Never will I go back.  I brought my pet in to be looked at for two things.  The Dr was slouched in the waiting room watching tv.  He never said hello when I came in and he was absolutely unprofessional.  I asked him if he was the vet and he said yes.  He could have cared less. The staff was kidding him about his wanting to watch the end of his show rather than go in the waiting rooms.  He was unprofessional.  By the way he only diagnosed one of two things; the second being a major item.  Never will I recommend this place - its also not even a relaxing place. Been bringing pets here since I was a kid.  They always took very good care of my pets needs.  One of my cats had a hernia, and they were able to perform surgery and fix him up.  I was surprised how affordable the surgery was compared to other places.  A couple years later one of our other cats had an infection from a scratch.  He developed a cyst on his face and it swelled up and made it hard for him to see.  They performed surgery and our cat did great.  He healed up nicely and with no problems.  You always have to consider that any surgery depends on the pet too.  If they have preexisting conditions, it can cause complications for any surgery, vaccines, etc.  It's always a good idea to first have a full examination when adopting a pet.  This way you know what their preexisting conditions are in the event they might need surgery or vaccines of some kind. We took our guinea pig to see him and she was diagnosed with pneumonia and she was given 2 shots one was antibiotics and vitamin c to boost her immune system and we were told not to give her any medication that night just to start the medication in the morning. When I went to get her in the morning to give her her first dose of medicine I noticed that she was breathing funny she anyway Drumstick ended up passing away on Sunday. So when I called on Wednesday to question about ...getting our money back for at least the shots, I spoke to the office manager and she was very insensitive and and rude she said that since she was an exotic animal that they gave her the shots and just hoped for the best I mean really, I can't even believe that she said that to me about Drumstick. I mean we thought she was going to be fine and now she's gone. She passed away not even 24 hours after us taking her to see the vet. They did not refund our money for shots that didn't even work. Dr Max Hibi is a wonderful ve! I have had all my dogs seen by Dr max, when I lived in Chula Vista. Even tho I live in the north part of San Diego I will drive all the way down to Chula Vista to have my dog-shiba inu to be seen by him. Not sure if i like this place i took my cat to the grooming and after her experience she started being aggressive like if they did something to her evertime my mom get her stick my cat gets really scare and runs away. We have never even tend to hit her with a stick or anything so it seems pretty weird that shes acting this way. If you dont want your pet to act like this i wouldnt recommend. I've been here twice for walk-ins. I even called beforehand to make sure I could walk-in the second time because I was turned away the first. The lady on the phone said 9-2. Brought my 5 year old Schnauzer in because he was sick. ( This was his vet I would bring him to for his shots and when he was a puppy) He had ate a bone and got real sick. They took an x-ray and it showed little fragments of bone that were on it way out of his body and one piece of bone the was a little big. They said I can bring him home and they were going to treat it as a upset stomach. Before I brought him home they gave him IV fluids and two types of injection medicine. One for nauseous and a antibiotic. They then gave me the same meds to bring home and give.I told the vet and vet assistant during they exam that he would have seizures once every three to four months. I even asked the doctor what would the side affects be to the medications. He told me one is a antibiotic and the other one might make him a little hyper. So I brought him home and even one hour from leaving the vet my doggy started to shake and convulsing really bad and past away in my arms.No today I have to go down to the office and tell them I don't want to pay for the services and to refund my money, and have to bury my baby boy!!!Have to pick a star rating or I would pick no stars!!! My daughter needed this place for her bearded dragon..  initially they qouted a price and we paid it. 20 mins later they called my daughter and tokd her they made a mistake and that they did not charge her for the fecal sample. A few years back, when my husky decided he wasn't going to share his mattress with our new dog, he proceeded to eat a good half of his large matteress. This catastrophie turned into a large intestinal blockage which needed urgent medical attention. The first time I came to this Pet hospital I thought everyone was nice and trustworthy. The second time I came the staff was highly irresponsible. They did not communicate that the doctor was out of town; however, upon arriving to the appt they all of a sudden told me I was not seeing the original Vet and I was going to see a substitute. Little do yall know this sub was a crazy woman. She told me my bunny has an ulcer in her eye, and that I can 1) either put my bunny "down" or I can 2) have them take a swap of her eyes and have them cut out her eyeball. Then she went back to saying how it would be "useless" for my bunny to live with one eye. Then she went off onto a tangent about how my bunny has cancer. If I could pick NO stars I would. My dog was really sick, and we took her there to be treated. They charged us about $450 for a physical and a bunch of crap like blood work, meds, and two injections. It's been about a week and my dog is NOT GOOD AT ALL.  