Very friendly staff who takes the time to get to know your animal. I've never had to wait for more than a few minutes and have brought both my dogs here for years. We take all our dogs and cats here.  They're a very good clinic.  There are several vets on staff, and we have our favorites of course, but all are good and competent.They're busy, so it sometimes takes longer than I'd like to get an appointment.  But if it's something critical, then they're always good about working us in.My impression is that they're a bit more expensive than some, but they do not seem to up-sell the way some vets do.  Overall, it's worth it for the good service and peace of mind. After moving to Morgan Hill, I was trying to determine if I wanted to bring my pets to Live Oak or South County.  After visiting both places, I made up my mind- LIVE OAK.  The desk person at south county looks like she is smiling at you while throwing daggers...NOT the attitude I want to deal with.  LIVE OAK was friendly and warm when I arrived and even though Dr. McKenzie was recommend........my pets are going to LIVE OAK! Charged $350 for a Vet check and blood test which they subsequently 'miss handled'. Dr. Maryssa offered to rerun the blood test for a nominal fee but never offered to refund the cost to seek another more professional veterinarian clinic. Therefore, my dog will need another stressful blood draw, not to mention the office waited 2 weeks to notify us of the errors. Overpriced and Under delivered.... Not a good first impression. I love Dr. Michelle and Dr. Rick. I have had pets all my life and I try to take very good care of them. Many Vets charge a lot and with minimal care. I understand its there business and industry. However, since moving to Gilroy a little over 8 years ago and trying to establish my new life. I visited a few vet offices. They were not bad but not great and spent $$$. I was referred to South County Animal Hospital. I was thrilled the minute I walked into the door. The level of Customer Service and communication was key. It was genuine. Which is key in any business. Unfortunately, most businesses forget this step!. It was a very warm and friendly office and clearly they loved there jobs and enjoyed being at work. They Doctors always get on the floor and love on your pets and really get to know them. I was not over charged and they have been very honest with me, even if the news was hard to hear.  They never sold me anything or had me spend money when the odds were not good or on unnecessary items. Actually they gave be many great cost savings suggestions and options. Pet owners know there is an expense with pets and quality care. Realistically its there business and how they pay there bills and take care of there families, like we all do! With that said, they clearly like there jobs and enjoy doing what they love. Dr. Rick is our go to Vet. Dr. Although we have used other Vet Dr's. at the same place, we have been seeing Dr.Rick for 17 years. He is very caring, with both our dog and us! We have had to put down a couple of our dogs due to age and breast cancer. He is just so excellent and compassionate, he helped by making all of us feel the best we could! Yesterday, I brought my 12 year old dog Chile to South County Animal Hospital, for the first time. I called and told the assistant Chile's conditon and I was told the veterinarian would fit Chile in. I called about 8:10, by 8:40 Chile was in an examination room. The veterinarian, walked into the room and put out his hand and introduced himself as Rick, while he examined Chile, he asked me a series of questions. Dr. Rick was very forthright, yet compassionate regarding Chile's conditon. Not only was he very honest about Chile's medical condition, he was up front about how much I could potentially be looking at financially, after a complete examination and xrays. I anxiously waited, after a couple of hours, I was called back. Dr. Rick, updated me on Chile's conditon and told me Chile was resting comfortably. Chile was very old and he had exceed his life span. Dr. Rick patiently and kindly guided me through the process of making, (every pet owners nightmare), the decision to put Chile to sleep. I loved my dog very much, a part of me died yesterday. Chile was 4 weeks old when I got him. At this point, I would like to add I could not have gotten through yesterday without the expertise and support I received from every staff member at South County Animal Hospital. The staff was very kind, efficient, and the examination room was spotless. Dr. Rick was awesome. More than anything, Chile was happy, he was not agitated or aggressive, he was very calm. Chile was put to sleep yesterday,. Someone, went and got Chile and there was a green towel on the floor, Dr. Rick invited me to sit on the floor with him so I did. Chile walked over and put his head on my lap, and Dr.Rick kindly explaind the process to me. We sat and talked about Chile, then, Dr. Rick told me Chile's heart had stopped. I thought it was over however, Dr. Rick continued to talk, he sat with Chile and me for another 15 minutes chatting about Chile's life. Thank you South County Animal Hospital for helping Chile, thank you so much for helping me. Thank-you for allowing my Chile to end his life with such dignity. EVERYONE, was just wonderful and I apologize for calling you fifty times yesterday. Iam 59 years old, and yesterday was one of the most challenging and difficult days of my life. Let me start off by saying that their regular visits are $55. It's  $80 if they "fit you in" but they won't tell you this. They will just charge you. Normally a good experience, but don't make an appointment past 3pm on a friday. The techs want to get out of there and anything urgent you will get serious attitude. I.e. eyerolls. Had me practically in tears with how blatantly rude it was that I was holding them up even with a scheduled appointment because they were running late (made 5 days earlier). 