Today was my first visit to Acorn Veterinary Clinic, and I couldn't be more pleased! As a cat-crazy lady, I really appreciated that the waiting areas are separated by dogs/cats. Better yet, there are separate entrances for each! I was greeted my Kendra, who is very sweet, and has great manner over the phone as well. Since it was my first visit, I did not request a specific veterinarian, but was incredibly lucky to get an appointment with Dr. Jackman. Wow! She has an incredible bedside manner, is lovely to talk with, and fawned over my kitty (which I loved)! My cat was just about as relaxed as a cat could get at a veterinary clinic. She was very knowledgeable, and went over every aspect of his health with me. I aspire to be a veterinarian, and I really appreciated this! I am so happy we decided to get established with Acorn! We love Acorn! We have a turtle. A turtle we did not want to adopt...we were happy not having pets. But we take good care of her and of course she's grown on us. When she got sick it was very stressful and as you can imagine, not all vets have turtle experience. Acorn was awesome from the first call. They took a lot of time with me on the phone, they let me make an appointment they knew I might not keep (if she laid eggs and got better, there would be no reason to go in), and they even called back with a tip for an emergency doctor just in case things got worse before the appointment. At the actual appointment we were greeted warmly and quickly by the receptionists. The vet tech took us back right on time. Everyone there is SO nice. The vet tech was great. Then Dr. Nixon came in (also on time). She was super kind, obviously knew a lot about turtles, and talked us through our worry and garbled answers. :) She gave us several options and didn't push us for anything expensive. I moved to Davis last summer, and brought my dog in to Acorn for her annual checkup. The place is a bit cramped, and I felt like the veterinary care was a little hurried.  I brought her in again recently for an ear infection.  My old vet in Sacramento would flush out the ear to be sure the medicine would cure the infection, but here the vet just commented on how dirty it was, and gave me an ointment. She said if it doesn't work, bring her back and we'll test her ear to see what the bug is.  Why not do that first?  I'm really having a hard time cleaning her ear at home, and it seems to me that $95 would at least be enough to warrant an ear flushing because they know patients don't have the right tools to do it at home. I'm probably just going to take her back to my vet at Sacramento Animal Hospital, and end up spending more money that I can barely afford. Read Less

The veterinarians and vet techs here are wonderful! You can tell they all have experience with variety of pets. I have a Netherland dwarf named Hermes, and I've been bringing him here for the past three years for his annual check up. If you have a rabbit too, it will cost around $57, and they give student discounts too! So my total was about $51. The vet even helps me cut Hermes' nails because he is often fussy when I cut them at home. The vet always manages to get it done quick. The office is clean, staff is nice. I have seen dogs and cats in the waiting room too. They split small animals and cats on one door and large animals on another door, which is on the opposite side of the front desk. I think it is nice how they separate animals that way so the little animals don't get scared by the big ones in the waiting room haha! I brought my rabbit here, after reading the positive reviews from other rabbit owners, only to have one of the worst vet visits. I wasn't acknowledged upon arrival. I called on a Friday afternoon and they were able to fit me in with an appointment in less than half an hour.  Everyone at the clinic was kind and helpful and the vet tech was great.  Dr. Nixon took the time to answer all my questions about my cat and talked through different options for me.  I left my cat for a few hours while they waited for a urine sample, and felt confident he was in good hands.  I was able to pick him up immediately after they'd gotten urine, and despite it being a fairly busy Friday evening, the entire process was quite quick.  I was called promptly the next morning when his urine culture came back and they had a prescription ready for pick up almost immediately.  I greatly appreciated being able to speak with the vet again in the morning (both on the phone and when I arrived in the office to pick up my prescription).  Prices were very reasonable and I'm glad my cat is already feeling much better! I don't write many reviews but I feel compelled to post one for Acorn Veterinary Clinic. First off, they give UC Davis students discounts! Second, they show you a full invoice of the costs before you choose the vaccinations/treatment you would like administrated on your pet. The veterinarian also only recommends what is necessary. There is no up-selling, just honest advice from what I perceived as a very competent professional. The prices are much cheaper than where I am from, Marin County. The staff was an absolute delight to deal with, including the receptionist to the tech and the veterinarian. Glad I found this place! Read Less

