My dog that adore was completely paralyzed in 2012 when she was at least 3 years old. She is still here just as bossy as ever. All thank to Dr Berry who performed her spinal surgery. I worked in healthcare for over 30 plus years for humans, and I never saw a human doctor take as much care for a patient as Dr Berry. I’m so grateful for his care. He really saved our family baby. My son who has special needs loves our dog, and she has been with us since my child was just 10 years old to adulthood thanks to the great care given by the team. Thank you - always grateful. Dr. Aubry, unitized my dearest cat 7 years ago out of her lack of knowledge of how to treat a lymphoma in cats. While alternative medicine (holistic medicine) has an effective way to treat lymphoma in cats, she had no idea! Instead she injected lethal colored medicine into my cat body which actually dramatically made my cat feel much worse immediately and within 3 days my cat died in her hand! But my biggest complaint is that she told me to stop giving phenobarbital to my epileptic cat! This caused my cat to have a horrific relapse of seizure the last night of his precious life and caused me to rush him to the Irvine hospital at 3 am to get an injection of phenobarbital into my already dying cat. This also cost me extra $250 which I should not have paid if Dr. Aubry did not MAL-PRACTICED and would not have had told me to discontinue giving phenobarbital to my dear cat. I will NEVER forgive Dr. Oceans Aubry for her gross MALPRACTICE advice on my sick cat. I will never forget her gross incompetence in this matter. Also, super expensive hospital for pets and very rude office manager who would insult your pet in front of you. Read Less

Medical staff was compassionate when we first brought our pet in. Sadly and unexpectedly, we lost him within 12 hours. They also lost our tags that I specifically asked for and wrote down when we first brought him in. Dr. Barry kindly called and gave his condolences. After that the office completely dropped the ball, we were patronizing, and never followed up regarding the tags that they supposedly were looking for. I had to call them for information in regards to next steps. All they cared about was getting paid when I went to pick up remains (they already had a 50% payment from day one). Gilbert was incredibly rude when I stated that I wanted my tags and remains, he said "well, I want to get paid". I NEVER said that I was not paying. I was expressing that I was not pleased with the process and wanted some clarification on how the office was so poorly run. I will never refer them, nor will I ever come back. What a horrible way to have to deal with the grieving process of losing a beloved pet. Read Less

This place advised me to do surgery on my dog right after she had a mishap at another hospital. It was late at night and they gave me a 50 percent than 30-40% chance of survival... I foolishly took my dog home thinking about all the negative things I've heard about doing surgeries not from your regular vet. When I wanted to do surgery a few days later it was too late. I thought I was told euthanasia would take 10-15 minutes, but when the doctor comes it only takes 1 second. They are nice about giving you waiting time in a private room along with your pet. Had I understood euthanasia process I would have waited with her longer. Most staff members seem nice, but when I came in at night it seemed nightmarish and had a thick odor of cigarette smoke. But, all the veterinarians I have spoken to since (mobile vet, regular vet) seemed to have great respect for this clinic. Saying, “Oh, it's a very good one.” I appreciate especially one of the staff members a female doctor with brown hair and brown eyes who tried to persuade me for surgery that night. Sorry, I was so difficult. I did not like the euthanasia doctor shaming me, but of course I should have done surgery the day it happened. Thank you for yelling at me because I wouldn't understand if you didn't. They will ask for your id. They will advise surgery if it is only necessary. There is a small window for surgery in my case. MRI=2,200-2,400; surgery 7,000-10,000. Euthansia 385? for a small dog.. Read Less

