I honestly do not understand how this man is in business. If you are looking for an opportunistic, reckless vet with a very unwarranted ego, this is your man. The story I am about to share with you, I myself, can hardly even believe.I was out of state. I left my 4 legged kids with my neighbor. There was a very unexpected scuffle between one of mine, and one of hers. They know, and love my Sammy girl who is a gentle giant. There was no blood, but they wanted to make sure she was ok. Though they were in touch with me, they panicked a bit, and took her to their vet instead of mine. I am suddenly told that Sammy is going to be anesthetized, and there were going to be tubes. My neighbor I guess at that point regained her composure enough to ask the doctor if it was okay that Sammy was being anesthetized due to the fact that she is older. He then gave her some song and dance, at which point she became uncomfortable and contacted me about the procedure that he wanted to do. I of course became suspicious because my understanding is that there were only a couple of puncture wounds found. I asked to speak to the doctor, at which point dr. Rodriguez picks up the phone, and almost immediately sounds a bit put out by having to speak with me. He goes on to tell me that there would be an abscess from the puncture wound in 2 to 3 days. He said that they wanted to put her under so she didn't feel the pain of the tubes being put in. I asked him how he could possibly know that those wounds would be abscessed in 2 to 3 days. He was very disturbed by that question, and I could not even tell what he mumbled as a response. I just knew at that point this guy was full of it, because my neighbor had sent pics by now too. I then asked him how much he wanted for this procedure he was trying to make me beleive was life and death. He told me that he had already told my neighbor who had agreed on the price. I said, I don't care, I'm paying this bill, how much do you want for this procedure. He then tells me he wants $900. I immediately told him to hand the phone back to my neighbor. I had been suspicious of their vet for some time, due to the fact that every time she brings her dogs back from her experience with dr. Rodriguez, the bill seems just ridiculous to me. You have to understand I've had animals my entire life. All kinds of animals, which have included all kinds of veterinarians. This guy honestly should be ashamed of his pricing, but even worse, his priority, which I do know now is not your pet.It wasn't long after speaking with him that I realized he was not only being extremely careless with my dogs health, but also taking complete advantage of the situation. Sammy is 13 years old, and although she's in good health my vet would not use anesthesia on her unless it was absolutely a necessity, and she has been treating Sammy for years now. This man had absolutely no history with my dog, nor did he ask any history about my dog to my neighbor who had brought her in for the first time. That is a much more important violation then the financial advantage that he took. But the financial advantage is an abomination as well, beleive me. I asked my neighbor to take Sammy to my vet. I told her I was not at all comfortable with her vet. She let the vet know that we didn't want him to do the procedure, and I'm assuming to punish us he charged her $205. Mind you he did nothing except shave the area. My neighbor stood there the entire time, and they never did any cleaning, or treatment of the two puncture wounds at all, though the bill reads charges for cleaning the wounds. By this time my vet was now closed, but based on the pics I knew it was no emergency, and that likly Sammy did not even need to see a vet at all. But just to be on the safe side, since Dr. Rodriguez had made it sound so horrible, and I was not there, I thought Dr. J should just take a look. Dr. J was of course fantastic. She spent tons of time with my neighbors to help relieve their fear. Showed them how to clean it, and told them just to keep it clean, and she felt Sammy would be fine. She charged them $25 dollars. They were not only stunned at what she charged, but also had never been so well treated, and felt so good following a vet visit.There actually was a very positive ending to this horrible fiasco! My neighbors, who for years have been being ripped off relentlessly, receiving what I now know first hand, was very questionable care by Rodriguez, have a new veterinarian! I'm very happy for them!! :-)Please steer very clear of this guy. It really could be potentially dangerous, but at best, you will be taken advantage of financially. :( Read Less

