Great pet care. When my dog sprained her leg jumping the fence at the dog park, Claremont Vet Hospital saw me right away, squeezing me in between scheduled appointments. Like most vets, you do have to take your pet to an emergency service if it is after work hours, and you cannot wait. Claremont vets is open Saturdays. You can also board your pet at a reasonable price. Read Less

Love this vet place. There are certainly some characters at the Claremont Vet - when I bring in my dog the whole staff comes running with treats, cuddles, lots of love. My dog hates to ride in the car, but she LOVES the vet! Regular notices when I forget vaccinations that are needed, great medication pickup options, and short wait times. Love Dr. Feinn! Doctor knowingly put my cat in danger. DO NOT go to this place. Like other reviews I've read on Yelp, for example, the receptionist is incredibly rude and unhelpful to patrons and her coworkers alike. I had the audacity to question the very steep price of my cat's asthma medicine which pissed off the office and whomever the older white male doctor is who seems like a Trump supporter with how petty he was. My questioning was so egregious that they fired me as a patient without any warning and now with only a couple days of medication left refused to provide me a prescription. After trying to reason with this doctor practically begging for a couple days worth until I can get a new vet to give me a prescription and given that it is the middle of the work week and I don't have a car this is very difficult. I am hoping my cat can make it... This office is weird, how can you be a veterinarian and not value the life of an animal. Seriously unbelievable. Read Less

When I moved to Oakland three years ago, I spent a while evaluating yelp reviews for various vets before choosing Claremont. Thus far, I haven't regretted it. There are several vets and as is the case in any clinic setting, some doctors are better than others. That said, the vets at Claremont are basically oscillating between 4-5 stars. If you have a preferred vet, you're able to make appointments with them exclusively. But, it's really nice to also have the option to see anyone if the need arises. Dr. Leggieri is probably the best veterinarian I have ever been to. She knows what she's talking about and will admit when she's uncertain about something. She managed to negate a prior vet's diagnosis within the first five minutes of meeting my cat, which was a godsend since he can now be treated correctly. She has an unusual ability to connect with and calm animals, in a way I wish more veterinarians possessed. When interacting with the animals, she's almost like a kindergarten teacher, energy wise. If she were to leave Claremont, I would want to transfer to her new clinic. Dr. Frizell is also fantastic. He seems like Dumbledore, knowledge wise. I had adopted a sweet dog from OAS and brought her in for her first check-up, discussing how she had shown some major aggression towards people other than myself. While meeting with us, he asked why I wanted a dog. After telling me that she was highly aggressive and owner possessive, he suggested that I return her. "You want a dog you can walk down the street and take to the park, not a dog that tries to attack everyone who comes near you." My family owns/operates a large animal rescue and sanctuary, so I had always been of the belief that it was awful to return an animal without trying your hardest. However, after a lot of thought, I realized he was absolutely right and that was why I was so offended. I didn't have the time or energy to devote to rehabilitating a seriously aggressive dog. I will always be grateful he told it to me as he saw it, versus seeing us and saying nothing. He chose the harder route, one that most vets wouldn't take. The office/reception staff are hilarious and really kind. They're incredibly helpful and attentive. Rakhel gives me Hershey's kisses regularly, particularly post-election, and always give my dog plenty of biscuits. She and Jenny are fun to watch/listen to while you're waiting. The only times I've seen any of the staff be firm or curt with any client was well deserved - don't double park, don't be upset if there's not an appointment available when you drop-in, don't expect instant "service" when there are other people waiting. I brought my dog here on recommendation for medicine to help manage his separation anxiety because he was OCD about escaping my yard daily. The vet told me he just needed training, looked at his ears and eyes, gave me two pamphlets, and charged me $57 for an office visit. This was after I wait at least half an hour beyond my scheduled appointment. The front office lady was very rude as well. Later that day my dog escape from the yard while I was away and ended up being dropped off in the San Jose animal shelter over an hour away by a "helpful" person who found him. I ended up having to rehome my dog last week because of this. Thanks! It's super helpful to give someone a solution for an urgent and immediate problem that will take months to work. I will not be bringing any of my pets back, so I hope you enjoy that $57 payment. Read Less