I brought my dog in who's mouth was bleeding because of a tooth that had fallen out. I sat in the the room for two hours before the vet told me she would have to sedate my dog. After waiting another hour she told me there was nothing they could do because it was a dental procedure and gave me a recommendation to a dental specialist, and a dose of antibiotics. She then casually mentioned that she "gave my dog an X-ray as well...I hope you don't mind" After waiting for over 3 hours being, reaching almost midnight, and with work the next morning I was very unhappy. Even more unhappy when I came to find out that for a dose of antibiotics, a three hour wait, and an unauthorized Xray - I was out $600! I called the hospital the next day to discuss the Xray, the receptionist was VERY VERY nice and helpful - and even stated herself that it was unusual they didn't run it by me before doing not ONE but TWO X-rays. She put me in touch with one of the Hospital Admins, Gilbert, who was unfortunately very short and rude, telling me that every patient signs a form when they walk in that says the Vets are allowed to perform ANY testing they feel is "medically necessary" He said he would be able to credit me at cost which took $90 off of the $200 charge. While I appreciate that greatly, I have a big problem with a vets office that is allowed to charge patience ANY cost if they see fit. Will not be returning, do not suggest AT ALL unless you love throwing money away! Will say again though, the receptionist are SO nice and helpful. Read Less

A compassionate emergency veterinary hospital that is very well organized. As soon as you call in they immediately ask if it's an emergency and if so, they immediately handle your call without putting you on hold. Everyone here is very kind, very compassionate and they want the very best for your pet. They usually run on time, but like any emergency place you may have to wait a little while. Everyone does their very best to be sensitive to your needs, when your pet is ill or in an emergency situation. It's too bad human ER rooms don't take lessons from this vet. Patients would have much better care, far fewer complaints and humans would be much more grateful. This is veterinary medicine at its best with on staff internists, as well as oncologists as well as a rotating staff existing vets that are getting specialized training. I just cannot say enough good things about SCVSH. Read Less

This can be a very long story from the time my 3-year-old, 3 lb. Yorkie showed signs of neurological issues, the process it took to see my vet, get referred to a different specialist hospital (which couldn't see us for another 4-5 days) only to rely on a Google search for immediate care from a neurologist, to getting treatment and see the amazing progress/recovery my dog has displayed - I could not say enough kind words about this place. To put this in simple terms, my dog was suffering from inflammation in the brain, which sometime just happens in small dogs. She was walking different, head was slouched down to the right as if she is staring at the floor, she would accidentally do summer salts when drinking water or eating, and was afraid to go down the stairs for the same reason. She also couldn't blink her right eye (right side facial paralysis). It was obvious her neurological health and function was declining rapidly within a period of hours. My wife and I had to take immediate action. Southern California Veterinary Specialist Hospital was the only place on a Saturday that offered to see her even though they were busy. After an overnight stay, an MRI and spinal tap performed, the doctor identified the problems and the prescriptions needed for my fur baby. In a very short amount of time, she was back to herself and her right eye is blinking again in less than a couple of weeks. My experience with Dr. Berry and staff was top notch. They were amazing and displayed professionalism throughout this experience. We just had our first follow up since this traumatic experience and things are looking bright for Belaire, my baby Yorkie. Huge thanks to Dr. Berry and staff!!! We are eternally grateful for Dr. Berry's knowledge and experience for this situation. Read Less

