They do amazing work with rescue dogs through Hand in Paw.  We had our dog checked out and fixed by them before adoption.  I keep reading wonderful stories like this one.  They really have heart.  "When she was found in Bakersfield, hit by a car, and left in a ditch, she was given a very grim prognosis, with zero chance of recovery, and was literally moments from euthanasia. But Brandi and I didn't want to give up. It has been a few months, and a lot of work, but it looks like Jewel is a walking miracle, beating all the odds. It couldn't happen to a sweeter, more deserving girl. I am so lucky and grateful to work with Dr. Z and his staff. Even though Doc didn't have much hope upon seeing her original x-ray, he still wanted to give it a shot, and it has all been so worth it.  " Read Less

My family has been coming her for a long time. I've just recently got a new apartment and needed to get my kittens vaccinations. The staff was friendly and very helpful and made myself and my little psychotic kitten were comfortable and well taken care of. However, there was just one staff member who just didn't seem she wanted to be there. After I received my kitten back from the blood work, she handed me the kitten and gave me the results quickly and left the room without ever telling me she had gotten her shots after her blood work was taken care of. Instead I was left in the room unaware she was done with her visit and waiting for the doc. Thankfully, one of the gals up front spotted me and gave me the update i never received from the gal who handed me back my kitten. But I won't let that ruin my experience here. They've taken care of every pet my family has owned and I trust them. I'll be bringing back my kitten as well as my pups in the future. Thanks for taking care of my little furry family guys!Read Less

I feel so fortunate we found Duarte Azusa Animal Hospital.  We took our elderly, diabetic cat there following an insulin reaction because I was so displeased with our previous vet, and Dr. Z and staff couldn't have been more helpful, caring, or professional.  Together, we took that cat through his final days compassionately and humanely.  More recently, my sister moved into the area and the doctor has seen her dogs for a variety of problems from ear infections to allergies, and our new rescue kitty came to us with a bad abscess that needed treatment.  The doctor and staff are so knowledgeable, but also have a clear love for animals, which I've had a hard time finding recently in veterinary medicine.  No one ever tries to "sell" us on "upgrades" or unnecessary treatments.  The doctor explains everything that needs to be done and provides thorough instruction for any aftercare that is needed.  Our animals are healthy and happy thanks to the doctor and staff at Duarte Azusa Animal Hospital -- what higher recommendation is there that healthy, happy animals? Were to begin! We have used Dr Z for many years. We have three rescues that we love and take very good care of. Lets start, the heart retching part of this, we our oldest rescue in after she had fallen and wasn't getting around well. Dr Z did some test on her in the room and could not pin point anything. He suggested that we run blood work and x-rays. We agreed to do that and waited while that was done. Still nothing, maybe a she had stroke or seizure. The test were not clear. Dr Z at that point suggested that we leave her over the weekend so they could watch her. So I said, "will someone be here if something were to happen?" His response was no, but she will be fine. I want to put her on an IV and watch to see how she does.  NO, we are taking her home. I will NOT leave her unattended. You can do the IV during the day, and one of us will pick her up in the afternoons. Her treatment was IV's and a seizure medication that made it where she could hardly walk. After two weeks of this we decided she was having no quality of life. Did our research on the drugs Dr Z had put her on and followed the instructions of winging her off them. Once she was taking a very low dose she was back to herself for about a month. Ultimately we lost her. Still six months later the pain is deep. We feel Dr Z misdiagnosed her causing her death. When I called Dr Z office to inform them she had pasted I was informed by Dr Z "I wanted to make her comfortable for the time she had left". Taking her quality of life away was WRONG!I went in to pickup 30 days of medicine for my dog, instead of 60 days I requested 30 days and a month of Next Guard. When the RUDE fat guy behind the counter gave me the balance, I asked why was it so high? He gave me the breakdown, the scripted was almost $75 for 30 days. Now keep in mind 60 days is $130. He continued to say after me asking, why is the script was so high, "that is what Dr Z said to charge you". So I, asked to speak with Dr Z. When Dr Z came out he said that the extra cost was for "packaging - bottle and label". Seriously, I'm already paying $62 for the script. Never the less I paid it but not without mumbling to myself it is time to find another vet. Next thing I hear is the RUDE fat guy behind the counter say "we can forward your records where ever you choose. The price is what it is." I looked up at him and stated "was I speaking to you? NO. Keep your mouth shut and do not speak to me in that tone. I have spent a lot of money here over the years and to be charged a packaging fee because I did not want 60 days worth of medication is BS."WE will not be going back or referring anyone to Dr Z or Duarte Animal Hospital. Some of the staff are okay others need to find a new profession. Dr Z, do not respond to this your words are worthless and mean nothing, the almighty dollar means way more to you. Read Less

