Amazingly kind receptionists and vet staff - call before hand for a time that's not busy, it will make your life and their service much better! They will really look after your pet, my dog is always so stoked to visit. After nutering he wasn't feeling or acting his normal self, they asked us to bring him back in for a day. After that pick up he was the healthiest happiest pup I've ever seen. They even called a week after to see how he was doing. Their love and care for your pet really shows in my experience. Read Less

I use to think Dr. Carlson was a good vet regardless of his high prices until Now. My parents 12yr old dog had to be put down cause of a major issue. The issue is when it happen Dr Carlson wan unable to be reached on a Saturday. The Emergency Vet could not check in with him or the office about a major issue Dr. Carlson had just Biopsied.  Dr. Carlsen had a huge practice and no after hours availability. I have never found any type of Doctor who in a sever emergency could not be reached. So after 8-10 years and thousands of dollars of payment it seems like our dog was never really a true concern. Don't use this vet if your a real animal lover find a vet who can be reached on the weekend so your not putting them down based off an uninformed decision. Read Less

This review is coming from the standpoint of a potential new employee NOT a client. I submitted my resume 3 months ago, Feb. 2017, on indeed.com, a job search site.I was contacted by Erin at Carlsen Animal Hospital to set up an interview in May 2017, for a position of Veterinary Technician that was open. We scheduled the interview at 10 AM the following Monday. Before the interview could  take place I was offered and accepted another position at another animal hospital. As a COURTESY I called to cancel the interview. I was met on the phone by a woman named Lisa. I asked to speak to Natasha or Erin. She asked my name and the nature of my call. I stated my name and said that the nature of my call was a concern to Erin and Natasha, not her. She then repeatedly asked over and over why I was calling. I simply said, "may I please speak to Natasha or Erin."  She refused. She then asked me WHERE I was calling from, as if that were in any way relevant. I said I would call back later. I called back later and FINALLY spoke to Natasha. She began being surly and rude. I told her my name and she said, "I don't know who you are." I explained that I had set up an interview with Erin for the following Monday and I told her that Lisa was not professional and refused to let put me through to either her to Erin. I told Natasha that Lisa wanted to know where I was calling from and I did not think that was relevant to the conversation. Natasha became suddenly belligerent and said, "Well, we are a busy hospital." I told her why I was calling, to cancel my interview for Monday. Before I could even finish the sentence she said, "we are not hiring anyway," and hung up the phone in my ear.If this is the level of professionalism at this hospital, I am glad I did not have to deal with them. Again this is for potential applicants. If you can AVOID THIS PLACE LIKE THE PLAGUE. If they treat people like this scheduled for a mere interview, imagine how you will be treated as an employee. I dodged the bullet on this one. Read Less

Thank you Dr.Carlsen for saving my cat's life many years ago. He was bitten by a dog the first vet I took him to missed his broken jaw, Dr Carlsen spotted it and operated on my cat to save his life. My cat always felt at ease when Dr. Carlsen walked in the room. I could tell he thought he was ''cool'' and felt comfortable around him. Now I have a dog and she is four years old. For her birthday last year she got full blood work and a check-up from Dr. Carlsen. He is practical in what he recommends, he doesn't overmedicate or overtreat. I could go on and on. He was referred to me by two friends, both of them have been going to him for decades. I feel comfortable knowing I have a doctor who can help my dog if she has any health problems. Read Less

I like DR. Carlsen.   He is experienced and knowledgeable.   But I fear that his strong ego and confidence can get in the way of his providing the best care for dogs.     a) He mis-diagnosed our dog's inflammatory bowel disease as gastric reflux and prescribed Prilosec indefinitely.   (We now have it well under control under care of another vet and careful use of immune modulating drugs.)      2) He also mis-diagnosed our dog's polyneuropathy as a side effect from the flea med Advantix.    We spent 2 months waiting for the effect to wear off, under Dr. Carlsen's guidance.   Our dog went steadily downhill.   Fortunately, I pressed on and got the care of a specialist who did the right course of tests to make a solid diagnosis and treatment.     That could have been very damaging to my dog's limbs and nervous system if left untreated.    3) We had to get past a minor issue (not sure why this was such a deal with Dr. Carlsen) regarding a poorly trained (but very sweet) staff member who approaches rescue dogs much too quickly.     Lastly, there is an older staff member there Laura who should not be in a business that serves people who care for dogs.  She is abrupt, rude, incompetent.  Having said that, Several of the other staff ( Chelsea, Molly, Nicole) are very sweet and kind.     I hate having to leave a review like this as veterinarians in general are very special people. We followed Dr. Kimberly Bhuta to Carlsen Animal Hospital a couple of years ago. Dr. Bhuta is my go to for all of our dogs and cats health concerns. She's always on top of the best new treatments. She is presently helping us keep our 13.5 yo beagle with tonsillar SCC going strong- not easy, it's an aggressive, ugly cancer. We're 10 wks in and Alice could not be in better hands. Dr. Bhuta helps our cat Wally with chronic IBD. She's also kept a few of our rescued kitties alive when they were knocking on death's door. She also helped with an incontinent dog, a dog with a heart murmur. Another that throws cysts. When you have a lot of furry family members, you need a vet you trust. For us, it's Dr. Bhuta. Dr. Bhuta's a super hero in our household. Her super powers are her smarts and compassion. I cannot give her a stronger recommendation. Also, a huge shout out to the front desk and the vet techs at Carlsen. Erin, Lisa, Laura and Kelly and Carlos- these people make visits to Carlsen Animal Hospital a joy. Read Less