Was referred here from the garden grove vet to see an oncologist for my dogs diagnosed osteosarcoma cancer of the bone unfortunately he has it in the mouth.  The check in process was great, front counter staff was very attentive in getting my registration paperwork together prior to my appointment with oncologist. They took my boy Kalimi & I to one of the rooms, the assistant doing her residency came in and briefly did a history background of my dog and the. The oncologist came in.  She gave me all the information pertaining to the disease that I already knew looking it up on the Internet. I was a little disappointed that they didn't already have my dogs blood work and X-rays Etc from my veterinarian, I had offered to get all these document for them prior to my appointment but was told that they would have it all and not to worry.   I did however reassured to my decision on what was to be done for my dog.  Having them remove the left side of his jaw is not the quality of life I want for him and she couldn't tell me if the cancer had spread to his lungs or his limbs.  I felt my appointment could've gone better with my dogs X-rays but overall I'm ok.  My pups life is declining and I will soon have to make the hardest decision to letting him go into the gates of doggy heaven.  He's 8yrs old red nose Pitbull and he was the most well behaved dog visiting the vet that day, I was a very proud Momma lol.  I'm gonna miss this little boy, he's brought so much joy and love to my life. Love you KalimiSide note:  the check out area was a little depressing watching people open up care credit to care for their dogs in paying of the vet bill.  I wish you all the best and hope for more affordable plans for dog care for everyone. When Dr Pettigrew examined my dog I was pleased with his professionalism (I was not happy about the one hour wait beyond my scheduled appointment) but when I called twice with a question for him - the day after he saw my dog and the following day - I talked to someone at the reception desk and they said they would convey my question to him. It was a simple question that concerned the cause of my dog's illness - a question I had forgot to ask when I saw the doctor. He never called me back and I had to speak to another Veterinarian to get the answer to my question. I am angry that such a simple response would be ignored when the health of my dog is concerned. I took my little dog to Southern California Veterinary Specialty Hospital in the middle of the night. I found out later, this place has been in the news and has changed their name multiple times! First let me point out... Upon walking in, a document is shoved in my face with big bold letters. HOW MUCH ARE YOU WILLING TO SPEND TO SAVE YOUR PET. They want a number so they can charge you that amount. After receiving a drug from another emergency vet the same night, my dog immediately started panting and having problems breathing. Instead of taking her back to the vet who gave her a medication she should not have had bc of a heart murmur, I took her here. First thing they ask is for $1000 up front fee. I believe they knew she was going to die when they initially assessed her. Instead of telling me this. They sent me home. Had I stayed at least she could have died in my arms. Or been put to sleep while in my comfort. I get home and the doctor calls. Dr. Katherine Kramer. I'll get to her in a minute.. She asked me if I would like to put her on a breathing machine. She would have to be anesthetized. Again, not a good call for a dog with a heart condition. I told her absolutely no! Why would I put her at even more risk? After I tell her I don't want to do that, she calls back 10 minutes later to say my baby girl passed. They knew she was going to die, but instead of letting her die in my arms they gave me false hope, so I leave her there to rack up the bill. This doctor clearly saw dollar signs. As for Dr. Katie Kramer, DVM. I have never met anyone so smug in my life. And btw she has NO SPECIAL TRAINING. she's just a regular vet with no ethics. I am in the most pain I've ever felt. This place didn't help and I would not ever go back there. Both of my primary care vets read over these reports and BOTH have said they would have suggested euthanasia. Instead, my little dog suffered by suffocating to death, alone. I have filed a complaint with the CA. Veterinary Board. Read Less

As a national pet and health journalist who interviews doctors and veterinarians daily, I have some experience in discerning who should take care of my cats. I have been with Dr. Julie Stegeman for 15 years and would not entrust my babies to anyone else when it comes to internal medicine in SoCal. When a pet is in peril, we want only the best and this is it: Specialty care is the way to go when a general veterinarian can no longer manage complex conditions. Also, in a dire, life-threatening emergency, it is good to know where to go BEFORE something happens, and this is the place. If you do not have pet insurance, GET IT. Enough said. You do not want to have to make a decision about "Can I afford this?" and to have to choose between life or death in an emotional moment. Read Less

After reading some of the negative reviews on here I wanted to post my positive experience. Our one year old kitty began suffering seizures late at night earlier this year. We took her to our local emergency animal clinic. They were unable to get her stabilized and told us that we would likely have to put her to sleep but if we wanted a second opinion to come to Southern California Veterinary Specialty. They were able to squeeze us in that morning because at that point our cat had experienced about 14 seizures in 12 hours. Dr. Berry and Dr. Korner were able to get her stabilized and diagnosed epilepsy after all trauma and toxin tests came back negative. She has been on phenobarbital since February and is healthier and happier than before she suffered the seizures. I am 100% certain that if it were not for this team we would have euthanized our cat for a controllable condition. Thank you Southern California Veterinary Specialty! Read Less