Dr. Rodriguez is a fabulous veterinarian.  I have been using him for close to 20 years, and 5 dogs.  He has made accurate diagnoses with various ailments and performed excellent surgeries to correct joint issues in the legs of my King Charles Cavalier.  He has a gentle, cordial, and caring demeanor, and takes his time with his patients. If you care for your dog do not take it to this place, I've lost my dog due to their misdiagnosis, the doctor told me the dog has a raspitory issues and it was due to a virus, he gave her antibiotic and when I asked why he said just to make sure it won't turn to phenomena, well that wasn't the case and my dog had Tracheal Collapse and that slowly and painfully killed her, I do remember on her last day I've called the office and the doctor said it's a virus and give her the antibiotic and she will be fine, well that wasn't the case and I still blame myself why I didn't take her to another place for the second opinion. It's been couple of months now since we lost our beloved Machel, I didn't have any plan to post this at the beginning but now I feel obligated, I hope the next person won't go through this. My dog has gone to this vet ever since we got him six years ago. Dr. Rodgriguez and his staff have been great. My dog has had a couple of emergencies through the past few years and he always gets through it and heals up nicely after a visit from the vet. The place is really small inside, but it's a close local place. The staff here are very nice and helpful. My dog may not love it here, but my family and I love this vet. Dr. Rodriguez acts like my cat is the most beautiful and special Siamese he's ever seen. And I'm sure he'll act the exact same way when you bring your Siamese in too. Not really sure about this vet but very pricey to take your dog here for $75 office visit. I'm from Missouri and you only have to pay $40. Anytime you come here WITH an appointment expect to wait 30 min in the room. Took my dog here for an ear infection and the vet gave me drops to put in his ears. Two days later his ears flared up with red blotches. He told me don't blame the medicine I gave you. Obviously the dog was allergic to the medicine because I stopped the medicine and the redness went away. Not going back after this experience. Read Less

I came in her last minute right when they opened this morning because my veterinarian I usually go to wasn't there today and wow could I have not been happier that my old dogs doctor wasn't there because this place was like a fresh of breath air, ( I am terrible with names and I was still half asleep when she told me but I think her name was Danielle) im so sorry if that's wrong but the lady helping us out was so nice and personable that I will tell all my friends of this great place and great people and the doctor was very knowledgable and wasn't all about the money he was there to help animals and help us out! I definitely will be coming back here from now on. My dog had completely broke her back nail deeply and they quickly with no wait took her back right away so she wasn't in anymore pain and gave her a calm shot and fixed her right back up! This vet gave me a great 1st impression.  I recently moved to this area and knew I had to get a vet because my dog has to get a shot every month for a condition she has.  When I got there the office staff was friendly and my dog and I didn't have to wait long for an examination room.  There was quite a long wait once we were in the exam room, but I think that's because the Dr. is the only vet there.  Plus he seems to take a little extra time with the pet parents, which is refreshing to see.  The last vet I had needed a test done for every little thing,  but Dr. Rodriguez trusted that I knew what I was talking about and saw I was a responsible pet parent and renewed my dog's prescription that she needed.  My dog and i go back each month and so far so good, no complaints. Dr. Rodriguez and everyone here are the best!I came here a few days ago with a small emergency. I had found out a night prior that my puppy, Avery, had intestinal worms that needed to be treated as soon as possible, and I was not about to drive all the way back to her original vet in Pasadena to do that. My family friends highly recommended that I come here, so I called them the next morning, and the woman with whom I spoke was extremely friendly and understanding of my situation, and suggested that I come in that morning, so I made an appointment for 11 a.m.Before then, I tried calling Avery's Pasadena vet to get them to send all her information over to Portola, but by the time I arrived for the 11 a.m. appointment, I still hadn't gotten anything. So the woman at the front offered to liaison for me, and immediately called Pasadena to request all the necessary information while I brought Avery into the exam room.Without even a few minutes' wait, Dr. Rodriguez came in and checked out and prescribed the medication to my puppy, and even waived the examination fee! Someone else later came in and administered the first dose and then provided an awesome treat that Avery is now obsessed with.By the time we came out of the exam room, all the paperwork was ready, and I just had to pay for the medicine and sign something, and then we were good to go!From beginning to end, my experience here was just so easy and fantastic. Everybody was welcoming and friendly, and treated my puppy with so much affection and kindness (I guess that's what happens when you go to the vet, really). I really felt that they did all that they could to assist with the situation, and they definitely exceeded any of my expectations. This happened a long time ago but feel I need to leave a review of my experience because I have a friend who also had a bad experience like mine at this facility.  