I called them back trying to see if I could reschedule without having to pay more because we're not made out of money. And they told me they were going to charge me about $800 for a seperate test. ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? Do not waste your time going here because when they called me they didn't even know what was wrong with my dog. All they knew was the her white blood cells were high... I love my dogs, all 3 of them! And I know how expensive their medical care and routine treatments can become. Dr. Hibi knows this. He is one of the most caring and understanding Veterinarians that I have ever had the pleasure to bring my beloved pets to. When my 6 year old smooth-coat doxie had accidentally ingested one of my nicorette lozenges I panicked! I called the ASPCA Poison Hotline and called Amazon Animal Hospital, too. Dr. Hibi told me to bring her in right away, and I did. He performed the necessary procedure to induce vomiting and kept her there for monitoring. I was able to take her home later that day. I was ecstatic! Later though, during the next two days, I noticed that my doxie was breathing noisily and would only stop after I had lifted her little head up (so that she could open up her wind pipe). It was after hours for the Amazon Animal Hospital, so I took her to the Pet ER Specialty Clinic. They had run numerous tests (after I had approved which treatment she should receive) and decided that she had acquired pneumonia (from the treatment she received from Amazon). Pet ER wanted to hold her ($$$$) and run more tests, but I had declined and asked if we could transport her little body to Amazon the following work day. They agreed and I got a hold of Dr. Hibi's staff. They took care of my little Brooklyn and held her for 3 days until she got better! The acquired pneumonia was inevitable, in some cases, for the type of treatment performed on my doxie to induce vomiting. When I picked my Pumpkin up from Amazon, Dr. Hibi didn't charge me any room or board, but only for the medications my Pumpkin needed to get better.I was humbled, because I wanted to blame someone, other than myself. Shame on me! I whole-heartedly would promote Dr. Maxwell Hibi and his caring staff at Amazon Animal Hospital. I showed up today 10/28/16 at about 2:30 and I waited for the receptionist to finish with the customer. So then this lady  behind the desk asked me" how can I help you "and" I stated that my dog need his shots and Her reply was YOU DO  REALIZE  OUR CLINIC IS CLOSED. I stated "I thought your clinic closed at 3 she stated "NO shots are from 9 to 12. If you want your dog to get shots it will be $15 extra for every shot he needs". Ohh ok thank you & I left. I have been taking my pets there for a while and now I don't think I will be returning there because of that lady and her customer service. Have been going to this clinic for over 10 years.  When I needed to get a prescription filled for Prednisone that is keeping my terminal dog alive, they denied it, saying she had not been seen in a year.  THIS IS A TERMINAL DOG THAT IS ONLY BEING KEPT ALIVE BECAUSE OF THE PREDNISONE.  She has extreme bloody diarrhea and will not eat without it.  I am moving to Montana.  They want me to bring her in the midst of all the things I have to do for the move and rape me for one more visit charge, only to get the refill.  What is the point of that?  DO NOT ESTABLISH A RELATIONSHIP WITH THIS VET!!!  TERRIBLE!  CAN'T BELIEVE IT!!! Stay away!!! This place is a complete rip-off. We do not recommend them at all. My husband needed a Health Certificate for our dog to go to Hawaii. This is something that we do several times per year as we live in Hawaii and we know all of the policies and procedures. The office staff here had NO IDEA about the quarantine process for Hawaii and argued with my husband about what we needed. The ONLY thing we needed from them was a Health Certificate and a single application of a flea and tick treatment. At any normal vet, this would run $30-45. This rip off vet insisted that we not only pay for the Health Certificate (Which is AN EXAM!), but also for a separate office visit (another EXAM). Our bill came out to $99.60!! A decent vet with any morals is not going to scam you out of money for an "office exam" on top of a "Health Certificate Exam." Long story short, they charged us for TWO exams - despite only needing the one and getting just one super brief check over to fill in the boxes on the health certificate. We even had every single prior exam and vaccination record with us so that they could verify she was healthy and received routine exams 3-4 times per year (with her most recent being less than 2 months prior). There is no excuse for charging $99 for a simple little appointment that should have taken 15 minutes at most. Instead, my husband was there 90 minutes while staff uneducated in the the quarantine process of OUR state argued with him. Shameful. Be smart - find a vet that does not way overcharge and doesn't think that they know it all when in fact they don't. Read Less

