*Update* They did step up and help in the end. I very much appreciate people who do the right thing. Thanks for doing the right thing. BEWARE!!! My sisters pet went in for a teeth cleaning and they burned him with the electric blanket. On top of that the hospital didn't make things right. Incompetence and a not caring attitude isn't where I would want to take my beloved pet to. Take yours at your own risk 😢 Read Less

Pretty disappointed, and definitely not going back. The lobby was packed to the brim when we took our dog in for a heart worm test. A simple blood draw so that they would approve his prescription for Heartguard. The women behind the counter seem nice enough, but were taking forever for even the simplest transaction. A lot of "Oh, you called that in? We have no record of that." - Sounded like the left hand wasn't communicating with the right. The vet tech was nice, but a tad condescending and talked to my partner and I like we were children. Whatever, I just need my dog's prescription. I'm not even getting my meds from them, so I wasn't too concerned. But in retrospect, there were some red flags. Flash forward to a few days later. 1800PetMeds says they have faxed over my pups prescription again and that they keep trying, but that Felton Vet still hadn't approved it. I call in a panic, thinking that perhaps his test was positive. They said they only call when they news was bad, and since they hadn't called I had assumed everything was fine. Thankfully, he was indeed negative, and they claim they never received any faxes from PetMeds after the heart worm test. Hmm... I checked with Petmeds again, and they confirmed that they have tried multiple times after the date he was tested. I asked if Felton Vet would price match since my dog is now a week late for his meds, and they refused - (even though it kind of seems like it was their fault). Between that and the lack of organization/basic office coordination, they'll never get another dime from us. Read Less

We adopted Reggie from a boarding facility in SC. Reggie was clearly neglected & not liked by the owner & assistant. When we went to sign his paper work they had 2 different names listed. He did not original respond to either one. The only health issue they disclosed was that he had FIV & issues with his teeth due to the FIV. I asked if they would bath him before we left & they looked at me like I had ten heads growing out of my shoulders. We got kitty bath wipes to clean him because we didn't want him to be stressed out by a bath. Reggie's ears were pitch black in the inside, he had broken teeth, a broken tail we went through the entire box of wipes. He had nightmare for the first several months that we had him. Then he peed on the sofa. We did not have a lot of money at the time & taking on a cat with FIV was a huge risk but it was better than were he was. We found the Mtn Vet & he helped us with Reggie's chronic UTI's (another side effect of  FIV). Eventually our financial situation improved & we were able to take Reggie to the vet office crossest to our home. Reggie hates car rides & going to the vet, & messes himself almost every time. We have been really good at seeing the signs before Reggie has an accident from the UTI but this time he peed on our newest sofa. My wife just had surgery, & had a massage appointment previously scheduled & I unfortunately was getting over the flu. I have only gone to the vets office three times, twice by myself  & the person I saw today was not who Reggie regularly sees. At the point he had two teeth removal sessions, extracting every tooth in his mouth & several visits for UTI.  When I first got there I was offered a room that was described as smelling 'heavy of bleach', I sheepishly denied the room & I was then asked if I wanted to check it out to see if it was okay or not. I said I probably not as I am not feeling well, but the older woman was rather forceful. I was barley in the door & it was clear I was not going to be able to stay in the room, much less Reggie. An intake nurse came out & affirmed my feeling on the room & we went over why I was there & she offered the idea of a cranberry solution treatment & that I should ask the Doctor. My wife & I had not been made aware this & I found it to be an interesting idea to explore. We already give the cats Nordic Naturals cod liver oil, a probiotic & lycine.  The vet came in & right our of the gate made a comment about the Reggie peeing on the sofa & strongly eluding that this was an issue with inflammation & that its typically due to stress. My eyes almost popped out of my head at no point has anyone indicated that Reggie was stressed. In fact the cats are the least stressed out of any of us in the house & all our friends & family know it. I found this conversation to be very insulting & quick impart because I am stressed from having the flu, my wife's surgery, & another vet bill & my sofa has been peed on. I said noone has said this to us before & she said that's because he hasn't been tested before. She then tells me that she has told my wife before that Reggie is stressed. I said okay so why didn't you test him for a UTI then she tells me because your wife turned it down. She asks me if I would like her to test Reggie & I explain that he releaved himself on the way over & so she grabs him & says he has a little left. I said you would feel more comfortable testing him. So I approve her to go and test him I hear to cat howls. I feel bad for Reggie & I am being called out as to what is best for him after spending thousands of dollars on him.My wife was being brought back home from her appointment & saw that I was still at the vet so she  stopped in, I explain to here what is going on. The vet couldn't get a sample & skirted the fact that she basically called my wife a liar. I was pretty upset & questioned the Vet firmly & strongly because I was insulted & undervalued. During the consultation the vet noticed the stitches had not dissolved from his surgery, from over a moth ago, she was in no hurry to get them removed or own up to the fact that she lied about what she said to my wife about Reggie's "stress".  We've been told he could have inflammation but never that he was a stressed cat. And beings that he hasn't had an accident outside the box for 2 years is an indication all the cats in the house play nice with each other, especially since they spend most of their time sitting on the couch sleeping & cuddling one another. Additionally, if this was stress related & not a UTI, why has he not had trouble peeing since his last UTI, antibiotic injection in May 27,'16. One would deduce antibiotic treatment worked. It's ok to back down as a doctor & admit you may have misspoken or been wrong instead of pushing forward with nonsense to just stand by an initial idea. I left the office felling very alone & not back by female peers.Cause god forbid a women standup for themselves Read Less

