Animal Medical Center

Los Angeles, California
General Info
The Animal Medical Center is staffed with a board-certified specialist, staff doctors with advanced training, highly qualified resident doctors, and accomplished paraprofessionals. Our technicians are committed to providing both the highest quality and most compassionate care possible to our patients. AMC presently employs over 20 technicians. Many have degrees in the study of veterinary technology (RVT). Our technicians work hand-in-hand with our veterinarians to ensure that your pet is closely monitored and kept comfortable. We treat our patients as if they are members of our own family. We are quite proud of our technical staff. All who get to know them are quickly impressed by the compassion they express for our patients, their knowledge of veterinary science, and their skill in handling sick and hurting animals.

The staff is more interested in giving you a "doom and gloom" scenario about your pet to make you believe that the outrageously high estimate would warrant the overnight stay & treatment close to an equivalent price of a human surgery. I want to trust that the lab results are from my dog and not other, but when the tech told me that only staff could go in the back to draw the blood sample, my trust went down the drain. The staff did not show any caring emotion whatsoever. I asked Bruno-the tech repeatedly to bring me my dog (my dog was not going to stay there). The dog was brought to me until the hefty bill was processed. In reality I would give this facility a NO Star or "ZERO"!! Read Less

Wish we had read these unhappy reviews prior to taking our puppy in for his hurt leg. we met with Dr. Schulman and 2 assts who while gaining our trust with their spiel of openess to homeopathic remedies and more conservative approach in treatment, really only sought to charge us for all they could get away with. we felt they took advanatage of our vulnerability, being distraught over our puppy and sucessfully convinced us that our 7 mo puppy needed injections of 1) Buprenorphine(a painkiller 30x more stronger than morphine and used to treat chronic pain), 2) Adequan(a interamuscular medication used to treat degenerative arthritis or osteoarthritis, degenerative joint disease) and recommended treated over a series of 8 injections,1/every 3to 4 days for it to take effect and optimal results 3) Deramoraxx( an oral medication equivalent to strong tylenol to take home but only given to our puppy after waiting 48 hrs bc he was already heavily drugged up from the visit, and further meds could complicate his well being. My best advice for those considering dr. schulman is to educate yourself on what to expect from a typical visit related to your pet and reason for the visit. Having awareness will give you some knowledges on the common treatment options available, related to your visit that also then helps you to make an educated decision on the treatment you want or DO NOT WANT for your pet. Personally, we plan on moving our pets records to another hospital. "Our pet" or "our puppy" was used here for anonymity. Read Less

The staff at this hospital is very caring and conscientious. Dr. Schulman is very professional and knowledgeable, not to mention compassionate, kind and very hard working. My dog was his patient for years... my dog was slowly deteriorating from arthritis and orthopedic issues and the staff here took excellent care of him. They treated him as if he were their own dog. I don't think people always realize how much the veterinarians, vet techs and staff have to deal with... people are in distress over their animals and emotions run high. We have taken the pups here for years but finally, their ridiculous prices, extra ordinary amount of unnecessary procedures (it is quite lucrative for them to always see zebras, instead of horses) and inconsistent doctoring is enough. If you go here, expect your dog to have to 'stay' for anything. After a diagnosis of death and 3,000 dollars and a surgery later... it will have been a simple splinter or ear infection. Dr. Schulman is by far the most knowledgeable veterinarian I've ever known. The VCA was responsible for death of my dog by not having functioning equipment during an emergency and rather than referring me elsewhere, they left my dog to suffer overnight. Since then I have only gone to AMC, specifically Dr. Schulman who's experience and knowledge has saved me thousands of dollars. He never suggests an unnecessary procedure. Pet lovers be aware - you may get ripped off by this Animal Center. Get a quote in an Email (in writing) and don't just get a quote on the phone or you may lose a lot of money. We scheduled a procedure to remove a both of our dog's toes with her regular vet but wanted to get it done earlier so we scheduled the procedure with Animal Medical Center. The secretary on the phone estimated that it will cost about $450-$500. So we came there and the staff was very nice and professional. After a the wait the vet checked the dog and the quote came to almost $1,300. We said that we will not pay that price from two reasons: 1. They quoted a price of about $450-$500 on the phone the day earlier! 2. Our vet quoted a price of $380 (without blood work - to make it apples to apples). On our way out shocked and upset with the time wasted time and due to the fact that we almost got ripped off, the secretary called us and said that since the vet saw the dog we must pay $69 in an office visit fee. We were very angry and asked them to waive the fee from all the reasons specified above but after talking to the vet (I believe Dr, Schulman) , the technician came out and said that they will not waive this fee since the dr. in their centre is a board certified surgeon. Bottom line - Thanks god we live in America and there are other vets that are honest, straightforward, reasonable, fair and professional and that DO WHAT THEY SAY THEY WILL DO! I just feel bad that other pet owners who may not know that they can get what they need for their beloved pets for a lot less. It is so good to know I will never step a foot in this place ever again!!! Read Less

I had been going to AMC on and off for 6 years. Last week - I brought a 5 week old puppy in that we had rescued from the shelter 4 hours prior. The shelter told me he was "dehydrated" but I decided to take him in (after hours) to be examined and receive fluids and a B12 shot. He looked pretty critical and was painful to the touch. emaciated and dehydrated. Sadly for me - Dr. Van Volkenburgh was on duty. She walks in and tries to grab the blanketed puppy from my arms. I explained how delicate he was and asked to take him to the back to examine him. She returned 4 mins later telling me that I would not walk out of there for less than $1000-$1500. Along with the fluids I had requested - she wanted to do the full workup on him - X-rays, blood work. I explained I did not have that kind of money available and would rather stabilize him through the night and take him to my rescue friendly vet in the morning - she LITERALLY ROLLED HER EYES AT ME. Long story short - they charged $750 for 9 hours of hospitalization and and IV/vitamins. When I called her to check in in the AM she coldly told me he was not going to make it and ---- how would I like to dispose of the body? She was hands down the rudest, most frigid vets I have ever had the misfortune of dealing with. 3 years ago - Dr. Campbell improperly aspirated a lump on my dog - (choosing to do only one aspiration verses the more common practice of aspirating multiple times). The $400 test for lymphoma came back as inconclusive. When I took him to another vet - they were able to tell me within 1 week that my dog had lymphoma. Because of Dr. Campbell's improper diagnostic skills - I lost 3 weeks of treatment that may have helped my dog. I don't doubt they did all the appropriate on the 5 week old puppy. But - they surely don't treat their clients with kindness. They lost my business for good this time. Read Less

Since then I have only gone to AMC, specifically Dr. Schulman who's experience and knowledge has saved me thousands of dollars. He never suggests an unnecessary procedure. He always treats with conservative methods initially, saving surgical procedures for the very last option. My dogs are actually excited to go to the vet. They trust and love the staff! Read Less

Read Less

This hospital and it's staff gave my kitty Rocky excellent care during a very difficult time. Not only were they great to Rocky, but me as well while I tried my best to give Rocky everything he needed while he was having some sort of mental issues. I was 5 months pregnant at the time, and the stress of the situation was horrible. Every single staff member we encountered was wonderful. Whether by phone or in person, everyone went above and beyond to help us. I wish all businesses had that level of compassion and caring that we were shown! Read Less