5 star for the doctors. Zero for the techs. Not the first time or second or third asking myself what was so wrong that they were so nasty. The staff also tried to cancel appointent when they were overbooked claiming the appointment may not be necessary. After having appointed meeting with dr. It absolutely was good we went in. My family, with many animals, have been clients of SCAH for more than 15 years.  When we first began seeing Rick, he was just a small-town, animal-loving guy, whose true priority was caring for our cats and dogs.  He was well-loved by all as a talented, caring pro.  The staff was small, everyone knew your name;  it was what you'd expect from a semi-rural vet practice.Now there are three vets.  Rick is rarely seen, having fully insulated himself from both client and client's owners by the other vets and a seemingly endless staff of nameless faces.  Michelle is kind, but often clueless, and makes regular, major mistakes in judgment and professional care, for which no one is accountable.  We had a purebred dog who was susceptible to a particular chronic condition, which, left untreated, would kill him.  I brought him in to her in full-blown crisis.  The symptoms were awful, but immediately recognizable for this disease by anyone familiar with the breed's vulnerabilities (which I then was not).  She sent us home after performing 800.00 worth of useless tests, and told us he'd be fine.  He was not.  As the condition progressed, I immersed myself in the research and diagnosed my dog myself in desperation.  When I brought him back the following day, he was nearly dead.  My diagnosis was confirmed by another series of expensive tests for which I was charged, along with yet another visit fee.  The correct meds were given, and my dog survived nearly two grand later.  No offer to compensate us for the needless first visit and tests.Marisa is an amazing vet. We adore her.  Smart, compassionate, at the top of her field.  When we recently had to put that same dog down after four years of living with his disease, we were charged more than 1500.00 over the course of a week, only to be left with no choice but to put him down.  The last day of his life, we were charged 300.00 for a visit and blood test, in addition to 300.00 to end his life and have him cremated.  While Marisa was great, the fees charged were outrageous and unkind.  I'm all for a business succeeding, but at a certain point, it just becomes exploitative.Other vets in the area simply don't do this.  One of my dogs suffered a rattlesnake bite yesterday, and I took her to a vet who came highly recommended in Gilroy.  He charged me cost for the meds.  I want to go somewhere where my business and heart are valued.  I know no one will care at SCAH that we've left after 15 years.  There's always someone else to keep up their bottom line. I have been taking my animals here for years, and they have handled two of them being put to sleep with grace and compassion. They do work with you on cost, and explain all tests and why they feel you need them before they are done. Dr. Michelle and Dr Rick both are great, they will bring in another vet if they feel they need another opinion. I was recommended here a few years back and glad I was. We were going to Gilroy Vet, all they care about is money, not the customer or the animal. Had brought my dog many time there ans they said nothing was wrong with her. But when I brought my dog here...... They did a blood test, turned out she has a autoimmune disorder along with another issue why she gets sores and thinned skin and issues with her butt. They explained to me exactly what it is and told me different things that can be done.The people who work here are always friendly and you can tell they love their job. I bring both of my dogs here. If something needs to be done they give you a quote and if you get it done within a certain amount of time you get a discount. I had a couple bad teeth pulled and they kept me updated along the way. If you have problems paying you can use Carecrediy which you pay over a certain amount of time. I have used it numerous times for my own dental.Overall, this is a awesome place to go and I would definately recommend it. Read Less

I love coming here, I feel taken care of and they usually find a way to squeeze us in! I have been a customer for the past six years. They are fair in their pricing and knowledgeable - they are honest about prognoses and they provide multiple routes and options for treatment.I do wish they had more updated tech (an ultrasound machine, for example), but super for your every day pet needs. They are not shy about referring you if your pet needs more specialized care, which I also appreciate. These 5 stars-- wish I could give 5 more-- are for Dr. Rick. I have been to many vets during the life of my 16 year old dog, and none have displayed the level of professionalism and honesty as Dr. Rick has shown us. No other vet offices have allowed me to be present when blood tests or shots are administered, and I appreciate him for allowing me to calm my pet during the procedures. When my elderly pet's