The Newport Beach Veterinary Hospital

Newport Beach, California
General Info
The Newport Beach Veterinary Hospital provides complete General Veterinary care to Newport Beach and the surrounding communities, as well as Referral and Second Opinion Evaluations of difficult and complex pet illnesses, for Dogs and Cats throughout the Southern California area. Dr. Cohen, an Internal Medicine Specialist for pets, was the very first with his credentials here in Orange County, California. Now, with over 30 years of experience, he remains on the progressive "cutting edge" of the veterinary profession while remaining constant in the hearts of those who entrust their pets to his expertise and comprehensive care. Dr. Cohen approaches evaluation of each pet, from that healthy puppy exam to an ear infection to heart disease or cancer, with an eye on the details. Most notably, our clients comment on Dr. Cohen's intellect, thoroughness, compassion, and sense of humor. The Newport Beach Veterinary Hospital facility was designed as a personalized veterinary practice with advanced expertise, and cutting edge technology. This veterinary hospital is completely contained with it's own radiology, anesthesiology, surgery, cardiology, ultrasound, endoscopy, laparoscopy, and diagnostic laboratory abilities. We also provide urgent care for the surrounding community and exclusive residential boarding and bathing for our established clientele. As a Specialty Veterinary Practice, it is our responsibility to our community, our patients, and our profession to maintain the highest of professional standards.

I am sure the DR here is great, but I never had the chance to find out. As with other postings the front office staff needs a lot of work here. Keeping it short. Called early in the week, hung up on twice after being on hold for ten minutes each time. Third times a charm I was offered an appointment. Time presented was mid-day, with traffic probably a 2  1/2 - 3 hour drive. Day before scheduled appointment receive a call to be there thirty minutes earlier. OK, not a problem. Day of, one hour into my drive and dead stop on the 405 and still on time, "We need you to come in an hour after the newly scheduled appointment and cannot guarantee that spot due to some unforeseen emergency". Not one apology, not one mention of another DR in the area they might recommend. Literally, you are not a priority. We don't care if you made an appointment nor do we care that you're driving in traffic for three hours to get your animal care. Now I understand what an emergency is. What I don't understand is a weak front office with no empathy. My dog was in pain. I am willing to spend real money, people this isn't cheap, and see a professional because I care about my animals immensely. And when it came time to help my animal out, nothing. After hearing in the individual's voice that she in no way cared about the situation I asked for the appointment to be canceled. Got off at the next exit and went home. Again, the DR here was referred to me by individuals I highly respect. I cannot in good conscience recommend the same. Read Less

I wanted to have my very healthy 8 year old yorkie-poo's teeth cleaned withNon-Anesthesia. Heard about Jason Carr, who works out of Newport Beach Veterinary Hospital. NB vet told me I would need to have my dog examined by Dr. Cohen before her teeth cleaning appointment it would be a $65.00 office examine visit. NB Vet would not take her records from the vet I have taken her to the past 8 years. I took Ella into NB Vet 5 days prior to the teeth cleaning. Dr. Cohen was very nice and spent a lot of time with us. Took a Video Otoscopy of her ears, she had a "very slight" ear problem which could turn into an ear infection. Dr Cohen recommend ear drops. At the end of the office visit the total was $160.00.$65.00 Office Visit$28.00. Video Otoscopy of ears$28.00   Ear Drop Prescription$39.50.  Bordetella Vaccination-Ella needed thisThe total should have been about $120.00Day of teeth cleaning I was told they needed to give her a DHHP-C vaccination The paperwork from Ella's vet showed this vaccination is not due until 2/2018.Front office told me they give this shot every year, she would have to get this if I wanted her teeth cleaned. $40.00 DHPP-C Vaccination $47.00. Fecal Exams??? I was never told about this $180.00 Teeth Cleaning Basically the $180.00 teeth cleaning turned into almost $400.00 Due to all the up-charges.****BUT WAIT THAT'S NOT ALL****Ella became very sick not drinking water or eating, vomiting, bad diarrheaand became very lethargic. After 2 days of this I had to take her to So Cal Veterinary Emergency Hospital in Irvine. Which took Ella immediate to examine her. After eliminating any other changes in Ella's environment prior to the dental appointment, they diagnosed her with Un-necessary Stress So Cal Vet administered Fluids, antibiotic shots, plus a shot to immediately help stop the diarrhea. We left with 3 prescriptions and a $200.00 bill.Ella has recovered however, this was a horrible Experience and a Very Expensive Dental Cleaning!I would NOT recommend going to NB Vet Hospital with all the Up-Charges plus a Very Rude front office staff. I decided to try Newport Beach Veterinary Hospital for OFA X-rays - as referred to me by a friend. Quality and correct positioning of these are critical to make the picture as accurate to what the dog has to for rating as possible. It is very important for my breed and the sport I do with my dogs. You cannot make bad hips look good, but you CAN make good hips look bad with poor X-rays...and you would be surprised at how few vets can do them right. Mrs. Cohen's X-rays were the highest quality and best positioning I've ever seen and I have tried many vets and looked at many X-rays from peer's vets. Despite running behind there was no feeling of being rushed or of being an annoyance to her and she was more than happy to take the time to thoroughly explain the anatomy, what you look for to evaluate the dog's hips and elbows and how my dog's hips would most likely be rated. To top this off, the staff was friendly and accommodating - offering us drinks and candy while we waited; the exam rooms and lobby had obviously up-to-date equipment and were beautiful, well-kept, clean, smelled nice and had comfortable seating. I totally understand how a medical facility can get behind and these made the wait time bearable. Thank you, I will 100% be returning!Read Less

