Dr. Swope is kind, knowledgeable and reasonable. She's easy to talk to, and really cares about the animals. I've had her look at my dogs, cats, pig, chickens, goats and sheep, and her calm demeanor keeps everyone relaxed through the entire exam. I would give Dr. Birr and the vet tech (I’m sorry I don’t know her name) 5 stars. Dr. Birr listens to me when I tell her what’s wrong and seems very knowledgeable about what she’s doing. I like her no nonsense attitude and that she doesn’t beat around the bush, and the prices are the best I’ve ever encountered at the vets. However, the people at the front counter are regularly rude, unprofessional, and seem to not care that much about animals/their job. Not all of them are this way, but I’ve been to this vet many times and three are routinely like that when I call or come in. If it weren’t for Dr. Birr and the vet tech I would not come here, however in my opinion Dr. Birr is worth it. The others just need to get it together. Read Less

After being a very loyal customer of Dr. Birr's for many years for vet services, boarding services, purchasing pet food and spending thousands of dollars there, I was told my cat that I boarded there for years had a dormant gene probably from a kitten because he got 2 upper respitory infections while boarding there within a month (one right after the other) while in her care.  He was an indoor cat and never got URI's, except there at Community Vet while being boarded.  Instead of being honest and admitting that he got sick there while in her care and charging me a lot of money for boarding, she then charges hundreds of dollars over and over to get him better.  I asked if there was a blood test that can be given to prove her ridiculous hypothesis as garbage and she said no.  Of course there isn't.  That was the last time I ever went to her.   If she has to lie and make up crazy stories to protect the fact that her facility wasn't clean and disinfected correctly, that's on her.  My cat has never gotten any upper respiratory infections since then.  Perhaps that dormant gene went back into dormancy.  How ridiculous!!Her staff needed improvement in communication between each other and to Dr. Birr, which she agreed with!!  One staff member had the nerve to say "We gave you a free bag of dog food".  So what, I deserved more than that and so did my four dogs, cat and rabbit.  You also charged me hundreds of dollars to make my cat feel better from something he got while in your care two times in a month.  You can keep your one bag of dog food.  I spent $3,500.00 plus at Community Vet just on my cat when he was hit by a car and they had the nerve to brag about giving me one bag of dog food in all those years.This happened a few years ago, and I've since moved on to a better and more honest vet.  Potential customers beware!! This was my fourth visit to this Veterinary Clinic, and I unfortunately did not see the same vet as I had during my previous visits. Even though I had an appointment set, I was not seen until an hour later. When Dr. Birr did finally come in, she had absolutely no tact in berating me as a dog parent even though I had done nothing wrong...and it was as if she was just trying to sell me on products the entire visit. I had walked in the day before explaining that my dog was chewing her paw and I was told to get a soft cone for her which I immediately did. When I saw the vet the next day...she said I needed a soft cone, I showed her that I bought one already and she looked at it as if was a piece of trash. Then went on to say that there are more comfortable ones that they sell.When it came to updating my dog's vaccines, she did not even ask me. She just did it even though I was not there for my dog to be vaccinated, but rather her paw to be looked at. She worded every sentence in a way that makes you feel like scum. I will never go back and it took everything inside me not to walk out while this woman was being so extremely rude. My dog is perfectly healthy and I have done anything and everything to keep her safe. For being a veterinarian, she has no compassion towards animals or human beings. Read Less

