Took my pup for his yearly check-up... They were very nice and friendly, but seemed more interested in what they could up sell me on rather than going over the details of his physical. I don't think the vet even looked at his eyes and I had to ask her to check the lymph nodes around his groin - it should have been part of her "physical" routine I would think. Dr. Enke is a fantastic and very caring vet. Her whole staff is very knowledgeable and curteous, especially Randy! We feel like family there and wish we could bring them with us when we move out of state. As for the cats, they are all very friendly and there's no danger to them or your pet whatsoever. Very unprofessional and rude...  I just received a letter in the mail stating that your animal hospital no longer wants to service our dogs, they say it has come to their attention that the past few visits we have indicated displeasure with the services and cost.  First and foremost that is false, when speaking with your staff over the phone and being told that the cost to fix both of our dogs would cost us $1800 and x-rays would be around another $350, we simply told the front desk staff that we couldn't afford it at the moment due to the holidays and requested to come back at another time. I find it insulting and rude that not only didn't you actually pick up the phone and call, but you sent a letter stating false accusations. Not one time did we ever complain to your staff about the cost or services, we simply stated that we couldn't afford the services at that time.With my over 10 years of management and director experience, if It was brought to my attention that one of my clients had an issue with the cost or services, the first thing that I would do would be to pick up the phone and have a conversation with that client to see if we could find a payment solution.But instead you send us a letter stating that you are no longer a good fit to service our pets veterinary needs and therefore you are unable to retain us as a client within your practice. So basically because we couldn't afford $2000 in services DUE TO THE HOLIDAYS, you know longer want our services? This request Im more than happy to apply to and thank you... You just saved me more than $1500 in services due to me taking your advise and calling around and finding a new vet in the area who will do the same service for $500. My advise for anyone looking for a veterinarian, call around because you can find a cheaper place that does the same quality work. My other advice from a business standpoint, next time you hear of a client that can't afford your services at the time it's needed, maybe you should pick up the phone and have a conversation with them. For animal lovers (or rather, if you're like me, the obsessed), knowing that your babies are in good hands can make or break any treatment, check-up, or visit. My big guy just finished a two month stint with the vet due to an aural hematoma, and I could not be happier with our whole experience. The doctors, the nurses, the supervisors and the front desk staff were nothing short of amazing. A dream come true when my dog was going through hell. I have had dogs for 25years and have gone to quite a few Vets, most are okay, one was horrible (new owner of Pinole Pet Hospital), then I found Martinez Animal Hospital.....The Staff is so unbelievably KIND and CARING, they openly show LOVE and CONCERN for my dogs and ME.  If you work, you can leave your dog/cat in the morning and pick up after work.  The doctors give you a personal call right after exams or surgery with a thorough update on how your animal is doing.  The prices are NOT gouging, and I feel comfortable with their charges, in fact they usually overestimate surgery costs and it's nice to have a lower bill upon pickup/payment.  I had to lay my best friend of 12years down with them and the staff loved our Banjo and they all came in to say goodbye, the staff surprised me with a rose, which i left with my beloved Banjo and later surprised me with a casting of my Banjo's footprints which I can't tell you how heart-warming that was!  I have recommended this vet to my son and to a few of my friends and everyone LOVES this vet.  Yes they do have cats in cages for adoption and walking around the office, I'm allergic so beware of this if you are allergic or your dog gets excitable around cats, but frankly having the cats around just shows you the vet/staff's love of animals!  I can always blow my nose when I leave, I'd rather have a vet who cares as much as they do.  I'm not claiming this vet is Perfect and sometimes my requests or phone calls have not been related accurately to doctors or staff, but everybody is human and this is infrequent and normal.  Lastly, they support my holistic choices when I opt out of vaccinating every year, declining 'preventative' antibiotics, and support my healthy organic protein (no carb/grain) diet i feed my dogs, if fact to lower a dogs liver enzymes they recommend Milk Thistle/Sam-e which brought liver enzymes back to normal!!!!!  nor do they push any services on you!  