My family and I started coming to Dr. Z as he also cares for Rabbits, that was over 8 years ago. Dr. Z is the one of the most knowledgable vets I have ever been to. He really cares about the animals he works with and does everything he can to help, even when your animal has a frustrating disease. I now have cats and one of my special kitties has stomatitis which is a very persistent and frustrating dental disease. Dr. Z has even spent time researching brand new methods and ways to treat this disease and my little kitty is still with me.Dr. Z and his staff are both very friendly and really care about your pets and you. They'll take the extra time to explain things to you and all have knowledgable experience with animals. Sometimes they are very busy, especially Saturdays, but If you stick around they will be happy to explain things further to you. ALSO! If your animal has an emergency and it is during their normal business hours they will tell you to come in right away. I love that, it saved my kitty's life. The prices are very reasonable. If I can say anything, definitely don't skip the bloodwork and xrays even if you think it is expensive or annoying. Animals can't tell us what is wrong but bloodwork and x-rays can tell us a lot more than just a simple checkup. Dr. Z has never misdiagnosed or wasted me money due to this process and I would never have it any other way.Thank you so much Dr. Z and staff! Read Less

This place (and the doctor is an insensitive joke to say the least) in terms I would put, allowed my dog to die. My "baby" was brought a few days before New Years Wknd a few years back b/c she wasn't eating or drinking & she had became jaundiced after a couple of days there. The Assistant noticed it not the doctor. I was told that they'd get back to me & that they had someone who would be checking on them over the weekend. Instead the girl "blew off" her rounds to 'enjoy the Holiday' and my baby hemorrhaged. To top it off, they waited till they had cleaned off all the blood (this missed some spots) before calling me so when I arrived she was stiff & cold with her fur still wet. The Assistant hid out in the back room while the doctor tried to say he had cameras at home to keep an eye on them (what crap); that's when I asked then how he could miss my dog & why he didn't call me to see her if she was so bad ... He told me "why she would have died sooner" if you did. I've never went back & tell everyone I know & meet to choose another Vet or they may be collecting their pet's remains laterBy the way; my prior review and 2 others who had the same experience reviews have mysteriously disappeared Read Less

I found this place through a friend because she said that her parents knew Dr Z personally and that they do an exceptional job at an affordable price. I couldn't agree more. My shiba, Leo, unfortunately got hit by a car while on a walk with my mom. He ended up with a broken leg that lost all nerve. He was no longer able to walk with it and it just seemed like more of a bother to him as the months went on. So I decided to get some opinions from a couple of veterinarians. All have said the same, that it would be best to amputate his leg and he will heal and be happy once again. By this time, my dog became depressed and refused to eat and was losing a lot of weight. So any advice from the vets were good by me. Not only was Dr Z the most affordable, he was also very caring and comforting while diagnosing my dog. He gave me the reassurance that I needed to feel comfortable leaving my baby with him while his physicians took care of his amputation. They kept Leo at the hospital overnight for monitoring and when I came to pick him up the next day, he was so much more happy. It seemed like he was finally free from his pain and he can be on his way to becoming a normal dog again. Three and a half years later and Leo is still just as happy and healthy. I can't thank Dr Z and his staff enough for caring for Leo and their expertise. I have not gone anywhere else and I don't plan to anytime soon. Read Less