ZERO STARS!  DO NOT BRING YOUR PET HERE for surgery or other services!I am appalled by Dr. Birr and this practice. We rescued a cat from a local shelter who had been "spayed" by Dr. Birr.  She sat in the shelter for over 4 months prior to finding our home. And 2 months after that, our cat began acting out.  Having been issued a Spay Certificate by Dr. Birr, we incurred tremendous costs to identify that she had NOT been spayed.  Worse yet, Dr. Birr CUT OPEN our cat to spay her and then DID NOT REMOVE HER UTERUS OR OVARIES. When she closed her up, she failed to close her inner abdomen wall and then returned her to the shelter unfixed and with a fake certificate.  After considerable research and testing, our NEW and AMAZING vet, Dr. Quezada, identified the issue, performed exploratory surgery, removed the scar tissue, repaired the failed surgery closing and PROPERLY spayed our cat.  She no longer hides under furniture and scuttles away from people, likely because she is no longer in pain.DO NOT BRING YOUR PET TO DR. Dr. Birr was recommended to me by a close friend.  I took my Mexican rescue terrier to her when we first got back into the U.S.  She was very thorough.  After I'd had my pup about 4 months, he became listless and stopped eating.  I immediately went to Dr. Birr.  My dog was put on an IV right away and the meds were started.  Dr. Birr and her team turned around what could have been life threatening.  My little guy is now better than ever and I am very grateful to everyone at Community Veterinary Center.  Five Big Stars!!! Community Vet is an incredible vet I came across volunteering for a rescue. They're extremely organized & the staff is professional and prompt on the phone. You're able to get in last minute which is great. Dr. Birr is a straight shooter & doesn't candy coat things, I appreciate her candor in my dog's diagnosis. Dr. Birr handled a complex tail surgery for my English Bulldog. The surgery resulted in years and years of an improved life of our dog -dramatically. After finding Dr. Birr at Community Veterinary Center in North Hollywood -I was so happy to be able to make decisions about my dog's health first before having to consider the cost. The fees are very reasonable (the best I have found in the valley). The staff and doctor truly love their patients. Additionally, the service and wait time at the office is excellent. We called 15 minutes before closing they had us come right in molly had been bit on the paw by a pit bull.the staff was very professional and competent. PET OWNERS BEWARE!! Took my dog in to get nuetured and they returned it to me with a dislocated hip!! I didnt notice it right away because my dog was still groggy from the surgery so i carried him out. Once i noticed it i called them and they denied it completely, blamimg me for the injury. Dr. Birr has no concern for dogs, just in making money. I explained to her that my dog had a big gash in its upper leg and a dislocated hip and she completly denied it. I have been going to Dr Birr for 13 years and never have I had any of the bad experiences described here. She runs a good clinic and yes, some things can be expensive, but at the same time, she charges much less for a lot of services. My friends use a different vet and always pay 2X what I am averaging for visits. If she seems condescending, guess what, too bad. I have been scolded by her and/or staff over the years for doing what I read online instead of just contacting them. So now I just take my dogs there pretty much right away, before I create complications. Preventive measure = cheap; paying for major med's, or special services, or treatments, or special food is always going to cost more. This clinic is comprised of regular and very caring people, who care about your pet, your feelings are and should be second to that. If you need coddling or hand holding, get over it. Listen to what they tell you and follow their directions. These are the lessons I have learned over the years of going here. One final note, I had a very sick dog, and through Dr Birr's care I managed to extend her useful and happy days for an extra two years. During this time Community Vet was helpful, available and compassionate. I could not give higher praise. As a life-long dog owner I have been to a lot of vets and this place is good in my book. I would like to highly recommend Dr. Birr and her amazing staff at Community Veterinary Center! I appreciate that Dr. Birr gives it to you straight & doesn't charge an arm and a leg for her services!! Our dog is overweight & Dr. Birr let us know how important it is to get our dog Elvis' weight under control for him to have a longer, healthier, & happier life. I also appreciated the fact that when I asked about food she had a suggestion but in no way tried to push it. I ended up buying the food from community vet center, and it turns out that they charge less for it than anywhere else! Dr. Birr and her staff are highly knowledgable and did a great job on Elvis' exam, teeth cleaning and extractions! I recently adopted two unaltered dogs from East Valley Animal Shelter. The shelter charged me for neutering procedure and sent my dogs to two different clinics. The first dog was sent to another clinic and the second dog was sent to this clinic. The first clinic returned the dog with a free plastic cone and offered 7 vetprofen 25 mg (pain killer) pills for $16. In this clinic I was told that shelter's voucher does not cover the cone and medications. They asked $60 for a cone and $60 for medication. I refused to buy the cone and told them that compared to the other clinic their price for medication is too high. They accepted to charge me $20 for the medication. After paying 20 dollars and taking my dog home I noticed that they have given me only two vetprofen 25 pills. Overall compared to the other clinic they charged me 430% more for each pill and with that their out-of-pocket charge would be almost 800% more than the other clinic! I hated the fact that the shelter forced me to do business with these guys. I'd rather choose a place based on reviews and ratings. Read Less