This review is an updated review since I took down my last review.  This review is solely based on the treatment I have received in the past.  I adore the doctors and MOST of the staff that works here. I've always felt that I've received the best care for my animals.I also think the vets and staff really do care about their patients. I've seen some reviews where people complain they are expensive.  I don't see that they are more than other vets.  And I've always felt that we've been given many options to lesson the financial burden. My previous review was basically about one of the front office staff who treated me very poorly on a few different occasions.  She refused to see my cat who could have died from a bladder infection. She gave me the option of dropping him off (paying the hospital fee) and saying that someone "might"  get to him. Basically She told me that the years of me being a customer meant nothing.  Frantically I went elsewhere.  And luckily my cat was treated and is fine.  But because of that experience I won't be returning until that employee is no longer there if ever.  I understand that it was just her and I had a nice chat with Joanna explaining my frustrations.  So I took my last review down.  The four stars is because of the service I've received from everyone else.  They are a great vet office and I hope I'm able to go back at some point. I saw some of the reviews with two stars. Yes, sometimes the wait times are a bit long but if you think about the professionalism and care of all the staff plus the clean environment then the long wait time complaints are minimal. Nancy is the best. She is very friendly. So is Antonia too. Dr Keil is very good with my two dogs and one of them is very nervous when at the vet. I really appreciate the nurse staff. They are professional, explain everything in full detail and provide alternative options. The facility is clean. I mean it is very clean and I respect a business that takes good care of its facilities. This brings me peace of mind knowing that my dogs are being treated in a place that values hygiene. So have I had to wait sometimes? Yes, but Felton is a small town and to have a hospital of this caliber in our small town is a great gift. So many people just like to focus on the negative and not even consider balancing their comments with the positive. So if you are looking for a good vet to go to then considering the Felton Vet Hospital is a good choice to have. The parking is always available. The staff is very attentive. The place is clean. If you have not visited the Felton Vet Hospital and are looking at Yelp reviews to get a sense of what you are in for than this is one posting you can trust. It is an honest posting without having to resort to negative comments just because I was having a bad day. I've been going to Felton Vet Hospital for twelve years now! Read Less

