I can't say enough about Dr. Dorsey, owner and director of Oakland Veterinary Hospital. I have been to many veterinarians in my life and Dr. Dorsey's compassionate, bedside-manner and humanity is by far above and beyond any others. Such dedication and heart and so committed to her life's work. Thank you. Your humanity if far reaching - you take such care of the humans in difficult situations regarding the animal. I'm so appreciative. Read Less

I never take the time to write these but figured in this case I should warn others. I came to this office as a second opinion from a ear hematoma surgery that failed. When I entered the office it seemed promising, the lady at the front desk was very kind and made us feel welcome. Once we got into the exam room, the atmosphere immediately changed. Dr. Dorsey (I believe is her name) coldly greets us and goes right into rudely asking where all his paperwork is and questions our reason for being there in the most unprofessional way- "Are you here for a procedure thats already been done by another vet?" She examines my dog and isnt very sympathetic to the fact that my dog has recently been to the vet 6 times in the past month for problems with his ear and is terrified. She suggests injecting his ear with cortisone and takes him in back. A few minutes later she comes back to inform me that "Your dog is a BABY and cant handle the needle. Id need to sedate him and honestly dont think its worth it". I wish I could have recorded this whole interaction as her tone and demeanor were anything but professional. I gave this office 1 star because of the wonderful soul at the front desk. Read Less

I have two cats that I brought to oakland vet hospital for check ups and as someone else said you have to schedule two separate appointments. I did and saw both vets. The first vet was so rough and brutal with my female cat that she threw up all over the carrier and car as soon as I started to drive away. (This has never happened with other vets.) My male cat was not eating. The second vet examined him and prescribed some old drug with serious side effects that I never gave him (waste of money). She found nothing wrong with him. Two weeks later I got a second opinion with another vet office. That vet immediately found (felt) a large tumor wrapped around his intestine. It was a very agressive cancer and he died three weeks later. He may have had a chance if I brought him to a competent vet in the first place. This office is a flashback from the 1950s-- no email. The vets think they are God and clearly they are not! They don't want to give you the actual test results or prescriptions so you can buy the drugs at a cheaper pharmacy. If you ask questions of the vet, they get very irritated with you. Avoid this place like the plague if you care about your animals. Read Less

The Vets at this practice are careful, thoughtful, and thorough. However, the office staff is irregular, and many seem reluctant to do their jobs. They could easily make life easier for pet owners, but instead do things like asking you to come in and pick up or drop off your files and prescriptions instead of mailing or faxing lab results to a specialty vet or pharmacy, or allowing you to wait while they fill a prescription. Your time is worth nothing---their time is gold. One office worker seems to take special pleasure in making life more difficult than it needs to be. Why the vets put up with people who clearly are no help to their practice is beyond me. If you want two small "maintenance" items done under one round of anesthesia, for example, they just say "no". As it happened, another vet who was seeing our pet for a specialty treatment had no trouble with this request---so I know it wasn't me being unreasonable. Read Less

Dr. Dorsey is a seasoned and highly competent Vet with many years of experience and a love of animals.  She was able to diagnose my cat's problem and tirelessly treated him on her own time during a holiday weekend.  She prescribed the proper treatment and the costs were relatively reasonable in comparison with other clinics. She saved his life and he's now more lively and happy than he's been in a couple of years.  I've been bringing by cats to the Oakland Veterinary Hospital for years and trust them completely.  At times I've had to take the cats elsewhere because they were closed and I always return to them for their expertise and experience.  Dr. Hart the other Vet. at the clinic diagnosed my younger cat correctly just by feeling his back as we couldn't figure if he were injured and if so what had happened.  The clinic is a small cozy , unpretentious neighborhood one but, in my opinion is "top notch".                                     Sandy M.