Worst place ever. I.adopted a kitty and te shleter sent him here to get neutered and before going to pick it up i called and asked how long they are going to take, the girl said it was going to take time and said she would call me if the kitty was going to need anything or if i had to pay anything. When i called her back saying that i couldn't pick him up she said it was fine and told me the total cost was going to be 35. The next day i go pick up the kitty and the lady said the total was 61 i couldn't believe it i asked why but she said it was for keeping him cosy and the pain reliever. Dr. Birr and her team are hands down the best experience I've had. She does what is necessary and in the pets' best interest without over charging or upselling. The staff is super friendly and accommodating. They always remember my name and what is going on with my pets. Most importantly I can pick my pets up after a treatment or surgery and they are completely calm and not stressed out!! This shows that they too had a wonderful experience!! I can't my dog's nails myself so having just moved into the area, I called around and one vet wanted to do a full exam on my dog just to do her nails! Ridiculous. This vet told me it would be $22 so I took her over there. As my dog has some dog aggression issues, I waited outside. Although they forgot me (I'm not sure how) and I had to knock on the door after they closed to be let in, the vet trimmed her front feet for me without a charge because she felt bad that I waited so long (45 mins outside). I appreciated not being charged and will give them a chance in the future with my other vet needs. Read Less

The East Valley shelter sometimes sends animals here for spay/neuter before releasing them. The first time the staff was so afraid of the cat that they would not take him out of the carrier. And as it turned out, the world's meanest cat was only hurt and afraid, and now sleeps beside his person. Wait; isn't this a VETERINARY clinic? So shouldn't they have some clue about behavioral issues with cats? The second animal was a large dog, and I do mean large, also from the shelter. CVC wanted her picked up the day of the surgery, which is not common practice with a female dog. This dog was so out of it that she could not stand on her own, much less walk. I still rescue animals from East Valley but I always request that they be sent to a different clinic if they need to be spayed or neutered. It is abundantly evident that they have their shelter contract only for the money (which isn't much) and not for the welfare or benefit of the animal. Be sure you ask if their quoted fees include the little incidentals like pain medication and (as someone else mentioned) e-collars. These add-ons, which are a necessity especially for female animals, will increase your cost considerably. Read Less

She explains all treatment options--again something many vets don't always do. A friend recommended this clinic because the Vet is really good. However the young blonde lady at the front desk has terrible customer service skills. I called to ask about the hours ""please hold and the receptionist never got back to me"" My question about hours of service could have been answered really fast but she did not even let me talk. I ended up walking in and the lady is ""very rude"" frowning,making faces and raising her voice when you have questions. The Vet and the other staff were professional. The Dr. is very straight forward and takes the time to explain everything without being arrogant and super sizing the procedure - as in talking you into things that are not at all neccesary. The prices are very resonable and the staff are accomidating. Don't be put off that you need an appointment. They will take you right away if you have an emergency. My dog had an afternoon appointment on a Friday and needed an emergency surgery due to a pyometra (severe uterine infection). She was old and I never got her spayed. I've been taking my dogs to this facility for a couple of years now after switching vets due to expensive care, rudeness, and long wait times. I found this place and compared to the 3-4 other vets I've been to, CVC has affordable rates and they've always been upfront about how much things cost. I like that the Dr. Birr has access to my dogs' history in the treatment rooms and I don't feel bad to have to ask how much things would cost. Also, Dr. Birr takes her time to explain things and I don't feel rushed like she's just trying to move on to the next patient. All the techs. are nice and helpful, some may be nicer than others, but never exerienced any rudeness. I've also never had a problem scheduling appointments for the same day, they are very flexible accomodating, and no long waits. The only thing that I was a bit surprised is that I didn't get any after-care instructions (in writing) regarding what we should do to take care of my dogs after they were neutered, but they did provide verbal information once I asked more detailed questions. Also, another downfall is that there are no weekend hours (I think, at least not when I wrote this). By far, the pros outweight the cons. Now, I only give 5 stars to restaurants. That being said I have used Community Vet Center maybe 4-5 times to help my Jack Russell's itching problems. I have not had a problem with any of the staff, doctors or services. Today I had my 12 year old German Shepherds teeth cleaned and one extraction for a cracked bad tooth was needed. I was very nervous having her put under but she seems fine and is resting happy at home now. The doctor a cute gent with a British accent (I did not catch his name) explained everything he did. I guess teeth cleaning is normanlly pricey. $145 bucks and $45 for the extraction. I also paid $135 last week for pre-op b lood work. But so far I like them and feel comfortable going there. They DO need to trim back the tree in front of their building. I can NEVER SEE the building and its right there on Burbank Blvd?! Read Less
