Love Dr. Joel, but the staff, not so much. 12 weeks ago the Dr had to put down one of my dogs that had cancer. This was done with compassion. This last Thursday 2/23/18 at 5:25 pm I went to have my dog checked out his stomach had twisted. Time was ticking. The front office girl refused me any service because I did not call first. Really? I am so relieved that I first brought my cat here when I got him. He was already 5 years old, and he is now a healthy, ten years old. After a stressful incident (dog attack-my cat won), he developed the sniffles. Then sneezing. Then his eye got red. Then it got really red. One morning his head started swelling and his eye started pushing out! I ran to the vet, asking if there was any advice and to borrow a carrier if I had to bring him in. I have been a client of La Plaza Veterinary Clinic for a few years now. I have been impressed with Dr. Reif's knowledge. He's been very helpful keeping costs down, especially when a few of my pets were very ill. Constant visits to his office etc..... I like the fact he's willing to accept a payment schedule, this has helped us so much. His office staff are helpful and courteous. He is kind and compassionate. Does not "nickel and dime" you so to speak. Answers all of your questions honestly. I wish though that he had after hours boarding. Especially since we have a diabetic cat and another cat that has hyperthyroidism and he knows these animals and their treatment/medication. We've had to leave the diabetic cat with another clinic and the results were horrible. It's hard for us to go on vacation because of this. We have a multi pet household. He has a low cost vaccination clinic every Wednesday from 5:00-7:00 PM And his office hours are convenient, open on Saturdays too. But, only from 9:00 to 1:00 He doesn't actually take veterinary insurance plans but will help with the claims process/paperwork. As well as the fact he doesn't accept CARE credit. I have been bring animals here since I volunteered with Forgotten Felines (over 20 yrs ago), and my animals have always been well cared for and well respected. I trust the Doc to keep my fur-babies best interest at heart and always be honest with me, no matter what I WANT to hear, even if it is to send me to a specialist with "high tech" machines. Great vet. Great price for teeth cleaning: $200.00 flat fee, no matter what size your dog is. How refreshing. You don't get a vague and super expansive fee schedule before your dog goes under. Most vet prices are a minimum of three or four hundred to start, and they're so vague, you could end up paying much, much more.The office is not fancy, but this man isn't out to make a killing on your pets health issues and we are definitely switching vets because this vet isn't a money hungry vampire. Amazing Doctor, Amazing Human. Don't listen to the negative nellies, let them go pay high prices to satisfy there need for a high class waiting room. This is the best Dr in the state, he loves his job, he loves the animals, he doesn't over charge his clients like all the other vets around, this man is doing a great service for all animals. I took my friends dog to her vet (northpark Veterinary) to see why he was scratching his face, and they said he needed 2 teeth pulled and a dental, he just was there 4 months ago for a dental and 1 tooth pulled why didn't they do it all at the same time? $600., now they want $1200. So I told her wait a minute lets think about this. So another friend recommended Dr Reif, we go in there and he says his teeth are fine, no cracks or breaks, he has allergies, gives him some meds sends us on our way $82. BEST VET EVER. Yeah the places needs some fixing up and some primping but I would rather it stay the way it is and the prices affordable. Oh FYI if he had done the dental his price was $550. First of all there are 2 sides to every story, and some people are not very good pet owners, they make their own pets neurotic and give them anxiety. I am a dog Trainer and rehabilitate them after there owners have made them this way. I have been doing this for more than 30years.  Also, you dont need a 5 star waiting room as long as the Dr's care is 10 Stars, and thats what you get here.Dr Reif and his staff take excellent care of the animals entrusted to them. I wish I had met him 20  years ago. Other vets in the area (VCA clinics) like to rack up the bill, they wanted to charge my friend $60 for a bottle of shampoo we got on Amazon for $25, and $1200 for a dental that the dog didn't even need, when they just did a dental on the same dog 4months ago and probably pulled a tooth that didn't need pulling. That bill was $600. Dr Rief was recommended by one of my clients, and I am so glad, he greeted us briefly and went straight to introducing himself to her dog and letting him know he was a friend there to help him. The animal is the one that needs to feel the love not us, were not the patient, He said her little dog had allergies and didn't need a dental, after a complete check up from nose to tail we were out the door with visit, meds, and loving care for only $82. You dont judge a Dr by his staff, I dont care about the staff, the Dr should love his job and really care about his patients, and thats what you get here, and if the staff happen to be great, ( that was the case when we went in) then thats just whip cream and nuts on top( I dont like those ice cream cherries) Great Vet, Awesome Human, We love this place. This used to be my regular vet so I was really disappointed to get such terrible customer service when I called today! I just moved back to the area and called to make an appointment for our puppy to get spayed. I had been calling around to different vets and getting info in regards to exactly what was covered (exam, labs, IV, hospitalization, etc). I asked the girl who answered the phone what was included in the cost and she was rude and abrupt. She snapped back and said, 'Um spaying is included.' She didn't explain anything about what they do there when I asked. I asked what potential complications could occur and she said there were none. Really? From a hysterectomy for a puppy? Not infection, bleeding, etc? I understand that it's routine but it's still surgery. I asked to speak with a vet or someone to answer my questions. She said the vet was in surgery and no one would be able to call me back. From my past experience with this vet I would say it's too bad that they've hired staff with such terrible customer service skills. I will definitely not be trusting them with my pet!! Read Less

I came here to get a second opinion after going somewhere else and being told it would cost $2000 to remove half of my cats teeth (he had a dental disease and needed them all to be removed)La Plaza told me that it would be no more than $800 for his ENTIRE mouth. It ended up being under $600!! Way better than the $4000 it would have been at the other place. Dr. Joel ...... Amazing,  we've been his client for for almost 18 years. We first met when we brought in our kitten Anastasia. We recently had to put down statsia. I took my terrier here and they were absolutely terrible with him. He was a quivering mass of fear after his appointment, I have NEVER seen anything like it. I will never go back here. I have been coming to La Plaza Veterinarian Clinic for 15 years and have had 2 dogs that lived to 17 years old under Dr. Reif care. Our Pom had diabetes for the last 3 years of her life and not only did Dr. Reif keep her comfortable and happy he did not run unnecessary tests and made it very affordable to keep our dog in her twilight years. Our Bella also lived to 17 she was a german short haired pointed. During her last 2 years when she had pain with walking he put her on Metacam when I brought her in I thought she had to be put down instead he made her comfortable and happy for another 2 years. He took us through the deaths of these two family members and we now have a 3 year old Yorkie. He makes animal care affordable by not running unnecessary tests like when we thought Bella had cushmans ( not sure of the spelling) when she was 14 he said diagnosing is very expensive and the treatment is worse if she were my dog I would enjoy the time she has left. I took my dogs here to be spayed and nuetered as well as get their booster and rabies shots. I went to this clinic because they were cheap. I explianed to the Vet Tech that this was the first time I had a puppy and this was all very new to me. After the procedure I asked them if they needed medication and they said NO. Ok fine, no big. I asked them if they got thier shots, and they said YES! I asked what limitation they should have from their visit and the only thing I was told was no exercise for one week. Well I was not aware that they are supposed to get 2 more sets of booster shots or that they are NOT supposed to go to places where other animals have been until they get all of their shots. This was three weeks ago. I had to put my puppy to sleep today. After he was recovered from his surgery we took him to the dog park where he contracted Parvo and Distemper. He suffered for three days and it could have all been prevented if they had done their jobs and properly informed their clients. Not to mention I now have a 1600.00 dollar medical bill!