Called this morning and was able to get a same day appointment, which was really amazing!  Got to my appointment and it was obviously a very very busy Monday morning and it took a while for the staff to greet me and let me know it would be a minute. They checked in my Bengal cat and I and a couple minutes later showed us to an exam room. I expected a much longer wait given how busy it was so was pleasantly surprised. We were first seen by a very nice and professional vet tech who took my little boy's history and weight. Dr. Joy Jackman came in as we were finishing and looked over my little boy. She was so kind and gentle with him and was also easy to talk to and clearly very experienced with scared cats. She was willing to talk to me about all her recommendations and tried to comfort me since I was obviously very worried. She said they would get to the bottom of what was going on with my cat and I believed her. Even though they were busy I never felt like she was rushing the appointment and she seemed happy to talk with me about all my concerns. Overall super glad I brought my little boy to Acorn to see Dr, Jackman. Read Less

Simply the best. My friend helped me find this little clinic for me when I suspected that my guinea pig was sick and was dry heaving a couple of times a day for a few days. This was my first time going to a veterinary clinic and I had absolutely no idea what to expect. When I called to make an appointment, the receptionist was extremely nice, thorough, and patient. If I can recall correctly, they were able to book me in for an appointment the following day or two. That day I saw Dr. Jackman. She is an angel on Earth. She was so kind, knowledgeable, answered all of my questions (trust me, I had a million of them), was very professional, yet easy to talk to, and sought out the best options for me financially. She gave me a ton of advice and even gave me an e-mail so that I could send them a clip of my guinea pig's dry heaving if I could ever catch her in the act so that she and the staff could learn more about it and give me more advice on what we could do if the conditions worsened. I called the next day to update Dr. Jackman on how my guinea pig was doing, she gave me more advice and told me to call her if anything else happened, and to check in on how Daisy (my guinea pig) was doing after she took her antibiotics for 10 days. The nurse/assistant there was also fantastic! She was funny and I can easily tell that the veterinarians here REALLY love and care about animals. They were all so gentle with my guinea pig even though she is a feisty and nippy one. Nonetheless, my guinea pig received many compliments that day! Lastly, I just wanted to mention that Dr. Jackman and her assistant/nurse was helpful down to the very last second of our appointment. I did not feel rushed, they gave me advice not only about how to care for my sick guinea pig, but also recommended quality brand, nutritious guinea pig pellets for us to use. Additionally, she gave me worksheets on what the best foods are to give to my guinea pig and provided tips on what kind of bedding I can use besides the newpaper crumble kind. Read Less

I agree with Yelper one-cent L. about Dr.Joy Jackman being a great veternarian as well as having awesome bedside manners with the animal owner (compared to the cold workers at Midtown clinic Davis).I came here in the beginning of June 2014 on a last minute emergency call for my cat who was lethargic and hiding/laying under a bush. I called Acorn at 915am and the symphathetic receptionist was able to get me in ASAP on the same day...so I agreed to come in at 1140am.I was given paper work to fill out at the busy front desk and was helped by Elizabeth. The front desk staff apologized that my appt time was not met at 11:40am but that didn't matter to me, my cat was not eating/drinking anything.Although my cat and I was not seen until 12:15pm by the veternarian assistant Nicole and Dr.Jackman...I was SO HAPPY that they were very nice, explained everything that could be wrong with my sick cat, and made recommendations on what they can do.I agreed with Dr.Jackman ($49 office call) to have blood work done aka viral panel ($156) on my cat and to give him antibiotic clavamox 16 tablets ($26.50).Overall, a great staff with a small town veterinary clinic feel.Reasonable prices and excellent customer service. Two thumbs up!!!! :-) Read Less

My family has been a customer of Acorn Veterinary Clinic in Davis for over 20 years now. Acorn vets have cared for all of our pets from guinea pigs to dogs. Throughout the years, the range of veterinary services that they have provided to my family's pets has ranged from well-puppy visits to dealing with a major illness. We absolutely love this practice and especially the vets and techs. These are highly competent and very caring vets, and their staff is equally competent and caring.  I have not seen a more well-run or more caring veterinary practice. I HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend Acorn! Read Less

I brought my rabbit here, after reading the positive reviews from other rabbit owners, only to have one of the worst vet visits. I wasn't acknowledged upon arrival. And the veterinarian did NOTHING for my rabbit, barely even looked at her. All she did was try to persuade me to euthanize my rabbit by assuring me they would be very comforting! Very disappointing. So if your pet gets sick just put it down and get another..?! F**k that. Read Less