Dr. Carlsen is hands down the best vet I have ever worked with. He has been my vet for over 20 years and is one of the reasons I began a dog daycare way before it became the huge industry that it is today. Since I work in the dog care industry and do rescue work as well, I have had hundreds of dogs in his care and I have always found him to be insightful and efficient. He has been able to diagnose issues with laser like precision where other vets have been clueless and is always reasonable with his pricing. Our first interaction was when he came to lecture for the West LA Obedience Club. His lecture was very impressive and I asked him about a skin condition that my yellow lab, Casey, was suffering from. I had been to several vets and no one was able to diagnose the issue or find a solution. He nailed it on our first visit with him. I can only give him, and his staff, the highest recommendations.Read Less

I took my yorkie/poo mix to Dr. Carlsen in October 2013 for behavior problems (he was attacking our other dog because of anxiety issues). Dr. Carlsen prescribed a medicine called Reconcile (a dog form of prozac) for him. I bought a few bottles then and went back and bought more bottles from him and gave this medication to my dog for a number of months. Unbeknownst to me, this medication had been discontinued by the manufacturer because of inconsistency issues. I first found out about this from my sister in law (a vet in New Orleans), but trusted Dr. Carlsen and continued to give Reconcile to my pooch. My dog abruptly started to become aggressive again, attacking our other dog five to six times a day-more than he had before we started giving him medication, so I called the manufacturer who confirmed that, in fact, Reconcile had been discontinued in August, 2013 because of inconsistencies. I took my dog to our vet in Las Vegas (we have a second home there) and he was appalled that any vet would prescribe a discontinued and inconsistent medication. He gave me a better prescription for my dog, and the next time I was in LA I took the two unopened bottles of Reconcile back to Dr. Carlsen for a refund and left them there because he was out of town. They said they'd ask him and get back to me. It took over five months for a response, and they called this morning and said Dr. Carlsen would not refund the $138 ($69 a bottle) for the medication and wanted to know if I wanted them back. Really!?! Not only is this very bad business practice, it is. quite frankly, dumb. It's a $138...is he so desperate for cash that he prescribes bad medication and then won't make a refund for unopened bottles of this bad medication. Very scary on so many levels. I strongly urge you not to use this vet because he is untrustworthy, prescribes bad medication, and had bad business practices. My dog suffered unnecessarily because of him, and if he can make this kind of unscrupulous medical decisions for my dog, he can make them for your pet. PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS VET! I will say, however, that his staff is great and I appreciate them following up with me and trying to get him to do the right thing. Very sad that they couldn't succeed. Again...DON"T USE THIS VET!! The office manager, Dr Carlsen's wife, could improve on her customer relations. The same goes for other staff members who could be rude as well. As for Dr Carlsen, he is not the outstanding veterinarian that everybody thinks he is. He failed to see my dog was dying after the surgery and insisted on the dog to do exercises everyday. My dog died 5 days later after an unnecessary surgery that he recommended. Dr Carlsen is THE BEST diagnostician and vet in LA. I have worked with several vets in the LA area and every time it's complicated I make the 1 hour drive to see him. If I lived closer I would never use another vet. I've been going to Dr Carlsen for 17+ years and my pets have always had interesting challenges as I adopt the sickest ones at the shelter. I've presented him with some really tough cases over the years and pets that we originally thought would only live 6 months because of their poor health would live 2 or more years, happy and healthy all because of Dr Carlsen. He has an encyclopedic mind and doesn't over medicate. His team is also the best in town and many have been with him for a long time. It's refreshing to see long-term staff at a vet hospital, most have really high turnover and people with minimal experience. This team really knows their medicine and are great with pets and humans alike. They all work together to make the hospital the best in LA. You will not find a more skilled, knowlegable and kind veternarian than Dr. Carlsen. We were looking for a new vet and we were referred by a friend tha has been a very happy customer over 20 years. His staff is sweet courteous and very helpful. We took our 16 year old cat in due to an infection and abscess that sprang up over night. This was so very serious she could have easily died. It turned out she had a mild form of diabetes, Dr. Carlsen performed the extraction and it healed beautifully. Dr. Carlsen had been working with us to get her health back on track via diet before resorting to insuling shots. She has been doing excellent, her energy has come back and she is happy with a voracious appetite. We then had the unfortunate luck of another cat getting very sick a weel later. It was my sister's 8 year old cat we had adopted. The cat was lethargic and lissless. We thought he had eaten something to make him ill. We took the cat to another vet as Dr. Carlsen's office was closed on the weekend and  the vet gave him the wrong type of hydration (had an additive that was not appropriate for his condition) and insulin; By Monday morning he was almost dead. We took him in to Dr. Carlsen's office at first thing where he was hospitalized for 3 days. It turns out he was in a diabetic coma and had swelling on the brain due to the wrong treatment. His loving staff gave our cat round the clock care and while he still has a bumpy road to being 100% he is so much better and regaining his energy. We expect him to have a great recovery and the Dr. said we should be able to get him back to health without out the reliance on insluin shots by making some adjustments to his diet. Dr. Carlsen had saved the life of two of our cats. If you want to deal with a vet that really knows his stuff, Dr. Carlsen is the vet for you Read Less

