On a Friday night, after hours, my 83 year old mother-in-law gets a voicemail from the office relating the blood work she had on her sick, elderly dog. The news was devastating for her because it was so negative. There was nothing she could do, no one to talk to. I think it was callous and cold to do this to an old lady, and a paying customer - someone who met with the doctor and who the office knew was old and cared about her dog tremendously. When I helped her take her dog into the clinic the day before, the front desk mixed up and the medication for the animal and the bill. I would NEVER recommend this place to anyone. Amazing staff and doctor A is seriously one if the most genuine and professional vets ive ever had. I went to affordable care and they tried ripping me off for close to $4k-5k. They wanted to perform 2 surgeries one for a "mass" that came out in his tummy on the x-ray and one to repair a torn knee ligament that they said absolutely needed to be done. I went in for a second opinion at bixby and that "mass" turned out to be gas! And no torn ligament just probably over extended. My pup is doing just fine! His knee is fine and he runs like crazy at the dog park with his friends. They wanted to operate and cut my dog open twice for absolutely no reason. Thank God for bixby animal clinic. We came here for a second opinion on a bump that was on my dogs leg. My first vet had told me that it was a tumor without even taking a biopsy and walking me through any information. Bixby animal clinic was kind, patient and advised me to not make my dog through surgery bc the bump was not a tumor. I am so thankful I got a second opinion and so thankful I came here. My 18+ year old cat developed a UTI with constipation, to boot. She has been in renal failure and needed to be seen ASAP, but none of the vets close to me, even ones I had been to before (I didn't bother with the awful ones I wouldn't ever go back to) could see her within the next week. I tried Bixby based on the Yelp reviews even though it's a little further away. They were empathetic and were able to squeeze her in the next morning.They didn't keep us waiting, and the staff was polite and explained everything and the vet we saw was young and listened to us and took her time with our senior kitty. She explained everything she felt was needed to restore the cat to health and suggested which things were necessary, and why, and other items that were "good ideas," but weren't needed immediately, if cost was a consideration. She didn't push or try to shame and guilt us into care that might be good to consider, but could wait to see if antibiotics might work first.Also, the place was clean and they had a place for a kitty that was adoptable to hang out. Razberry was the official greeter! The parking in back was adequate although the clinic was not much to look at from this entrance off Atlantic Avenue.  However, the interior was welcoming and the waiting area was large enough to feel safe when several larger dogs came in.I believe I will be able to return here with confidence in the care my companion animals will receive. We came in because our normal vet was booked for several days. The office smells like urine. They have a Yelp promo for free flee treatment for a month for a review. I'll def go pick mine up after I post this ;) The promo probably explains the high reviews..  I wasn't impressed. The vet didn't give much info. I had to keep asking. Ultimately she said we needed a surgical procedure and quoted $500. The procedure was to have a lump removed.. but we don't know if the lump is cancer, a cyst or a blister. The vet wasn't very warm and made a lot of faces. Expressions don't help, information helps. We are going back to our normal vet for a second opinion. Read Less

The staff and Dr. very nice and helpful. My dog had a major eye surgery and they offered to keep her over night without cost as she is 13 years old. When I went to pick her up, she was taking a nice walk with a really sweet young man. You can totally tell they are animal folks and your pet will be cared for. Good folks.... Read Less

Everyone was very nice but this was the highest vet bill I've ever received! The service was very slow!I was referred by Golden Humane society so I thought this place was low cost. I was okay once I found out that it wasn't because usually my vet bills aren't too expensive. Even though they discussed the treatment plan and cost beforehand I wasn't expecting to pay $630 for x-rays and one bottle of pain medication. I've been to other vets before and have gotten x-rays and blood work done for much cheaper. Dr. Hoffman gave Obi the most thorough exam I've ever seen. He had pancreatitis so he was squealing in pain throughout the night. I was very grateful that they were open on Sunday but I feel like I definitely paid for the convenience. She listened to his breathing and thoroughly examined every part until she determined it was near the abdomen.I got there at 11am and didn't leave until after 1. The wait times between the vet and the techs were really long. The x-rays took forever, everything just moved very slowly. I believe he was supposed to get some low fat food but the lady who checked it out didn't mention it. I don't know if the doctor or tech communicated with the front desk but the food wasn't mentioned so I just changed his food on my own. I also had to go buy pepcid for him which is OTC so the bill didn't include everything. I was also supposed to hear back about his bloodwork but I didn't get a call back!I was happy that I was able to get him seen quickly but I don't think I paid a fair price for the slow service and breakdown of communication. I didn't get any food recommendation, I never heard back from the clinic about the results of the bloodwork, and I still had to go buy more medicine after. My dog Ariel had a major leg injury n we had taken her to another vet who was not very helpful n told us she might loose her leg, after 2-3 weeks of constant nonsense with that Vet and feeling really upset/worry/frustrated we didnt trust our Vet n decided it was time to get a 2nd opinion, my husband and were immediately impress with Dr A's professionalism, he took the time to explain our options n prognosis, we knew right away he cared and wanted to help us. Dr. A is the best Vet I've worked with! He is very knowledgeable and very sensible. His approach to animal care is extremely valuable to me. I want the best care for my pets, BUT I'm not into the extraordinary treatments that may not benefit them. My Yorkie Angel had extreme breed specific health issues. She enjoyed a long healthy and sane life. Thanks to Dr. A. She had the very latest sensible treatments and was happy, healthy and BOSSY until the last day of her 18 years. On one of her last days, we needed to see Dr. A, but he had already left the office and was up in LA. He turned his car around, asked us to wait for him, and he came back to the clinic. Very caring Dr. Our Terrier mix Chewy was a biter. They treated him with kindness, love and respect and we never had an incident at BAC. Under Dr A's care, Chewy happily lived to 18, enjoying his life until the last day. Can't recommend Dr. A and BAC highly enough.Read Less