Southern California Veterinary Spec. Hospital has the WORST staff. I have been to the hospital twice. The first time I ever went there was a girl at the front desk who was extremely rude and unsympathetic! She apparently had complaints made about her before from other sources I choose not to disclose. The front desk receptionists are the first people you come in contact with when visiting any medical office, it was disgusting the way she acted. I was able to get in to the see very well known Dr. Barry and he was absolutely amazing! If this review was only about him I would have without a doubt put 5 stars. Today after seeing the one and only ophthalmologist, Cindy Mar. I have never in my many many years of having my dog (10+) met a more sterile, hard, and rude doctor in my life!!! She may have the smarts with her degree, but does NOT and I repeat does NOT have any bedside manners what so ever! She didn't introduce herself when meeting her for the first time, didn't greet my pet, had an attitude from the start as well as her bland/rude tech. Makes sense the two went together! She grabbed my dogs face and started prodding at her without a word. didn't speak to her or myself. I am DISGUSTED with this Dr. MAR. Terrible, terrible doctor.Read Less

I felt like I had a team to support me, and I knew my dog was in excellent hands during his hospital stay. 3.5 months post-op, my dog is able to play, walks several miles a day, and is happy and pain free. I don't even want to think about what his outcome would have been had I not found Dr. Pettigrew and SCVSH. Thanks so very much, to ALL of you. Sincerely, Jenny McCann (and Olaf.)Read Less

Our year old Elkhound developed anemia (IMHA primary) seemingly overnight after we returned from vacation. Not only did Dr Rossi refrain from jumping to a quick diagnosis, she always laid out a game plan, and had a staff member contact us twice a day while our pup was in their care 24/7 for a week. Dr Rossi even used her own dog to keep costs down for us since it was her 4th transfusion. Still, she and the staff at SCVSH, continue to provide the utmost care and professionalism for our dog. I'm starting to believe that my pup enjoys her occasional check-ups with the staff and Dr Rossi. I'm glad our personal vet recommended them to us and that Dr Rossi took the case. Read Less

Performed thousands in unnecessary medical procedures on my dog due to broken MRI and arrogance (was 'certain' what the issue was). Eventually used MRI to determine that situation was terminal and had to euthanize dog after a lot of unnecessary pain and suffering. Tried to get ahold of manager "Gilbert' numerous times without success (no replies to 5 emails or in person visit - 'he told my bank/vet that he tried to contact me'). I would never recommend this place to anyone; expensive, arrogant, unfair, crooks. I am very sad that this is the last place my dog saw before he was put to eternal rest. Read Less

Like any new dog parents, we attempted to cut the nails of our one year old corgi. And like new parents, we cut too deep and he was bleeding profusely (at least thats how we felt). So we went on a full panic mode and took him to emergency room of SCVSH 9pm on a Saturday night. My wife was holding him crying when we arrived so Sheena, one of their staff, calm us down first then hold him and brought him into a room while we were left outside filling out paperwork. Not 10 minutes later, here comes running out our little corgi. He was happy and smiling, like nothing happened. And Sheena told us that she stopped the bleeding and cleaned up. Wow, that was amazingly fast and painless. So I whip out my wallet and ready to pay the damages for our stupidity. Thats when Sheena told us NO CHARGE. What? Arent we in the emergency room? And dont we look like two stupid parents that will pay anything, 9pm on a Saturday night? It could be a scam, so I asked again. She said - NO CHANGE, dont worry about it. It was not too difficult (yeah, her entire cloth was covered with corgis hair so I can imagine the struggle). With disbelieve, we walked out of the emergency with our jaws dropped. Unbelievable, I wish all human hospitals emergency room was this nice. So we marked this hospital on our cars GPS, on our phones google map, and told our kids and friends to do the same. Read Less