Behold the snake charmer. My dog and I dodged a major bullet today by seeking out a second opinion of a diagnosis given by the legendary William Carlsen DVM. Long and short of it is that the good doctor recommended a very invasive, complicated not to mention costly opthalmic procedure for my dog. He diagnosed it as an "indolent corneal ulcer" that required a grid keratotomy so it would heal. Yes my dog had an ulcer on his cornea. However, urged by friends to seek a second opinion I saw Dr. Chang at VCA just 18 hours later. After a very thorough exam of the eye including the back of the eye and optic nerve, Dr. Change determined the ulcer had healed and the procedure was completely unnecessary.I am disgusted by Dr. Carlsen. He is wreckless and obviously had no business diagnosing the eye. Or perhaps he saw a ripe opportunity to profit from a pet owner's vulnerability. I know he is regarded as a god in the animal community. I think he is closer to a greedy demon. Even assuming he made a diagnostic mistake, turns out he has no business performing a grid keratotomy on a pinpoint ulcer with the equipment he has in his office.I stopped seeing Carlsen about 7 years ago after a dental cleaning he did turned out to be more than double the estimate he gave me. Turns out my instincts were right. Had my vet not sold her practice this year I would not have returned to him but with just a re-check I figured it would be simple enough.I know he has countless loyal followers who are charmed by his good looks and immaculate office. For those of you considering going to him I would beware and always seek the second opinion of a specialist. Read Less