I haven't found a VET better, I'm sure there are ones that are equally as good, but if you're reading my review and are okay with everything I mentioned then you'll feel good about choosing Martinez Animal Hospital as a vet for your pet. After trying a few vets in the area from Concord to Orinda, I settled on this practice after moving to the area in 2014. Dr. Enke is an excellent surgeon, and a knowledgeable and experienced veterinarian. She successfully removed my dog's remaining eye last year, as he had lived with glaucoma in one eye for 6 years and this eye had finally lost all seeing ability. Dr. Enke performed the eye enucleation after thorough bloodwork, and the incision looks even better than the other one.I've had my dog Miles since birth (pregnant rescue of his mom) and am the epitome of a "crazy dog lady". I can be a discerning client who wants to know the minute details of bloodwork and type of anesthesia used, etc. The staff and Dr. Enke are understanding, patient, and explain all services, prices, etc. in detail. After seeing eye and neurological specialists/regular vets from FL to NC to CA (my dog must be a $10k dog by now), and having previously worked at a three-doctor vet clinic, I can honestly say that this hospital provides quality service at very fair prices.The staff has always provided superior customer service and tries very hard to fit you in if possible. At a busy one-doctor practice on some days, it can be impossible to see any client who calls that day for emergencies. It's not fair to their clients with appointments, nor is it fair to give worst rating possible to a quality vet for this reason alone. Today I had an eye emergency with one of my dogs, and though they were booked up and could not fit me in, I understand and will always return here. The other doctor ended up being great after much review of all of my options, and it's always good to have a back-up vet.As for the cats being "unsafe", this hospital rescues cats who would otherwise end up at the shelter and potentially euthanized. They are more than happy to put the office cat away, who gives blood for injured pets if needed, if you ask. I'm allergic to them so cats love me, and I have asked them to move the cat, no problem. Martinez Animal Hospital has fairly good staff but is always booked out a few weeks. I called to get meds for my animals and at first they said they can get me the meds I need and then after a consult with someone in their office, they came back to say I had to bring my animal in for a visit before they would give them medicine. I thought "okay, even though it's more money, I understand they want to see the animal." then they proceed to tell me they cannot get me in for a few weeks. What the heck? I promptly called a different clinic and they were able to get me in asap FOR FREE and get the meds my animals needed same day. I won't be going back to Martinez Animal Hospital because they are "too busy" for my business and did not make the effort to see my animals in a timely manner. My animals deserve better. Read Less

I've been going to the Martinez Animal Hospital for many years and I have yet to have anything but stellar visits, with both the medical and front office staff. My pet has received excellent medical care over the years, and I have been treated with the upmost respect and care as well. I just took my 2 pups to Martinez Animal Hospital to get updated on their vaccines for an upcoming trip and have nothing but wonderful things to say. The prices were reasonable (I called around to several local vets re prices before settling on them).  The staff were incredibly friendly, professional, and welcoming. They make you feel right at home when you're there.  The doctors and nurses were patient and respectful. Our 145 lbs mastiff was very scared and tried to nip at the nurse during her physical exam of him.  She and the doc handled the entire situation wonderfully. They brought out a muzzle, didn't make a big deal out of it, and were gentle yet quick and effective with the vaccines. Finally, the staff were quick to get me all my necessary paperwork and make sure all of our needs were met!I would definitely recommend taking your fur babies here! Read Less

I feel bad for the people that had a one time bad experience , because I've never had any here! I work and live nearby and I like to support a local animal hospital- as it is more convenient, should anything happen to my cats. I only wish they were open on the weekend, something always happens on the weekend! (Emergency wise) It's a small little place, wish it was also a bit bigger. These have nothing to do with lack of stars that's for sure. I take all my million cats here and with each cat there was something unique and they always treat your animal with the same kindness you would show your own pet.. I believe they are reasonable with prices, and do not pressure you to get or do something that is not necessary. They have health and happiness on their mind, not money. Of course it's still expensive it's a vet! When you find a reliable vet that is inexpensive, let me know.  Get care credit. All the employees that I have encountered are awesome and helpful. The most important thing are my animals and the way they treat them, first and foremost.And I love their kitties that walk around like they own the place, sitting on printers and taking a nap next to you as you try to calm down your own pet. Maggie Mae and I were directed to MAH just recently by one of their extremely satisfied customers, and we were instantly convinced that we have no reason to visit another veterinarian... Period! Maggie Mae, by the way, looks like a Yorkshire terrier, but actually is my youngest daughter. At least that's what the two of us like to think. I have been to a few other veterinary offices in the area that never quite felt right. I am happy to call Martinez Animal Hospital my "forever vet". I have rescue dogs that can be a little difficult to manage and one of my girls ended up with a rare autoimmune disease. Dr. Enke recognized her symptoms and started her on a medication regimine that has brought her back to her old self. Dr. Enke and her staff treat my animals with tender loving care. This is sad to post, but what happened to this place? They won't honor their agreement with Contra Costa County to provide the free check up for adopted animals, which basically gets them a new customer? Well they won't get my business, and because they didn't honor the free check up and they were closed for 5 days, now we can't even go to a different vet to get the free check up. Horrible customer service and you want people to trust that you are going to do the best thing for their animals? I certainly hope that someone realizes their error and they do the right thing by their customers, it's a convenient location but with today's experience I will not recommend this place to anyone anymore. Love the people and the care we get.  