I usually don't feel the need to write reviews unless I really feel in my heart strongly about it. I just went to this vet hospital today in tears because it seems like my dog was having some kind of head trauma. I was referred to come here to see the neurologist. When I get there the staff at the front desk her unfriendly and rude. They brought us back to a room and made us sit there for over an hour and a half only for the doctor to come in and tell me nothing. She said non of his signs indicated anything that jumped out at her but there was obviously something wrong. Really?? I could have diagnosed that! She offered to do some blood work and keep in to watch him and I was so worried that I agreed. When I got to the paperwork they wanted $750 up front and just for blood work they wanted $1800 total. I told them I needed some financial assistance and she rolled her eyes at me and basically said they needed it up front in order to keep him. I told her I couldn't and she basically made me feel super guilty. She told me I was agreeing to no care for him and made me sign a paper saying I was threatening his life by not taking their advice for care. What advice?? You didn't give me any! I even asked for a cup for water because my head hurt and the girl ignored me why she chatted. I don't think this place cares at all about the animals they treat and are only after money. As I was leaving I heard another angry couple storm out as well. Don't go to this place. They are careless and I wouldn't trust them with your pet! Read Less

I took my pet to Southern California Veterinary Specialty Hospital/Irvine Regional Animal Emergency Hospital for an examination-I gave specific instructions to the doctor to please be very gentle with him as he was fragile. I took my pet home after the exams and later that evening he developed bloat. I had no idea what this was and No-one said this was a possibility. I rushed him back to the hospital where they "de-bloated" him (another traumatic procedure). The doctor released him to me and even still I was not told about the seriousness of this condition or that he could die if he was to re-bloat again and not be close to the facility for treatment. Well, he re-bloated the next morning and taken to the hospital where hours later my pet suffered several heart attacks and died a very traumatic death. I was very disappointed with the care given by this facilities staff and Dr.'s Christopher Eich, Courtney Zwahlen, and Lara Ashbran. Read Less

For the sake of your beloved pet, I urge you to avoid Southern California Veterinary Specialty Hospital/Irvine Regional Animal Emergency Hospital, and to please read this warning. I took my dog to this hospital for a routine examination by Dr. Christopher Eich, in which he subsequently recommended x-rays, ultra-sound and prostate tissue aspiration, which are routine tests. I gave authorization to proceed and gave Dr. Eich specific instructions, telling him 3 times for emphasis, to please be very gentle with my elderly dog as he was old and fragile. I left my dog in his and his assistant's ""care"" for approximately 5 hours for what I was assured were routine tests, and returned to the clinic later that day to pick him up and take him home. Later that evening, he developed stomach ""bloat"" as a result of being mistreated and mishandled while at this clinic. I had no idea what ""bloat"" was, and during our consultation, Dr. Eich never mentioned that this could potentially occur during his tests. I rushed my dog back to the hospital where Dr. Lara Ashbran ""de-bloated"" him (another traumatic procedure). Dr. Ashbran released him to me and failed to instruct me as to the seriousness and lethality of stomach bloat, and that he would likely ""re-bloat"" and die if he was not close to the clinic to be ""de-bloated"" again. Well, he re-bloated early the next morning and was rushed back to the hospital where hours later my dog suffered several heart attacks and died a very painful and traumatic death as a direct result of the bloating due to the traumatization he received at this hospital the previous day. I was devastated and very disappointed with the treatment my dog received by this hospital's staff, specifically Dr.'s Christopher Eich and Lara Ashbran, and urge anyone who cares for the well being of their pet to seek testing and treatment elsewhere. When you bring your pet to a veterinary hospital, you assume that your pet will be handled gently, and will receive expert care. That is after all what you're paying them for, and their professional duty as well. I've learned now that this should never be automatically assumed. Because of the errors, mistreatment and mishandling done by Dr. Eich, Dr. Ashbran, and the staff at this hospital, my dog suffered an unimaginably horrific, drawn-out and painful death. I'm still grieving more than 2 years later. Dr. Eich even later admitted to me that elderly, large-breed dogs such as my Chow are susceptible to bloating if flipped on their back as would occur during an x-ray or other type of exam, and that he should have recalled this prior to performing these tests on my dog. Still, he never apologized for this lethally catastrophic error of his. I wouldn't mind his arrogance if he had the comptency to back it up. However, in Dr. Eich's case, it's just arrogance masking gross incompetence. Oh, and don't be swayed by your general practitioner vet recommending this hospital for specialty treatment. Be aware that various forms of kick backs and ""quid pro quo"" are most likely pervasive. I urge everyone to take their pet elsewhere for veterinary care. I only wish I had known this before it was too late. Read Less