Knowledgeable, helpful and thoughtful -- What more could you ask for in a vet?!I have had a number of vet experiences in my years here in Santa Cruz and have to say I have been impressed each time I go to Felton Vet with my kitten, and more recently with a friend's sick cat I was watching for a couple of weeks. In the case of this visiting cat, Dr Keil was very thorough and determined to dig a little deeper than his normal vet (in Los Angeles) and prescribed a treatment (later confirmed positive by tests results) with which we saw immediate results. Additionally the staff had already sent copies and reminders for follow up treatments to this cat's normal vet in LA before I could even ask - above and beyond!I look forward to working with them for all of my pet care needs in the years to come. Sixteen years ago, our family was lucky enough to bring home two little mutts. The pups had been abandoned in Modesto and the Australian Shepherd Rescue Service had claimed them in order to find good homes.Jack was 12 years old when he passed away, and Mollie graced our home for another 4 years. Our daughter, Shannon, went through elementary, high school, and college with them, and Mollie sat in front as she got married. They filled our home with joy, laughter, and dog hair. Two years ago, Rick called and told me to meet him at our vet's office -- Mollie was in a very bad way, and she couldn't even stand.Dr. Keil asked us to leave her there for a couple of hours to figure out what was going on. I knew what was going on, she was done for -- she looked so, so bad. We sat in the parking lot doing a lot of crying. After two hours, we went back. Dr. Keil diagnosed Mollie with idiopathic vestibular disease -- or "old dog syndrome" -- and went on to say that she would be better within a month. We couldn't believe our ears. No drugs, just good advice and a lot of hope.Sure enough, Mollie came out of it with no effects. We got two more productive and wonderful years out of our sweet girl.We recently lost Mollie to old age. We have had Felton Veterinary Hospital as our vet for 16 years. We are sad about Mollie, yet so very grateful for the absolutely wonderful care and attention we have always received from Dr. Atton and Dr. Keil. The staff is first-rate, kind, smart, professional, and just good, hard-working people. They supported us right till the end.San Lorenzo Valley is so fortunate to have the very best medical care for our animals, our family. We are so grateful for their competency, professional care, and genuine sensitivity that they have given to us and other animals in our community. WARNING: Dr. Calvert (the avian/exotic vet here) does not believe in anesthetizing birds prior to euthanasia!!!Synopsis:When my regular avian vet was not available, I brought my beloved, terminally ill hen here for euthanasia, because I figured a parrot vet would be better (since,  you know, she would understand bird physiology) than a random dog/cat vet. Wrong!Immediately when Dr. Calvert walked into the room, she had a smug and condescending demeanor -- not exactly what I want when dealing with a dying pet, but I'll take it, if it means minimizing my girl's suffering. Then, the bomb drops:Me (in between sobs): "So, prior to injecting the lethal solution, I would like you to anesthetize her first."Her: "Why would you want me to do that?"[[Silence as I struggle for words, flabbergasted]]"What.. Why.... Does it MATTER  why I want you do do that? Are you saying you're NOT going to do it? Because if you can't do it, I can go somewhere else who WILL do it.""I can do that for you, but we're going to have set up special equipment and it's going to cost you extra. Is that what you want?""Yesssss." [hissing] "That is what I want."So she leaves the room, and I sat there for about 90 seconds more before realizing there was no way in hell I was going to hand my dying pet over to a doctor who needs me to explain why I want my dear pet asleep before she's injected with heart-stopping drugs. With that, I got up and left, and I took her to another clinic.  For the record (not that I should have to explain this to a vet), most humane organizations, recommend anesthesia for ALL animals prior to lethal injection. Why? Because it's the HUMANE thing to do. No animal should have to feel fear and stress in her last moments of life. That I should have to explain this to a veterinarian was absolutely horrifying. Moreover, even *IF* Dr. Calvert thinks that anesthetizing a bird prior to euthanasia is not necessary, it should not matter. My request should have been respected, not denigrated. You can bet that if I'd been holding a dying cat or dog in my arms, the request for anesthesia would not have been questioned for a second.I've had okay experiences here in the past with the dog/cat vet, but this one dreadful experience with Dr. Calvert makes me question the judgment and integrity of the entire business as a whole.Addendum: It has been suggested to me since my initial post, that no animal needs anesthesia prior to euthanasia. For the edification of readers, I am including this link, which clarifies the issue: animalsheltering.org/res… Read Less