It's taken me 7 years to write this review, but I really feel the need to share. Our puppy was supposed to be spayed here - instead she almost died. What should have been a routine safe procedure, turned into a near death experience where our dog had to spend nearly a week at PETS emergency hospital and was given 2% chance to live. I'm happy to say our dog recovered, but sadly suffered permanent vision loss. On top of it all, CVH still charged us for the full spay even though they never completed the procedure. CVH claimed it was because the dog had a bad reaction to anesthesia, which they cannot predict. I'm fairly certain it was due to error and lack of attention on their side. I also can now say this with confidence as we've now had the same pet successfully spayed else where with NO issues with anesthesia. Bottom line: Spays/neuters are cheap here for a reason. They do not take the precautions (pic line, close observation, etc) of other vet hospitals. If you are considering a spay/neuter, please consider else where or ask very specific questions about the steps involved and procedures at CVH and at least compare to other pet hospitals before you have it done here. Initial impression of reception staff was not positive, as they were curt and dismissive of gentleman in front of me and then of me. It was as though there WERE such a thing as a stupid question... when it comes to basic customer service you just cannot treat people that way. Nonetheless, I still gave this place three more strikes:- first, they neglected to send health records to pet boarding establishment as I'd asked. - second, in going through round of three sets of vaccinations at 2, 3, and 4 months, they apparently had not given Bordatella vaccination, nor let us (30-something working professionals who are likely to use pet boarding) know that we may want to consider it to prevent kennel cough. He ended up contracting kennel cough, after which they treated us like bad parents for not knowing he should have had the vaccine prior to boarding. Since having the boarding establishment ask us to get the vaccination, Claremont Vet has gone back and forth telling us at one time he did have it, then telling us he hadn't. General confusion. - third, the staff simply did not reply to my email asking them to send records to health insurance company, and I had to follow up twice only to have them tell me, "Oh yeah - we sent those" (great well you should have confirmed with me). Claremont veterinary hospital have a great staff. I brought my brother's dog who was sick with several things. He ended up needing surgery and I appreciated how the doctor created a treatment plan that was affordable and effective to get the dog back healthy. I've boarded the dog for two weeks while on vacation and I felt like he was treated more like a part of their family instead of a temporary visitor. They also offer grooming services for pets with skin conditions. So instead buying the expensive shampoos,  you can save some money by having them bath him. For me this was a major score! Read Less

I can't speak to the experiences of the other reviewers.  All I can speak to is my experience here.  I saw Dr. Fein.  She was kind, understanding and attentive.  I previously went to another vet who said both my cats need dental cleanings.  I was told this would cost between $800-900 for each cat (including possible teeth extractions).  I went to Claremont for a second opinion.  She said she looks at each animal like it's her own pet and said if they were her cats she wouldn't do dentals now.  It's nice that she judges each decision on what she would do if she were in my shoes, rather than how they can make maximum $.  It seems like their prices are lower for typical procedures than others and they don't do unnecessary work just to make extra $.  I fully trust and recommend them. It is with much regret that after 12 years of using CVH veterinary services, according to the receptionist, I have been black-listed from their services. I tried to bring my wheaten terrier in a couple of months ago for a refill on his ear drops. The receptionist rudely brushed me off, spouted off a lot of statements that didn€t sound true, and was very confrontational when I asked for an explanation. After that terrible experience, I spoke with the vet on the phone and felt satisfied with our conversation. I took the time to give her some constructive feed back from a long time customer, on how her receptionist could make healthy improvements in customer service. A couple of days ago, I called to schedule an appointment, once again found the same woman to be very combative, extremely rude, cut me off several times in mid-conversation, accused me of yelling at her (I was speaking on my car phone and was barely able to speak). She continued to not listen to anything I had to say and cut me off every time I tried to say something. She told me I had been placed on the no-service list. During my prior conversation with the vet, she stated that she hoped to see me again and my business. I must assume that the receptionist is not telling me the truth, the vet changed her mind without communicating that to me, there is a miscommunication within their team, or I€m actually blacklisted. Either way, I€ve booked my wheaten terrier somewhere else and I definitely won€t return to CVH. Sadly, I€ve enjoyed a long history here. CVH even put my yorkie to sleep. Yelp reviews show a disproportionate number of complaints with the lousy customer service from their receptionist. It€s sad but reassuring that it€s not just me. The front office receptionist is giving the same rude and inappropriate treatment to many of their other loyal customers. Hopefully they will be able to fix this customer service problem before they lose more faithful clients. Read Less