Dr. Carlsen cared for my dogs for over 12 years (one of them from cradle to grave) and I can honestly say he does an outstanding job.  My animals liked him and his staff and even tolerated boarding with them on occasion, which considering how cowardly my pups could be, says a lot about the caring and humane atmosphere of the place. His ability does have its drawbacks: his patients make it very difficult for Carlsen Animal Hospital to expand its practice beyond the eponymous proprietor; I have seen several qualified, able vets join the practice only to leave again, because hardly anyone would see them in place of Dr. Carlsen.  During the times when he has been away for some reason, the office is empty and quiet; every other day, though, it resembles Times Square on New Year's Eve, only without Ryan Seacrest and his dye job.  Given the great demand for his services, and the insufferably self-entitled attitudes of his West Side clientele, Dr. Carlsen can charge a premium for his goods and services, and he does so unblushingly.  However, I have to say that he never had me regretting the fees I paid; rather, I felt thankful to have such a talented vet and a compassionate person in my and my dogs' corner. The parking lot is small, and the wait can feel long.  For goodness sake give the other vet(s) there a try and you'll get in and out much quicker.  But if you simply must have Dr. Carlsen, you'll never look back once you get in to consult with him. I don't know what some of the people who left poor reviews were thinking but I have never had anything but a great experience with Dr Carlsen. He has been kind, compassionate and very upfront about all my animals. I bring my 2 chihuahuas here as well as the rescue dogs I pull from the shelter and have never been steered wrong or over charged. As a matter of fact Dr Carlsen caught some problems that another vet who shall remain nameless did not and for another dog did some major surgery for about 2/3 the price the "other vet" quoted me. He gives discounts to my staff when they bring in rescue dogs and every client I have ever referred there raves about him.  Prices don't seem out of line at all and when it comes down to it even if they were higher than normal who wouldn't be willing to pay a bit more to ensure their pet is well taken care of, properly diagnosed and properly treated? I was very unhappy with Dr Carlsen and staff when I took my pet there a few years back.  If you are a client now, notice how Dr Carlsen takes your pet away from you to do blood tests, injections etc and that is a warning sign that they are being handled roughly. You should be present at all times for any test your pet is undergoing. Also, what pained me the most was how roughly he treated my cat when someone else brought him in because I was at work. Dr Carlsen was annoyed and he just forced my sick cat to walk and pee by pressing on its bladder, all the while complaining to my friend that he has an appointment to go to and he is making him late. For all the stress he caused to  me and my cat, he further brought on more trauma to my pocketbook because Dr Carlsen is one of the  most expensive Vets around the city.Avoid this Vet if you love your animals dearly. In reading the one review I realized the other review in this section is someone who probably never even met Dr. Carlsen and has never been a customer. Most reviews for this veterinarian are under Carlsen Animal Hospital and are for the most part pretty positive. True B. is obviously a professional reputation wrecker - because this is a pro trick - just make up a new category for the Dr. and low and behold he gets one star!My experience is that I have been taking my cats to Carlsen Animal Hospital for over 12 years. One cat died at 18 1/2  and the other is still alive and 19 1/2. I have found Dr. Carlsen (the clinic) to be reasonable and that the owner Dr. Carlsen is kind, intelligent and really, really cares about my animals. He also recommends a lot of cool natural remedies and avoids unnecessary interventions. I know that this Dr. will sometimes work 7 days a week, fully dedicated to the care of his patients and it pisses me off when a person like True B. plays this kind of dirty, thoughtless trick. Why not put your review next to all the others? Read Less

I have never found any type of Doctor who in a sever emergency could not be reached. So after 8-10 years and thousands of dollars of payment it seems like our dog was never really a true concern. Read Less

I like DR. Dr, Carlsen became our vet in 1997 after we adopted two cats from the shelter.  He saw us through spay and neuter, brain cancer in one and old age in the other.  He has always been amazing and a guide through some difficult decisions.  He may be costly but I think you get what you pay for.  When our first cat passed away, he made  a donation in her name to the study of feline brain cancers--who does that?  And by the way, when I started going to him, I was an assistant in hollywood making barely enough to pay my rent and the office always found a way to work with me. Have been going to Dr. Carlsen for years, with six different animals, four cats and two dogs. He has been nothing but kind, caring, and very, very smart. I, too, have had an excellent experience there and would recommend him highly. No,he's not the cheapest vet you could have, that's true. But I find him worth every penny. I feel very confident about his diagnoses and attention to my pets. I'd also like to add that his front office staff are smart, efficient and sympathetic. It's tough having a sick animal, but when I have to go there, I know they have their best chance to get well.Read Less

Always get a 2nd opinion as some veterinarians just do it for the money at the expense of the pet's health and your pocketbook. Avoid this veterinarian. Since my dog died, I've gone to another vet in the westside who is truly caring and well recommended by friends who own show dogs. My new cat and dog adores him. Read Less

My pets may go in nervous but they leave kissing everyone!Read Less

I took my cat Natasha to Dr. Carlsen starting in 1990 when I first got her and also took Rocky to him in 1991 when I rescued him from an owner who wasn't taking care of him.  Rocky was difficult for Dr. Carlsen and his staff to work with as his worst behavior would come out at the vet's.  However, when Rocky was diagnosed with cancer in 1999, Dr. Carlsen was very compassionate to my feelings as he knew how much I loved Rocky.  Dr. Carlsen told me to enjoy Rocky while I had him and estimated that Rocky would last another 3 months.  I took Rocky in to be put down when his suffering became obvious.  Dr. Carlsen even asked me if I wanted to be alone after giving Rocky his shot.Natasha on the other hand was very sweet, and the whole staff loved her.  She was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2001 and lasted until early November 2003.  I took her in to be put down when digestion had gotten too painful for her.  I think it was as hard on Dr. Carlsen as it was on me.  One of the staff people put me into an examination room with Natasha because I was crying in the waiting area.