time to go was upon us, I put my dog in this vet's hands to help us let her go in peace. Now that I have a new puppy, we are going back! Dr. Rick and the help of the wonderful tech gave my dog 4 shots and he didn't even realize it was happening! The last place we went to in Evergreen had my dog screaming in horror in a back room. When I moved from Fort Lauderdale to San Jose, I received a recommendation from my vet for one of her college mates. Although we usually see Dr. Michelle, I have to say that I am very impressed with all the vets that we have seen. They do not make you run unnecessary tests and will tell you straight out what the cost for items will be. All of my babies are healthy and happy because of the great service and dedicated team. We have cats and dogs that have been seen at this place for a few years. During that time we have never seen the same veterinarian twice. That in itself should have been a red flag I suppose. Vets apparently come and go. Each vet seems not to have read our animal's medical record. We are always asked the same questions about medication that should be in the record. Each vet has yet another opinion about the diagnosis and treatment of the animals as though the last vet we saw there had no idea what they were talking about. Either none of the vets are very good or don't keep records.On top of that bewildering state of affairs, the person at the reception desk is abrupt at best, but usually rude. What little faith this place may engender with the revolving door vets is not exactly enhanced by the rudeness of The Queen of Hearts either ignoring you or snarling at you. She clearly hates the vets almost as much as the clients. I am done with this horrible place. Find another, friendly place with less turnover. These people do not deserve your support. Read Less

Dr's Rick, Michelle & Maryssa are THE BEST and there's no other place I will take my boys for vet care. Mr.Chompers and Clyde love the staff and doctors they are all skilled, knowledgeable and caring. My boy, Chomp is a rescue I found when I lived in Mississippi and he has multiple problems from a gunshot wound he received before he came to our family. So he is a regular there at South County Animal Hospital and they have helped Chompers to have a happy healthy life with less pain and better quality. They give the best quality care and don't clean out your bank account. Chompers has had a few surgeries there both scheduled and emergent and he was helped immensely by the veterinarians and staff down there and their fees are more than reasonable. These people are really nice and take good care of your fur-babies. Our pup is a rescue and was actually really sick when we got her, they fixed her right up and gave really good advice for how to care for her during the healing process. Also, they're not just out to get your money, our dog caught a wild field mouse or a vole or something and tried to eat it and when I called them, south county animal hospital didn't try to get me to come in, they just told me unless she had been bitten she should be fine. Most places will make you come in every chance they get to take more of your money. Not these guys. Read Less

I have been taking my dog to Dr. Rick for the past 4.5 years. My dog has had his share of issues - from severe allergies, ear infections, etc. He has also had his teeth cleaned and been neutered here. Every experience at this animal hospital has been nothing short of amazing. Dr. Rick is truly amazing with animals and is great with clientele - all of his staff is. I have found all the staff to be very friendly and helpful, and based upon all my experiences I will not go anywhere else! I love South County Animal Hospital, but more importantly I think my dogs love it, too! I've been bringing my pets here for over 15 years. The Doctors and staff are amazing and always make me feel like my pet is a number one priority. I have always found them accommodating and understanding when I need help, and they always validate my concerns and treat me with respect. Very nice and helpful. Called last min to get my sick puppy seen and they were able to squeeze him in along w being very accommodating they give you an estimate on the phone with out asking. Which is very very good and no other vet hospitals do that unless you ask and give you attitude. We walked in and was directly put into a room and seen with in mins. Didn't wait at all. The vet doc was very nice and direct which helped a lot was he gave me options I didn't have to ask for that either nor did anyone push any meds or extra this or that in my face. It was the MOST pleasant vet visit I have been to and I've had my fair share. They are also reasonably priced with no surprises or extras. I highly recommend!! Great experience Read Less

The best Animal Hospital in South County. Dr. Leininger spends as much time as needed with my animals. He always explains all aspects of the services he is recommending. He is very well informed and up to date on all areas of veterinary medicine. I really like how he gets down on the floor to make my animals very comfortable - they actually like going to the vet - that has never happened before in all the years I have been going to veterinarians. Dr. RIck is fantastic with dogs. I have a Chihuahua mix rescue dog who is highly reactive to me - she has been abused. It took Dr. Rick less than 5 minutes to have her climbing in his lap. I've taken my dogs and cat to South County Animal Hospital for years. I highly recommend them. Read Less