Was inspired by a neighbor referral to see Dr. Cohen but encountered an extremely unprofessional front desk attendant who poorly represents Dr. Cohen and the wonderful referral I had received. Was informed their "3" hour a day schedule sufficed for most and if I couldnt make an appointment I had scheduled in the AM, I should follow suit of many of their clients and hire an assistant to bring my dog in! Was also told appointment changes are not accepted under any conditions and that they operate under a "one strike, your out" philosophy!  Although I was enthusiastic to meet Dr. Cohen, under no circumstances would I put my dogs into the hands of a business that is as pretentious, cold and impolite as the women answering phones!  First impressions can make or break a business and unfortunately, this golden rule of thumb applied today.  (For the record, this is my first Yelp review!). My review is based on two months of treatment  with constant visits to this facility; therefore, I am not basing this review on a sole incident but on a series of them. This place is absolutely amazing and here is why:  My Mia (English Bulldog on my default picture), was saved by doctors and staff at Newport Beach after a horrific accident with a truck during Thanksgiving.  After the tragedy, we took Mia to a hospital in St. Monica where she had her first surgery to repair her left femur that was broken into numerous pieces.  Mia's injuries were so severe that we took her to Newport Beach Vet in order to treat her for the rest of her injuries and subsequent surgeries; that was the best thing we could have ever done. Treatment:-Dr. Cohen is one of the best veterinarians the world has ever seen, not only does he give your pet the best care but he explains the process to great detail that you feel you were present when the care was given.  Also, feel free to ask any questions as he answers all of them.  You don't feel rushed when you are talking to him and he is far from being the "cold doctor" you encounter in the medical field, he is very personable and you know he loves what he does.   Mia got a really bad infection after the first surgery at the other hospital because the place failed to sterilize appropriately, and Dr. Cohen treated Mia for the infection and other issues that resulted from the accident.  There is a possibility that Mia would have lost her leg if the infection was not treated :(-Dr. Fitch is one of the country's top orthopedic surgeons, it is also, thanks to his magical hands that Mia is walking again.  He, like doctor Cohen, knows what he is doing and performed two surgeries for Mia.  He aligned her pelvis and fixed the femur that was incorrectly treated at the first hospital.  After every surgery he called and told us all about them :) Nothing better than a follow up call to ease your mind and heart.-Debra Cohen, well to sum it up, she is an angel.  Her healing hands helped with the physical therapy, the road rash, the exams, etc.  She is such a loving person that I felt so comfortable leaving Mia with her from the moment I saw her.  There is nothing better than knowing that our little family members get love at the "hospital"  (it's more like a five star hotel for pets).  Mia loves her so much that she goes crazy when she sees her.  Debra would send us updates on Mia via text and seeing her messages always lit up our days.Staff:You are welcomed with water, wine or other beverage.  The girls at the front desk called us on a weekly basis to tell us how Mia was doing and since we live in Woodland Hills they would accommodate our visiting hours every time.  There were instances were we would over welcome our stay and they were closed, but the girls never rushed us even though they needed to go home.  Like the rest of the family at Newport Vet, the girls at the front love Mia and gave her lots of affection. The girls in the back, are also very loving and Maria was so nice to my Mia that I will be eternally grateful. Facility:The place is very clean and they have a beautiful salt water fish tank that compliments the black and white tile.  Parking has never been an issue even on their busy Saturdays.  You can park in the back or there is plenty of space outside on PCH. Now, over two months later, my Mia is back home and happier than ever, but I must say Newport is her second home and we will be eternally grateful. Read Less

This is pretty much my pets second home. I seriously do not have the words to describe the care you get from everyone here. This is a pet owners/lovers place and you will know from the moment you walk in the door. I have been a client here for over a year now and will never go anywhere else. I live over 25 miles from here but can tell you that it is worth it. Found them on the Internet if you can believe that then 2 other people I met randomly recommended Dr. Cohen so it was fate. My boys and even one I had to put to rest all love it there. Everyone there is awesome and super friendly and for sure will never steer you in the wrong direction. Dr. Cohen is really a genius. Seriously, folks, he has that kind of IQ but the nicest guy you'll ever want to meet. When I see him when I come in with my crazy dogs, he always has a joke or a way about him that makes you feel you are safe and in the best hands. He is a multi-pet owner himself and knows the many breeds in and out. He also is certified as a specialist and one of the best vets to ever come out of the veterinary school at UCDavis, plus he rides motorcycles so you know he must be very cool. Dr. Cohen even tweets so check him out @NewportVet. This place is seriously awesome and I honestly can say I love coming there. It really is as good as it gets. Read Less

