I am visiting the area with my dogs, one of whom has a chronic condition that we are managing with weekly acupuncture and various rehab modalities. His rehab vets back home recommended going on to the Canine Rehabilitation Institute website to find a practitioner nearby to continue his care while we are visiting my mom for the holidays. I was surprised that there were so few CVA's (Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist) in the area; luckily, the one I found practices here, just a 15-20 minute drive from my mom's house. With the mainly positive Yelp reviews for the veterinarians here I decided to go ahead and give them a try. I contacted them to try to set up a couple of visits over the 10 days we will be here, but was told that they do acupuncture on Wednesdays. Okay, Wednesday it is!We were able to schedule a visit with Dr. Siahpolo. We arrived early (because I wasn't sure how bad traffic might be) and were told that the doctor was running a little late, but it turned out not to be so bad. We were led to another building in the back, which had a pretty spacious floor area, a nice bed for the patient to lay on (though my dog preferred to lie on the carpet), and a sort of floor-pillow/futon thing that I suppose I could have sat upon if I wasn't comfortable on the floor. I was glad to hear that Dr. Siahpolo had reviewed the history that our regular Ft. Collins clinic had sent, and she asked further questions to clarify his history. She had frozen baby food at the ready to keep my dog occupied and settled while he was getting his needles. She explained that she practices traditional Chinese acupuncture rather than the medical acupuncture we are more familiar with, so it may seem a bit different than what we are used to, but honestly I guess I am not observant enough to discern the difference. As we were leaving she advised that my dog would likely be tired for the rest of the day, but that he should be feeling pretty good the next day. He did indeed fall right asleep in the car, and seems to be feeling great today. All in all, this was a really good experience for us, starting with the cute little "welcome" sign for new patients to the attentive care that my dog received. The only bummer for us was the limited availability of acupuncture visits -- I would have preferred to be able to get a couple of visits in -- one early in the week after getting in to town to help with travel-induced kinks, and another toward the end of the week to see us through the trip back home -- especially given that we had to do a new patient exam with its requisite fees. Hopefully, though, we should be set for future visits, and perhaps the acupuncture/rehab part of the business will continue to grow and open up further availability for the next time we are here.
