My husband & I have been going to see the young, Dr. Hagan since 2008. We continued to see him for several years since he was the vet that my in-laws have been going to for several more years. Anyway, we loved Dr. Hagan & the office staff up until very recently when we came across some problems with our 7 year old Boxer. Like most Boxers, ours started to develop some small lumps on his back & we brought him in right away to be examined by Dr. Hagan. These were very small, fingernail size lumps. Dr. Hagan brought to our attention that even though the lumps are small, & Boxers are prone to handling mast cell tumors, he advised us to remove them before they got bigger. So, we thought that made sense, if they got bigger, it would be more costly to remove them. So, he charged us about $700 to remove all three plus do biopsies & he used the lesser expensive anesthetic. In November 2011, he underwent the surgery & recovered fairly well. Now, about in June 2012, we noticed that another lump appeared on our Boxer. So naturally we brought him in to see Hagan again. This time Hagan viewed the lump, expressing that it was much smaller than the other ones he removed in November & that to remove this one it will be much less costly. With that said, we were bewildered when his nurse called us the following week & quoted us $999.18. I expressed how I couldn't understand how that was possible since his last surgery was only $700 or so. She said she would check into it & get back to me. When she did she came back saying that my boxer gained 20 lbs since November, so he'd need more anesthetic & she said we didn't have a biopsy done last time. She also told me that we used a cheaper anesthetic & that if we wanted to use the same one again & do the surgery without a catheter or IV, no blood work or biopsy, we could have the surgery done for $582.43. I was absolutely appalled! My Boxer was only 65 lbs, so that would mean he was 45 lbs when he was last seen, which was impossible. He is very fit. I challenged her saying my dog did in fact have biopsies on all three lumps, but she denied it. She said it's $134 for each biopsy. Needless to say, I immediately started looking for a second opinion. A few days later, I called the office & requested copies of our dog's records and was gingerly asked what for. "Are you moving? Do you want a second opinion? Do you just want them for your records at home?" Excuse me, these are for my dog, what is it any of your business what I want to do with them? I recently pulled my own personal medical records on myself & was not asked these questions. Needless to say I got them & when I reviewed them, my dog had only gained 5 lbs since his last visit & low & behold the biopsy report was included. Strange since he never had a biopsy done. I've found a new vet that actually checked my boxer's entire body for mast cells instead of only looking at the one that my husband & I found. He actually found several more. Also, instead of poking them right away like Dr. Hagan did, he insisted that we just watch them because if he pokes them they could spread. He also explained that Boxers handle this lumps very well & he doesn't want to have to keep putting our pet under surgery several times throughout the year every time a tumor popped up. He was looking into our dog's best interest. Since then, I recently called ESAC, about a week ago, to get my other animal's records since I am now taking them to our new vet, and again I was hassled. It took a few weeks for me to go in to get them, but when I did the receptionist told me I already picked up the records. I let her know that I had only picked up Bronx's & explained why I haven't been in right away after I requested them. Now mind you as well, I am nine months pregnant at this point. She grabs the file & takes it to the doctor to get approval to release my pets' records. As she's going through it, she tells me I picked up my Yorkie's paperwork but not my cats. I tell her no, it was my Boxer's. What does it matter in the first place, I'm requesting all paperwork except for his. Then, she goes on to show me where they put a post it over the prices which means they already made copies of it & she goes on to say I already picked it up. I reminded her again, that I never picked it up. However, she said when I first came in that they tossed the copies because someone told her I already grabbed it. So, she looks down at the folder & then an older man walks in & she tells him she'll be right with him, looks down at the folder again & then walks to him & asks him if he needs help with his dog. Even though, there's a second receptionist. She ignores me & walks out to help the guy. So, being that she didn't even tell me she'd be just a minute, my nine month pregnant self decides to sit down & I tell the other receptionist how that wasn't appreciated. So, she gets up & makes copies of my records, which is only 4 pages, taking only a minute & I leave. Ridiculous! Read Less