I tell everyone I know who has a diabetic cat to take their cat to Dr. Jeffrey Cohen at Newport Beach Veterinary Hospital. We rescued Oscar, who is half Ocicat and half Manx at 4 months old. Of course we brought him to Dr. Jeffrey Cohen. In 1999, we moved to Oregon for 18 months on business. While there, we took Oscar to a local vet to have his annual shots and annual teeth cleaning. I was horrified to get a call from the vet, advising me that they had removed one of Oscar's front saber teeth and wanted permission to remove others. I told them 'No'. I was alarmed that they would remove a tooth and I questioned the necessity since Oscar was only a few years old. When I returned home and took Oscar to see Dr Jeffrey Cohen he told me that Oscar's teeth looked fine. Oscar is now almost 14 years old and hasn't lost a tooth under Dr. Cohen's care. Here's a perfect example of Dr. Jeffrey Cohen being on the cutting edge of what is going on in veterinarian medicine: In June of 2009, Oscar became diabetic and was taking insulin shots twice a day. Dr. Cohen suggested that we try a new diabetic reversal diet. Oscar went on the diet and later Deborah Cohen was elated to inform us that Oscar's diabetes was officially reversed! That's right! Officially reversed! Oscar is totally off insulin and runs around the house like a kitten! It is such a tremendous joy not to have to give my cat insulin shots twice a day! I don't know who is more appreciative, me or Oscar! Read Less

Dr. Jeffrey Cohen has the competency to diagnose what is wrong with your pet, administer the correct treatment and save your pets life. I met Dr. Cohen after I had taken my two 7 year old Blue Point Siamese brothers to have their annual shots and teeth cleaned at a local vet. I had taken them to the same vet since they were kittens. But I moved, so I had all of their medical records and vaccination information faxed to a local vet. My previous vet always pointed out that one of them, Booski, when given his shots had a tendency to have psychotic episodes and always advised me to keep him separate from his brother in a dark room for awhile after I brought him home. I was trying to do just that when I noticed that Booski was clearly not feeling well. I took Booski back to the local vet, who told me that she didnt know what was wrong with him and that there was nothing that she could do. I rushed Booski to another vet, who very kindly told me that my cat was dying. He told me that my cat was having a bad reaction to something that was given to him, but without knowing what, could not help him and was afraid to administer anything that could possibly cause more harm. He told me there was nothing he could do to help other than to continue to inject him with fluids, which hopefully would keep him alive long enough for me to get him in to see a specialist, a Dr. Jeffrey Cohen in Newport Beach. I took Booski to Dr. Jeffrey Cohen and he saved our Booskis life. I cannot tell you how grateful we were to receive that late night call from Dr. Cohen to give us the status on Booskis condition. Not only had Dr. Cohen figured out what the problem was, but Booski was treated, doing well and expected to return home soon. The nightmare was over. Suffice it to say that words can not express the magnitude of our gratitude. Booski lived to be 18 years old, which I understand is rather unusual for a pure-bred Siamese cat. Boy missed his brother Booski and would continue to look for him around the house. When Boy became ill, I thought it best to let Boy go. That was over a year after Booski passed. So, I believe Boy lived to be 20 years old. I attribute both of my cats longevity to the expert and excellent care of Dr. Jeffrey Cohen. For the very best care for your beloved animal, go see Dr. Jeffrey Cohen at The Newport Beach Veterinary Hospital. J. Madison Read Less

I have sent folks to Dr Cohen exclusively for several years because he is incredibly smart, willing to work with people, and a great (famous) vet. Several friends and co-workers have come to me with dilemmas that they could not afford a certain surgery on their cat/dog and were looking at putting the animal down. Everyone has always called me back advising how wonderful Dr. Cohen & staff were, working with them even on the most complex and expensive surgeries and cancer treatments. More importantly everyone is thrilled he was just really a nice guy who loved animals. One friend could not believe his dog liked him as he has bitten his last 2 vets! In this world of large vet clinics with a dozen or more vets on staff who appear to be impersonal and basically just a business - it is refreshing to find this small practice who treat you and your pet as though they matter and truly seem to care about the clients and animals. I will always be taking my dogs and cats to Dr Cohen and have found him very knowledgeable and experienced and wonderfully human. And I realize I am probably the client from hell sometimes when I'm upset about a sick pet and he was still nice and his staff always make me calm! You''l be safe with these people. Read Less

Read Less
