After much searching we found Dana Niguel Veterinary Hospital.  Our pet sitter recommended them after we had had negative experiences with other veterinary hospitals.  Our cat was very feisty and hated going to the vet but that did not dissuade Dr. Johnson and his wonderful staff.  His vet techs are amazing. You can tell that the staff here really loves animals and do what they do because they really care.  It's clearly a calling for them. They do excellent work determining the right diagnosis and treatment.  I give them my highest recommendation and five stars is not enough to express my high regard for both their expert skills and their true compassion and respect for us and our beloved cat.  This is a rare combination. In 2015 I adopted a sweet 8 year old orange tabby Maine coon mix and didn't realize this poor guy was so sick. After trying out several vets (Banfield, South Coast, Urgent Cares etc...) while slowly figuring out that my kitty was sick, my good friend, Heather, recommended Dana Niguel vet hospital. I am so glad to  have Dr. Johnson work with my Teddy Bear. He was so very kind and gentle and very empathetic to our situation. He and his staff genuinely care for every patient and try to work with  your particular situation. They want what's best for your pet and are honest about the possibilities, fair in their pricing while maintaining an outstanding respectful attitude. As time progressed, I found out my Teddy Bear had a cancerous tumor that was very aggressive. Pain management was deemed the only option, so I decided to take him to a cancer specialist center in Tustin to see if there was anything else I could do. While the cancer center was able to provide me with an easier/cheaper pain management medication, the quality of service greatly diminished over time and I became very disappointed in their lack of care for my Teddy. After a while, it felt like they just wanted me to come in every other week, which gets very expensive. I felt like I was losing hope for Teddy's pain management until I called Dana Niguel, once again, to get their recommendations. Josh heard my situation and knew right away that this cancer hospital was not being fair or had real care for my Teddy. So he helped me in the best possible way and I'm so thankful for him, all of doctors and staff for all of their love and support! This has been a very emotional time for me and I'm so glad that I was able to re-connect to this awesome group that fully supports my sweet Teddy Bear. Read Less

We first met Gary Johnson in August of 1984 when we moved to Dana Point. He's always cared for our pets - we are on our fourth dog now, a beautiful little rescue Poochon named Pippin. I wouldn't take her anywhere else. Gary is so intuitive and "one with the dog" and has a gentle bedside manner. We had to put my Teacup Maltese down a few years ago, and I couldn't imagine going through that with anyone but Gary and his caring staff. Pippin was attached by a pit bull last week, and she loves Gary as well because he liberated her from her cone which was installed by the animal emergency center (who are equally wonderful!). Met the staff at the Dana point Wagathon booth and couldn't be more happy about my decision on taking my dog here. As being part of the pet industry as well as working at several veterinarian hospitals I'm gonna have to say this is the best place for your pet. I was very impressed with the staff, vibe, and cleanliness of the place. Dr. Johnson was awesome and really took his time to get to know my Zoee & I. Also the front desk staff was really friendly and welcoming. I took my dog to have his ears cleaned and Dr. Spongberg said he wouldn't hear for 10 days. My wonderful dog is now totally deaf and strangely Dr. Spongberg no longer works there. We moved to Dana Point a month ago with our 2 pups and it wasn't long before they needed vaccinations and veterinarian care. I looked up all of the possibilities in the area and settle upon this place. I am so glad I did. The staff of knowledgeable, friendly and genuinely likes animals. The attention to detail was way better than average. The locations also super, super clean and if you didn't know it was a veterinarian office you would swear it was a normal Doctors office. The only place I will take my dog.  They know their stuff and are so professional.  I went to another vet that had been recommended by my trainer and for 6 months he mis-diagnosed the issue with my dog who wasn't getting better.  I finally decided to get a second opinion and Dr. Johnson told me he didn't think it was the problem I had been getting treatment for - and he was right!  My dog needed surgery and he wasn't sure he was still young enough for it.  Fortunately he was, an orthopedist came in 3 days later and now my dog is pain/limp free and great.  Bosley is now a patient here for the rest of his life (which I know will be a long and healthy one!). I have been taking my 3 dogs to Dana Niguel Veterinary Hospital for the past 10 years. The staff are very helpful and pleasant. I've been going to Dr. Johnson since the late 70s with my pets. The care I've received over the years, for several dogs I've owned, has been marvelous. He'll call you personally when there's a problem or to follow-up after a serious visit. I love Josh, one of Dr Johnson's techs, and Megyn plus the entire staff is friendly and always helpful. DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT take your animal to this vet. the only thing they care about is money. my dog showed signs of spinal or hip injury and was having a difficult time walking. i had to work so a friend took my dog to see dr. johnson.  i finished work at 5:45 that evening and called right away knowing they closed at 6:00. i was put on hold and told the doctor was unavailable as was the assistant who helped him.  i was asked to call the next day. in the mean time i called my friend to ask the diagnosis. he explained to me that pain meds were prescribed and i should call to talk with the doctor the next day. i called 4 times the next day and again was placed on hold. the second time i was asked by anna to submit my credit card over the phone before i talked to the doctor... really?? was my dogs chart being held hostage for payment??? i explained i was driving at the time and would have to call back in with the number. she asked me if i could pull my car over and read her my cc number!!!i called back later during the day and again was placed on hold, again no doctor.i don't make it a habit to pay for services that have not been rendered. at this point the only  thing i had was 2 prescriptions and still no clue what was going on with my dog. i was called the next day by josh, who informed me he was the office manager and if i did not remit payment i would be turned over to a collection agency. i explained to josh i had called repeatedly to speak with the doctor and he told me i would not be talking to the doctor until i paid?! josh then hung up on me?!i have been using this vet for 5 years. i am the owner of 2 dogs. i am a homeowner in dana point as well as a yoga teacher. i PAY my bills. i have never been treated so rudely ever by an office staff. I've been taking our pets to DNVH for many years. I've always felt that they were really interested in the well being of my pets. I've had to take an older cat to be put down. They handled it with care and concern for both of us. Never felt there was a rush and they treated the situation with respect for my feelings and care for the comfort of the cat. I hate that I had to leave 1 star here.  The only people in the office that were nice were the 2 girls at the front desk.  I took my cat here because she had lost a bit of weight and was meowing quite a bit.  Dr. Johnson charged me nearly $400 for a blood and urine test.  He was unable to complete the urine test because my cat had gone to the bathroom.  Wouldn't it make sense not to charge me for a test that couldn't be performed?  He called the next day to inform me that my cat was going to die with liver failure.  To slow the process, he would have 3 medications (absurdly expensive) waiting for me to pick up.  I skipped the meds and began giving my cat milk thistle daily (which was $11 @ whole foods).  She has gained weight and seems to be doing great.  1 year later and my cat is completely healed!*12/3/14 - my cat is still alive and healthy!*4/15/16 - My cat is still alive and healthy!
