Unprofessional, inappropriate, & DANGEROUS veterinary practice!!!
The day after my 9 year old dachshund had surgery to remove her left eye for glaucoma & a TINY (2 mm across, 1 mm deep) mass on her front leg, she chewed the 2 stitches out of her leg. Nothing serious, but I figured better to get it reclosed just in case.
Being Saturday, we went here for the first time. First of all, they left us waiting for 1 1/2 hours when there was only 1 other patient & after I was told it would be "about 5 minutes". But when I went into the hallway to complain, the vet showed up right away.
She asked us for the same information that we had already imparted to the tech AND on the intake form. She then suggested that we test her thyroid because she seemed "a little overweight". I declined. When she finally got around to looking at the wound she informed me that PUTTING IN 2 STITCHES WOULD REQUIRE GENERAL ANESTHESIA. My other option was to leave it open, but that "risked infection & [I] would have to soak it 3 times a day". I said I thought general anesthesia for stitches seemed excessive, so she offered to do it under sedation. "A puff of gas & maybe oxygen you mean?" I asked. "No, IV medications & fluids," she informed me. She also claimed I would still have to leave her for the day. She then left the room to "get me an estimate".
My mother & I couldn't believe what we were hearing! Conscious sedation for STITCHES!
So, I summoned the tech back in to tell her not to bother with the estimate, that we were unimpressed with the vet, & that we were leaving. I asked her why they couldn't just use a LOCAL ANESTHETIC to put the stitches in. She informed me that it WASN'T THEIR POLICY TO PUT STITCHES IN UNSEDATED ANIMALS. I informed her that I had never heard of such irresponsible nonsense. That I was NOT going to put my dog through the RISKS OF ANESTHESIA OR SEDATION 24 hours after she has surgery for 2 measly stitches! I also mentioned I would just take her to Sage in Dublin (my dog's safety is worth the drive).
At that point, the STUDENT vet tech asked me if I wanted her to take my dog in the back, put in a couple of staples, & give her an e-collar. I said "yes, please!"
All that fuss & its the student who makes the suggestion the vet should have from the beginning!
As the student tech brought her back (about 5 minutes later) & was showing me the perfectly stapled wound, the vet reappeared (comically changed into scrubs) & informed me what "they" had done. I ignored her till she left, then thanked the tech.
The only explanation I can think of for the ridiculous behavior of this vet was she was either 1) trying to bill me for the largest amount 2) not confident or competent enough in her skills or 3) both.
At least they had the decency to only charge me for the exam.
