I brought my cat here first thing on a Friday morning to be spayed. I thought I'd be able to be present with her, to meet the doctor, until they brought her in to surgery. But it wasn't that way, I just handed her over the counter and they just said they'd call me later. I didn't think much of it at the time and that, that was just procedure. I thought I'd receive a phone call once the surgery was done to let me know my cat was doing fine and when I could pick her up. Finally, at about 4:00pm, I called them and they said I could come pick her up in an hour. When I go to pick up my cat, I figured the doctor would come out and tell me how she did in surgery, but that wasn't the case. I didn't receive an after care sheet or instructions, no pain medication prescription for her, they basically told me nothing. She had staples that would need to be removed and they didn't even schedule a follow-up appointment to do that. So, I get my cat home and I don't really know what I'm supposed to do. She just had major surgery and had external staples on her belly, so I was afraid to even touch her. I didn't even know what she was allowed to do and not do. About 5 days after surgery, I notice that one of the staples looks like it's raised more than the others, like it might come out, but I don't really know. Then the next day, I notice that staple is gone and I know there's no way she's healed yet. So, I call the doctor and tell the girl who answered what happened and she asks me if I want to schedule an appointment. I told her I want her to tell ME if that's what I should do. She told me just to keep an eye on it and if it doesn't get better to schedule an appointment. I asked her about the rest of the staples and when they're supposed to be removed. She said 10-15 days. I asked her if I could just drop in for that and she said no, to make an appointment. We got off the phone with still no appointment made. This took place on a Friday, so as I observed her wound over the weekend, I thought it just didn't look right, so I made an appointment on Tuesday to have the staples removed. I figured I'd be able to go in the room with her this time and I'll tell the doctor what had happened. When I brought her in that Tuesday, I specifically asked to go in with my cat and to speak with the doctor. She said they normally just take the animals back, so again she took my cat without me. I sat down in the lobby and was prepared to wait. She came back and said my cat does have a little infection, so instead of waiting, because the doctor "has other appointments," I could leave and they'll call me to pick her up. So, reluctantly I left my cat there and went home. I live literally five minutes from this hospital and I wasn't home five minutes before they called me to come pick her up. They made such a big deal about me not waiting for her at the hospital and it was no longer than 15 minutes. While waiting there for them to bring me out my cat, I saw two different owners come out from the back with their dogs. These people were allowed to accompany their dogs in the exam room and speak with the doctor, but I was not allowed to. To this day I never got to speak with the doctor directly. I'm convinced they wanted me to completely leave the office and not wait for my cat in the lobby while they removed her staples, because they didn't want me to hear my cat screaming. I purchased a cone from them for $14 to put on my cat's head and the least they could've done was put it on my cat for me. I haven't used it once, because my cat won't let me near her with it and I'm afraid to hurt her if I try and force it. If you're looking for a personable veterinarian who treats your pet like one of it's own, I'd recommend going ELSEWHERE, based on my experience. Read Less

Dr. B is really amazing. When he enters the room he immediately gets down on the ground and starts to pet and comfort the dog. He has a really great touch with the animals he works with, listens to everything you have to say and never makes you feel rushed, which is the best part. i'm really happy with Dover, plus I can walk the dog here! Dover Shores is one of my favorite veterinary clinics around. It's in a run down looking part of Costa Mesa so it looks a little shabby from outside, but once you get inside it's totally different. The office staff are so nice and attentive. I brought my kitten here with a coupon I got in the mail and have gotten her groomed and treated here ever since. After my cat was neutered, she had an allergic reaction to the stitches and Dr. B was so quick and great with removing them and getting her an antibiotic. He's a very mild mannered, laid back kind of guy that truly cares for animals. Read Less

I have been going to Dr. B for quite some time. He was great with our older dog and helped us as he prepared to die. But our younger dog has a skin condition and I have begun to feel that we are just a quick cash cow. After spending over $800 and getting little attention, we are leaving the practice. He was charging too much for visits, for unnecessary tests and when the $80 prescriptions cost us $15 at Costco, that was the last straw. Read Less