Bixby has been there for me and Gizmo since day 1! The staff is very friendly, compassionate, professional and trustworthy. The facility is very clean. The care is somewhat pricy, (but it's pure quality)! I wouldn't trust my cat with any other vet out there.Read Less

I haven't wrote a review on this company for the past year because it's been so hard to not completely fall apart being that my cat died last year because the owner/vet could not deal with explaining instructions on what to do with my cat's medications. He just didn't want to bother explaining anything including why he changed dosage instructions with the pharmacy but didn't feel it was necessary to advise me being that I was the one giving the medication to my cat. My cat was 20 years old, he was everything to me. If you are a pet lover, I hope you can understand that you want the best for your pets. You need the information necessary to treat, even if its just little things because we're not professionals. If we are going to give our animals medications we need to know how much, how often and how to do it. I get all my pet medications through 1800PetMeds. This clinic does not like that. They want you to pay five times as much with them, of course that's how they get their money by overpricing everything including the visits. 1800PetMeds repeatedly told me that they could not prescribe the medications that the treating vet filled because the owner/vet decided to change the dosage and quantities when the pharmacy called to verify the prescription. Of course my cat went without his medication for almost a month because the owner didn't want to give me the time of day to explain what the new instructions were. I was so pissed off, they were messing around with an elderly animal's health. Of course they don't care its not their cat, its my cat and I kept him alive for 20 years and wanted to make sure he had a good quality of life and they want to screw around with his meds and not advise me! That guy was the last person I wanted to deal with and I didn't even know he was the owner until I called to find out about the medication refill for my other cat. He answered the call and I remembered his name and requested to speak to someone else or a supervisor, that's when he told me he was the owner and I knew then that this wasn't going to end well. I'm watching my cat dying in front of me and my other 20 year old cat is sick and needs his medication as well. I was to far gone with anger with that man for not caring enough to provide information that he told the manager to refuse treatment for my animals and told me to go somewhere else. For that moment all I could feel is that I wanted them to burn in hell for treating two sick elderly animals with no compassion or kindness. To know they are suffering and I am suffering watching them suffer and I couldn't do anything to help them because this owner did not want to explain his actions. There was no sympathy/empathy for him, there was no explanation he's going to provide for changing things his way, there was no instructions on what I needed to do. I never got the medications my cat needed. My cat died two weeks later. He couldn't walk, he couldn't eat, he couldn't go to the bathroom and within 24 hours he went blind. This is a pain I will live with the rest of my life knowing that my cat died because I chose to go here instead of finding a place where they care for the animals they treat and help the owners to keep them healthy and happy. I lost my baby, he was everything to me and now our other cat, barely a year later is dying. I'm doing this review now because I'm realizing that some people out there who, like me, want every single detail to help their pets so they take care of them correctly, so they don't hurt them, so they can give them the best possible life with whatever treatment is needed. This isn't that place to get that info. They don't even want to explain what they plan on doing for a normal checkup visit so you know what your animal will go through, let alone explaining medication instructions. I keep seeing this place when searching for vet's in my area and all I feel is pain in knowing that my cat died because the owner could care less. Read Less

I can't say enough about how great this vet is. The receptionists were nice and the vet was so great, wayyyyy better then most medical doctors I've been to. He took his time to explain everything, didn't try and rush me out, even though it was a Saturday and they were busy. They even called me a few days later to follow up and see how my cat was doing. I found a doc for my 9 year old kitty. The office is clean & orderly,very nice. Alert reception,tech. Everyone is on target, no rushing but little wait.The doctor calm,listens,communicates,does not over prescribe and is very knowledgeable,very reasonable on price. You'll leave with a good feeling and so will your cute,adorable pet,in fact if you listen you may here him chuckle on the way home,my kitty did.P.S. reviews are important,they help the consumer and rewards the desevering people that run a honest, good business.
