I was referred to Dr. Kahler by a friend and her family who have taken their pets to this veterinarian for decades. The staff is very welcoming, friendly, and very knowledgeable and professional. The office is clean, comfortable and inviting. More importantly, I did not feel rushed, and all of my questions and concerns were addressed. We called and asked if this was an avian certified vet. We needed a bird seen, we were told yes. After 400+ dollars and a vet that really didn't seem to know much about the test results we find out not an avian certified vet. Avians and most exotic need to be seen by a vet with proper schooling not one that is passionate about a specific exotic. I am glad they love and are passionate but this does not replace proper schooling. yes bird is starting to feel better but I am concerned we did not fix the problem only put a band-aide on it as we never found out the actual reason she wasn't well. I brought my cat here because he wasn't acting like himself, it turns out he was in total kidney failure, Dr kahler thought maybe keeping him there for 48 hours, on fluids and stuff would possibly get his kidneys going again, and they could get him to eat. We brought him home on a Thursday, sadly I had to bring him back in on Saturday morning... He was suffering and I had to make the decision to let him go. I had my sweet boy since I was 10 years old, I'm 26 now. Everyone at VMA was caring, towards my sweet Frisky and did their best to try to help and save him. I'm forever thankful for the care they showed not only to him, but to me too. I definitely recommend this place to everyone in search of a great, caring veterinarian(s) for their pet(s). Read Less

I brought my bearded dragon here because she was sick, but instead of helping her they completely worsened her condition.. the "exam" they gave her was the vet pretty much just asking us questions we already knew like about her temps, lights, habitat, food intake etc... the vet injected her with antibiotics without giving us other options and she was overly fed. Later that night we took our beardie home, and she couldn't even hold herself up. We then realized the inside of her mouth was full of throw up, but was too weak to throw it up herself so we had to open her mouth and clean it ourselves. A little after, she passed away, either from choking on more of her throw up or from the the medicine intake.  We went back the next day and didn't get any closure. I think it was wrong of them for not letting us know about any other options or even saying there could be complications. I would not recommend this place to anyone. When taking your pet to a vet I expect the best care. We pretty much just payed them for our bearded dragon to have a slow and painful death. Read Less

Fuu made it to almost 3 before he was neutered. He didn't have a meow and I just think he's different. He had recently found his meow to ask for whipped cream. Dr. Kahler and his entire team at Veterinary Medical Associates are very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. He explained the options we had for Sugar, our Syrian hamster, in a way that was easy to understand when we brought her in for respiratory problems. Sugar was part of our family so understanding what was best for her was important.I called several vets in the area, but they didn't take care of small animals like Sugar. I called another facility, but had to wait 5 days to get an appointment! She needed care now and 5 days was too long to wait. Finally, I called PetSmart and asked for a recommendation and the gal I spoke with suggested VMA since they took their hamsters there when they're sick.A few days after my visit, we received a hand written letter in the mail signed by the entire staff welcoming us. This is so rare for a business to do, but it made us feel so welcomed and as a result will be taking all our animals to VMA in the future. Read Less