Dr. B is a fantastic vet. Very thorough and really helped this doggie parent to understand the finer points of owning an adopted 4.5 pound, 11 year old Chi.  The facility is older, but very clean and the staff very accommodating. I like the grooming products they use and Charlie came back looking and smelling great!  Best of all, I didn't leave feeling ripped off like I have at other vet practices.  I only wish Dr. B could bring back the shelter - Newport doesn't have one anymore and that breaks my heart. Our dog, Bradley, has been going to see Dr. B for many years.  He sits down on the floor with the dogs and takes the time necessary to hear all of your concerns.  His course of action is typically conservative always looking out for what is best for the animal not his pocket book like many vets.I think he is the best in Orange County. AWFUL! This office can't even cure a 'common' UTI for my 13 week old boxer. Keep in mind that common was the word used by Dr. B himself. After spending over $300 on exams, urine and stool analysis and 2 sets of antibiotics over three weeks I was told that my boxer's common UTI must be 'chronic '. I guess that's what they resort to when they cannot fix something so common and basic - call it 'chronic' and have you come in for another exam and pay for more of the same antibiotics and urine tests that don't do anything. Her antibiotics had just ended and right away she was back to urinating every five minutes and in visible discomfort. For all I know she has a worse problem than a UTI and they misdiagnosed her. I called the office after three weeks of this asking for a courtesy exam and they wouldn't even do that. Take her in to be given the same 3 minute exam and the same antibiotics? No way - I feel used enough as it is. I cannot even imagine someone taking their pet here to be operated on. Turn away from this place! Don't waste your time and money! Read Less

I originally came to Dover Shores because I found a ValPack coupon and I'm so glad I did. My new kitten has been to Dr. B two times now. Prices are very reasonable. Dr. B takes his time getting to know both you and your pet. You never feel rushed. His front office staff are very friendly. They also called to follow up a day after our first appointment. Dr. B also personally called with her test results, which was really nice. Added bonus: boarding your pet for one day is only $10! I was going through the valpak coupons and had come across this center that was offering a great deal on exam and shots so I decided to keep it in my wallet and last week, as I was cleaning it out...i found it.  I called in and got an appointment that week.I think they are currently remodeling or painting so it's a bit plain but the staff was extremely nice and the vet was great.  My dog was so scared but the way he handled her and spoke around her really calmed her down a lot.  He asked a lot of background information like how I feed her, her walking, eating habits, etc and he gave me plenty of time to ask questions and talk to him.With the coupon, my dog got a free exam and rabies, corona, dhpp, bordetella, and parvo shot including boosters if needed for 39 dollars.  That's a really really good price.  I'm super glad I saw and found the coupon.  They gave me an estimate for teeth cleaning with a discount as well.  It's steep but I called around and they have the best prices. We recently moved to Newport from Laguna Beach. I needed a local Vet. I checked many on the internet and to my surprise, the reviews for almost all of them were scary bad. I decided to go to Dr B. Our little princess was not herself. Dr B. showed me Xrays and what he thought. He was fair and wise. Went over all pricing before doing anything. Brought our lil' man here for a check up and his shots. Doc B is awesome. He is very caring and spent about 10 mins with our dog - feeling him up (don't even go there!) . The staff nice and helpful. My wife and I just adopted our first dog, Homie, from Dover Shores.  The girl behind the front counter has been very helpful and enthusiastic the past two times I've been to Dover Shores, and I was happy to see that Dr Bruce is very personable and caring towards pets.  I would highly recommend that anyone seeking to adopt a pet stop by the vet/shelter first, because we were able to take Homie home with a microchip, neutered and with his shots for $86.Thank you, to the staff of Dover Shores.  I will be back in a few weeks for Homie's next appointment.
