I have been taking my cats here for years, my gecko once. They don't really specialize in reptiles, but do take good care of my kitties. Most recently, my wannabe Garfield cat has been peeing on my bed, with intent on having my attention while he's doing it. Internet said take him to the vet first, they check his urine, it's a UTI. Had antibiotics for him, now on the way to kicking that UTI.... When my Mom's cat reached his time, I went with her. The staff had the room ready, with candles and tissues. That day was heartbreaking, but they made it as bearable as they could, us knowing it was his time. He was about 22 years old. They fixed up a lot of his battle wounds from fights with neighboring cats for years before that. Dr. Franquelin is an animal whisperer for sure.  My dogs are easy to get along with however a vet's office can be stressful on any animal.  As soon as they see him, their tails start wagging.  Our little guys just love him!  He takes his time with us every time we go in for an appointment.  He answers all our questions and he's got a great sense of humor which is appreciated when we are a little uptight about something going on with the dogs.  We wouldn't take our animals to anyone else.  Oh, and did I mention he also does procedures free of charge for a local animal rescue organization? As a Pet Sitter providing in home overnight care-why would I ever want or need a dog? 5 yrs. ago I started caring for a pup named Flood, in a busy household with another small terror named Fargo. Flood and I bonded immediately and we always laughed about how I should just take him home with me. 9 weeks ago we all decided to change Floods address and it's been wonderful for all of us-especially Flood. If there was a higher rating than 'Excellent' I'd give it to them. Dr. Franquelin is one of those rare people who seems to genuinely care about every animal that comes through the door. I've been taking my two dogs there for over 3 years, and now I bring my cat (with kidney failure) there too. Dr. Franquelin takes time to explain everything that's going on with your pet, including one time he used Facetime on the iPhone to talk to my wife about our cat. His staff is also excellent. Maggie is the glue that holds that place together...she's awesome and also loves animals. Can't say enough good things about Calistoga Pet Clinic. My only problem with them is they're too far away. Like all of the other reviewers, I wish I could give Dr. Franquelin and his team 10 stars.  On Monday I had to send my little Bichon to the great dog park in the sky.  It was a last minute decision and of course a daunting one to make. I moved from LA two years ago and sought out a first class veterinary facility and found Dr. F.  Sending my 15 year old dog, although so very sad, was made into a loving and simple transition. After explaining how the euthanasia process worked, watching my little guy pass on, I got a hug, the beautiful Rainbow Bridge poem and a small clay heart that had my dog's name stamped into it with little hears and a post-mortem paw imprint. What vet have you used that is so compassionate and giving? If you are not taking your pet to the Calistoga Pet Clinic, which is gorgeous and so comfortable, you are not treating your pet to the top of the line pet care. Spread the word. I wish I could give more than 5 stars. I am over the moon with this clinic. I just switched from a different clinic, and it's like going to a different planet. The staff is open to all sorts of questions, and Dr. Franquelin spent A TON of time going over every detail of every procedure he did, answered every question, and was open to substituting drugs that I was uncomfortable using on my cats. Previous vet got annoyed anytime I deigned to ask a question or challenge anything they said. These people are incredible, and the prices are surprisingly reasonable. If you need dentals done on any of your critters, this is definitely the place to go. Hello, they can do dental x-rays!!!! Hallelujah. Read Less

Dr. Franquelin is an amazing and compassionate man.  Losing my soul dog in an emergency situation was devastating but I was thankful to have Dr. Franquelin to support me through it.  It was before hours and he got to the clinic in record time with that sense of urgency to do whatever he could to help save Raider that makes you know he's a vet for all the right reasons.  The staff is always welcoming and kind (especially Maggie!) and I am so glad that Calistoga has a vet of this caliber. Go here with your sick pet and expect to leave with an empty wallet.Our experience is not like those of the others that have posted positive comments.  Steve is a nice guy and seems to be competent.  But, and this a large but, he does unnecessary procedures and his rates are about twice what they should be.  We will take our dogs elsewhere in the future after the last visit there where the total bill was over $500. I woke up this morning and my cat was so sick. I've only  lived here 5 months and didn't even think we had a vet in town, when I called they said bring her in right away, they kept her 7 hours, I'm happy to say she is purring again.  I was shocked when the bill was only $150.00, everything in Calistoga is sooo expensive,  I gave them the last check in my checkbook and she knew I was short on money when we both realized I hadn't paid for the new food she would need for her diet she gave me the bag of food and said pay us on your next payday.  I am so thankful to Calistoga Pet Clinic!!  Thank  you so much!! We absolutely love Maggie and Dr. Franklin at Calistoga Pet Clinic. Believe it or not, our dogs LOVE going to the vet. The get all yappy and excited as soon as we pull up and practically run me over to get in the door. Everyone there is so gentle and loving and really do care about giving our mutts the best care possible. They've helped us so many times with working around our schedules and really made an effort to help us out with travel and long work hours. They have very fair rates and their service is the best I've ever experienced. We live far from Calistoga now, but always make the drive up there even though there are a ton of vets closer to home. I have used the Calistoga Pet Clinic for over three years and they are just great. Not only are they state-of-the-art, they are great in an emergency and great with chronic problems. Dr. Franquelin is terrific, loves all animals and will actually tell you what he can do. He will also tell you what the options are and how much they will cost. I have a part-Siamese with allergies. He was losing his hair. Franquelin put together a three-pronged approach to the problem and I am happy to report, my cat symptoms are pretty much relieved and he has all his hair. My cat has also had laser surgery there for a tumor under the tongue. The whole experience was easy in terms of knowing what was going on, how much it would cost, and finding out what the pathologists report was. The clinic offers boarding as well and my kitty goes there whenever I am out of town. The staff is great and they love my cat. I know he get the best care possible. The Calistoga Pet Clinic is a beautiful building with wonderful technicians and a great veterinarian. If you have an emergency or need something as simple as a health certificate, Calistoga Pet Clinic is the best option in the area. The building is amazingly high tech- it resembles a boutique out-patient (human) hospital in its level of quality. Seriously, I'm surprised this place is reserved for animals. The surgery room has a viewing window that makes everything feel so medically reassuring. I would certainly trust them if my dog had problems. I can't believe these kinds of facilities are available in Calistoga... this is probably the best veterinary office I've ever seen! The only reason I can't give 5 stars is because I've only had non-emergency interaction with them; times of crisis determine a veterinarian's true worth. Read Less