I love VMA!! They are ALL of my animal's vets. Found them while looking for a vet that could help my tortoise, Thor years ago. They were the only vet I could find. I liked them so much for their genuine care for my poor sick guy, that I changed the rest of my brood to VMA. 5 dogs, 2 cats, 1 bird, 1 tortoise, 1 bearded dragon and 3 fish. First of all, they are the only exotic vets in town. Thank God Dr. Kahler & Dr. Wort are 2 of the finest vets I have ever encountered. I have multiple elderly pets of various species (dogs, cats, rats) with complicated health issues as well as a new puppy. The practice offers a fabulous puppy package ($400-$440, all-inclusive). And Dr. Kahler has seen my beloved 9 year old Dachshund, Emilee safely through several big health scares. Dr. Kahler also does a fabulous job treating my rats (which I have found is rare) & gives the same respect to the exotic babies that he does to dogs & cats. The vets & the staff are some of the most loving & compassionate people. I have a background in both human medicine (RN) & animal rescue (9 years), so I am not easy to please. I have walked out of many vets in my time. But I can wholeheartedly reccommend this practice. In fact, I have only ever found 1 other vet in my life I could reccommend as highly (and he retired). I drive an hour and a half just to come here with my birds. Every place I've gone to there's usually only one person on the staff that actually knows about birds. So I was surprised to learn how much most of the staff here actually knows about birds/exotic pets. They have a very knowledgeable staff and they are so great with my birds and providing top service to not only my birds but to me as well. Always a great experience! I definitely recommend this vet. I have two Amazon Parrots. Both are Rescues. One had some serious medical Issues. I am not a fan of going to vets that do not specialize in Parrots or exotic birds. Parrots can be tricky. It can take a specialist to help a parrot. I have found the staff and Dr. Kahler to be absolutely FANTASTIC. More than that, my birds know people immediately. They are sensitive to people who don't appreciate parrots. My birds have attacked people they don't like. They are very aggressive towards my sister. However, my birds are calm around VMA staff. This tells me much. Not only is the staff very competent, but, they like animals and my birds know it. My bird is recovering. My bird is a difficult situation since she came out of a very bad environment that fed her candy, chain smoked, and hand raised her improperly and she has stunted growth. Thank you Dr. Kahler and VMA associats. We have a long way to go. but, VMA KNOWS THEIR STUFF. I would give them 10 stars if I could. I also read the review by the person who took their dog to the vet. I will defend Dr. Kahler. INFORMATION is everything. Information wins wars and medical battles. I don't have allot of money. I talked with the staff and we worked at trying to resolve the problem within a reasonable budget. But without tests, the doctor doesn't have much to work with. We did an Xray and started from there. Bills have added up. But no unnecessary tests have been performed. Tests that were asked for upon my first visit, eventually were done. And, wallah, issues were found and treated. Just because the Dr. Wanted to do surgery, doesn't make him a fraud. Fraud is a form of Malice with intent to do harm. It is the responsibility of the pet owner to decide if they are going to throw bottomless pits full of money at the problem or to see what can be done within a budget the owner is willing to live with. I don't know why Dr. Kahler diagnosed the dog with an abscess. The dog owner didn't state why. Were there Xrays? Did the infection appear to be life threatening? I have severe sinus problems, Deviated septum. I know how life threatening infections in the eye and sinus area can be. There is too much information missing from the dog owner's story to take it as credible. My bird, Louie, is a long way from being perfectly healthy. I will followup with this as things progress. Though the expenses have been more than would have liked to spend, Tests that were requested up front were done a month later and were indeed necessary. Pets are like humans. Want to gamble, don't do tests and let nature take its course. Do tests. Some will be positive, some negative. But, the tests help to find the problems. Until Star Trek Medical scanners are invented, this is how things are done. Read Less

We went to Veterinary Medical Associates and seen Dr. Kahler after our female dog became infected with a bacteria in her eye after being spayed. Upon examining her eye his diagnoses was she needed surgery because there was an abscess behind the eye that was transmitted from her surgery. He wanted us to leave her there for an operation that would cost $1600. She also had difficulty opening her mouth and he claimed that her it was due to the abscess and when she opened her mouth it therefore put pressure on the infection. He gave her an antibiotic injection to prepare her for surgery but we opted not to leave her there overnight. Upon arriving home we noticed that her eye was almost completely and her mouth appeared to be recovering as well. I called to cancel the surgery and asked if we can continue the treatment with antibiotics. He reluctantly agreed as he said that the abscess behind the eye could not reached with medication and he still wanted to operate. The antibiotics worked perfectly. When we returned her for a checkup Dr. Kahler admitted that his diagnoses was wrong since the alleged abscess was indeed neutralized without surgery. Along with our female we brought our male dog who had no major issues except for a minor ear infection as well as a small amount of pus around his eyes. For him we merely wanted to continue the eye drops we had been giving him when we were clients of our previous veterinarian. Without explaining why he did numerous tests on our male dog disregarding our authorization and not explaining the fees. He then charged us $704 and, of course, our dog had no health issues as we already had learned from our previous vet. As far as Dr. Kahler is concerned, I find it deplorable that a doctor would suggest surgery on a dog who had a minor problem. Her condition was obliviously treatable with medication. Wanting to rush into something as delicate and costly as surgery is quite disingenuous and, subsequently, charging us for multiple unnecessary tests without informing us as to their costs reaffirms our suspicions of fraudulent activity on Dr. Kahler's part. I brought my rat, Lilo, to be checked out because she had a growth under her front arm. The staff was so sweet and made me feel comfortable leaving Lilo in their hands. Lilo has had surgery to have the growth removed and she is just as lively as ever! We love the staff at VMA and they have treated both of our guinea pigs and our cats. We've been to other vets and our cats especially have been very skittish of them, but here they warm up to the staff quickly and always seem far less stressed than the other vets they've been to. After one of our cats came home from surgery I kept finding question after question and no matter how many times I called, they were always welcomed the questions and were helpful. Read Less

This is the best place to bring your pet. I LOVE Dr. Kahler! He is the best! He has the best bedside manor I have ever seen in even an MD! And that's saying a lot! My cat went in there because he was sneezing after he had a foxtail in the eye and had some kind of upper respiratory infection because of it. He called me back in a few days to find out how Rocky was doing, and was truely concerned! I can't say enough about him. I wish he was MY doctor! The staff there is also great, they're really nice.
