History
Established in 1979
The Animal Medical Clinic was founded in 1979, located in the newly constructed Shepard Place Shops, in Carpinteria. The business had several owners in the 1980's before being purchased by Dr. Smith in 1981. Since that time, Dr. Smith has worked hard to improve and upgrade the facilities and services of the Animal Medical Clinic so that he can now provide the best medical and dental care possible.
Dr. Smith has 20 years of clinical experience and is the only doctor at our practice. You will always be assured of seeing the same veterinarian at each visit, who will know both you and your pet. In addition, Dr. Smith makes himself available for after hours emergency consultations and can even make house calls when the situation warrants it.
Meet the Business Owner: Scott S.
Dr. Smith was born in the Bay Area, but moved to Germany when he was ten and lived there until he graduated from Mannheim American H.S. in 1976. He came to Southern California to attend Pomona College, in Claremont, where he earned a bachelor's degree in Music. After a change in plans, Dr. Smith attended UCSB for his pre-veterinary course work and fell in love with the Central Coast. After graduating from UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, he moved to Carpinteria with his young family in 1989. Although well versed in all aspects of small animal medicine, his special interest is in surgery, with a growing interest in dentistry. His hobbies include skiing, Scuba diving, backpacking and, of course, music. Dr. Smith is a past President of the Santa.Barbara/Ventura Veterinary Medical Assoc. and current President of Band Forever, a booster group for music in our local schools.

I changed veterinarians when Dr. Smith was recommended by a woman who's business is dogs. His prices are so cheap that my veterinary sister said his drugs are not marked up at all. Leo loves going to the clinic and is treated like a star every time. He will not proceed if it is unnecessary. He will let me call in with problems and see if I even need an appointment. Also, he takes in animals all of the time that are in need. I live in Santa Barbara but the drive to Carpinteria will always be worth it. Thank to Liz, Brook & Dr. Smith for all that you do! My cat developed cystitis which can be a life threatening emergency.  I called Dr. Smith's office, and his knowledgeable and friendly staff explained that I needed to bring my cat in as soon as possible.  They scheduled a same day appointment.  Dr. Smith saw me promptly, examined my cat, and performed the necessary lab tests.  He found the cause of the problem and offered a prescription cat food which, he said, would relieve the cystitis and prevent a recurrence.  His vet bill was extremely reasonable.  Within 24 hours, the cystitis had ceased and my cat was out of pain and happy again. The best!! In SB area most vet's are crazy expensive! If you're new to town, this is your guy.He really cares about the pets and is a level headed and realistically priced doctor. We took our dog to him for his whole life, but also went to other doctors. He was the first to notice a heart murmur when Willie was around a year old. Dr. Smith took care of Willie until he was probably 8 years old. We moved around a bunch and probably had him at 4-5 other vets. Toward the end of Willie's life we went to see a doctor who told us he couldn't do anything more for our dog unless we first paid $4000. That was not a possibility. We went for a second opinion and got a similar reply. They said lots of tests would need to be done. Each told us he had a month left. As a last ditch effort we brought our very ill dog to Dr. Smith. We should have gone to him first but when we moved back to the area, we didn't live in Carp. Once we got back to Dr. Smith he examined Willie. We told him about what the other doctors said. He looked Willie over, listened to his heart and said, "It's his heart murmur causing the problems. Here's some pills. It will help him for a while, but there really isn't much more that could done regardless of how deep your wallet is". (that's a paraphrase but probably accurate enough. We were hoping to get 6 months with him. After being told that one month was all he had left, we felt 6 months would be great and we'd be very thankful for that. Dr. Smith gave Wille some pills, changed us about $150 for the visit and Willie lived well over a year. When it was time to "put him down" Dr. Smith came to our house so Willie could die at home. He took him away and a short while later he had a beautiful box made with Willie's ashes in it. (his practice offers this service). Dr. Smith was the best doctor to care for our dog and the most reasonable. There are many doctors that are more "popular" but if you want a doctor who cares and is realistic and helpful in treatment, Dr. Smith is your man.PS: EVERY time I went in there, the staff was fantastic...all of them. Thanks Dr. Smith. You hold a warm place in our hearts Read Less
