinarians overnight and when I called to check in on my horse, the staff cheerfully answered all of my questions and tended to my concerns. After a couple of days my mare was released from the hospital and I was able to take her home. Throughout the week following my mare?s discharge, I called several times with a variety of questions regarding her care and the San Luis Rey Equine Hospital staff never ceased to amaze me with their kind words and their willingness to help. I would recommend San Luis Rey Equine Hospital to anyone who expects nothing but the best for their horse.

This place is GREAT. I had an appointment with Dr. Joe Cannon for a lameness evaluation on a horse that I was interested in purchasing. However, this was a bit different then most scenarios. The horse was coming from Idaho, and was going to need to catch the bus back to Idaho that very same night if he did not meet Dr. Joe's approval in the exam. I was a nervous wreck because the arrival time was going to be very late from my appointment time. Dr. Cannon was very kind to still evaluate my horse for me, especially because it was hours past my appoinment. Everything was done in an efficient and timely manner. I love Dr. Cannon's ways of evaluating and making sure there are no problems with the horse. He goes over them with a fine tooth comb, however, he is so experienced, it takes him no time at all to find something if it is there. He did not waste any of my money on things to check or do that were not really necessary, considering his findings on the examination. I love this hospital! I will always use them as my veterinarians, for my every need. Thank you San Luis Rey and Dr. Joe.

If SLREH makes a medical error, do not expect them to admit it or respond to you in any way. Be prepared to take them to court. In 2007, SLREH performed endoscopic surgery on my two-year old horse to remove an undescended testicle. Dr. Joseph Cannon advised me the surgery was successful. After two years of difficulties, testing confirmed the presence of functional testicular tissue with hormone levels almost as high as that of a stallion. His undescended testicle had clearly not been removed. SLREH and Dr. Cannon have failed to respond to inquiries about this problem in any fashion. Unfortunately the horse pays the price. I am planning to take the case to small claims court.

Dr. Korin Potenza is an incredible diagnostic veterinarian. She is dedicated, methodical and passionate. She kept at it until she found the root cause issue with my horse and was very diligent in communicating along the way. She even rode my horse in order to determine and feel what was occurring. Even though she is an hour drive for me, I wouldn't trust my horses to anyone else. My horse received the best of care while he was there for several weeks.

For me there is nothing more painful than watching your beautiful horse get sicker and sicker without knowing what it is. At the recommendation of my local Equine Vet, I took my Mare up to San Luis Rey Equine Hospital and after running tests and scans we now knew what was going on with her. While keeping her there for a week, we put her on a heavy antibiotic - probiotic regimen for almost two months and just this past week she got an all clear. The difference in her is amazing and I am truly grateful for the very existence of this place. Thank you to ALL that were involved. If you ever find you don't have the resources with your local vet, I highly recommend you contacting this place. A special Thank you to Dr. Korin Potenza.

I can not thank SLREH enough for saving my boy...Scotch was there for over 2 weeks, and was in critical condition for a lot of the time. While Dr. Potenza was very realistic about possible outcomes, she always reassured me they would do everything they could for my horse, and not stop fighting to save him. She kept me updated constantly, and I never felt out of the loop. She's amazing! All the interns were awesome too, and always answered my (many) calls and questions to my entire satisfaction...big shout out to Stephanie especially, for always making me feel like she took care of my horse as if he was her own! Miracles do happen, and he got to come home yesterday! Thank you for giving me my baby back !!!!

There simply aren't words to express how grateful I am for Dr Huggons and absolutely everyone at San Luis Rey. I could write a book trying. Our beloved OTTB spent a total of two weeks in the care of SLREH after an extremely horrific accident, so we had more than our share of experience with everyone there under very trying circumstances. Dr Huggons is both professional and experienced yet compassionate and caring. Everyone gave generously of their time, their patience, communication and their love, every step of the way. We ultimately lost the battle, but it was one well worth fighting and we will never forget all that was done for our baby girl, and for us.

I agree 100% with Juli. Dr. Potenza goes well beyond her duty and has an excellent eye for lameness. I recently took a horse in for arthroscopic surgery on a bone chip and the care and follow up was excellent. Unfortunately for me, they are a good + hour away but I make the drive because they are that good.

My Arab gelding Titanic was admitted 9/20/14 with severe colic symptoms. He was eventually diagnosed with ulcers and was hospitalized for a week. Dr Potenza called every morning to let me know how my gelding was doing and was always available when I had questions. After my gelding had been at SLREH a few days, I was confident he was being treated by top notch professionals. Titanic is now home and THRIVING! A big "thank you" to Dr Potenza and all of her staff for sending me home with a healthy horse!

Pretty much a disaster. My horse had one undescended testicle that required surgical removal. Surgery was performed and I was advised a small, undeveloped testicle was removed. To make a long, horrible story short, it was not removed. Other vets have told me they likely removed a lymph node or fat blob. The large, healthy testicle that was missed by San Luis Rey Equine Hospital was later removed by a different equine hospital. From my experience, I would not expect this facility to admit any error and you should be prepared to take the matter to court. Sadly, that option did not work for me as we had moved out of state, but at least my contacts in Southern California were warned.