My beautiful dog now 8 years old had been seen by Dr. Hibi since she was 3 months old.She started having epilepsy attacks about 3 years ago and is required to take a blood test every year in order for her to continue her medication. This year i was told she needed a complete blood work and its a huge increase in price!I lost my job last year  and asked if they could check for the medicine only since I can not afford the full blood work, but they declined. I do not want my doggie to be without her meds or she will have epileptic attacks that can lead to her death. I looked desperately for a vet clinic who would work with me so she could continue with her meds. I am very disappointed in Dr. Hibi I truly believed he cared about the animals he sees. Horrible! Do not take your reptile to this vet. Took my bearded dragon there due to lethargic behavior. Dr. finds a cyst in his beard $400 SURGERY needed.  Paid the money and my  animal did not get any better. After 4 more follow up  visits Dr. HIBI finally referred me to a reptile specialist in La Mesa.** I should have gone there in the first place*** as Dr. HIBI said "We will send over your charts so they don't make the same MISTAKES I HAVE"OMG????  Wth?Very dirty and dingy facility.  Didn't look like it's been cleaned in forever. They have a promo where your first visit is free.  We printed out the coupon and my husband headed out to get our puppy checked. We were very impressed with the service and the price, which included an antibiotic shot, take home antibiotic drops, and a no cost follow up visit.We were also looking for a new groomer for our dogs, so we gave Jennifer a try. I used to like bringing my dog here until I started questioning if they were as great as I thought they were based off the actions taken during the last visit. To get my mind off this, I tested out another vet because I didn't feel Dr. Hibi examined my dog the proper way for a "physical" as the ears, teeth, etc weren't checked. Not only that but the medical staff did not know how to deal with my dog. I think the vet assistant who had us the last time we came was new because she didn't seem to know what she was doing and got nervous by my dogs reaction. My dog is very sensitive to touch and is skeptical about being held or any actions that may signal trying to pick the dog up without prior proper introduction. I always remind them ahead of time but this assistant just didn't know how to handle it. After dealing with the assistant, my dog wasn't fond of having Dr. Hibi near so I am not sure if he just decided to skip out of fully examining her. Or maybe it is just not part of the exam at this clinic? I am not sure [but it is at our new one].I heard the assistant and Dr. Hibi talking about my dog once they left the exam room and everything that was said not only confirms the assistant didn't know how to handle my dog but it made me question my trust in Dr. Hibi. (As a note, clients can hear you when you are talking behind the door and we havn't left the exam room.) Rather than agree with what the assistant was sayig perhaps further training the assistant would be more beneficial. The prices are great but my dog actually enjoys the new clinic we are going to so it is worth paying a little more. She walks in relaxed and walks out relaxed. It is really weird. I always thought my dog was just crazy, as the assistant and Dr. Hibi thought.I do have to say that every other time we did come to Amazon Hospital for shots or anal gland expressions we dealt with the same assistant, he has been there for years, and my dog was great with him. I wish I knew his name (shaved head, facial hair, short) but he is someone I would trust my dog too because of our experiences with him. At one time one of the other assistants didn't know how to handle my dog and he walked in to help. He was amazing. If the assistant don't know how to handle a situation, I am glad they ask for help! We are trusting our pets (family) with you. I wish this last assistant we dealt with would have done that and perhaps things wouldn't have gone the path they did. Read Less

I am really disappointed to have to post this negative review. Amazon claims to be a full service pet hospital, as in "standard" and "exotic" pets. Unfortunately, my experience with them leads me to firmly believe otherwise. My son's juvenile bearded dragon developed some kind of issue with it's eyes. It was having trouble eating the insects we were feeding it as it couldn't open them to hunt, but it was active and otherwise normal. After researching the Internet for possible remedies and seeing no improvement, we went to Amazon and Dr. Hibi. Our consultation included the standard questions, some habitat recommendations, no real worry from the doctor and a follow up appointment for a week later...after the two shots, eye ointment and $111 bill. Less than 24 hours later, the poor little critter was dead. I called (on a Sunday) to express my shock and disappointment and left a message asking for a call back as soon as possible. No response. I understand that they may not have received my message...doubtful, since they never called when I missed my follow up appointment. I don't think they are bad people, or that they don't genuinely love animals. I just think that they aren't professional enough to admit a possible mistake or face an upset customer.