We're new to Azusa, having just moved over from Pasadena. We've had pets for decades and therefore plenty of experience with veterinarians. We bought our older dog in for a diagnosis. No, this isn't a luxury Beverly Hills establishment, with free espresso, bagels, and everyone wearing the latest in trendy uniform fashion. In fact, it has more of a Mayberry small town ambiance. The doctor was a great listener and gave us an estimated bill that would have been three times as much as the big chain place in Pasadena. It's been our experience that too many pet owners have unrealistic expectations. THIS IS A LITTLE LONG, but PLEASE READ AND BEWARE!!! If they had 0 stars I would have to rate this hospital and Dr. Z a negative 0. I had used Dr. Z and his outside so-called surgeon specialist for orthopedic surgeries about 10 years ago for my lab and I never had a problem, BUT years later things have really changed. I don't even know where to begin as my very recent experience here has been a true nightmare and mostly a nightmare for my suffering rescue dog I tried to put at the best hands and care of. Dr. Z is NOT cheap at all and that's not even the gripe I have if the overall surgery and aftercare had been good, it wasn't even adequate... My rescue dog needed an amputation after the first determination of Cecil needing an ACL repair of the knee, Dr. Z determined once they opened his leg up that there was a mass and a biopsy was recommended. I agreed to the surgery of having my rescue dog's leg amputated as Dr. Z recommended this was the best results for him living a pain-free life. When I picked up my rescue lab from this hospital, I was so horrified to see the surgical site extremely swollen with blood dripping out of the surgical site... I knew this was NOT normal.. Dr. Z was harsh and abrasive when I showed my concern for poor Cecil who had gone through so much already... He harshly replied with, "just leave him here you can't handle him"... he meant I couldn't handle the infection they had already caused as he had been in their care since the amputation on Sept. 1st and 5 days later I was degraded with harsh talk and was NEVER given a proper discharge instructions. Of course I did NOT choose to leave my dog there, it was the weekend of Labor Day their office hours on Sat. are only until 2pm, and they would be closed throughout the long weekend. I asked who would be caring for him during this time... "there is someone who comes in only from 8am-12 to check on the dogs boarding".... My heart sank as I knew his surgery site was infected already! I asked for my records and took my dog home only to have to rush him into emergency as his surture site was still oozing with blood and liquid that was not normal... and you don't have to be a professional to notice that there was something completely wrong with it. I had paid a total of $3,000 for this BUTCHER to do this to my poor rescue lab Cecil. I ended up having to pay an additional $3,150 to the 24hour emergency Vet where it was determined he had a staph infection and aggressive antibiotic therapy and debrailing (where they aggressively clean the area until the dead skin shows improvement), in addition to resurturing the site, Cecil had to spend a week in 24hour care. I feel guilty because I took my rescue dog to Duarte-Azusa Animal Hospital, Dr. Z and his ortho surgeons and staff there. I trusted them to take the very best care of my rescue dog and this is the treatment I received. It's shocking and horrifying that there are heartless so-called professionals out there that are solely in it for the money and have no consideration for your actual pet. This is one place to STAY AWAY from completely. Disgusting all around with blow-up charges as well as HORRIBLE care. Way to go, Duarte-Azusa Animal Hospital! Thanks to the bait-and-switch I experienced this morning, I will no longer waste even a minute of your or my time for any future dealings with your facility and my dollars will be better spent at more professional animal care facilities.Last Saturday (11/22/14), I stopped by Duarte-Azusa Animal Hospital to inquire about getting my cat  spayed and I was told by the young woman at the front desk that it would be $112 to have her spayed and that it would be around $120 total if they needed to give her any antibiotics. There was also a mention that it was free to get her microchipped.Fine. I thought, "that works for me, I can take the cat to the vet on my way into work". I made an appointment for her for 8:00 AM today (Monday) and today when I (we) showed up for the appointment, the cost had magically grown over the weekend to $300-something dollars. When I asked how it grew to that total from $112, the front desk woman (different from the one I spoke to on Saturday) said, "I don't know who told you it would be $112, the cost of the procedure alone is $170". The young woman who had told me it would be $112 was sitting right there, but because she was talking on the phone I did not put her on blast and ask, "Do you remember telling me just two days ago that it would be $112 to spay my cat?". I thanked them for wasting my time, hastily returned home with my cat so that I could drop her off with some food (since they asked me not to feed her prior to her appointment) and I had just enough time to get to work on time.So back to square one. Thanks, Duarte-Azusa Animal Hospital for your spectacular failure to keep a patron. Your services are no longer needed. On that note, I would like to thank Dali at the Pasadena Humane Society who arranged for a $65.00 spay for my cat. Read Less

I have neither a cat or dog but a Silkie pet hen examined by Dr. Z twice in 6 months. On her first exam Dr. was thorough in examining every orifice of her little body, her skin, her tiny comb, ear lobes, feet, toes, etc. I was satisfied that he knew about chickens quite well. His recommendations agreed with my limited knowledge about chicken health. The second visit she was suffering from labored noisy breathing and I was able to get in immediately. Dr Z, his assistant, and I held the little 2 lb hen still so he could see into her little trachea to determine if there was any obstruction or parasite. She was not treated with antibiotic injection until he ruled out the unrelated ailments. I was very happy with his diagnosis, treatment, feeding recommendations, and that I was given an antibiotic-type powder to mix in her drinking water at home. By evening her labored breathing had calmed down considerably. My error I forgot to confirm how long to administer the drinking powder so will call back in the morning to get a timeline. One assistant said Dr likes chickens and would love to have some himself. Don't know if the assistant said it to make me smile but the little Silkie DID draw much attention from staff and patients! Backyard chicken owners can take preventative health care to a certain point but when serious issues arise, don't hesitate to seek out veterinary help for your chicken just as you would for your dog or cat! I have been taking my dogs and my 22 year old cat to Dr. Z for years and I wouldn't go anywhere else. He and his staff are wonderful, polite and competent, things you don't find in most businesses anywhere these days, let alone a full-service animal hospital like Dr. Z's. Everyone is like family there. I don't think people realize that veternarians have to learn about the human body, as well as .... how many different varieties of animals from ounces to thousands of pounds??! Yet, the equipment used to diagnose (and he does all the labs and x-rays himself), perform surgery (and administer the anesthetic) and even the prescriptions are the same as for any human but it's all done right there in his office by him. I wish I could have had Dr. Z treat ME when I broke my ankle 2 years ago, being pushed from one part of the hospital to the next all day long, sitting and waiting, poked and prodded, seeing who knows how many different people it would make your head spin PLUS it cost me over $20,000 for the hospital alone (labs, surgery and anesthesia were separate) and I had lost my insurance, as have so many of us in California. No, it sounds like somebody is a cheapster who doesn't pay his bills. Read Less

