Drs. Martinez and Harrigan saved my dog's life. He had surgery for a lick granuloma in July 2016 at another vet  hospital in MH and was having a horrible time healing. He was continually chewing thru the cone and bandage and getting to get to his leg. His leg was basically shredded. His previous vet was giving him sedatives, antibiotics and rebandaging it. We dealt with this for 5 months and the prev vet finally told us " take him home, take off the bandage and let him go at it,  you'll come home to a blood bath and he will probably chew off his leg, but in 30 years I have never had a dog this challenging and I don't know what else to do for him".  The self inflicted wounds were far worse than the surgical site and was and it seemed as if he may need amputation or worse. He was lethargic, not eating, and vomiting. We realized we needed to find a new vet. We made an appointment with the Gilroy Vet Hospital and immediately Dr. Harrigan saw him he asked if his leg had ever been cultured. He thought it looked like staph.  He immediately came up with a definitive treatment plan. He sedated him, took a culture, cleaned up his leg, give him his first laser treatment (suggested a series of 8) and sugar wraps which would kill the staph (in case it was but would also take the itch away and promote healing) as well as a strong antibiotic. We left our dog there for the first treatment, and when we picked him up he was a completely different dog. He was no longer intensely trying to rip off his own leg. He was calm, perky and had an appetite. We had the most normal day then we had in 5 months. He was even able to not wear the cone. He wasn't limping anymore and he acted like his leg wasn't even there. MIRACLE. We took him for the rest of the laser treatments as well as continual sugar wrapping that we eventually took over doing at home once the laser treatments were completed. The culture came back positive for MRSA that was only sensitive to 2 antibiotics and luckily one of those was the one Dr had put him on. He later put him on the other one as well.  Both Drs. Martinez and Harrigan have seen him on return visits and they consult each other, which is a great benefit. They have our boy on an anti itch medication as well as an anti anxiety med that seems to be doing wonders. We are now bandage free, and hair is growing. We still cone while we are gone, but we are just being cautious until he has completely healed. I don't want to say anything bad about our previous vet for missing the fact that our dog had MRSA and thinking he was just crazy, we are just grateful that we found this animal hospital before it was too late. I also want to add that we were given fees before the treatment was started and I feel they are extremely reasonable. I would give 10 stars if I could because the staff is very caring as well! We just had the worst experience ever at this place. One of the employees stole my wife's cell phone off the counter while she was preoccupied with paperwork just minutes before closing with only one other client / gentleman who was in the waiting room with his cat.. luckily she had a phone locator set up so we tracked the phone to the vets office with a laptop & as we were pulling back into the office which we literarily live across the street from. The employee who we had already suspected was responsible for the theft because of her bad attitude dirty looks & rude gestures & unwillingness to help us in anyway when we asked if we could look around for the phone she was leaving the parking lot. My wife said let's see if the location moves as she drives away & sure enough the location icon moved as she drove away down Monterey so we followed her but lost her in the rain & low visibility after she sped up to unsafe speeds.. she tossed the phone out her window & the very helpful sheriff was able to recover the phone on the side of the road right where we lost sight of the thieving reckless driving bad attitude employee.. The phone was broken whe tossed out the window. When I went back this morning to explain to the vet Dr. Martinez what had happened with the employee & how she stole my wife's phone then threw it out her car window after she realized we were following her he came unglued & started yelling at me to get out & that she didn't do it. I was very surprised that he freaked out the way he did. He became very aggressive & angry. I would think he would be thankful that we informed him of the thieving employee because that's a huge liability to have an employee that would be willing to steal a clients phone... very disappointed in how Dr Martinez reacted & his lack of taking responsibility or even acknowledging the fact that his employee stole my wife's iPhone. He literally physically chased me out while yelling at me to never come back & that his employee didn't do it.. needless to say we will be taking our business elsewhere as he told us to never come back... little did the thieving employee know that my wife is the kind of person that if she knew the girl needed a phone or money for something she probably would have offered to give her a phone or help her with whatever it was she needed but instead she decided to just steal my wife's iphone... DO NOT BRING YOUR ANIMALS HERE. The 5 stars are deceiving. I definitely will not be coming back. I came to get my 4 month old kitten checked because he wasn't looking very good, the first thing they said was they would take a look at it for $60. Okay that's fine. They just took its weight and measured it then automatically said that there Is noting that they can do to help besides putting it to sleep. Of course that was a terrible feeling and then they said it's also going to be $120 to put him down. I then only paid for the $60 check up and went to the vet hospital in San Martin. They were nothing but kind and generous. They offered to take a look for free. They gave me advice on how to help the kitten and gave the kitten fluids and the kitten was looking great after that. How can the people at gilroy veterinary hospital live with themselves. They are reckless money hungry and don't care about your animals. Absolutely never coming here again. Read Less