And they just hung up on me after holding for about 10 minutes.  I called about 10 minutes to noon, knowing they close for lunch at noon, thinking that was enough time to make an annual check up appointment for the dog.  After holding for 10 minutes, rather than coming on to take a message or even say to call back, they just hung up, promptly at noon.  These people take their lunch hour very seriously. We started going to Claremont about six years ago, when we moved into the area and a puppy joined our household.  Initially, we were pleased with the service and the vets we met, and having a vet just blocks away was a real plus.  The puppy check-up went well.  The neuter surgery went well.   And then I took the puppy in some months later because he seemed to be wheezing.  Now, I'd met Dr. Frizzell before.  The first time I talked with him, counter to the opinion of another vet at the practice, he told me not to neuter my dog until some distant time period in the future (with the undertone of any-idiot-would-know-this).  Then on a visit not a month later,  he told me I should neuter my dog now (again with that any-idiot-would-know-this tone).  When I took the puppy in because he was wheezing, which I thought was due to allergies, Dr. Frizzell made it clear he thought I let the puppy run through foxtails and ergo I was a complete idiot.  I assured him the dog had never been near foxtails.  My father was a veterinarian, so I'm reasonably well educated about animal well-care.  The negative interactions seemed to spread to other vets in the practice over time.  The dog nearly died in reaction to a vaccine in his second or third year, and they were going to do the same set of vaccines the following year.  I suggested they read their chart and that we take the preventative measures previously outlined.  After being a client for six years, I brought in our cat for treatment, rather than my husband.  The vet who'd been my dog's primary vet for six years looked across the exam table, introduced herself and asked if this was our first visit. My dog really only goes for annual check-ups and vaccines now that he's older.  I was on the fence about taking him back to Claremont, but going back rather than look for a new vet was the easy solution. Today I thank them for reminding me the only thing I was an idiot about was continuing to go back to patronize a practice that leaves me dissatisfied.  I'll use this time, while they are closed for lunch, to shop for a new vet instead.  Enjoy your lunch! I like these people a lot. Dr. Frizell spoke to me at length via phone about a GI issue that was complicated but not urgent. I kept thinking to myself, "How can anyone make a living when he spends so much time on a no-cost phone consult/follow-up?" At another time, an ER vet in Berkeley encouraged me to "follow up with my vet" to have my dog's teeth cleaned maybe even 2X per year--after she couldn't diagnose the issue that sent us to the ER--but Dr. Frizell nixed it. He was polite about the recommendation but pointed out the risk, expense, and very dubious benefit. He is experienced, caring and completely knowledgeable. Dr. Feinn performed a very successful surgery in removing a large wart (about 1.5") on top of two toes on my 10-year old dog's foot that had been growing for several years. It was a tricky surgery because she had to open the area, remove-and-scrape inside to prevent re-growth from the virus, then sew the area up with very little skin in the area. She suggested that since my dog had to have general anesthesia, she should also clean her teeth (first time).  In the doing, she noticed a loose tooth and removed it - preventing future infection and pain. The cost of the cleaning/tooth removal was only a fraction of what these procedures normally cost (due largely because of the expensive general anesthesia that has to be administered.)  Dr. Feinn is an artful surgeon with a warm, caring "vet-side manner!"   I thank her.  My dog thanks her! Absolutely awful experience. We only brought our cat here twice before switching to another clinic. They were running 20-30 mins late both times without communication about lateness. Meanwhile you sit in a waiting room listening to the front desk staff cackle and chat loudly/inanely/incessantly. The misdiagnosis of our cat's condition (hyperthyroidism, which he does not have) via his blood test very nearly cost him his life last week. Our new doctor read the same blood test very differently and was able to order more tests that eventually had us take him to emergency a week after we went to Claremont. Claremont told us to retest in a month. If we'd followed that advice our cat would certainly be dead -- not resting on the carpet. I don't think his physical exams were thorough enough either. We were lucky to find wonderful, competent care elsewhere. I do not recommend this clinic and will never be back. Read Less