I have had a great experience with Felton Vet Hospital. I am responsible for 3 snakes, 2 water turtles, 2 doves and 2 lovebirds. I wanted to get the doves seen because I was worried about some behaviors I had seen them displaying. Then I realized it made sense for all the animals to have a wellness exam. It seemed overwhelming to take 9 animals down to the vet so Dr. Calvert made special arrangements with me to make sure all our animals' needs were met.Unfortunately I was correct in my assumption that the dove's behavior was a sign of illness. It turned out that she was critically ill and need treatment ASAP. Dr. Calvert stayed overtime and made sure the dove's labs got sent in that evening. She was honest about price, possible outcomes, and all available courses of action. I did not feel pressured to make the "right choice". She just laid it out there and let me do what was right for my situation. The dove's condition is improving daily. She was extremely knowledgeable on a very wide variety of species. She provided me with all the information I needed to take the best care of all the animals. I would recommend Felton Vet Hospital for any exotic pet owner in this area. Read Less

UPDATE: The manager read my 3-star review below and followed up with me. She called to check in on our little girl and apologized for her front office staff. Jennifer was very inquisitive for any information we were willing to give and also gave me her direct number, asking me to call if I ever had any other issues or concerns. I for one always appreciate management who is truly concerned about their customers being treated professionally and on improving their staff. Jennifer, you rock! Keep up the excellent work and thank you for caring. Five star service, I WILL be back.Original review:  Very overpriced! PJ the receptionist will ignore you when you are waiting to check out if she has a personal conversation going on (even if you have a sick/injured pet waiting with you). Other receptionist told me I had a 5:30 pm appt, then before I hung up with her I double checked the appt time to which she said the appt was at 5. Had I not double checked, my sick kitty would have missed her appt. and there would have been a scene! Dr. Kiel is the only reason I gave these guys any stars; she spent at least 30 minutes with us, listened to everything we had to say, gave us options, and was very informative. Support staff gets NO stars, vets are the only worthwhile staff here. Expect to pay for top notch but only receive mediocre service/supplies/equipment used. Hopefully when we go back on Monday for a follow up we will have a better experience with the staff. Read Less

The care that  your pets will receive at Felton Veterinary Hospital is top notch, make no mistake.  The staff is very professional and the vets themselves are fantastic.   But some of the care is superfluous and expensive.  In my case, while I was willing to accept the legally required examination to renew my dog's maintenance prescription, I was not willing to accept several hundred dollars worth of tests and lab work that every other vet in the area said were excessive and unnecessary.  The staff would not compromise with me, so my dog is now going to a different vet.I was sad to leave Felton Veterinary as they are such good people, but you can expect them to spare no expense, cut no corners and go the extra mile - even when  it is not at all necessary. I wish I wasn't downgrading my review right now. These guys are right down the street and most on staff do their jobs very well. I'm not exactly sure who's fault this was today but they made a big error.Today I went in for the vaccine/blood test clinic they do I think once a week. I clearly wrote down on the check in paper that I wanted a blood test for heart worm and a TEST for Lyme disease. The front desk was clear on this. Luckily I accompanied my dog to the blood draw (he doesn't like being left alone with strangers), and after they drew his blood they said ok now we need to get to his neck area so I held him thinking they were getting more blood for some reason that they couldn't get from the leg. I noticed all too late that they had just injected something into him. I asked what they did and they said they gave him a Lyme vaccine. I explained that I clearly asked for a test and not a vaccine. They apologized for the error and when I asked them if there could be bad side effects from the vaccine nothing beyond the usual small symptoms were mentioned, no long term issues. So I tried not to worry. But then I looked things up online and it seems that Lyme vaccines are somewhat risky. They can case kidney issues and even create symptoms of the disease itself long term this may be a low percentage but it's unacceptable to me). Now I get to sit around for the next few years wondering if they just seriously hurt my dog because someone was sloppy.I'm trying to to freak out about this but my dog is extremely loved and I would never forgive myself if I could have saved him and didn't or took him somewhere that hurt him. So I'm not sure who needs to be reprimanded for this error but I think people should be very careful when going here. Read Less