Money Hungry Staff!I brought my dog here for the first time and last because I noticed she had a small wound on her paw it was a bald spot the size of a pea but she seemed to be fine but the next day it was a bit bloody and drainy, she had stopped walking on it completely and her paw was swollen. So after the Dr. AND Assistant had took a look at it they were so sure & I mean SO SURE that if they cut open her paw that they would find a foxtail in there..even stating "If it was my dog I would". They basically guaranteed that if they did the procedure that there would be something in there. As Vets they should know what they're talking about so we approve because this is common apparently they've dealt with it before...YET! I come back for my dog two hrs later after she's been sedated and they got whatever it was out of her paw just for them to say "We didn't find ANYTHING."Here's your bill & some antibiotics to reduce the swelling. That's all that she ever needed was some antibiotics and it was not necessary to perform anything on her in the first place! They still charged me the full amount for her to be sedated and worked on for nothing! Unbelievable. These people are manipulative & money hungry CLEARLY don't care about their patients . Read Less

I used to come here all the time when I was younger. Recently the trip I made, made me dislike this place even more. They are money hungry; don't care about the customer or the animal. A few years back, I had a tooth from my dog removed, and they had given me a estimate when I dropped by dog off. When something needs to be done, they are supposed to call the owner for approval first. They had polished my dogs teeth, before pulling them along with tried charging me for fluoride among other things. I told them I was not called and didn't approve of any of the things they tried charging me $240 extra. Also that it's ridiculous to polish and clean a tooth, just to pull it out. A legal friend of mine confronted them about rules/laws. So they refunded that part.My dad had brought his dog here numerous times because she had issues with her butt. They said they couldn't do anything about it, they didn't know what the issue was and that it would go away.  I was referred by a friend to South County Animal Hospital in Morgan Hill. That place is 100% better. I took my dad's dog there and they did a blood test along with a couple others and found out that the dog has an autoimmune disorder and had to be on meds. But they knew right away what the problem was and didn't push us aside like Gilroy Vet did. They treat us like a valued customer and better pricing. The most recent was, I had picked up a dog that someone hit and left her for dead. I thought, well maybe, just maybe Gilroy Vet would help......Nope. Since she didn't have a chip they didn't want anything to do with her. I called animal control and the asked Gilroy Vet to hold her for 10 minutes for the animal control officer to come get her. Nope, they wouldn't hold her... for 10 minutes....... So I took her to animal control, they too her to the San Martin Shelter and she is doing much better now. Her feet were all bloody and it looked as if her legs were broken. She was posted on San Martin's website and already 20 people say they will take her if her owner doesn't come forward. Read Less

People, don't let the 5 stars fool you. We went there for years for small things and they seemed great. My baby Bonnie got sick last year and Harrington said it was her kidneys. She was getting worse fast and he said there were 3 options, take her somewhere far away and get expensive dialysis treatments a couple of times a week and then she would die anyway, or we could pump some stuff into her and she might live a couple of weeks, or we could do this treatment that would cost a couple of thousand dollars but she would be back to normal for 4 to 6 months before she died. Bonnie was family, she stayed by my side almost 24 hours a day while I was going through chemo, only leaving me to go potty. For more than a year she lay with me and licked my hand now and then when she knew it was bad. I had to do whatever I could to save her. After leaving her with him for a couple of days, and wondering why he didn't want me to come and visit her, I came to get her and found her laying in her own urine, poop and vomit. They said she hadn't eaten the whole time she had been there and then the doc told me that it didn't work and did I want to have her put down right then? I was in shock. We said we'd take her home and he suggested the stuff you pump into her skin. The girl behind the counter made a nasty comment to the other girl about how mean we were to make her suffer longer. She came home ate a little, tried to play with her ball and she tried so hard to be her happy self. She died a few days later. He robbed me of her best last days, lied to me about making her better and still charged me the full amount which a year later I am still trying to pay off. I wouldn't go back to him if he were the last vet on earth. Protect your animals you love, take them to a good vet. Read Less

