It's with great sadness that I write this review, because I feel that I did my sick cat a great disservice by not taking her immediately to UCD Small Animal Clinic on the UCD campus instead of here. I contacted UCD Clinic first, and they were booked, but said they could fit my cat in if I took her through emergency and paid the $225 fee to expedite the visit. Unfortunately, I took her to Davis Small Animal Hospital instead, thinking she would probably receive the same kind of care, which I found out quite soon was not at all the case. I did end up taking my cat to UCD anyway two weeks later for oncology consultation, and the level of care and delivery of care is far superior, not only in terms of care for the animal, which is crucial, but also in how they treat the pet owner in terms of feedback, instructions, follow-up support and availability, and even in terms of small things like coffee and magazines in the waiting rooms. The equipment at UCD is much more modern, the level of communication is far superior, the test results are same-day, all medications (on the spot and to take home) are provided right there and the same day, all results and recommendations are provided on a detailed printout, the follow-up care is amazing, and the prices for services are not overly expensive. Many of the other pet owners I spoke to in the waiting room routinely take their animals to UCD Davis for all care, not just illnesses. All the frustrations and back-and-forth testing (and waiting a day to be able to get medication from a different place in Davis they send you to - and longer if it's the weekend) at Davis Small Animal Hospital over a two-week period could have been completely avoided if I had gone to UCD and had all the tests done in one day, with results in one day, and medications, feedback, and recommendations given to me right there. At Davis Small Animal Hospital, my experience over a two-week period was that the care for my cat and the communication with me was very unsatisfactory; the vet (Edson) did not detect an obvious mass in the abdomen on first examination (the radiologist (Long) noticed it just by sight days later when the cat was on her back, otherwise we would have not known that was one of main problems my cat was suffering from); I was told by the receptionist (Fran) that the vet didn't call me back when she said she would because "she was busy and has other clients"; feedback and patient summary was not done by printout but by phone calls from the vet (sometimes as late as 8:30 pm); medication had to be picked up a day later at Davis Compounding Solutions in a different part of Davis (also not open on weekends or Mondays); my repeated requests to have my cats nails cut were ignored. In terms of just general safety, you may find pee on the floor at the front door, so be careful when you walk in. The waiting room and examining rooms were very cold (in stark contrast to the warm rooms at UCD). The x-ray reviewing machine and the facilities have seen better days.In my opinion, Davis Small Animal Hospital is probably fine for vaccinations and routine checkups, but if your animal is ill or you suspect illness, I would strongly recommend you pay the $225 expedited fee at UCD Small Animal Clinic if they are booked but you need to get in soon. You won't regret it. Even for routine care, I'd recommend you book early and do your pet and yourself a huge favor and go to UCD Small Animal Clinic. UCD is only a five-minute drive away, but a world apart in terms of superior care and communication. Also it's important to note that this is *NOT* the UCD School of Veterinary Medicine Small Animal Clinic. This place is called Davis Small Animal Hospital, and it's only open only on weekdays, not on weekends and not after hours, so "hospital" is misleading. If you have an emergency, you'll have to go to UCD anyway. Read Less