BL fails to mention that his pet in question is 12 years old, presented with hacking cough, for 2 months, (yhea, real concerned pet parent) not quite sure if you went to Veterinary School yourself, because have you had, you would know when an elderly patient presents with long term hacking cough it could obviously be related to a number of things, could very well be something as simple as Bronchittis, to somthing more complex as a heart condition. The most common and ethical treatment plan would be to treat as Bronchitis followed by a Heart work up if syptoms persisted. as stated ""My guess is that any good and honest veterinarian would have provided the same service."" is just that, your uneducated guess, you recieved an educated, honest response to your question of ""what is wrong with my dog"" "" he said it could be multiple issues"" this is axeactly what it could be ""multiple issues"". You did not recieve a refund for your office visit, because you did in fact recieve an office visit, as well as an educated response to your question regarding your dogs condition. As a veterinary Technician, I have full trust and respect for my Veterinarian. Calling to demand a refund of services recieved and further THREATENING the practice with slander will not further your cause! Liked: Disliked:Read Less

BEWARE! This veterinarian is either (A) less-than-adequate or (B) attempts to take advantage of his clients. Here's why...We knew our dog (a Pomeranian) was having some health issues and just wanted some confirmation or resolution. So we took our dog to see Dr. Z for the first time, because it was a local office. Here's the short, but accurate, version:1. After the exam, Dr. Z was not able to diagnose the problem; he said it could be multiple issues.2. He recommended giving our dog antibiotics, then returning in 7 days for a follow-up.3. If the problem persists after 7 days, perform more procedures: x-ray, blood and urine samples, etc.4. The total of all procedures was close to $500.00.5. I paid $40 for this exam, which resulted in the above diagnosis (aka nothing). The next day, I took my dog to another veterinarian for a second opinion. Within 2 minutes, this veterinarian was able to determine the cause of the health issue and justified the diagnosis based on the all present symptoms and the conditions of our dog. My guess is that any good and honest veterinarian would have provided the same service. This leads me to believe my first statement: This veterinarian is (A) trying to suck our wallets for money or (B) needs to study-up on his profession. If you're reading this and deciding if you should go here, DON'T! If you can, I strongly urge you to use another animal hospital. And if you're a current patient, I'm sorry. No amount of perceived kindness expressed by this facility will outweigh the underlying problems with this place: a veterinarian that is either inept or a crook.Good luck. Read Less

I think all pet owners who really care for their pets fear the words ""put down"" but we had to put our first dog of 18 years down at this hosp. because she was suffering. she was so strong, never whined or cried at all when she was at home. i really admired her for her strength but we couldn't let her suffer anymore so we put her down. after it was over, I had to pay the bills. doing that duration of paying the bills, i couldnt help but hear the assistant (he helped chk our dog with the doc) whistling a happy tune as he walked past us. Now okay, i get it that its a normal routine for animal hospitals to do the put downs, but to hear this guy whistling while my family & i are crying and trying to pay the bills of our now dead dog. its RUDE. i had to stare at him just to point out that ""hey my dogs dead, dont you think what youre doing is rude?"" & he stopped. we got a card a week later saying ""we are sorry for your loss."" it was a nice gesture, but the whistling, it made things more horrible than it already was.. I took my 14 year old cat here for a check up and had a few routine lab test done to make sure everything was ok. I work in the medical field and when you have a test done we will tell the patient ""no news is good news"" when it comes to the results but if there is an issue or concern we will call the patient right away. Anyway, I never heard back from the office so I assume everything was ok. I took her in again to get groomed and I mentioned that I have never heard back about the lab results and the person helping me said she would look it up for me. I come to find out she has been SUFFERING with severe liver failure! This was the results for a test taken 6 months ago! god knows how much worse off she is now. I already have an appointment with another vet today. If you have already established a good relationship with this vet I certainly hope they give you better attention then what my pet received. I have taken all my pets here and I am now taking them all somewhere else. Even if this is not common in this office, I only have to experience it once to know there is a possibility it can happen again but certainly not to my pets! Read Less

They may be members of our families, but these are pets people!  The good doctor prescribed a course of treatment and we were very impressed with his knowledge and level of care afforded our dog. He has a great staff and we feel lucky to have found the place. Read Less

Beware unless you plan on paying double for ANY surgery for your beloved pet!Read Less
