Negligence of staff during our dog's last stay devastates me. I was not called to be notified of any change in behavior or eating while she was there for a week. They had seen her for several years, so were familiar with her and it is reasonable to expect they would notice/observe change. When I picked her up she had nearly stopped eating altogether. A few days later I took her to the emergency vet and they found cancer in her liver and spleen. A week later was the end of her life. I had been meaning to find a new vet/boarding situation. Of course, they didn't cause her illness. They failed us nonetheless. I would sue, however, it's not worth the agony. Read Less

I have been going to VCA Oakland for years and years, with multiple pets and have been very happy with these providers. I had had two very poor medical experiences at VCA Albany and am so glad I switched. Every doctor who has treated my animals at VCA Oakland has been very kind, thorough, and professional. They don't push unnecessary tests or treatments. The doctors are timely. The front staff is generally very helpful and organized. The only problem is that after your animal is seen it can take a very long time (sometimes 45 minutes or more) to get checked out as the front desk is waiting for orders/instructions/medicines from the medical staff. Not sure why this part of the visit is so inefficient. Expect expert, compassionate care but perhaps a long wait for your bill and medicines at the end! Read Less

Ok. Vets are great, informative, and listen to your concerns or questions. Very friendly staff. Do NOT go here if you have a tight schedule (every appointment runs 2 hours, I've literally sat in the waiting room for 30 minutes after the appointment because we weren't able to pay until they did paperwork, every time.) That would be OK, except that they apparently have a policy of not authorizing Rx requests from online pharmacy stores (1800PETMEDS). This is apparently written down somewhere, however not one person felt mentioning that when we brought in our dog for fleas. We are fighting fleas, and they are forcing us to either buy their off brand meds (ComboGuard, which funny enough is a generic AND TWICE AS EXPENSIVE as the name brand meds online) which we don't want because it isn't the medication we are trying to get filled.
Their reason for not authorizing faxed in Rx? They can't verify where the meds come from... I'm sorry, but it's just not OK with me that you are obviously steering us towards your pharmacy. All you do by forcing us to mail in the physical Rx is delay treatment and make our lives harder AND more expensive. I get why they say their meds are cheaper: you'd have to overnight anything you needed that week if you don't want to buy from them.
ADD TO THAT: Their records aren't company wide. I tried to stop by the closer VCA at the very beginning and was told we'd be treated like new patients and they would need a day or two to transfer records.
So to close, the VCA is like a franchise for animal treatment. No one location is connected to another past the name and basic policies. Sorry VCA, but you lost our pets today, and I won't be recommending you. Read Less

I've been taking my pets here for 14 years. The staff are friendly, and it's always easy to see a doctor because they have more than one doctor working at the same time. Sometimes you can get a same-day appointment. But also, if you don't have an appointment, you can still see a doctor as a walk-in.
They always have one doctor working who handles walk-ins. You might have to wait a little longer as a walk-in, but I rarely have had to wait extremely long times as a walk-in. Also, they are open longer hours than other vet offices during the week, and they're also open on Saturday and Sunday, which is really convenient for me.
Before I started going to VCA Oakland, I had two vet offices that I used. I remember how hard it was with those other vets to get a same-day appointment, plus they often closed early, and weren't open on weekends. With animals, you can't always predict when they need to see a vet. Being able to see a vet ASAP is very important to me, and that's the main reason I go to VCA. In addition, the vets here that I've seen are really good.
This might sound like a walking advertisement, but I really appreciate that I have a place to take my pet that has realistic hours that accommodate my work schedule. Dr. Bynum is a great doctor and she is so respectful of my pets and us as clients. You can tell she really loves animals and knows her stuff.