Maggie, my two year old Pit/Ridgeback mix, is a nervous dog when it comes to people examing her, cutting her nails or checking her teeth.  Our first visit was last week.  Everyone was very patient with her whining in the waiting room.  The visit went well and they welcomed us to come by any time for weight check and treats!  Yesterday I notice a mark on Maggie's neck, my dog is a drama queen, and I couldn't get a good look at it for her wiggling around.  I called and asked if I could bring her by to have the area check as I leave for vacation in 2 days.  They got us in right away and were once again patient with her wiggling and jerking around trying to avoid examination.  As it turned out she did have a wound, not sure how she got it, and they shaved the area, cleaned it and sent us home with an antibiotic ointment.  I love people who are stright forward and don't over react or try to sell me something I don't really need.  Thanks to all the wonderful staff. I use to think this vet was pretty good but have spent about $500.00 this month there and both of my dogs are still sick.  If you voice a concern at the desk DONNA will certainly let you know her feelings. You are not allowed to complain you just have to keep handing your credit card over whether your dog gets better or not.  What a joke!  I am not spending that kind of money in a place and be treated like A DOG.  NO PUN INTENDED. We (kitty River and I) just returned from our first appointment here after finally becoming too fed up with Muir Oaks Veterinary Hospital to take it anymore. This is my first time owning a pet as a grownup and I was wondering if perhaps my standards were just too high or if I was basing them too much on what I expect from people doctors. If my standards are high I can now say that Martinez Animal Hospital meets them all. The place itself is comfortable, very clean but without a scary hospital feel. The staff is all kind and friendly and, although they're busy, never make you feel like they don't have time to answer your questions. The doc shook my hand and asked lots of questions and they had me stay in the room for the exam (stark contrast to Muir Oak). When she found a concerning spot in River's eye she had me come over and look so I knew what she was talking about. The doc herself spent plenty of time with me and answered all my questions, even the really basic ones that any animal owner should probably know already. The prices are cheaper than Muir Oaks and they didn't try to force anything on me, although they did let me know that what I needed was available on their website store for competitive prices. There's a first-time appointment coupon for $10 off an exam fee on their website that you can print and bring with you. I certainly wish I'd switched sooner, they're great to animals and people and, from what I can tell, offer the platinum-standard in customer service. Read Less

The ladies here were very compassionate and considerate when I was looking for a hospital to have my dog cremated. Very good customer service on the phone, as well as in the hospital. The place is clean; no lingering animal smells. It is tucked away in Martinez, off Alhambra Avenue. I received my dog back in a few weeks in a nice cedar wood casing, and was almost exact to the time they had specified it would take. I believe it cost about $200. On top of that, Martinez Animal Hospital made a donation to ARF (a Tony La Russa Charity) on my dog, Charlie's, behalf.  A very nice and respectful way to take care of our loved ones. Read Less

Our pug has had recurring UTIs her entire life. We've been to numerous vets and each one either had us cooking up Bobby Flay style cuisine that we, as her human parents, don't even eat; or, cutting her up without any kind of diagnostic process. That said, we needed to find a vet willing to solve the UTI problem using conservative, common sense methodologies. Luckily, we found that at Martinez Animal Hospital. The staff is awesome and Dr. Butler and Dr. Brown are not only committed to treating real problems; but, thankfully, are also good enough to tell you the difference between a real problem and something that doesn't require expensive treatment. I have been going to Dr. Enke for five plus years now. I love the staff and the doctor. The hospital itself has ample parking and is easy to get to. The grounds around the hospital are darling and peaceful. Always clean and well kept. They listen to you and are helpful and sincerely care about my furry babies. I adopted my kitty girl from them about five years ago. I take my dog there and we have taken our family dog there too. They are caring and warm and genuine people and I believe that the prices are competitive and reasonable. I feel as though when I go in they treat the problem and dont try to sell you what you dont need. I leave this office feeling great and confident that my babies are always in good hands and have had the best care available to them and not feeling overwhelmed or with my wallet hurting. They explain things so you can understand them and I dont feel rushed or like Im taking up their time. It is wonderful. I highly recommend this vet hospital to anyone who wants a loving, caring and compassionate doctor and staff that you feel good going to and quality vet care and reasonable prices for excellent care.