These guys are super sweet, helpful, and honest. They took in my little guy, Chuck, for diabetes, nursed him part-way back to health (because I couldn't afford more overnights) and advised me on doing the rest. Chuck's doing great now. Felton's VERY upfront about costs, needs, and outlooks, they called me with updates, let me call as often as I needed to, and follow up. They treated me and my cat with love and kindness. Thanks isn't enough. Read Less

The staff here is very knowledgable and kind.  However, the prices are very high compared to other veterinary hospitals.  For example, at my old vet, having a basic nurse procedure done, such as anal glands, cost me $20; here, it cost $60.  They also require a full appointment with the vet each year (so $60 fee right there) before they will refill your pet's heart worm medication (with is another $200).  I've never had a vet do that before.Again, the staff itself is great - however, I feel I can receive the same quality of care for half the price elsewhere. We have two cats that we've been taking to Felton Veterinary for about 5 years now. We have always had excellent care. One of our cats is a bit...wild, who likes to swear, hiss and scratch. A previous Vet in Scotts Valley took her outside the office and returned her wet from water, I was appalled at how they treated her. Not so at Felton Veterinary. They are so kind to our animals, and to our outspoken kitty especially. I was amazed to see that our Vyvyan even purred for Dr. Atton. All the staff is wonderful, caring and helpful. We have been taking our pets to Felton Veterinary Hospital for 14 years. They have seen us through two cats and one dog. When our oldest cat turned 17 years and needed to be put down due to health problems, they were very sensitive and reassuring. They always are very attentive and thorough with our pet visits and they remember our pets. Super friendly and helpful staff and Nancy the receptionist has been there for 17 years! Making appointments is a breeze and they are always as accomodating as possible. It is clean and conveniently located; a beautiful facility. They also take CareCredit as well as VISA and M/C, checks and obviously cash. I can't imagine going to any other Vet facility.Read Less

Not have much luck with vets.  Came here one time.they were very nice, sincere. However, I wasn't seen for my appointment until over an hour after it was scheduled.  They said because they knew my appointment  was going to take a while they took the other dog in first... WTF!!!??  I scheduled the appointment. you knew what I was coming in for before I showed.  if you don't have time change my appointment.  Then they said he needed a 5k surgery and prescribed some pretty pricy pills.  When I told them I told them I would need the doctors approval to get the pills refilled through 1-800-petmeds  (way cheaper!!!)  They tried to discourage me by saying their quality wasn't as high.  Luckily the next vet I went to changed his meds.  She even asked why he was on them because there are much safer and cheaper meds out there.   ug!! If I could give zero stars, I would. What kind of "hospital" is this when there is no vet there to treat animals?  Arrived this morning at 8:20a with my sick dog only to be told there is no vet there and we need to drive to emergency.  They suggested I wait so when the vet came in, he could do an examination (read : we charge you for the exam prior to your going over to the real hospital that is open 24/7.. unlike Felton Vet). You are NOT a hospital.  Won't ever bring another pet there.  I've used you guys before for boarding my dogs and you were not very good at that, either (when I called to check on my dogs, you treated me like a criminal for caring about how my dogs were being treated while I was out of state).

Read Less