I have been a client of Claremont Vet Hospital since 2001 when I got a Giant Schnauzer puppy. Dr. Feinn quickly became our vet of choice there, showing diagnostic skill that pulled this great dog through a number of close scrapes. My Schnauzer, Luna, twice developed a cancer of the toenail bed, a menace to all large dogs with black coats, regardless of breed. Both times Dr. Feinn got us through the very difficult cure: removal of the whole toe. After that Luna loved Dr. Feinn in spite of the toe business. Then there was the spleen cancer at the 10th birthday that Dr. Feinn piloted us through, taking out the spleen at the last minute before a possible bleeding out and death. Really, Luna was a strong, vigorous dog and a great beauty nearly all of her days, but she did fall ill a few times. When Luna, at age 13, developed a big old growth in her belly that was killing her by degrees, Dr. Feinn came to our house and eased the noble dear out of her misery. Dr. Feinn is always kind, efficient, works with you on budget and explains everything. She is rather an expert on giant breed dogs and has owned, loved and lost giant breed dogs herself.I think she has a great heart. She has taken very good care of our family. Read Less

When the vet finally saw me, it was near closing time, but this was not my fault.  She took one look in my cat's mouth and said "That's a malignancy."  My shock was evident and I started to cry.  She briskly explained the very grim prognosis to me, with no expression of sympathy.  I was crying when I paid my bill and left, and the woman at the desk also completely ignored my emotional state.  The vet was Dr. Naomi Feinn. If anyone should understand the importance of pets in a person's life, it's a vet.  If they tell you your pet is going to die a horrible death, they should do so with kindness and sympathy.  If they don't, they should get some training. I can only assume this vet is only in it for the money. That was a very upsetting experience & I never went back to that vet, or tried to, until today.  I'm helping a neighbor with a litter of very young, rescued kittens.  I know that many vets will offer a discounted rate to check a litter.  Someone recommended this place so I thought I'd give them another chance.I called this AM, explained the situation and asked what the charge would be.  The receptionist told me they usually charge $54.00 per kitten; no discount rate for the whole litter.  Sometimes, she said, the vet might make an exception if it's a rescue or if I've been a patient there before.  I said I had & she said the vet would call me back.Several hours later I got a message from Naomi Feinn: "Hi this is Dr. Feinn returning your call."  She did not answer my question, didn't even say which clinic she was calling from, or leave a return phone number.  In business this is unprofessional phone etiquette, but more importantly, I again had the impression of a lack of caring on her part.By the time she returned my call I had already found another, very nice vet who had checked the entire litter for $54.00--75% less than the rate I was quoted by Claremont Vet Hospital! The vet  I went to instead was East Bay Veterinary Clinic on Grand Ave.  Dr. Amandeep Sandhu was kind, patient and thorough.  The rescued kittens are already benefiting from her care. I took my dog to Dr. Feinn at the Claremont Vet Hospital when he developed a large abscess under his right ear.  She worked with us over a period of months after the she drained the abscess and while we tried different antibiotics.  Eventually, he had to have surgery to correct a problem that was related to surgery he had while he was in the animal shelter from which he was rescued.  During the whole time I was very impressed with Dr. Feinn's professionalism, her style of communication with me, and her gentleness and care with regards to my dog.  During this whole process, I met many other dog owners who told me how much they trusted their dogs to her care.  