Dr. Rodriguez was only to remove a small growth on his eyelid which was bugging him and Dr. R highly recommended NOT to remove all the non cancerous tumors all over his neck due to his age and to the fact that they were not cancerous.  When I picked my dog up they scooted him out, I was confused because they were to only make him a little sleepy but not all the way under and hours after the surgery my dog couldn't stand or walk on his own? As I lifted him into the car with help, I felt scratches under his neck and was horrified. I went in the office and was told Dr. Rodriguez wasn't available, I left mad, shocked, and just paid the bill so I could just get my dog home. After two hours my dog was still not able to lift his head so I got on the phone with Dr. Kim McGee who is now at Santa Margarita Animal Hospital and she had instructed me to fill a turkey baster with water and shove it down his throat several times to hopefully snap him out of it. My husband came home to me crying and freaking out ..he took care of our dog and told me to go back and get our money back..I demanded my money back and was told sorry that the Dr. was under a lot of stress lately with his wife having a baby and he forgot he wasn't supposed to remove the tumors. I was only given 1/2 of my money back...I was just so upset and wanted to get back to my husband and dog. If you are reading this, please make sure Dr. Rodriguez takes good notes on your pet and before he performs any surgery on your animal make sure you confirm what it is he is doing just prior to it...my dog almost died on us and NEVER...NEVER let them give you your pet back if they cannot walk out of there on their own!!!! Everybody is always nice and it shows that everybody has a passion for what they do there which makes me feel comfortable taking my furry family member here. HAV a 6 yeaqr old dog with lymphomasarcoma . Dr. Rodriquez was excellent in his demeanor and practicality of explain all concerns and helped tremendously to point me in the best direction for attending to my dear companions needs. My dogs condition became too advanced to warrant Doctors treatments but if ever in the future this is one guy working with for sure. I have been taking my cats here for 15 years and highly recommend Dr. Rodriguez. I have 5 cats and every time I bring one in with a problem he knows exactly what's wrong. I have a cat with a heart condition, one with asthma, one with acne too. Weird ailments that I didn't know cats could get but he diagnosed everything promptly and correctly. Last year we had to put one of our older cats to sleep. Dr. Rodriguez and his staff were super understanding. Came in to get my dog vaccinated and a week later she had a golfball sized lump at her injection site due to the vet tech injecting it wrong. Came in for a follow up and the Doctor tried to deny  it was there fault and even tried to bill me for the follow up! (I did get a refund after having a fit with them). Got a second opinion and turns out this lump was from the injection, and after two weeks it's finally starting to go down. Next time I will go somewhere where the techs are trained more and will not hurt my dog! Read Less

Dr. Rodriguez is an amazing, compassionate, and caring vet. The time he has taken with our pets and us in follow up is so much appreciated. We have taken three dogs and four cats to Dr. Rodriguez, and he truly knows each one the moment we arrive. Sadly, we have had two pets put to sleep with the help of Dr. Rodriguez. It was an amazingly peaceful experience and we left knowing we made the right decision to help our pets be out of pain and at rest. I can't say that I have been to many other Vets in my area to compare but I can say that Dr. Rodriguez and staff do a really good job and I believe they provide a very good service. Dr. Rodriguez is a very reasonable doctor and he will give you excellent advice and the proper service that you need. I know he runs an honest business because I came in several times with my 20+ year old cat and he talked me down from doing tests and spending excess money. He is honest and I trust him with my dog as well.One other reviewer mentioned that they felt overcharged and I can understand that. The only criticism that I could possible say about Portola Plaza Vet Hospital is that they don't present you with office visit/procedure costs which can easily result in being surprised of the cost at the end.So my advice to anyone coming here - be sure to ask about the cost of everything before it happens. If you feel that its too much and have the luxury of shopping around than go for it.Beyond that, I highly recommend Portola Plaza Veterinary Hospital Read Less