Do Not Take Your Animal To This Vet For Boarding or Clinic. I recently took my dog to this clinic for boarding initially due to it not being far from where I live.  While in lobby a lady come in and states her dog has Kennel cough an highly contagious disease for dogs.  My dog is current on his shots, but from some research I found out they can still catch if exposed.  The lady was Directed to lobby instead of entering in Rear where the animal should have entered.  I had to catch a flight so to make a long story short, when I returned in two day my dog had kennel cough.  I immediately called the office and the girl said bring him in and if he did catch the examining fee will be waived.  He had not been no where else but straight from there home.  Dr. Dennis Harrigan examined him and he was given 10 days worth of antibiotics. He acted like he did not want the fee to be waived and then said this time, I was a little taken back but I was calm. I had the money to pay for my dog if needed so.  I asked him could he check a lump on his right leg that I was concerned about, so he did a needle aspiration and I nervously waited for results.  After about 5 minutes I hear someone said out loud the door "Sure don't look like no good cells" so I am horrified at this point and disappointed my dogs diagnosis was not privately discussed with respect.  When he entered and told me that my dog had sarcoma I was devastated and started to cry.  He did not show much emotion, and I said I would get a second opinion because that is my right.  He gave me a estimate of what it would cost and I sought to get a second opinion.  Friends at another animal facility said don't worry we will do the surgery to remove which they performed Free of charge from just the love they had for my pet and the friendship we had encountered. They said we will send the paperwork to your vet and they sent it to Gilroy Veterinary since I just had gotten in the town and did not know of any other doctor.  Dr. Dennis Harrigan did not want nothing further to do with me or my dog, and What did we do?.  Out of curiosity I called to see if he could get boarded and they said they were full.  My brother called back and they had an opening, when I called back to see if there was a problem, they said Dr. Harrigan states to take your business else where, wow how professional is that.  I had no intentions of bringing my dog back, and have since found another place to board without my dog coming home with kennel cough.  I found his behavior and the attitude of his staff in this particular circumstance to be unprofessional and somewhat rude.  Makes one wander where their love really is at or is it based on financial gain. Took our nearly 13 year old Golden Retreiver to Gilroy Vet on Saturday the 16th. They were very accomodating. I called right before closing on Friday and they gave me a 8Am appointment the following morning.Golden Retreivers are susceptible to many skin conditions and ear problems. Mine has suffered terribly from the fleas this past summer. While on vacation the previous week my dog scratched a tumor under his chest that became very inflamed, so I dreaded the trip to the Vet.  I was greeted warmly when I arrived, and the Doctor and the assistant were fabulous. I explained Bailey's conditions and the doctor proceded to check him out. (I know that tumors are common in Goldens, but I wanted to make sure that there would be no infections)The doctor looked at his teeth and marveled at their condition. He assessed the tumor under the chest and the hip, and asssured us that they were not a problem. Why operate and cause undo pain onto an older dog. He looked at his bone density, and while not the best, he was not the worst either. My daughter did ask the Vet how much time we had left with Baily, and his best guess was 6 to 12 months. The cancer won't get him, but probably his hips. I dread that day, but not many Golden's live this long. The compassion here at Gilroy Vet was unbelievable. Thank You again. Read Less

I write this review with a very heavy heart. I'll start by saying that we have gone to this vet since we moved to Gilroy, so for 15 years now. We've had three cats (two still with us) and one dog (an Australian Cattle Dog). We've been lucky to have healthy pets, but we've had to bring them in occasionally for minor issues and sometimes for boarding. No complaints there. We had to put down our first cat about 8 years ago (she was over 20 years old!). They were very sensitive and understanding, as it was very difficult for us. I appreciated their demeanor. I appreciated it even more this past Saturday, as we had to put down our dog after 13 years of ownership (she was 15). This was our one and only family dog, and she was so much more than just a pet. She was absolutely part of our family, and putting her down was the most difficult decision we had to make as a family. The vet techs who initially assisted us were so sweet and caring, and the vet (Robin, maybe Robyn) who administered the final injection was one of the kindest people I've ever encountered. We were a weepy mess, holding our dog as best we could while she was on the table, and Robin knew exactly what to say. She made us feel at peace with our decision, and we knew our baby was in good hands in her final moments. Thank  you so much to everyone at this vet hospital. They provide excellent care when your pets need it, and when it comes time to say goodbye, there is not a better team to be there in those incredibly difficult moments. Read Less

Read Less