Southern California Veterinary Specialty Hospital provided questionable care and horrible service compared to other critical care Animal Hospital our dog was treated at. The other hospital stabilized his condition, and he showed continued improvement during the three days they had him. Unfortunately, we were advised to transfer our dog to Southern California Veterinary Specialty Hospital for supposed “specialized” care, but after just 24 hours at Southern California Veterinary Specialty Hospital his condition worsened dramatically. The other hospital gave us constant updates on his condition, answered all our questions in great detail, gave us access to the doctor treating our dog anytime of the day or night, allowed us to view his treatments in the room where he was actually being treated, and gave us a seven page highly detailed report upon discharge. Southern California Veterinary Specialty Hospital hardly ever called us with updates, the doctor rarely returned our calls, they never allowed us to see where he was being treated, we had to call ahead and make appointments to see our dog, the staff was vague and evasive, and gave us a measly page and a half final report. While we were considering moving him back to the first hospital he died. We found Dr. Simpson to be rude and insulting to us throughout the two days he treated our dog, and he continued his rude attitude even after our dog’s death. We are currently considering filing a complaint with the California Veterinary Medical Board. Now we know why they have changed the name of this place a couple times, probably to cover up their poor track record. Read Less

Read Less

I was expressing that I was not pleased with the process and wanted some clarification on how the office was so poorly run. I will never refer them, nor will I ever come back.

Read Less

Told me to take her home and  sleep it offI asked if they recommend if i leave her there for over night super vision and she goes "for what"i asked her what signs or behaviour i should be aware of if i need to bring her back later and she goes no. asked her how long shell feel uncomfortable for she said, " I don't know"did NOT make me feel at ease or any useful information of course had to pay because it was after hours.RUDE extremely RUDE and insensitive. I was referred to this hospital by a local vet when my kitty Possum had a neurological emergency. Upon entering the hospital, each person I encountered was professional yet compassionate. Action was taken without waiting and they continued to serve other clients there for regular non-emergent appointments. The hospital is well staffed and clean. I received regular calls from Dr Simpson to explain possum's situation in detail. My kitty is doing much better and while she is not out of the woods, I have a clear understanding of the plan ahead. I would feel very comfortable leaving any of my pets in the care of this hospital. Read Less

Such disregard of the concerns for the health and well being of a member of my family is inexcusable. Read Less

Dr. Pettigrew and staff are amazing! He was more than willing to try conservative treatment for our dog, Olaf, a 3 year old maltipoo with an inflamed disc (it ultimately proved to be protruding, and pressing on the nerve.) After a few months of medical management, we agreed that Olaf was not going to be able to life a pain-free life, or enjoy an active lifestyle without surgery. I never felt pressured, only informed, throughout my many visits and phone calls. While in the hospital, the entire staff was compassionate and understanding of my concerns about my pup. I felt like I had a team to support me, and I knew my dog was in excellent hands during his hospital stay. 3.5 months post-op, my dog is able to play, walks several miles a day, and is happy and pain free.

Read Less
