I was very disappointed by the level of veterinary care and customer service I experienced at Chaparral Pet Hospital. I visited this vet on four separate occasions for my dog and cats. Because of the glowing reviews, even after three less-than-stellar appointments, I gave the vet the benefit of the doubt. However, based on my fourth visit, I will absolutely be taking my business elsewhere.
First appointment was with a sick cat. I felt that prices were steeper than I've experienced with previous vets, but I'm new to Southern California, so I chalked it up to change in location. Vet was kind and gentle with my kitty but awkward and difficult to clearly communicate with - I felt like I had to really prod to have basic questions answers and concerns addressed.
Second appointment was for a rash/infection on my dog's stomach. I couldn't take my dog, so I sent my husband. Appreciated that the vet could squeeze us in last-minute (had a well-visit scheduled for the week, but wanted to move up because of the rash). Vet spent very little time with my husband and dog. Rash was barely addressed but, during check-up, vet told my husband my dog had a cracked molar that needed immediate extraction. Did not provide detailed information about procedure and pricing, go over alternative options for treatment, or discuss possible dangers or side effects. Very rude receptionist sent my husband home with rough outline of costs but didn't provide any details about why such a large range of cost. However, both vet and receptionist pushed to schedule procedure immediately. After my husband came home and shared his concerns, I called hoping to have some standard questions answered. Again, receptions was curt, tried to answer medical questions herself instead of having vet call us back with answers or scheduling at time for us to meet, and acted as though speaking with us was somehow an inconvenience for her. Negative attitude only increased when we said would wait to schedule extraction after all questions and concerns were addressed, not before.
Third appointment (only a week following second appointment) was a well-visit for my two cats for yearly check-ups and shots. Again, I felt prices were high (I've never been charged an office visit fee for basic shots and check-up from previous vets, least of all an $85 office visit fee). Vet was fine with cats, but not particularly thorough. Vet tech, however, was extremely rude. He caused my cats unnecessary stress and did not handle them properly - very physical and not at all gentle (which resulted in a nasty scratch for him, I'm sorry to say). Called ahead before appointment to ask if vet could take a few minutes out of cat appointment to discuss lingering concerns about my dog. Vet sighed at us when we mentioned our dog, was pushy, non-communicative, and uninformative.
Ended up scheduling procedure for dog against our better judgement. At the end of the day, the vet realized the diagnosis was a mistake - no cracks or breaks on any teeth. Did the vet call us to let us know she no longer thought the tooth was cracked and ask if we wanted additional confirmation? No. Although this corrected diagnosis could have been made following the teeth cleaning and polishing, vet ordered additional X-rays and blood work without consulting us. Either this vet cannot property diagnose a cracked molar (which should be apparent by sight, at the VERY least following a cleaning and blood work) or she is dishonest and wanted to charge additional money even though the full procedure wasn't necessary. So we paid the cost of a tooth extraction for a glorified teeth cleaning.
I understand good veterinary care can be expensive. As a responsible pet owner, I strive to balance between quality care and affordability. I understand that vets are trained to treat a wide variety of species, that veterinary medicine is not an exact science, and that honest mistakes can and do happen. But, I expect open and honest communication and a friendly vet environment. I did not find those things at Chaparral. Read Less