I shall be returning to her in the future for my dog's health check-ups.. There are many reasons my husband and I are pleased with Claremont Veterinary Hospital, and we recommend it highly. We followed our Dr. here from the far west suburbs because of her amazing diagnostic, medication, and surgery skills. And, we were quite happy to find the entire experience at CVH to be excellent. We very affectionately call our vet, Dr. Tamara Borland, "Dr. House" because of her amazing diagnostic skills, and she has saved our pets over the years from very unusual, subtle, and life-threatening health issues. She couples her insightful big-picture medical ability with a deep knowledge of disease processes, and catches even elusive problems before they become entrenched and pronounced. Her explanations and coaching really help to guide our choices toward best-result options at the most reasonable cost and highest quality of life. She's equally skilled at providing needed surgery and medication support. Our dogs adore her, and we rest easy knowing that she is watching out for them.It was simple to find the hospital from our highway exit on College Avenue and we had no trouble with parking at our mid-morning weekday appointment (three off-street spots and the entire area lined with reasonably priced meters for cash or credit card). The reception desk maintains a calm, efficient pace and the waiting area is deep and roomy, with a brick-faced wall on one side to add warmth. Everywhere there is very pleasant and functional decor that we found to be quietly elegant. All of the floors are a beautiful marble-chip mosaic, and the entire building is clean and smells fresh and inviting. The staff were very, very sweet with our dogs, without over-hyping them up (no crazy ticker-tape parade, thank goodness - just lots of soothing, bright and happy tones). Though our pups can normally be very shy they were relaxed here and quickly started wagging their tails as they met everyone. One pup is a pedigreed purebred that needs monitoring for the usual genetic maladies, the other is a rescued mix breed with significant developmental issues. Dr. Borland easily handles both ends of their health spectrum. And, in fact, her new office is so nice and serene that our dogs, normally skittish about new places/people/animals that they must wait in the car until an exam room is open (and the hospital was glad to oblige) were fine. We were surprised to find our dogs unusually easy to handle for the short time we were in the waiting area, and both were quite happy to explore around in their exam room.I am so very glad we took the time to come and see for ourselves what a terrific new place our dogs have for such great veterinary care. when it was time to put my 17-year-old dog down two years ago, i took him to claremont vet. dr. feinn told me to put him up on the table and brusquely injected him with a heart-stopping drug. he cried, upon which she told me it 'stung.' this month, i had to put another 17-year-old dog down late at night, so i took her to the emergency pet hospital on 10th and university in berkeley. they gave her a relaxant first and then the fatal injection, just as had been done at creature comfort for another dog i had to put down five years ago. they said they always do that. it was then i realized that the last moments of bungie's life were unnecessarily painful, which makes me as the one responsible for taking care of him, feel awful. dr. feinn could have given me a choice. i would have paid extra. after bungie died, claremont vet called me four times asking me if i was SURE i didn't want his ashes. i told them definitively that i didn't. their calls bothered me every time.on april 3, i wrote claremont vet complaining about their procedure and suggesting that they not submit future dog owners to it. today is april 20, and there has been no reply, though i know from my experience being harassed about the ashes that they could have picked up the phone any time.if i ever get another dog, i wouldn't take it anywhere near dr. feinn or, unless they change, claremont vet hospital.

When the time comes that my dog starts getting expensive, I feel confident that I won't be used as an ATM machine; I will trust his advice and judgment with confidence. Read Less

Hidden fees!We took our dog in for TPLO surgery and were quoted $2500 then they had raised it to $3500. After the procedure was completed , we were required to make follow up appointments that weren't communicated prior to surgery and ended up charging us extra. I gave the Doctor my feedback and all he said was ok. An apology or some sort of effort they will improve in communication would have been a nice gesture. Read Less

Read Less

I've had two bad experiences with this place, and I don't recommend it.  In both cases the problem was lack of compassion on the part of the vet and the staff. The first time was a few years ago when I took my cat in because he had a problem with his mouth.  I  was on time for my appt. and waited patiently a very long time to be seen.