I am so ridiculously happy with how the staff at SLREH handled my mare who is not so fond of the vet to say the least. My mare stepped on a screw almost a month ago and after her still being lame and only getting worse after trying different things, my primary decided it'd be best to take my mare, Sweets here. She stayed 3 nights and I was always updated with how she was doing. My mare came home yesterday and I couldn't be happier with how she is looking. 3 weeks expected recovery time and my baby will be back to normal :) thank you Dr. Huggons and all staff that had to deal with her hatred of being doctored!!

Who knew that SLREH could get better? We have been coming to SLREH for years. Our colt had spinal fusion surgery by Dr. Grant in 2003 and we've kept coming back every since even. though we lived in Long Beach at the time. We now live closer, so it's much easier. I was really hesitant when I found out the practice had been sold, but I'm here to tell you, it is better than ever!!! The veterinary team of Dr. Huggons and Dr. Potenza is second to none. I have never met such a group of dedicated professionals in the equine veterinary business. They not only give excellent care to you and your horse, they Care about you and your horse. 5 Stars is not enough!!!!!! Love Love Love SLREH

Jackson, my 12 year old Arabian gelding, a medical miracle from the day he was born, was here for two weeks and received the best of care and attention. Dr. Huggins and staff were exceptional. Dr. Huggins called me faithfully every morning with a status report and returned any calls I made. And when I was there every afternoon during visiting hours, they answered any questions and concerns that I had. Not only was the staff diligent in checking status and vitals but also providing mental and physical needs of my Jackson, taking him for multiple walks, talking to him (CJ , the receptionist wearing many hats, said he would be missed as he was a character and talked to everyone, etc. - she also said he would miss the attention he received there). The facility, the staff and the care are exceptional. Dr. Huggins regularly communicated with Jackson's vet at East County Large Animal Practice, who referred us to the facility and saved Jackson's life by doing that, I am sure.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about the staff at this equine hospital. When my gelding came in late Sunday evening, he had three vets and a tech swarming him. He has the best care and they even took care of me in my emotional state. Quickly he was taken to surgery and I received a prompt call when he was stable. The staff call me for updates on his status. I strongly recommend this facility!

Recently my horse had an episode of colic in the middle of the night. My horse was down in the trailer when we arrived. The veterinarians and staff had my horse in surgery in what seemed like a few minutes after we arrived. My horse made it through surgery and was in a stall and letting everyone in the barn know that he was feeling better within 2 hours. Through his entire stay the staff provided excellent care to both my horse and myself. I was kept informed each day of his progress and they even sent me pictures so I could see him each day. My horse recovered without any problem and is doing great! San Luis Rey Equine Hospital is the only facility I will use for my horses care

I will never forget the kindness and compassion that I was shown by San Luis Rey Equine Hospital?s doctors and staff when I brought my mare in for fluid therapy during a colic episode. The attentive and alert support staff cheerfully greeted me upon arrival while Dr. Valdez and other interning doctors quickly and calmly tended to my mare. Within moments of our arrival, my mare was placed in stall and on fluids. I was very impressed by the professional courtesy of the entire staff, and the excellent quality of care both I and my mare received throughout her stay. I felt completely at ease leaving my mare in the care of the San Luis Rey Equine Hospital?s veterinarians overnight and when I called to check in on my horse, the staff cheerfully answered all of my questions and tended to my concerns. After a couple of days my mare was released from the hospital and I was able to take her home. Throughout the week following my mare?s discharge, I called several times with a variety of questions regarding her care and the San Luis Rey Equine Hospital staff never ceased to amaze me with their kind words and their willingness to help. I would recommend San Luis Rey Equine Hospital to anyone who expects nothing but the best for their horse.

This place is GREAT. I had an appointment with Dr. Joe Cannon for a lameness evaluation on a horse that I was interested in purchasing. However, this was a bit different then most scenarios. The horse was coming from Idaho, and was going to need to catch the bus back to Idaho that very same night if he did not meet Dr. Joe's approval in the exam. I was a nervous wreck because the arrival time was going to be very late from my appointment time. Dr. Cannon was very kind to still evaluate my horse for me, especially because it was hours past my appoinment. Everything was done in an efficient and timely manner. I love Dr. Cannon's ways of evaluating and making sure there are no problems with the horse. He goes over them with a fine tooth comb, however, he is so experienced, it takes him no time at all to find something if it is there. He did not waste any of my money on things to check or do that were not really necessary, considering his findings on the examination. I love this hospital! I will always use them as my veterinarians, for my every need. Thank you San Luis Rey and Dr. Joe.

If SLREH makes a medical error, do not expect them to admit it or respond to you in any way. Be prepared to take them to court. In 2007, SLREH performed endoscopic surgery on my two-year old horse to remove an undescended testicle. Dr. Joseph Cannon advised me the surgery was successful. After two years of difficulties, testing confirmed the presence of functional testicular tissue with hormone levels almost as high as that of a stallion. His undescended testicle had clearly not been removed. SLREH and Dr. Cannon have failed to respond to inquiries about this problem in any fashion. Unfortunately the horse pays the price. I am planning to take the case to small claims court.
