I should have written this review several years ago, but better late than never, right? My 13-year-old cat, Maggie, broke her leg - you know, how those kinds of things always happen late at night before some major holiday like Thanksgiving? She was gushing blood, so we rushed her to an emergency vet at 11:30pm 2 days before Thanksgiving. They stopped the bleeding, stitched her up, took Xrays, dispensed pain meds, and gave us a consultation. At first look, the tech said that it would probably be about $4,500 to repair her broken leg, as it looked like she broke both bones. After reviewing the Xrays, she said she couldn't say for sure without talking to one of the specialists, but because of the location of the break, it would probably be closer to $5,800. Of course, this place was associated with VCA. We scheduled an appointment to speak with the specialist and dragged our butts home to bed. Not having that much money, we started panicking and took a look at Yelp! When we saw the reviews for the VCA hospital we had been at, with multiple reviews of how they took people's money, then killed their animals, we said "Hell no!" and started looking other places. We found Huntington Pet Vet, and our neighbor across the street (we had just moved in 3 weeks before this happened) had experience with them, so we took Maggie in for a consult the day before Thanksgiving. They reviewed the work the emergency vet did and taped her back up because, due to the holiday, the vet we would need to do the surgery was on vacation. Then, they gave us the estimate.... for the surgery, plus several followup visits, the grand total for a surgery by their specialist would be... $900. Now, $900 is still a lot of money, but it sure is a HECK of a lot less than $5,800!!!!When we met with the vet doing the surgery, Dr. Naito, she warned us that, due to Maggie's age and the location of the break (just 1 centimeter under the bend of the back leg), it would have to be pinned and she most likely would not walk the same any more, worst case scenario would be that her leg might be completely stiff. After several anxious weeks, she was unpinned, and I'm happy to say she was able to walk just fine!!! We did notice that when she sat, she would kink that foot about an inch to the side, but 3 years later, she's showing no signs of slowing down, and her leg still moves well! I'm forever grateful to Dr. Naito and the staff at Huntington Pet Vet for excellent treatment at affordable rates. I've moved out of the HB area, so they are not my regular vet, but I still refer people over there. As a side note: You'll see complaints about wait time, and it is true - they do sometimes have long waits, but be assured that this is because they are taking care of all animals and the business.
